i literally forgot about my weird arc where i started reporting for al jazeera's fledgling foray into a russian al jazeera branch.
i 100% only did it because i still am bitter that my accent was too strong to be accepted in any russian university for journalism-- my ~childhood dream~ was being a news anchor. but then they were trying to get me to report like.... wild propaganda stories to terrify muslims in moscow and they couldn't even verify any of the stories they were telling me to report... so i was being phased out because i kept being like "you can find someone else to say that on camera" to almost every story. then ukraine happened and russia yeeted al jazeera out of the nation so that was that. i actually am pretty sure that they never paid me for the last month of work lmfao.
anyway just remembered it bc ~big shock~, news that six of al jazeera's reporters are known for involvement in terrorism, to the point that literally one of them was fucking involved in holding noa argamani hostage.
#Very Interesting breed of journalism that they have going on and Very Interesting to watch how non-muslims approach it#full offense it's on the same level as RT

...So about the ORNJ_JNPR T-shirt thing...
daggerpawstudios asked
“Okay I am the only confused by all the hate that Oscar is getting right now because they dropped some new merch at the RT Store. I am not sure if you heard that Team JNPR got called Team ORNJ on the new shirt. I feel like this is kind of a mistake on the marketing team's part and not really CRWBY. But now a lot of people are attacking RG shippers and Oscar fans and I don't really understand because it seems more like fragile egos”
Squiggles Answers:
@daggerpawstudios
Hey there Dagger. Well to be honest with you fam, this squiggle meister has sort of been out of the RWBY loop for the past few months. Got a work project so I haven’t been as active as I normally would be in my squiggle shire here on Tumblr.
Nevertheless, I did sort of know about the shirt thing. I first heard the news from a tweet from RWBY Youtuber Calxiyn it over on Twitter. I then saw RWBY Youtuber ThatKaitoDan mention Oscar replacing Jaune as leader of Team JNPR in his own tweet post as well but I didn’t know the full context of what he meant by that until you brought this to my attention.
I didn’t know that RT had actually listed the shirt as Team ORNJ which in their case is…well…a big OOF on their part. Personally, I don’t think this is something that folks in the FNDM should be making a big hullabaloo about. I think it’s an obvious PR mistake on the marketing department who run the RT store releases since no offense to RT and whoever is in charge of promotion on their online store but…their record of “getting things right” their store especially with the FNDM hasn’t exactly been squeaky clean in the past.
Besides, another obvious giveaway to me as to why I think it’s more likely to be a minor error is the very fact that Jaune’s silhouette is still first in line.
Think about it. If Oscar had really usurped Jaune as leader of the team then why isn’t his silhouette first in the line up?
Isn’t it not a golden rule of thumb that the leaders of each huntsmen team always appear first in the team line-up whenever they do the silhouette thing as we’ve seen previously with teams like RWBY and even the Ace Ops?
Anyone with decent vision can clearly see that that’s Jaune’s silhouette at the front of the line. Not Oscar. If Oscar was truly the new leader of the team then why is he the third silhouette?
If thing had really turned ORNJ, then the order should be Oscar, Ren, Nora and finally Jaune. But as you can clearly see, the order is Jaune, Ren, Oscar and Nora.----THE SAME ORDER THAT WAS FEATURED IN THE VOLUME 7 OPENING! Or did folks…y’know…forget that?
I know V7 ended earlier in the year but have folks forgotten the season already with its opening sequence? After Team RWBY, we got the JNPR 2.0 gang and the order in which JNR and Oscar appear matches the T-shirt with Jaune being first, then Ren, then Oscar and finally Nora. So there you go.
So I wouldn't worry too much about that Dagger. I agree with you in thinking that it was a simple error made by the RT store. However, that being said, the other part about people stirring discourse over this and worst yet attacking the Pinehead and Rosegarden community over this…do I even need to say how silly that sounds.
Much like with the ridiculous discourse that arose after the small Rosegarden moment in V7CH9, this is yet another classic example of certain-certain folks literally scraping the bottom of the barrel and using any excuse they could find to harp on something they don't like while unfairly accosting the people who do.
I feel really bad for my fellow Pineheads, Rosegardeners and Rosegardening Pineheads who were victims of this time of foolishness. Because that's what this all sounds like to my ears. Foolish fools acting foolish yet again.
Seriously, what does Oscar as a character or even Rosegarden as a ship have to do with something that was posted by the RT store and is clearly an error made by the people who run it?
Are certain-certain folks truly that desperate to stir up drama and conflict that they would honestly seep so low as to use a T-shirt design as fuel for an easy argument?
The Pinehead, Rosegarden and Rosegardening Pinehead communities get enough flak as it is but this is just...beyond silly!
I'm not implying that the hate brigade should train their anger on RT but how silly can you be to take something as a T-shirt design to that level of seriousness? Especially when the design more or less outs its own error. Am I missing something here? Is there another unknown part to this where the CRWBY Writers came out and confirmed that this is legit? Because otherwise, this is just…so…LIKE SERIOUSLY DUDE?!
I like RWBY a lot and in spite of my own personal gripes and nit-picks with the direction of the show at times in terms of its writing and treatment of the characters and their respective relationships and arcs---in spite of all that, I still actively enjoy the show and I’m still invested in seeing where the CRWBY Writers take it to the very end. However I’d be lying if all the constant discourse from the more “toxic” side of FNDM isn’t slowly starting to chip away at my excitement for the series. I can live with RWBY having flaws but what I don’t need are folks constantly going out of their way to use any excuse they could to express their own personal gripes with show; going as far as to abuse others in the process. That kind of stuff isn’t cool and it’s not good to witness through the eyes of someone who wants to enjoy the show or is at least trying to...y’know what I mean?
When I first heard the news of the JNPR shirts, I was excited. Not only is this the first merch we’ve gotten of JNPR in some time but it’s also the second merch to feature Oscar.
In case folks don’t realize, Oscar doesn’t have a lot of his own merchandise sold by RT which sucks for us Pineheads.
At least the OG JNPR/JNR have a couple of merchandise (albeit not as popular or abundant as Team RWBY’s but still there).
But Oscar…not so much and the same can be said for Ozpin too. It took RT six whole seasons to release ONE T-SHIRT DESIGN with Oscar and Oz on the front and even that was sort of short-lived since I don’t see that shirt advertising in the store anymore. It’s always the same ole Team RWBY stuff.
So with that in mind, this shirt was a first and a given. It’s so great to see Oscar together with JNR on a shirt because in a way, it makes it more official that he is a member of their group especially for those of us who were rooting for this to happen since V5.
I still don’t think it means that he is the leader because as I’ll say again, look at the order on the shirt design. Oscar is third. Right where Pyrhha used to be. How can he be leader and be third in the line-up? Oscar is meant to replace Pyrhha, not Jaune.
In the case of this whole ORNJ JNPR T-shirt scandal, I don’t understand how on Earth a clear marketing typo could reach as far as to spark discourse for a fictional character of a series, his fans and the fans of one of his ships? AGAIN!
What does Team JNPR (or whatever they will be called) being miswritten as Team ORNJ has to do with us Pineheads, Rosegardeners and Rosegardening Pineheads? How are we as a fan community responsible for an error made by RT?
