I just keep on wishing that the money made you stay.

Jiraiya's pen flicks easily along the notepad; most authors opt for computers these days, and he supposes he should get with the times. But his old method of writing by hand on whatever scrap of paper he could find got him this far: sitting in a mansion with no spared expense and every amenity a man could dream of. Hell, it all started in a bar with an idea written on a cocktail napkin as he watched the bartender serve her regulars and newcomers through a peaceful reverie. It was the look in her eyes, so clearly not present unlike the rest of her working body, that flooded through the dam of his writer's block that sent him through a flurry of those little square napkins.

It's cold, though. Even with all the money his bank account could ask for, he finds turning the furnace on pointless; there's nobody to keep warm, and he's been numb to it for quite some time now. Perhaps he should relocate to the mansion down in Mexico soon— tis the season.

You always hated that mansion.

"Don't you love the view, babe?"

"Yeah…" Your eyes shifted from his as you lied.

He should burn it to ash.

Jiraiya's latest novel is for a new series, and while he initially only intended a one-off, he's quickly coming up with idea after idea to turn it into the most dramatic story he's ever thought of. It may just rival any soap opera by the time he's done— and wouldn't that be something, if he could have a book turned into a show or a movie? He's already got more money than he knows what to do with; it'd just be wasteful at this point.

But maybe a few more zeros on his bank balance can convince you he's worth it?

Jiraiya sets aside the pen and makes a call whilst surveying the empty room, reserving his usual VIP room at a club downtown, preemptively adding a few extra bottle girls to his tab before the line clicks and he's off to dress himself. His closet is massive, the size of the three bedrooms he had the walls of removed just to accommodate this collection of suits, accessories and the like, most of which he's never worn.

“Jiraiya, those rooms were supposed to be for our kids, not some ridiculous closet!”

“Relax! I can buy another house, baby, don't worry.”

Even in his own home, he's got appearances to upkeep.

Though he has worn every single tacky Hawaiian shirt he owns, of which he has an entire corridor of this closet dedicated to. The club he's booked tonight has a dress code specifically against those, however (and specifically put in place because of Jiraiya) so tonight he's opting for a black suit with gold accents and leaves the shirt behind as he buttons the jacket about halfway. He's not sure who started this movement of showing up half dressed, but he'd love to get on his hands and knees and give them all of his gratitude.

Jiraiya walks by the empty, unlit portion of the closet, refusing to think about the day he’d finally unscrewed and tossed out the lightbulbs shining light on his darkest days.

The club is loud, packed and boozy when Jiraiya arrives. He's enough of a regular to be vaguely anticipated even without his reservation, and as such there's more than a conga line’s worth of women waiting for him. The symphony of “Hiiii Jiraiya~!” is intoxicating, along with the cheers when he announces the drinks are on him tonight. He's got a card on tab at all times here; he doesn't even remember what it looks like, but it's probably a black card.

“Babe, you gotta start spending more on your card. The penalties are kicking my ass!”

“Then cancel the card.” Your voice is dead, along with your feelings for this relationship. You can't remember the last time you spent time with Jiraiya rather than a product of his wealth.

Jiraiya goes through the throngs of pretty ladies itching to be his sole beneficiary, kissing them all with an obscene amount of tongue before he's even gotten to his private party room. The bottle girls are ready, serving what he's buying to every patron in the club. The atmosphere is rowdy and everyone's having fun, swapping drinks, pills and saliva. What else are Saturday nights good for?

“Can't we stay in for once? I'm not up for partying.”

“Well, what the hell else are we gonna do?”

In the center of the room, Jiraiya sits alone in the plush armchair, staring through the sexy bodies before him and rather at the wall. When you've done this once, you've done it a thousand times. He hasn't found joy in any of this in many years now.

He hasn't felt anything.

All this stunting couldn't satisfy my soul.

Jiraiya’s back in the mask the moment gentle fingertips touch his jaw, and when he looks up he could swear he's seeing you. But then one blink and the truth is before him: you're not here, and never will be. As the image of the stripper before him settles, he plasters on a smile and allows her to pour the liquor right into his mouth.

