im about to go to antarctica (for real, this is not a bit) and was wondering if u have any tips or recommended readings? Like a book about explorers you'd recommend to someone who hasn't read about any of them

first of all have fun in antarctica! i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t jealous (if you get any pictures i’d love to see them!)

in terms of book recommendations, i’ll first point you in the direction of these posts by @jesslovesboats which are really comprehensive and have a bunch of great books on them!

for my personal recommendations, i would say endurance by alfred lansing, which was the first book about antarctic exploration i read, and the worst journey in the world by apsley cherry-garrard, which is a classic. madhouse at the end of the earth is also really great but the belgica expedition isn’t as well known as some of the others so i’m hesitant to recommend it as a starting point. i haven’t read any books on roald amundsen yet, but he was a fascinating guy and kind of the mvp of the whole era, so he’s also a great starting point.

I’m sorry for spamming you, but I keep noticing more and more lyrics, and Best Friends’s line of “It’s time to love somebody who won’t try to change your way” is really, really interesting in light of how many songs they have along the lines of how they’ll never change (and speaking of which, the earliest I have found so far is Independence Day, from self-titled B-sides, with the line “You’re telling me the same old story / And that I need to change.” They were told this really young)

I defended Armie Hammer against the calculated misinformation circulating on social media during the smear campaign perpetrated by his ex-wife, which culminated in his vindication in the press with the Airmail article by James Kirchick and the in-depth analysis of the scandal by HouseInhabit, with the help of research and evidence by House of Receipts. Period. End of story.

I don’t think he’s a saint by any stretch of the imagination, and should he happen to choose to do something stupid, I certainly wouldn’t defend that behavior.

While people can’t always be relied upon for consistency in their values and behavior, the truth is immutable. The truth is what I’m truly interested in defending. That’s it. That’s all.

Because I can’t find any actual facts amid the ambiguous complaints in this new goat rodeo to fully understand the situation accurately enough to comment, I’m mystified by your assertion, Anon, that I’m defending him (against what, I wouldn’t even know.)