Even if there are Pineheads who think this should be official--NOT speaking for myself here but I have seen other Pineheads express their desire to see Oscar lead JNPR for their own reasons---still, this is no excuse to harp on someone for liking it just because you don’t.
You’re right Dagger; this doesn’t make sense to me either.
All I can say is that it is what is it. Another example of certain-certain folks using any excuse to harp on something they don’t like while trying to drag others down with them and/or ruin their good vibes.
Seriously these types of folks are honestly scraping at the bottom of the barrel. I’m surprised they’re still able to see after sinking so low with their foolishness. If that sounds a bit too harsh then sorry; not sorry.
Ever since the whole discourse over the minor Rosegarden moment for V7CH9, I have lost all patience with these types of fans. I honestly find them to be as dumb as their behaviour and it exhausts me just hearing about them and their nonsense.
Losing their marbles and attacking my people over a bloody T-shirt error that ain’t got nothing to do with us.
SO...DAMN...SILLY!
I hope RT clears this up at some point. And even if they don’t, I really don’t see why people should believe this means anything. I certainly don’t.
Not like I want that to happen either. In my opinion, I was never in favour of ORNJ---at least, not right now when Oscar is still a teenager growing into his duties and responsibilities as a huntsman. To me, I only like the idea of Team ORNJ from the perspective of Jaune retiring/stepping down from his role as leader of a huntsman team; instead choosing to pass the torch onto Oscar after the former farm boy had matured into a fine huntsman under his team’s guidance and after proving himself in the eyes of his teammates, especially Jaune.
Y’know that kind of idea.
This is why I always referred to JNR and Oscar as JNPR 2.0. I want JNR to become Oscar’s team and surrogate brothers and sister in arms. I want Oscar and Jaune to have a close big brother-little brother type of dynamic where Oscar admires Jaune’s strength and leadership and looks up to him alot as both a close confidant (much like Ruby) and teammate while Jaune himself admires Oscar’s tenacity after everything he’s been through while making it his role to look out for him along with Nora and Ren.
This doesn’t mean I want Oscar to replace Jaune as team leader nor do I think he should.
I’ve heard some folks rationalize that Oscar should lead JNR since he is Ozpin’s successor. Nothing against the folks who like this concept but if I were to add my $2.50 to this, I don’t think Oscar being Oz’s successor should automatically qualify him to take over JNR; y’know what I mean?
Jaune earned his place as leader of JNPR after proving his talent for leadership back in V1.
The only time that Jaune took a step back was when Ruby led the group as RNJR between V4 and V5 since at the time, the trio were aiding Ruby with her objective to get to Mistral, as Ren said. But even then, Jaune was still a leader and backed up Ruby’s calls with his own strategies.
Not to mention that folks seem to be forgetting that Ozpin was the one who chose Jaune to lead JNPR.
Though we never got a scene of Jaune confronting Oz on his decision to make him team leader like we did with Ruby Rose in “The Badge and the Burden” episode (I think that was the title. Correct me if I’m wrong), much like Ruby, Oz picked Jaune and was of sound mind when he did. Oz picked Jaune to lead since despite his past hiccups and shortcomings, he saw that Jaune also had the makings of a great leader as shown during JNPR’s first fight against the Deathstalker.
So the whole notion of Oscar getting to be leader of JNR JUST BECAUSE he’s Oz’s successor EVEN THOUGH it was Oz’s decision to choose Jaune to be leader of JNPR in the first place---yeah that doesn’t sit right with me.
Jaune is meant to be a leader and JNPR is his team to lead; even with Oscar joining it. Sorry ORNJ-fans. But that’s where I stand on that.
Anyways, that’s all I have to say on this subject. I hope I answered you Dagger.

RWBY Recaps: “Pomp and Circumstance”
Welcome back, welcome back. I managed to miss last week’s title/summary leak, which for any other show would have been a blessing. With RWBY though I find myself not minding---even hoping for---spoilers, just so I won’t be quite so blindsided by things when I actually watch them. It’s a topsy-turvy world.
We’ll get to that in a bit though. For now, we open on the new Amity Arena immediately flying over the Schnee dust mine. I’m talking the group has barely made it back out into the sun before Ironwood’s men are arriving and setting up base. That’s some real eagerness to get the ball rolling. Funny how Ironwood’s entire plan is doomed to failure and eight of the people helping him to complete it haven’t mentioned that yet...
We get a shot of the Ace Ops triumphantly emerging with Qrow and RWBYJNR positively geeking out over how fantastic their take-down of the geist was. It was admittedly a great battle. The best scene I think we’ve had in a while. Sadly, that charm didn’t carry over into this episode.
As the gang gushes over how fantastic they were Clover explains that it all comes down to the makeup of their team. They were specifically chosen to compliment one another and make up for any liabilities they might bring. Forethought like this brings back the age-old question of whether Ozpin’s own teams are as random as they appear. Does he really leave it to chance, who you first run into and what relic you happen to pick? Or was he subtly pulling the strings in order to ensure that complimentary teammates ended up together? Even if they don’t realize they’re complimentary at first. Ruby and Weiss are a perfect example of that.
It’s a question we may never have answered. Especially as the Ozpin hate just keeps piling on and on. Before that though we’re given a ton of humor. Nora, continuing her role as comic relief, slides up to Elm and asks if she needs a new best friend. Their team name could be
I’d watch it.
More pressingly though, talk of team compositions and pairing up leads to a comment from Harriet that we need to unpack. Bear with me for a moment though because there’s something else I want to tackle first. It’ll connect back in a moment. Basically, I want to address my frustration last recap that Oscar was left behind with no explanation and the assertion by others that this was a ‘show don’t tell’ moment. It wasn’t. Providing your audience with no reasoning behind a decision is not the same thing as providing a visual explanation as opposed to a verbal one. On some level the choice to leave Oscar behind functions like an argument and I see this a lot in paper writing:
Student: This ad is really sexist
Me: And...? Why?
Student: I mean it’s obvious? All the women are wearing skimpy clothes and that one guy calls her a ‘bitch.’
Me: Perhaps obvious to you, but we can’t rely on the reader picking up on the same details and interpreting them in the same way. So you need to include that as evidence. In addition, you need to consider potential counter claims. What if I said some women choose to wear skimpy clothing because they feel empowered by it and that my friends often call me a ‘bitch’ as a silly endearment? How do we undermine those arguments in the context of your ad so you can more solidly prove that it’s still sexist?
Student: Hmm
vs.
Yang: We didn’t bring Oscar with us
Me: And...? Why?
Yang: I mean it’s obvious? He’s not ready for this fight yet.
Me: Perhaps obvious to you, but you can’t just bank on the viewer coming to that same conclusion. You also need to consider potential counter arguments. What if I pointed out that Oscar fought just as well as you during the premiere battle and that there’s now a history of you excluding him from every event you possibly can? How do you then undermine those points to prove that a) he really isn’t ready yet and b) that you actually left him behind because of his skill and not because you’re all still pissed at Ozpin?