By closing time, he's got thousands on his tab and can hardly stand on his own. He's more than capable of holding his liquor, but frankly he's had much more than he should've. Truthfully, he's surprised he's got a liver at all anymore. Jiraiya stumbles out of the club, that big body crashing into a light pole as he fumbles for his cell phone, the device being the latest edition Apple has to offer, though the old man can hardly figure any of it out. It crashes to the concrete, shattering the screen that brightly displays a picture of you looking so bright and smiley and happy.

He stole the photo from your Instagram page when you posted it on a day many moons after you left him. And he made sure to crop out the man beside you that's wearing your wedding ring on his finger.

Jiraiya hits the ground hard when he bends over to pick up the phone, and with the cold air chilling the sidewalk he finds himself more willing to stay there than try to find a way back home in his inebriated state.

Got a hundred big places but I'm still alone.

The bright light of the broken screen blinds him, but he still manages to dial your number through nearly-closed eyes. The ringer drones on and on, and just when he thinks he's going to voicemail, the line picks up.

“Jiraiya.” It's said with a sigh, softly. There's no irritation this time, and instead he's met with nothing but pure sadness. “You can't keep calling me.”

“What if I penned a new medical drama, hm? Those’re popular…”

“Why don't you do what fulfills you, like your first novel?” Before he'd waded into the world of smut and taken on those rabid readers, he'd written a thrilling book that sold poorly, but has a rather dedicated cult following after all these years. It was a truly brilliant read, and even now serves as a reminder of the man you originally fell in love with.

“Those books don't sell. The money didn't make you stay… So it's gotta be worth the trade, no?” He's far too late in the game to make it right; after your ex-fiancée has her fifth wedding anniversary, there usually isn't any salvation in pulling your head out of your ass.

Sparks Fly - Part 1

Summary:  After working as an engineer for Wilford & Gilliam Trust for several years you find evidence of seedy dealings and burned books. After turning in the evidence you find yourself in danger and seek help. You're taken into the protection of a mob family where you run into your high school best friend, Mace.

Mace was enjoying his time at the bar. It wasn't often he and all the other guys got to go out together. Well, all except Curtis. Him and Teach were still in their Exciting New Relationship phase. He couldn't fault them, especially since he was able to prod Curtis on how he'd been right all those weeks ago.

He was enjoying watching Hal trying to teach Jake some pickup artist stuff when he got a text: Prep the guest suite. Mace put his phone away and paid his tab before letting the guys know what was happening.

The Guest Suite was the name given to one of the nicer apartments the family kept as safe houses. Mace was generally in charge of their upkeep, seeing as how he was handy with just about everything they needed. Furnaces, fuses, water heaters, even plumbing, he was really good at fixing and maintaining the apartments. It’s why he was officially in charge of the maintenance for the low-income housing that the Family funded. 

Several apartments were kept empty for specific reasons. The only one Mace didn’t touch was the Basement Studio, where Barnes and Fowler did their more intense interrogations. Curtis took responsibility for that one and Mace was happy to let him. Most of the others were Singles, kept open for victims of abuse or runaways in need of a safe space. There were a couple of Lofts for when Family members needed to lay low for a while. But the Guest Suite was something special, reserved solely for potential witnesses that the police were unable to keep safe. Its upkeep was focused on making it feel warm and welcoming and catered to witnesses, making them feel more inclined to testify, if only because they felt safe to do so. 

Part of prepping the Guest Suite was stocking the place with food. It was an off hour but Mace managed to gather up enough to last someone a couple of days, making a note to pick up more at a better time. He got to the apartment and set to work making the place ready. He stored the food, got the heater going and kept an ear out for any off noises while he did the rest of his work. He made sure the bed was made and even checked that the dishes and cooking supplies didn’t have a layer of dust.

