im about to go to antarctica (for real, this is not a bit) and was wondering if u have any tips or recommended readings? Like a book about explorers you'd recommend to someone who hasn't read about any of them

first of all have fun in antarctica! i’d be lying if i said i wasn’t jealous (if you get any pictures i’d love to see them!)

in terms of book recommendations, i’ll first point you in the direction of these posts by @jesslovesboats which are really comprehensive and have a bunch of great books on them!

for my personal recommendations, i would say endurance by alfred lansing, which was the first book about antarctic exploration i read, and the worst journey in the world by apsley cherry-garrard, which is a classic. madhouse at the end of the earth is also really great but the belgica expedition isn’t as well known as some of the others so i’m hesitant to recommend it as a starting point. i haven’t read any books on roald amundsen yet, but he was a fascinating guy and kind of the mvp of the whole era, so he’s also a great starting point.

I’m sorry for spamming you, but I keep noticing more and more lyrics, and Best Friends’s line of “It’s time to love somebody who won’t try to change your way” is really, really interesting in light of how many songs they have along the lines of how they’ll never change (and speaking of which, the earliest I have found so far is Independence Day, from self-titled B-sides, with the line “You’re telling me the same old story / And that I need to change.” They were told this really young)

I'm pretty sure we go back to rejects and independence day with the whole never change thing, i did look it up not long ago oksaoksoaks and i actually LOVE that the song that says that it's okay, i love the way you are is the friendship song. Because it is recurrent, every album has at least one song referring to not being able to change, independence day, rejects, broken pieces, better man, want you back, easier, complete mess, eftys, flatline, emotions. you two are out running errands, and he can tell you're getting progressively more exhausted as the day goes by. when you guys get done with the last errand he leaves the car, shouting behind him. "hold on, ill just be a sec!!"

you cant quite see where he ran off to but he comes back around 5 minutes later with a box. you open it to discover it's full of your favorite pastries!!