Yang: Hmm
That was not a ‘show don’t tell’ moment. That was no tell combined with no show. A ‘show don’t tell’ would have been Yang going, “I don’t feel so bad now that we left Oscar behind” and then cutting to Oscar training with Ironwood, showing us that he needs to improve his skills as opposed to Yang just telling us, ‘He’s not ready yet.’ But we got neither.
I bring this up a full episode later because here, in “Pomp and Circumstance” we’re given another shining example of precisely how bad RT’s ‘show don’t tell’ skills are. The Ace Ops. What are we shown? A group that is incredibly close with one another. They’re capable of anticipating each other’s moves and are able to follow directions with little to no prompting. They’re constantly joking, teasing, goofing off in a way that implies real intimacy. Clover proclaims, “What would you do without me?” demonstrating a familiarity that allows him to exude both confidence and playfulness. They’re close enough that he needn’t maintain the persona of their boss; close enough that he can play the part of their hero without anyone taking offense. In short, they act precisely like Team RWBYJNR.
Now, what are we told by Harriet?
“We’re not friends... that’s the job. We don’t confuse the two.”
Excuse me?
There has been nothing---NOTHING---in the last two episodes to imply that this team functions solely as a work group. Based on what we’ve been shown the idea that they’re not friends is laughable. What the audience sees and what the audience is told by a character do not match up. Kind of like how we’re told throughout the entirety of Volume Six that the group is heroic when we’re shown them repeating the actions of the villains. Kind of like how Qrow tells us that Ruby is different from Ozpin even as we’re shown her making the exact same choices. Here, we’re told that the Ace Ops aren’t friends yet shown that they clearly are and this disconnect functions solely as a means of---again---highlighting how special RWBYJNR supposedly is. Because we get a long shot of how devastated that mindset makes them
and then Ruby immediately rejecting the idea that you need to maintain a purely professional relationship in order to be a good team, begging the girls to go out sightseeing with her. Later Weiss proclaims to her father that they’re not merely friends, they’re family. As nice as the sentiment is, this is just another example of how RT is trying to paint RWBYJNR, RWBY in particular, as intrinsically better than all the other fighters around them. The takeaway is that the Ace Ops might be powerful, but without friendship they’ll never be as strong as our heroes... except the Ace Ops are clearly friends. Harriet’s cold and judgmental tone---You consider yourself friends with them?---makes no sense here. This would be an entirely different situation if we were actually shown an Ace Ops team that acted indifferent towards one another and if, later on, that professionalism and lack of knowledge about each other’s temperament, skills, etc. led to a problem. Ruby comes in with a, “See? I never would have made that mistake with my team because I’ve gotten to know them both on and off the battlefield. Being friends is an asset.” But we don’t get that, so all we’re left with is a message of, ‘RWBYJNR is super special even though they’re doing nothing different from the Atlas specialists. But trust us, they’re intrinsically better.’
That message got old, oh, two volumes ago.
In addition, can we please talk about the messy pacing? The group doesn’t want to go sightseeing with Ruby because they’re exhausted. Weiss and Yang act like their traveling and near death experiences happened last night, and later Qrow’s “the finally getting to Atlas part” comment reads as recent too, but as I mentioned in the previous recap, Pietro’s comment tells us that at least a few days have passed. Realistically a few weeks. So which is it? Has enough time passed to justify Pietro creating seven distinct upgrades and apologizing for having their weapons “so long”? Or has so little time passed to justify the group talking about their trip like they still haven’t had the chance to sleep after Penny’s tour? Yes, this stuff actually matters when you’ve got a laundry list of internal conflicts and the audience wants to know how much time the group has had to grapple with them. Has it only been a few days since the Ozpin drama, or a few weeks? Did Yang and Blake murder a guy the other day or last month? We’re simply not told.
While consistency unravels Ironwood tells Clover that he needs the Ace Ops “on the ground” being “subtle” in their investigations... so maybe don’t bring Marrow. This moment, right down to the humor, is pretty identical to Blake deciding to leave Yang behind when she went to dismantle the CTV tower. Because “Stealth’s not really your... um...” Thing. If only the writing acknowledged these failings in a non-comedy context and encouraged the characters to learn from their mistakes. Marrow might have to listen to his boss and Yang will do anything Blake asks of her, but the rest of the time? ‘You’re really bad at missions that require subtly’ is just going to piss the group off. Even though it’s true.
As the Ace Ops take off Ironwood calls over the team leaders. Which is a bit of a weird choice considering he’s not asking Jaune and Ruby to keep secrets from their teams or anything. They’re literally just going to turn around and relay that info immediately to YWBNR. So why not just tell them all at once? Chalk it up to not wanting to animate nine characters. Basically though we learn at least part of Tyrian’s motivations here. He’s been killing off prominent figures who oppose Ironwood, including Forest, trying to make it look like Ironwood himself is killing to keep them quiet. And it’s working. More points to Ironwood for throwing out, “I’m not really concerned about my public image” when Qrow accuses him of only caring about publicity. If Ironwood is secretly a horrible dictator who really doesn’t care about his people... he’s doing a very good job of hiding it.
He’s also super chill about Jaune talking back to him about the embargo, a sharp contrast to Jacques’ “How dare you speak to me that way!” when Weiss takes a similar tone. Like the party way back in Volume Four, Ironwood is presented as the clear hero to Jacques’ villain. He lets subordinates point out difficulties and potential mistakes he’s makings. Instead of just, you know, abusing them.
So yeah, Jacques is a thing. He shows up pissed that Ironwood commandeered his abandoned mine, but also he’s happy because he thinks Ironwood has screwed himself now. Jacques is gunning for a seat on the council and he hopes the military taking possession of private property, not matter how grimm-infested, will help. He accuses Ironwood of roping Weiss into all this, Weiss reasserts that it was her own decision to help, and we get a lovely moment of the team supporting her.
I’d just like to point out though, this is all proof that Weiss would have been just fine if they’d sent her to Atlas. The fandom was up in arms over that suggestion, making wild claims about how Jacques would kidnap her or something, but this scene canonically undermines all of that. Turns out Jacques didn’t have spies everywhere, waiting to scoop Weiss up the moment she landed. However long the group has been hanging out in Atlas, he had no idea she was here until she was standing right in front of him (and even then it took him a long minute to realize...) Turns out Jacques can’t just do whatever he pleases with another human being just because he’s her father. In Ironwood’s presence, which Weiss would have ended up in if she’d flown with Cordovin’s blessing, Jacques can’t touch her. Hell, he can’t do anything even if Weiss was alone. If Weiss is willing to dump racists in the trash with her semblance I think she’s gained enough confidence to do the same to Jacques if he dares try to hit her again. The moment the fandom went, ‘They clearly HAVE to steal military property/disable a CTV tower and risk this tenuous peace because poor Weiss would be done for if they just sent her to Atlas with an armed guard and a transformed Qrow and possibly Maria in a suitcase’ I was just, ‘... What?’ That was never a good justification and this scene just reinforces that.
The one (metaphorical) blow that Jacques manages to land is by telling Weiss how distraught her mother was when she left. I wonder if there’s any truth in that or if it’s pure manipulation.