While he was checking things he got another text, We’re here. Mace kept working and listened for the door to open. He made sure to keep himself where the guest would be able to see him immediately. It wouldn’t do to startle the guest. He was just double checking the security bars on the windows when he heard the door opening.

“Now this is where you’ll be staying,” he hears Huffman say. “Mace here has got the whole place secured and full of food. And if you need anything else, we can get it for you.”

“Mace?”

He turns around and sees you. It takes his brain a second to recognize you, “DC?”

You run up to Mace and hug him, “AC! God it’s been so long!”

“What kind of trouble are you in that brought you here, DC?”

“Umm…well..” you stutter.

“She’s got dirt on Wilford & Gilliam,” Huffman interrupts. “You two know each other?”

Mace looks at Huffman, “we went to high school together. We were really good friends, bonding over a shared interest in engineering.”

You giggle, “we were such nerds we even nicknamed each other after the AC and DC electrical currents. I was DC, Direct Current, because I had my life all planned out and was a straight shooter.”

Mace smiles shyly, rubbing his hand on the back of his head, “and I was AC, Alternating Current, because my plans were all over the place and my interests kept varying from month to month.” He turns to you, “you’re in trouble with Willford & Gilliam?”

“I…I was working for them and found some…irregularities in the finances. And the blueprints. And a few other things.” You start shaking at the memories of the past week and Mace pulls you in for a hug to steady you.

“They sent goons to kill her,” Huffman continued. “They’ve managed to find her at three different safe houses under my department's jurisdiction. I’m pretty sure I’ve got a mole or something. Barnes approved getting her set up here.”

Mace nods, “who do you have set for guard duty?”

Huffman gives Mace a once-over, “I’m thinking it should be you.” 

“Woah,” Mace argues, “I’m not guard duty material. I’m just maintenance and information!”

“Mace,” you whimper, “please? I’d really like to be protected by a friend, not a stranger.”

He looks into your eyes and sees how tired and stressed out you are. He knows you’d be safer with someone else but he can tell you need something familiar and safe or you’re going to be a nervous wreck.

“Okay,” he concedes. He turns to Huffman, “I’m still gonna want some back up or something.” Huffman nods in agreement. “And someone’s going to have to tell Curtis I’ve been commandeered for a little while.”

“I’ll make sure he agrees to the plan.”

“So you’re gonna talk to Teach?”

“Well, I do value my life, Mace.” Huffman heads out, leaving you and Mace alone together.

Guillermo del Toro owns a second home that only has his stuff in it. Though the 59-year-old filmmaker is married with children, he keeps an entire second house to himself and fills it with frightening sculptures, inspiring pieces of art, toys, books, and movies, all of it his own curation. There are no kid’s drawings on the fridge, no side tables picked out by his spouse. It’s his personal playroom. He does most of the upkeep himself after a housecleaner broke the finger off one of his statues. He refers to it as a “man cave” or the “Bleak House” and often spends time alone writing there. Del Toro claims his wife likes it and has always supported his childhood dream house. She also prefers that his horrifying decorations don’t impede the aesthetic taste of the home they share as a family.

Having an entire home as a creative man cave that I am entirely in charge of would sound perfect to me if it weren’t for the fact that owning one home has become a nightmare even the best horror director could not fully capture on film.

I know I am lucky. The stats on Millennials owning their own homes are (if you will) bleak. But whatever I thought was irritating me in the city wasn’t nearly as bad as the physical and mental work required to live in a house. It drains bank accounts and my will to do more than one thing per day. When I was young and lived in New York, I scheduled my days like a CEO or politician: meetings, lunches, podcasts, and stand-up shows all crammed together to the minute as if I could teleport between venues. Now, if Wednesday morning includes a Home Depot run and a painting project, realistically, I’m not doing anything after that until Saturday. The laundry list of what needs to be fixed or maintained in the house grows every day. In the winter, there are rooms I simply don’t use because of a draft I can’t fix. In the summers, the yard becomes something we have to actively fight against lest new trees and mushrooms and 6-foot tall weeds that resemble stalks of asparagus take over everything. The current issue is a dead tree blocking a path to the backyard because wisteria vines are pulling it to the ground. It’s the fastest I’ve ever seen a plant move outside of Evil Dead.

