My mom is amazing. I asked her if she wanted some of my fungi pizza and she was like "no thank you I don't like mushrooms". And then I was like but you often made food from scratch with mushrooms for me and you also ate it? And she told me it was because she wanted me to be able to develop my own taste for healthy foods
Let's give it up for moms, everyone!

YEAH!!! That's what I'm talking about!! Go Moms! Woo! 🎉🙌

ok so this is so specific and im sorry but would you maybe consider doing a stimboard themed around something like 龙梅梅Longmeimei, the channel on youtube? it's basically food and nature scenes and it's so pretty, i just think it'd be a really cool board!
totally alright if not, had to try though!

World building idea I just had while watching a mushroom documentary
Planet with insectoids aliens AND Fungi (the kind that turns insects into zombies/overwrite their behavior) aliens.
They both live more or less peaceful together. Aeons ago they made a peace treaty that the mykonids are allowed to inhabit dying/dead Insectoids. So the death of the one is the birth of the other
I bet they would have a very fascinating culture around death and birth and afterlife. Maybe even a form of "forbidden" love where the myconid "infects" (or travels from is first inhabit corpse to this new body) so they can live together forever. A bond unbreakable by force.
And the possible cults that could grow around the politics and believes of it all
Gods I want to be an extraterrestial xenologist so bad Dx
All the world-building possibilities!!!

what's the most recent mushroom fact you learnt??
THANK YOU FOR ASKING THIS !!
carnivorous fungi : fungi that derive some or most of their nutrients from consuming microscopic or minute animals.
most of these species trap & stun nematode worms (pictured below), making them nematophagous organisms.
Tumblr media
other carnivorous fungi may attack amoebae or collembola (pictured below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
fungi trap & eat these tiny animals in two main ways :
constricting rings (also called active traps)
adhesive structures (also called passive traps)
some fungi have a profound ability to "sense" when a nematode worm is near before activating their "traps". scientists are unsure how they evolved this ability without proper brains.
in total, there are about 150 species of fungi that attack, kill & digest animals.
a good example is pleurotus ostreatus (pictured below), which uses a calcium-dependent toxin to paralyse its prey (nematode worms) within minutes, & leads to necrosis of the miniscule animal. it acts as quite a protein-rich food source !!

another fun fact : i used to farm these at home :-)

hello hello!!
learned about this fun thing called mycorrhizal fungi (myco=fungus), rhizal=root) which is complicated words used to describe the symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi that grow on their roots. the fungi are called mycorrhiza and the long and short of it is that they attach to plants roots (plants roots can only grow so large, that's their root zone or rhizosphere big words are fun) and eventually they use up the nutrients in the soil in said root zone and some nutrients (namely phosphorus which is important for the plants to copy DNA and make nucleic acids that would tell other stuff how to make proteins etc for the plant to grow and stuff) don't move so the phosphorus in the rhizosphere cant be replenished once its used up. that's where the mycorrhiza come in. they effectively extend the area the roots are able to draw nutrients from and in return the plant produces glucose (through photosynthesis) that the mycorrhiza use as food because they cant really produce their own
tldr: cool fungus lives on plant roots, it makes sure the plant gets everything it needs, the plant allows the fungus to eat the food it makes
this train of thought led me to grian as mother spore
which led me to hunger au grian
and working out a symbiotic relationship with him and other people
which led me to the idea of him being a hireable like. hype man..
like,,, need help asking someone you like out on a date? he'll heighten your confidence so you can go do the thing and he gets lunch in the process! /silly
-🍁
p.s. will gladly take blame for use of the word apricity :]
SKHWJDNEKDJKDBKWHDKEJDK REALLY FUNNY IMAGE, HELP... he's got one of those ads on facebook that pop up during the holidays for ppl who need to piss off their families /j /j
OKAY ACTUALLY FUN FACT but ive actually compared the Listeners to mycorrhizae before!!! In my head they are very fungal in nature, and thats the best way ive been able to describe the symbiotic relationship they have with the Players they fuse to. Honestly i love fungi and mycology in general, its such a deeply fascinating subject to pour a bunch of time into, and im glad you seem to be enjoying learning more about it!!! :DDD

I've seen like 1 other person use swamp fever for their infection au which is a shame bc it had a whole episode dedicated to the fact Zecora and Fluttershy were gonna DIE from it unless Fluttershy found a cure
Swamp Fever has such insanely good horror potential it’s a shame more people don’t utilize it

hiyaaa! it's fungi anon back after a few months! i entirely missed pride month :( but not disability pride month!!! so happy disability pride month!!!!! if it isn't too much, can you please rank your favourite traditional woodland creatures (think badger, fox, rabbit etc)? please have this little patchwork heatmat i made the other day! it is made of triangles!!!!
ohhh hello fungi anon!!! it's so good to hear from you buddy <3 that's okay, i missed a lot of pride month too, but yay disability pride month!!
okay hell yes i can. i started this and immediately realized i can't do like, "here's my least fav and here's my most fav," so they're all just getting a ranking on a scale of 1-10. (and i know you meant small creatures maybe but some big ones get included) i will probably forget some of them, and these are Very Canadian, but here goes:
bunny rabbits - 9/10. My favourite little guys. Every time I see one in the city it's like the most magical thing.
foxes - 12/10. Right now I am kind of obsessed with them. Scrungly little guys who can look so elegant or SO sad. Extra points for how rare they are to see.
moose - 6/10. So I have to go up north a bit to see them, but it's SO neat when you see one. Lower points for being dangerous as hell lol.
bears - 100000/10. HAVE I MENTIONED I LOVE BEARS. Also super dangerous and I don't actually want to see one up close but I adore them, they are perfect and can do many things wrong but I forgive them anyway.
squirrels - 4/10. Hilarious bastards. Get into everything. Listen when I was a kid I wanted to be a squirrel, I love them so much, but also they're kind of the worst and one time I had one run up my leg trying to get to the poutine I was eating so really I am justified in the ranking they get
coyotes - 10/10. Look I know they have a bad rep but I adore them. They're so neat!! Highly recommend people giving coyote nature books a read, they're a fascinating species. (I've only read most of Coyote America and it was v good, with big warnings that like, animal death is a big part of it)
badgers - 7/10. Round. Very shape. Honestly I know almost nothing about them, but they get extra points because the videos of badgers and coyotes being friends and hunting together is my favourite thing.
deer - 7/10. Seeing deer is always kind of magical as a city kid. However, I know they're also kind of pests, so, they get a lower rating.
turkeys - 3/10. Listen. I love turkeys. They're hilarious. However. They are LOUD and also did you know they nest in the very top of trees?? It is very disconcerting to walk through the woods and hear turkey gobbles coming from like 20 feet above you
That's all I can remember without googling XD
Thank you for the lovely ask friend!!! And thank you for the beautiful heatmat, it's so cool!!! I love patchwork stuff :D
For you I have a lot of fresh dill, because I have an abundance of it in my garden right now. And if you don't like dill, then I have a banana choc chip muffin for you instead <3
Have a lovely evening friend <3

In what way does fungal sex show or prove anything about human sex? Also sex isn’t even the same concept as gender. Literally nothing about gender identity requires we play pretend like sexual dimorphism isn’t real at all in humans. None of it requires lying about intersex people (differences of sexual development) as though they = “3rd” sexes or sexes outside male and female (all people with intersex conditions are still male or female — no 3rd gamete, no 3rd/other sex + true hermaphroditism in humans doesn’t exist). Yet lying about all this is increasingly popular. WHY

This was asked on Christmas and I promised myself I'd wait at least a month before responding. It's now a been about two months, so there's my response.