As he leaves Winter flies in, clearly avoiding her father. Weiss gets partway through calling her out on that before Penny lands in their midst.
From here the episode really unravels. With the surprise half ruined, Ironwood takes the group up into the arena and presents them with their huntsmen licenses. Now, full disclosure. I said I wanted this back in the premiere. In fact, my exact words were,
“I don’t think the show would ever go for my suggestion of another school arc so they could finish their training, but at the very least we should provide some sort of loop-hole for these characters. Have Ironwood provide special licenses based on their heroics at the Fall of Beacon and their work since. Because right now we have a world that’s continually emphasizing being a huntsmen as a job, something you earn the right to call yourself, yet 95% of our group doesn’t have that right in the eyes of their society.”
And I still stand by that. In as much as I’m acknowledging that so long as the writing refuses to treat the group like the students they are, taking away that status is the next best thing. However, that was written before the story decided to re-emphasize precisely how not huntsmen-like the group is. Everyone remember that? It was a week ago, wherein the group was characterized like kids playing dress up, following the adults around, acknowledging that it feels like they’re real huntresses even though they’re not, and then they witnessed a fight that put their skills and maturity to shame. A part of me honestly is glad we’re not dealing with this as a moral issue anymore. The other part of me is going, “Really? You set up how the group is still a bunch of students and then turn around and give them licenses an episode later? Can we at least be consistent?”
It’s fine though. It’s done. Yay. They all have licenses. Even though they technically didn’t do the work required to obtain them. And they’re also still at least a year, probably two years, too young to have them. Considering that schools are a four year program. It’s fine.
The group doesn’t even seem happy to have them though. In fact, they trivialize the moment. That word exactly: “It almost feels trivial now.” I don’t think RT intends for the characterization to come across this way but man does the group sound arrogant. Wow. We’ve been given a huge amount of power and privilege when we technically haven’t earned it, have actually done quite a lot lately that should have resulted in punishments over rewards, this is entirely out of the blue, something we’ve all wanted for most of our lives... so thanks, I guess? We’re feeling kind of iffy. Ruby at least makes some sort of comment about how Ironwood doesn’t need to do this, which just lets him re-assert that they all totally deserve it. Besides, he needs all the help he can get. Remember, we’re about to tell everyone about Salem!
Obviously no one pipes up during this speech. There aren’t even shared guilty looks. They’re just... letting their lie become a part of their ascent into full-fledged huntsmen. Oh boy.
Overall this party just feels depressing as hell to me. Yes, let’s celebrate in an empty, creepy arena that’s a traumatic space for literally everyone here. Made worse by the fact that no one acknowledges this. Once again Penny functions purely as comic relief. I thought that finally, finally we would get a conversation between her and Ruby. Hey, Penny! We’re taking selfies and eating cake in the very place where you were horrifically murdered! Maybe we should talk about that?
Nope.
Instead we get a train wreck of a conversation between Qrow and Ruby. She brings up the fact that they’re all keeping secrets... and Qrow laughs.
The hypocrisy is really astounding here. Ozpin keeps a secret and gets punched into a tree, along with Oscar. Ruby keeps a secret and Qrow looks like he wants to ruffle her hair. She asks him if she’s just like Ozpin and he responds with, “Oz only trusted himself with the whole truth. You’re trusting others, just making sure they prove themselves first. I think that’s a pretty big difference.”
Okay. That’s one hell of a messy statement, but let’s take it at face value for a moment. So tell me, Ruby. Precisely what does Ironwood have to do to “prove himself” to you? How long do you feel you need to wait? One more mission? A dozen? A few weeks? Months? ...Years? There’s no surefire way for someone to prove that they’re trustworthy and if, after that person has already shared their own secret plan with you and continually treats you as an equal---please help me in this fight, feel free to talk back to me, here’s licenses so you’re legally a part of this team---you’re still iffy about their motivations... what more can they do? You might just keep waiting and waiting for some sort of sign, putting things off because telling them is so risky and you just want to be sure. You might even reach a point where you’ve known Ironwood for ages and you still haven’t told him because, well, you haven’t gotten that proof you were looking for yet. Especially if you were, say, in a time of peace where telling him only feels like a cruelty. Especially when you’ve been betrayed so many times before and are always fighting against those memories. Your little, ‘I’m just waiting until I know I can trust him’ could theoretically go on for decades because we can never absolutely know a person. Lionheart is proof of that. Ironwood might one day look to you and say, “How can you not trust me yet?” and you might respond with, “What have you done to prove to me, without a doubt, that I should?”
I’m reusing this:
Ruby is in precisely the same position Ozpin was with his inner circle. Including Qrow. If Ruby is unsure that a military-minded, incredibly stressed man should have this information now, despite how trustworthy he might seem, why would Ozpin have been sure of that a year earlier? Ironwood was the same military-minded, stressed, seemingly trustful guy. If Ruby felt like she couldn’t rely on Qrow mere weeks (or even days) ago because he kept refusing to stay in contact (something that was established way back at Beacon. That’s not new) and falling into drunk, pessimistic stupors, why would Ozpin feel like he could rely on him in other ways? Especially when those “other ways,” telling them about Salem’s immortality, would lead to absolutely nothing good. Seriously. Has the group suddenly come up with a plan to defeat her, proving that Ozpin was wrong not to bring more creative minds into the fray? No. Has the group fallen apart for a long stretch and has only now made noises about moving forward for the sake of moving forward, something they’d already agreed to do as huntsmen fighting immortal grimm? Yes. All telling them about Salem did was make them more depressed and stressed, the two things that draw literal monsters to their door. That’s it. Their goals and motivations are precisely the same as when they started: keep fighting. Ironwood, on the other hand, has to know about Salem because his plan hinges on her mortality. Ozpin risked nothing by keeping this secret from the group. He arguably saved them a lot of grief. Ruby, on the other hand, risks countless lives and chaos across Remnant because she’s letting Ironwood inch closer and closer to telling the whole world, all in an effort to muster up an army that will accomplish nothing.
Ruby is Ozpin in this scenario, but her secrets carry more weight than his ever did. This isn’t a group of teens feeling morally outraged that their leader told a lie; how dare you not tell us everything when we’re risking our lives... even though we’re always risking our lives and would continue to risk our lives whether you told us or not! This is an incredibly powerful general about to change the shape of the entire world if he doesn’t learn the truth. The stakes are nowhere near comparable. Combine that with the fact that Ruby and her friends just finished taking the high road. That’s the kicker here. That Ruby doesn’t just admit, ‘Yeah... I’m like Oz. Because he was right. You do sometimes need to keep secrets and it is hard to trust people.’ No, no, no, they have to keep demonizing him. Ruby needs reassurance that she’s nothing like that evil secret keeper... even though we can all see she 100% is. She’s arguably worse now that she wants to play the victim to Ozpin’s secret keeping while simultaneously doing the exact same thing to Ironwood. She’s arguably worse since her secrets risks far more lives than Ozpin’s ever did. Where’s the fandom’s outrage over Ruby’s manipulation? Who’s punching her? When they bring up Summer, Ruby needs to characterize her death as “another Oz secret” wherein, like the fandom, she assumes he holds responsibility before there’s any proof of that. Even when Qrow admits that Ozpin has no more idea how Summer died than he and Tai do, he rescinds it! “But who knows what he may have hidden from us over the years.” Excuse me, but you all need to stop gearing up to assign blame without evidence, especially when you all are currently committing the exact same sins Ozpin did. We’ve been doing this since Volume 5:
Yang: I just learned that my uncle is the one who kept his semblance and bird transformations secret from me, but I’m going to blame Ozpin for it and demand “no more” lies. Even though up until now he’s never lied to us.