Though we struggle to keep up with our checklists, my wife and I have ambitions for the house outside of general maintenance. We’d like a bigger kitchen, a functional garden, and a fence that looks like a stiff breeze wouldn’t knock it over. The house is fine without these physical flourishes, but the fantasy is always there, nagging whispers in the brain of how nice it could be given unlimited time and resources. That nagging gets into my head about a whole house devoted to my creative dreams.

When I fantasize about what I’d like most if money and time were no object, I find myself thinking about a home theater. Unfortunately, money is an object, and the “fun budget” was consumed by the “necessities budget” a year ago. We already replaced the furnace and AC, dug up tiles in the den, painted nearly every room, replaced doors, one of which was rotting the wood at the edges because it hadn’t been replaced since 1986, the year I was born. Still, the list grows. A dedicated line to the kitchen needs to be added by an electrician so the fuse doesn’t blow whenever I use the toaster and the electric kettle at the same time. The fence and what it nominally protects behind the house needs to be reworked before bunnies consume everything that isn’t a weed. The ancient carpeting needs to be ripped up, bathrooms need to be redone by professionals so my body can actually fit comfortably inside one. Walls need to come down to make living spaces seem less like hallways, and the bay window on the second floor that appears to be melting toward the ground needs to be addressed by a professional architect before the wind rips it off the bedroom wall like a giant scab. After all of that is finished, I’d still need to move into a newer, much bigger house if I want to have a home theater. 

Where did the yearning for a private theater come from? Unlike Del Toro’s childhood fantasy of having a house all his own, my wish for this extravagance came much later. I was 30, and I remember exactly how the seed was planted: Zillow. I spent hours on the site, letting the mortgage/insurance calculator tell me what I could afford for the same amount I paid in rent in Brooklyn. On my phone’s screen, I saw a $400,000 mansion in my wife’s hometown outside of Pittsburgh that was the most beautiful house I’d ever seen. It had high wood ceilings and multiple fireplaces to make the whole giant house feel like a cabin. I had 8 bedrooms and a home theater. Imagine, I thought, how good a movie must be in a theater in your own home. Imagine the parties with friends. Imagine movie nights where you force your kids to watch Back to the Future for the first time in a close approximation to the space where you saw it. Playing an old cartoon and a few YouTube’d trailers from the 80s. A little popcorn machine in the corner. Speakers that are way too loud. The dream.

I’ve realized recently, however, how silly the longing for a home theater is for me specifically. I don’t like watching sports at home. I need the atmosphere of screaming people either in the arena itself or in a bar. I need the game to be live. I need to be out among strangers or friends. I feel the same way about movies. I need other people with me, laughing, crying, gasping, clapping.

Yield to the Sea

Summary: As Catius is out gathering stuff for the others in making their cave a home and to make sure they have supplies for emergencies he gets a distress call.

Catius was swimming, glad to be out of the cave that had been where he and Ramiel had been recovering in. He loves his brothers, but sometimes they had been almost smothering in their concern and worry for him.

He understands why though, be able to show such concern, and be able to help and fuss after him and each other was something they weren't able to back when they were back Then. He is going over the list of items that they need to gather, what is most to least urgent to gather.

Since they are on Ancient Terra and none of them have a forge or the training to do so, doing more than basic upkeep on their armor isn't possible. Perhaps if they found a wandering Salamander, either as an individual or as a shoal of them they might be able to ask for trade for fixing their armor for services or good or something.

Or- Jophiel or one of the others could talk to Erriox to see if he knew what they would have to do to get some of the Warp Smiths to help fix up their armor, if it was possible to do so with the highly limited supplies that they have on Ancient Terra.

