I named it 🍄Mushroom Mountain🍄 becaause, as you might have noticed, it's jampacked with fungi inspired details. In the "cups" there's melted and crackled glass (which is why this one is not for food). Also, I did miss to put glass in one of the cups! Can you spot the one who is not like the others? 😅

Mushroom Supreme

A few months back I posted about some slices of a dead elm that I was using for round paintings. The elm had extremely dense growth rings, slightly over a hundred in a piece only 13.5 inches /34 cm across. We have two substantial sections of log from that tree, and my son decided to do a chainsaw carving of a mushroom for K, who is an extreme mushroom lover.

When she unwrapped it this morning, we were all so impressed. I think he only finished it up yesterday, so I hadn't even seen it, yet. The dense grain in this wood looks absolutely amazing in a carving.

This thing weighs nearly 50 pounds /22.7 kg. He used the chainsaw to start out, then transitioned to chisels, a grinder, and a rasp to get it smoother and smoother. He plans to do a bit more sanding, then they will apply an oil finish together when the weather is warmer. It's pretty darned great just as-is, though.