Qrow: I just admitted that your mother’s death is her own secret, but I’m going to subtly blame Ozpin for it anyway and remind you, as well as the audience, that he could be keeping an untold number of secrets from us. Truly a horrific thing when we, too, are keeping a bunch of secrets.
It’s also just a complete OOC moment that Qrow would be laughing about Ruby keeping secrets and hugging her as he tells her to press on while likewise maintaining his suspicion of Ozpin. Because Qrow’s whole beef with Ozpin is that he’s supposedly “wasted” his life while serving him. Everything he does is worthless because of Salem’s immortality. So if he’s now (randomly?) on team, ‘Do things because they’re right even if we can’t win in the end’... why is he still upset? If he can admit now that all this work---building new CTV towers and taking up everyday missions---is still super important, then why isn’t he thanking Ozpin? ‘Oh wow. I realize now how worthwhile this work is, regardless of whether Salem can be defeated. I guess I do owe you that gratitude for allowing me to do it all in the first place.’ Is no one ever going to acknowledge that Ozpin was right? About their work and about the need to keep secrets? You all are literally adopting his views, his mindset, and his choices. But nope. Nothing. It’s just an illogical mix of ‘Everything we believe is what Ozpin taught us’ with ‘But oh yeah screw that guy.’
The only reason Qrow is all buddy-buddy with Ruby’s secret keeping is because he’s in on the secret. Objectively speaking, if Qrow had a right to know about Salem’s immortality than so does Ironwood. They were both inner circle members. They both served Ozpin for (presumably) the same amount of time. With the exception of maybe hearing about the brother gods---and even then Qrow didn’t take that story literally---they seemed to have the same level of clearance. Ironwood has done just as much to “prove” his loyalty as Qrow ever did, but he doesn’t want to admit that telling someone this kind of horrific info is just plain hard. So Qrow, like the entirety of RWBYJNR, makes it about their own status as heroes, adopting a ‘we’re totally different’ mindset. I get to know about Salem’s immortality. Ironwood though? No, no, we’re justified in keeping it from him. People just aren’t allowed to keep things from us.
It started off with Yang’s ‘How dare you keep secrets only I’m allowed to do that’ nonsense and has now spread to the entire group. We had an entire volume of people verbally and physically assaulting Ozpin in the name of his lies. Now Ruby does the exact same thing and gets hugs and praise for it. I spoke too soon last episode. The hypocrisy is unreal.
I honestly didn’t think RWBY was still capable of frustrating me to this extent, but here we are.
Oh, and so long as we’re riding this frustration train... where is Oscar?
He was not acknowledged once in this episode, let alone invited to the party. You know, the one that he could have really easily been flown in for now that the danger is gone. The one that Winter, Penny, Marrow, Elm and Vine all make an appearance at, but not the guy they’ve been traveling with and who is way more invested in his ‘friends’ getting their licenses than some random Ace Ops members. From here on out I’m officially calling BS on anyone who tries to justify the group/the writing excluding Oscar. There was no reason not to invite him to a planned celebration specifically designed to give this team, a team he’s a part of, a bit of downtime. Sorry you didn’t get an armor upgrade, or get to go on the mission, or get to attend the after party. Everyone just kind of forgot you exist or couldn’t be bothered to explain why you’re missing. RWBY really just doesn’t like him or Ozpin and boy, does it show.
The remaining plot is minimal. The group pulls up a mission board and Jaune gets roped into escorting school children, a mission with absolutely “no danger” in it. So if we actually get to see him completing this, you know they’ll be danger. As they continue choosing their first jobs as huntsmen we return to Jacques, brooding in his office. Whitley makes a brief appearance to announce that Watts has barged his way into the manor. We learn that everyone apparently thinks Watts is dead---that helps explain why they’re still using his code. A dead guy isn’t much of a threat---and Watts tells Jacques that he can help him regain his lost wealth, get a seat on the council, and screw over Ironwood. Through the pretty silly line of “Have your cake and eat it too.” I like that expression, but it’s hard to make it sound sufficiently threatening...
And that’s where we end! A rough ride this week, folks. Can’t complain about the break...
Until next time.
Minor Things of Note
Watts’ comment about how Whitley is the spitting image of Jacques makes me think of cloning. Like, I don’t think the writing would actually go there, but it’s a potentially cool option. Evil billionaire with access to fantasy technology has two rebellious daughters before finally just cloning himself a ‘son’...
Where is Maria? What is she doing? Can we please stop abandoning important characters and then having the cast acting like they ceased to exist?

Who Could Debut for Golden Knights in 2020?