But none of them were very happy or comfortable with the idea of asking some of Erriox's Chaos Traitor Brothers for help. Especially with something as critical as armor, it just sounded like some of the dumbest and stupidest idea to even contemplate. He is shaken from his thoughts when his vox crackles to life and he hears someone call out.

"-elp," He hears, and tries to call out on his vox device- which only does static, and he curses out loud his fucking useless broken vox. "-lease -elp."

He desprately tries to send a location ping- to send a text-vox message that sends a location ping request. All hat his helmet sends back is an error message- he had been unable to send messages out. But, unfortunately, he can recieve message. Which seems unkind and almost worse thank a fully broken communication device.

"-ounded," The voice calls out- they sound ragged, wounded, hurt. Throne Curse him this sound bad. He tries to search for the person, knowing that it's likely in vain, who knows how distant the voice is- the vox communication devices can send and recieve over vast distances. And Ancient Terra is vast in it's scope, for all that it's a single planet.

By the time he finds the person, he's been callout out loudly using all three of his lungs, bellowing at the top of his voice, trying to find and call out to the person who's in his bust vox who's begging for help. Their voice growing weaker, and weaker, more desperate and sad.

He finds the person, and his hearts drop to his stomach. He recognizes that familiar blue and gold armor. This person is a fellow Ultramarine- and from the make of his armor. He's a fellow Primaris Marine. He swims as fast as possible to his brother's side and he curses loudly, as tears sting his eyes and makes it harder to see.

This brother was too still, if his hearts, both of his hearts flatlined, his Belisarian Furnace should have activated to give him one final jolt of energy to survive. That it happened spoke to several bad things having to have happened. Or it had, but Catius had been too slow to retrieve him.

This brother- from the wounds on his scales and armor- had been a member of the unfortunate company that had been lost in the warp and abandoned by Captain Sicarius. He uses what he knows of First Aid to assess the condition of his brother.

He hangs his head. Dead, he'd not made it in time. This pooor brother died again and thought he died alone- calling out for help and that no one had heard him call out for help. He allows himself to sob, wail and curse himself out for not being fast enough before smacks his cheeks and gently grabs his dead brother's body.

Catius is going to take his body to their cave. Ramiel needs to do Last Rights- and… and… Cedric needs to do Apothecary things to help his brother pass on as well. They should… they should be able to say goodby to Atlas one last time.

His hands shake and he carries the dead weight and grimly sings the funerary durges that he'd been taught by his first born brothers in the Ultramarines. The first of his fellow Primaris Marines that heard him was Claude- who'd shadow teleported to his side once he registered what it was he was singing- worry on his face, and sadness when he spots Atlas's dead bady.

"Let me help you carry him Cedric and Ramiel." Claude says softly.

Catius nods, blinking back tears. Hopefully they would be able to s-s-salvage things from Atlas, who hadn't been dead for more than an hour or so. Jophiel is the next to find them- scenting blood in the water faster than any of them could, due to his Blood Angel Lineage.

He called out to Cedric and Ramiel- who'd swum over swift as they could- and Catius told them what had happened- how he'd heard a distress call, but hadn't been able to respond on vox- and how he'd yelled as loudly as he could, desperate to try to find whoever had called for aid.

But Catius had been too late and he hadn't found Atlas in time, his voice his hoarsh, and barely a whisper, he'd nearly destroyed it trying to find someone who's already lost to him. Again. He apologizes for not being fast enough.

Cedric and Ramiel's shoulders shake, but their hands are steady as they gently take Brother Atlas from Claude and Catius, and swim off to tend to his dead body as Apothecaries and Chaplains do. Catius is glad, even in a dark sense that he'd found some intact and had independently powersourced and properly sealed properly clean jarred devices that could be used to contain certain organs.

Jophiel and Claude have wrapped their arms around Catius and he notices a keening, wailing sound, that he only just realizes comes from him as he sobs, and sobs. A few hours later, Jophiel raises his head first and Cedric and Ramiel are back. The jars are filled with the precious organs that Atlas had been able to gift them.