Every new hockey season is full of opportunity. Some players will be looking to top a career-best point total, while others are looking to make their NHL debuts. Last season five players made their NHL debuts with the Vegas Golden Knights. Cody Glass (39 games), Nicolas Hague (38), Jake Bischoff (4), Gage Quinney (3), and Keegan Kolesar (1) were the players who got their shot last season. Additionally, Zach Whitecloud only had one game of experience prior to his mid-season call up. This year could bring much of the same, with such a promising group of young players waiting in the wings. Many things go into the decision to promote a minor league player. Injuries at the NHL level are the number one inhibitor. A dip in the play of a depth player and a desire to replace them, could also speed along a youngster’s development. Not to mention, exemplary play in the minor leagues could force a team into finding a spot for a surging player, on the big club. How long they stick is a whole different question. Was the benched or demoted player getting punished, receiving a wake-up call? How long will an injury last? Will trades occur? The questions continue to build. Only one thing can guarantee a NHL roster spot and that is production. You score, you play. You add value, you play. Coaches just want to win, right? Out of all the players who made their NHL debuts in Vegas last season, Glass arguably had the most successful one. That is no slight to a guy like Hague who was very solid and getting more comfortable by the shift, despite being saddled with two subpar defense partners. Glass was presented with more opportunity and he flashed the first-round talent he possesses. He also saw the need for some bulk, suffering a knee injury. By all accounts, he spent this past offseason putting on some muscle. He's been in Vegas, utilizing team facilities and doctors, looking to regain his roster spot and resume his profession ascent toward his first-round pedigree. Glass missed significant time to the injury. As a part of his evolution, former Head Coach Gerard Gallant slid Glass to the wing, with a roster packed with centers. A major caveat of playing wing is having an unforgiving wall and plexiglass at your side. As Brayden McNabb displays all too well, defensemen love to greet wingers at the blue line and staple them to that wall. Glass came up on the wrong half of an eye-opening collision with Jay Bouwmeester. If you’re a glass half full type - pun certainly intended - you tend to agree with promoting young, fast, talented players. Speed kills and the NHL has been moving in that direction for years. Pair that with the flat out creativity and skill possessed by these first-rounders and it’s hard to keep dynamic players down for seasoning, experience, and/or development. Looking forward, there are a couple Henderson Silver Knights who could conceivably make the jump to the NHL if a spot became available. Having reliable players on the “Black Aces” will be imperative with a minuscule camp and shortened season on the horizon. Keep scrolling for the Golden Knights’ biggest call up candidates for the 2020 season. Peyton Krebs: Draft Position: 2019 - 1st round, 17th overall Let’s get the obvious out there, Krebs is small, very small. In a 2019 media scrum discussing his Achilles injury, Krebs was the slightest of the bunch. His size could be a detriment and it will hinder him from sliding to the wing in a pinch. The Golden Knights have already crashed and burned in that regard with the similarly slight Cody Glass. Although there are Johnny Gaudreau types that succeed on the wing, it’s rare. None of that goes to say that Krebs can’t crack the NHL. He has out of this world talent and has produced at all levels of play. He was included on the Black Aces during this past playoff run and for good reason; the kid can play. He will follow an ascent similar to that of Glass, hopefully missing the injury portion. In a normal scenario, Krebs is at least a season or two away, but with expanded rosters and the AHL starting late, Krebs might once again find himself as a Black Ace. Path to a 2020 Debut: Krebs would need a few guys to underperform, have a huge camp, or benefit from the injury bug. In a creative move, he could slide right into Glass’ spot, if his injury woes resurface. They are two young men that project to play similar roles. Lucas Elvenes: Draft Position: 2017 - 5th round, 127th overall Elvenes is far from a shoot-first player, recording a mere 70 shots on goal in his first AHL season. Even still, the youngster led the team with 48 points (12g, 36a) in his 59 games played. He burst onto the scene with a goal and three assists in his debut, setting the table for a tremendous professional debut. Elvenes exceeded expectations and placed himself front and center in terms of call up options. Can 2020 be the year Elvenes makes his NHL debut and just as successfully? Path to a 2020 Debut: Ineffective bottom-six play or another season with a stagnant third line. Elvenes could be seen as a potential boost to the third scoring line if Alex Tuch struggles again. The Vegas Golden Knights need Tuch to regain his scoring touch and Elvenes’ distribution could help. Jack Dugan: Draft Position: 2017 - 5th round, 142nd overall A player who can turn out to be a diamond in the rough, Dugan had much success following his draft year at the NCAA level with 91 points in 75 games at Providence University. Dugan was a standout with his vision of the ice, passing ability, and sneaky shot. He’s tracking to start the season inactive until the AHL season starts in February, but he has an outside shot to become a Black Ace and practice with the big club. A shortened season cuts into his chances to crack the NHL this season, as the brass would likely prefer to see more than a month or two of professional tape before a recall. Dugan, like Glass could instantly boost a struggling Power Play, in the event he was called upon by Pete DeBoer and Co. This kid has scored everywhere he has played and has a bit of a mean streak to boot. He will be in the NHL, it’s just a matter of when. Path to a 2020 Debut: Like Elvenes, Dugan's best chance of a call up comes if the third line doesn’t produce for the Golden Knights. He’s a winger that could make an impact in a position they are relatively thin at. This roster is packed with centers and not guys who are particularly comfortable on the half wall. He’d also be a boost to the PP in the event the units struggle or if the Golden Knights suffer an injury to one of their top-four winger. Dylan Coghlan: Draft Position: Undrafted With Hague and Bischoff remaining in the way, Coghlan must make a massive impression on the coaches in camp, in order to crack this roster in 2020. While he is the most offensively gifted defenseman in the bunch - a need at the NHL level - his battle is surely uphill. Hague and Whitecloud both got considerable service time under their belts and Bischoff is looked at as a steady option on the back end. Path to a 2020 Debut: An injury to either of the two Golden Knights PP quarterbacking defensemen could necessitate promoting the young, dynamic shooter. She’s Theodore and Alex Pietrangelo will man the blue line with the man advantage from the jump. Coghlan’s talent with the puck could come in handy, if the team needed to boost to a healthy, but stagnant PP. Special Teams woes are nothing new to the Golden Knights and the NHL as a whole and this hypothetical could very well become a reality. As outlined previously, a number of factors go into these debuts, but every year there are at least one or two worth watching. This abbreviated season will be no different and might require more AHL support, with the challenges created by such a short training camp and/or preseason. The deeper the system, the better, for this go around. FCS Football: 2020 National Title Contenders
FCS college football tends to feature many of the same national title contenders year to year, and, of course, the scenario is led by the North Dakota State dynasty.
The 2020 postseason could have a familiar look because many of the teams that made deep playoff runs this past year appear primed for encores. The Bison will have a veteran team, something they didn't have going into the 2019 campaign, yet that didn't stop them from going 16-0 and winning a third straight FCS title and eighth in the last nine seasons.
They're favored to get back to the title game in Frisco, Texas, but other top programs are in the national title mix, too.
Here are eight teams that hope to be on top of the FCS in 2020.

North Dakota State Bison
Coach: Matt Entz (16-0, one season)
2019 Season: 16-0 (8-0 Missouri Valley), FCS champion, No. 1 Athlon Power Poll
Key Returnees: QB Trey Lance, RB Adam Cofield, WR Christian Watson, LT Dillon Radunz, RT Cordell Volson, OLB Jabril Cox, MLB Jackson Hankey, SS Michael Tutsie
3 Key Games: at Oregon (Sept. 5), at Northern Iowa (Sept. 26), South Dakota State (Oct. 17)
What to Know: The national champ will return 14 starters amid its wealth of talent. In 2019, Lance (42 total touchdowns, one turnover) became the most accomplished freshman in FCS history, named the outstanding player in the national championship game just one day after receiving the Walter Payton Award. Cox could be the top FCS prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft. Heading into their season opener at Oregon, the Bison have an FCS-record 37-game winning streak and a six-game winning streak against FBS opponents.

James Madison Dukes
Coach: Curt Cignetti (14-2, one season; 81-28 overall)
2019 Season: 14-2 (8-0 CAA), FCS runner-up, No. 2 Athlon Power Poll
Key Returnees: RB Percy Agywei-Obese, RB Jawon Hamilton, WR Jake Brown, OT Liam Fornadel, DT Mike Greene, NG Adeeb Atariwa, FS/PR D'Angelo Amos, PK Ethan Ratke
3 Key Games: Delaware (Sept. 5), at North Carolina (Sept. 19), at Villanova (Oct. 24)
What to Know: Tasked with replacing 13 starters, the Dukes surely won't match the dominance they showed throughout most of 2019. It's likely one of their backup quarterbacks, Cole Johnson or Gage Moloney, will have to rise to a higher level of play. Either way, the offense will boast one of the best running back units in the FCS. VMI transfer wide receiver Kris Thornton, who caught 87 passes in 2018, hopes to make an impact. Atariwa and Greene lock down the interior of the defensive line.

Insurance premium increase?
I was involved in a fender bender where no party admitted fault. Other persons insurance company went to arbitration against my insurance company to recover their loss. Arbitration Panel decided in our favor i.e. I am not at fault hence need not pay the damages. Total loss amount listed by other party was $800. My car did not have any damage worth repairing. (Also, I am lazy and passive enough to not pursue too hard for a minor dent.) After arbitration settlement other person filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. I was pretty sure that a judge cant do anything after arbitration. To my surprise judge assessed that out of $800 - $250 was the deductible paid by other person. Prior Arbitration did not include that amount hence he can adjudicate on this $250. He adjudicated against me for $250 + legal fee. Judge also told me that I need not worry about this money as my insurance will pay for it. (Most ridiculous judge and judgment I have ever seen, but thats a separate matter) I called up my insurance company. They are willing to pay this amount. My question is will making them pay increase my insurance premium. I have a pretty clean record with no at-fault accidents. I pay about $1000 per year for two cars in WA state. Insurance company is: Farmers""

New Post has been published on http://ooduarere.com/news-from-nigeria/world-news/anglozionist/
AngloZionist options (intermediate report) UPDATED
An AngloZionist attack on Syria appears to be inevitable and imminent. There is always a chance of a major pushback from some putative mentally sane, realistic and patriotic generals in the Pentagon, but I am not holding my breath (I asked two of my best informed friends about that, they both told me to forget about it). Counting on those who have made a life obeying orders to suddenly refuse one, and wreck their career in the process, is naive. Besides, most of what we now have at the Pentagon are not Admiral Fallon types, but rather the same “an ass-kissing little chickenshit” type à la Petraeus. They might not push for a confrontation with Russia, but they will do what they are told to. The commander of CENTCOM recently said just that (“we will do what we are told“).
However, what kind of attack options the US Neocons and their Israeli pals will chose is probably what is being debated right now. Here are the basic options
1) A repeat of last year’s attack on the Syrian Air Force base in Shayrat. That would be by far the best option and that would allow the Neocons a face-saving, even if entirely symbolic, “look how tough we are” option. They might as well strike the same T4 base the Israelis did a few days ago, just with more missiles. And, just to make this look all very “democratic” they might ask the French, Brits or Israelis to participate in that attack.
2) It is too late, militarily speaking, to try to reverse the situation on the ground, but hitting more Syrian Air Force bases, communication nodes, air defenses, etc. is definitely an option. Following such an attack, the US allies on the ground (the “good” and the “bad” terrorists) would go on the offensive and the Syrians and their allies would struggle to “plug the wholes” thus created. That would not fundamentally change the outcome, but would prolong the chaos and associated bloodbath.
3) Attack the Iranians. This is a grand favorite with the Israelis and the Neocons, but it is also a much risker option because if the attack is successful, the Iranians would have a huge number of potential US targets to chose from to retaliate, as would Hezbollah. Still, that would placate the Iran-haters, at least temporarily, and it would allow Trump to show how “tough” and “great” a guy he is.
4) A full scale attack on the Syrian military and on the government (including Presidential facilities). We are talking about hundreds of cruise missiles in the first wave. Targets would include not only purely military targets (ammo dumps, troop concentrations, etc.) but also the “regime support infrastructure”, i.e. civilians and that which makes civilian life possible: power plants, water purification, communications, bridges, roads, ports, schools and hospitals (“camouflaged regime objectives”) etc. Basically, that is what the US/EU/NATO did to Serbia and what the Israelis have done many times to Lebanon: murder as many civilians as possible to make them pay for supporting the “Animal Assad”. A time honored Anglo and Jewish tradition, by the way.
5) A deliberate attack on Russian and Iranian positions in Syria to “punish” them for supporting “Animal Assad’s” chemical attacks.
Of course, a combination of the options above are possible. Roughly speaking options 1, 2 and 3 might (conditional) remain manageable. Only option 1 is (relatively) safe. Options 4 and 5 are absolutely insane and are likely to result in an extremely dangerous escalation.
Let’s look at it from another point of view.
What would be the goal of a AngloZionist attack?
I think that we can all agree that nobody seriously believes that a actual chemical attack took place and that everybody knows that this is a (poorly) staged false flag predicted by both Nikki Haley and the Russians weeks ago. As for a full-scale reversal of the outcome in Syria or a reconquista by US/NATO, these are not militarily speaking realistic options.
So then what is the point?
1) Internal US politics: Trump wants to appease the Neocons and looks “tough”.
2) Make the Syrians, Iranians and Russians pay for defeating the “good” and “bad” terrorists.
3) Appease the always bloodthirsty Israelis and create a nice pretext to renege on the nuclear deal with Iran.
4) The need to act on the rhetoric (that one is often ignored, but the fact is that when a regime spews a constant stream of paranoid and hate-filled nonsense about another country, it eventually has to do something about it. Speaking of “Animal Assad” and do nothing about him just does not look good for The Donald).
5) Some hope to actually kill Assad (unlikely, the integrated Russian-Syrian air defenses will warn him of the attack).
6) Re-establish, by means of example, that the USA is still the biggest and baddest guy out there and that neither Iran nor Russia can do anything about it. Scare Russia and Iran into submission (I know, this is a stupid notion, but Neocons are not very bright!).
I think that we should not over-intellectualize all this. Frankly, I don’t think that the folks in the White House are very bright and that their level of planning is roughly similar to “if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. What they have is a mental hammer: the desire to lash out, to strike, to hurt, to punish. Just hatred and infinite arrogance.
As to where and how the hammer will strike – your guess is as good as mine.
Attempting to predict the actions of delusional psychopaths is an exercise in futility.
Besides, we will find out very soon.
The Saker
UPDATE1: RT reports that Russia and the US are both submitting resolutions to the UNSC. Both resolutions demand an international investigation; the OPCW announced its decision to dispatch a fact-finding mission to Syria. RT is also reporting that one Russian newspaper has declared that a top level Russia-US meeting over Syria is scheduled for next week. Maybe, just maybe, this insanity can be stopped?

Offensive Linemen: UNLV Class of 2018 Recruiting Roundup
By Mike Wintermute
Offensive Linemen
Under Coach Sanchez there has been an emphasis on getting UNLV’s O-Line bigger and meaner. This has especially been true the last two seasons as our running game has been top 20 in the country both years. There will be some questions to answer this year as some key departures leave big shoes to fill.
Key Departures
Kyle Saxelid (3-year starter at LT), J’Ondray Sanders (Center, RT), Michael Chevalier (Guard)
Key Returnees
Jaron Caldwell, Zack Singer, Julio Garcia, Nathan Jacobson, Justin Polu, Sid Acosta
Also up and coming are: Matt Brayton, Ashton Morgan, Donovan Outlaw, Justice Oluwaseun, Daniel Schoene
High School Recruits
Bryan Catchings
The Rebels added three players to this group in this signing period starting with Bryan Catchings from Oak Ridge High School, CA. He is a player who looks technically sound and will continue to grow into his frame. I believe he could be the center of the future (Sid Acosta and Zach Singer will most likely man this spot in the spring). Catchings possesses the same feature most of our lineman under Sanchez have, which is playing THROUGH the whistle.