"You were able to get to him in time for us to save… save Progenoid, Immortis, Blecher's, Sangiun Primus Portum, Sinew Coils, Magnifcat," Cedric said, "unfortunately his Belisarian Furance was too damaged to be useful for another."

"That is good, that you were able to retrieve so much," Catius says, his voice hoarsh and shaking with emotions.

"We shall say our goodbyes and send him off into the seas to his final rest," Ramiel says quietly.

Ramiel carefully speaks the words of the ceremony, praying to the God Emperor that he'd be forgiven for overstepping his role as a Judicar. He wasn't high enough ranked to do this ceremony, technically. But he had the training for it, and he had to do is duties, for his brothers and cousins, for this living and the dead.

Daily Life in the Phyrexian Spheres (Maze to Bays)

The Maze is a thick tangle of coppered greenery and savage beasts shielding loyalist Phyrexia from the outskirts of the plane, posing a significant challenge to attackers moving in or rebels moving out. In theory, the domain ruled by Vorinclex and Glissa is loyal to Elesh Norn and stands ready to serve the Orthodoxy. In practice, most Maze denizens don't discriminate between Mirran or Phyrexian, loyalist or rebel. All are prey unless they can prove their worthiness to survive, and many an Orthodoxy enforcer realizes too late that their authority provides no shield from the dangers of the wild.

Though the Maze's savage reputation is well-earned, areas of tranquility remain, shielded by dense growth. Bubbling ichor wellsprings, nexuses of mana, and meadows of rare and exotic flowers await those with the skill to find them. Pockets of relative civilization also exist, such as the living quarters of priests, aspirants, and commoners, woven or grown into the landscape's coppery scaffolding. Common roles include the upkeep of local plant life and the study and augmentation of predators, carried out by Phyrexians known as stewards.

Not all Maze residents subscribe to Vorinclex and Glissa's ideology of weeding out the weak, though, and many form communities and care for those close to them. They are reluctant to aid outsiders, usually more out of self-preservation than an idea of social Darwinism (though many justify it with the latter). Luckily, no one is enforcing their obedience or ideologies--all Maze-dwellers must do is survive. Though predators run rampant, actual policing and enforcer presence is almost nonexistent here, making the Maze a suitable location for canny rebels to hide. In particular, the border between the Maze and the Furnace is a hotspot for illegal activity--another region that praetors consider beneath their notice.

The Bays are the heart of Phyrexia's surveillance state. Every feature of the landscape, from buildings to "trees" and the great skylights themselves, is studded with ever-watching eyestalks. The cameras' ubiquity reminds residents of their duty to obey--after all, you've got nothing to fear if you've got nothing to hide. Mind magic is heavily used, and memory redaction is common. The infrastructure of the sphere itself is also carefully micromanaged, down to local climate patterns. Control centers are overseen by ranking officials but staffed by commoners, who desperately beat back the unseemly Tangle growth that reaches down here.

Religion takes a backseat here in favor of hard science, and some researchers brazenly deny the Orthodoxy and claim experimentation as Phyrexia's truest way ahead. After all, the Progress Engine's primary export is research, and its titanic labs demand a steady influx of talent, raw materials, and captive test subjects (both Mirran and Phyrexian). Compleat creatures that fall short of their duties are often "repurposed" this way. Vast amounts of information are stored in archives of glistening oil and quicksilver.

Even in this sphere of eyes, however, dissidents carve out bubbles of secrecy. Drones and cameras can be covertly hacked, and mental defenses are meticulously constructed to mislead. Spy networks infiltrate nearly every level of Gitaxian academia, pilfering research and weaponry to aid the rebellion's cause.

A quirk of Surgical Bay life, which bleeds over into the other spheres, is the tendency of tools and inanimate devices to be replaced by living Phyrexian creatures known as skites. From syringes to chests and telescopes, even the most mundane items skitter on their own accord, and railings for them to walk on are built into most rooms. These simple creatures are roughly equivalent to trained animals, and variants are employed by both loyalists and rebels to spy on their opposition.