Watch: Bryan Catchings’ Hudl Film
Amani Trigg-Wright
Next we come to Amani Trigg-Wright from McClymonds High School near Oakland, CA. This is a big physical blocker who is much in the mold of those in the last two classes of linemen Sanchez has brought in. Amani spent most of his time at RT as a senior but also played some guard. It will be interesting to see where the coaches project him at this level. He moves very well and finishes his blocks, driving his opponents down field.
Watch: Amani Trigg-Wright’s Hudl Film
Transfer Recruit
Keenan King
Rounding out the group is Keenan King, a Pac-12 transfer from Washington State. King is coming home to Vegas (attended Arbor View High School) and will have to sit out the 2018 season. King was a highly regarded recruit out of high school and is looking for a fresh, start and Coach Sanchez was very excited to bring him home. He will be a valuable practice player testing UNLV’s defensive line all spring and during fall camp.
Watch: Keenan King’s Hudl Film
Final Thoughts
The biggest question for the offensive line this spring will be identifying who will takeover at left tackle, and watching the battle for the center spot. Acosta was on track to start until a knee injury caused him to redshirt last season.
With a new offensive line coach in Garin Justice it will be interesting to see if there are any position switches, as well as seeing who rises in the two-deep depth chart this spring and heading into the fall. The trenches are the hardest place for young players to see time early, and with plenty of depth coming back it might be a year or two until we see Trigg-Wright and Catchings hit their full potential.

Note
After that finale, I just feel tired. The world continues to bend around the protagonists, the villains are still not compelling for a lack of backstory, and the characters in the middle have such wildly shifting characterization that it's hard to trust that any investment in their storylines will pay off. I really appreciate your recaps because I've felt kind of like this for the last half of the season, and they make me feel like I'm not crazy for that :)
Tired pretty much covers it, yeah. It says a lot that the one-note villains were, by far, the best part of the volume for me. We’ve reached a point where that level of simplicity is actually preferred. At least I know they’re not going to ruin Tyrian’s character by making him randomly join up with the heroes, yelling for peace. Or provide a really offensive depiction of Watts’ mental health. (One of the reasons I’m not too disappointed we didn’t seem Emerald and Mercury at all. Given the handling of Ozpin and now Ironwood, I really don’t trust RT writing those two...) Ah, when the bad parts of the story end up doing a full circle and become good by comparison lol
But I’m thrilled you enjoy the recaps! I’d got the same exact feelings. [Chucks writing into the tumblr void] [Receives similar thoughts back] “Oh thank god, okay, it’s not just me then.”

The NFL’s most surprising offensive lines and the biggest disappointment
Retired NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz shares his o-line thoughts at the halfway point of the season.
It’s time to write about my favorite subject as we head into the second half of the NFL season — offensive line time! The engine that motors the vehicle. I’ll get into the biggest surprises and disappointments in the first half, and look forward to the storylines in the second half of the season.
Let’s start with surprises, because those are always so fun.
The biggest surprise is easily the Rams offensive line.
It’s not a surprise when you look at the talent on the line. Andrew Whitworth, Rodger Saffold, John Sullivan, Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein. You won’t find many lines with that many resources used to build the unit. The Rams need to be praised for signing Whitworth, despite his age, 35. They watched film and properly evaluated him.
Here’s Rams head coach Sean McVay talking about Whitworth’s age: “When you look back at the history of the league, it's kind of a little bit different based on finding a tackle with his amount of experience, but I think it's also important to consider what does the tape look like, what is the production down-in and down-out, how does he take care of himself.
"He's played at a Pro Bowl-caliber level for the last couple of years and been extremely efficient, extremely productive. He takes great care of himself. I think that's why you see him kind of as the outlier for those tackles that you go pay them the amount of money that you do. He's certainly making us right on that decision right now."
So bravo to the Rams for snagging up Whitworth. Along with his mates and McVay’s run schemes, the running game has taken off. Last season, the Rams averaged a poor 3.3 yards per carry and 78.2 yards a game. This season it’s 4.2 yards a carry and 127.6 yards a game. Also, they are on pace to cut their sacks by more than half. Last season, 49 sacks and this season, only 10 in eight weeks.
Consolation prize for most surprising line goes to the Saints.
The biggest disappointment for an offensive line is the Raiders.
It’s not because they aren’t any good. Their guys upfront are killers. They are physical, they finish guys and want to work for the extra yards. I’m putting this on the offensive coordinator.
The Raiders brought in a new OC for the 2017 season, one who wants to run outside zone. The Raiders offensive line is built to run straight ahead, which they have done for years. It’s been a struggle at times trying to make the switch. The Raiders are averaging seven fewer rushing attempts each week and only 88 yards per game.
The seven fewer attempts could be a function of their record and being behind in games. Never the less, it’s not the same production for this offense. Last season, they had 19 runs of 20-plus yards; this season, only three. That’s scheme, production upfront and the lack of an explosive running back. It all goes together
For the second half of the season, the clear storyline for offensive line units is health.
Health for big ticket players teams are counting on. We have lost Joe Thomas, Jason Peters, Marshall Yanda, Jack Mewhort. Ryan Kalil has been out most of the season, Trent Williams has a bum knee. Tyron Smith’s back is hurting him. Kyle Long has missed time as well. Injuries are part of this game — I know that well — but it feels like more injuries than usual for the big dogs this season.
From that list, there are three that concern me the most, and all three happen to be in the same division. The Eagles are 7-1 and their offensive line has been outstanding. Having Lane Johnson back has been positive. Stefen Wisniewski has done well at left guard, and then of course Peters, Brandon Brooks and Jason Kelce have played well.
But Peters is now out for the season, and Halapoulivaati Vaitai has taken over at left tackle. I love that Doug Pederson and staff decided to keep Lane Johnson at RT, who’s been fantastic this season. If you move Lane, then you weaken two spots along the line.
With Vaitai at left tackle, the Eagles can scheme up ways to get him help. In his first start for Peters, Sunday against the 49ers, he predictably had his ups and downs but held his own. Most of his mistakes were mental mistakes, ones that can fixed with just by playing more. I hope the Eagles offense can still flourish with him. They are fun to watch
Tyron Smith, the Cowboys left tackle, is a generational talent. It’s been quietly reported that he’s had a bad back for a few years now. He doesn’t practice during the week, which isn’t unique for some veterans, but when you watch him play, he’s just not the same player.
This segues to a broader topic of the Cowboys line without Ezekiel Elliott for six games. Zeke is special because he can turn a 3- or 4-yard run into a 8- or 9-yard run. His vision, burst, and acceleration all make him special. The Cowboys will miss that over these six weeks.
Trent Williams has been the anchor of Washington’s offensive line for years. The offensive line has to play well, and stay upright, for that offense to move along. So Williams being hampered is an issue. So is right guard Brandon Scherff, who’s beat up right now. Washington doesn’t have enough playmakers on the outside to just chuck it around to help an offensive line who has trouble with run blocking or pass protecting.
More random notes about offensive lines
I have no idea why the Panthers can’t run the ball without Ryan Kalil. They have excellent powerful guards, and even Larson in the middle isn’t bad. Matt Kalil on the left and Daryl Williams on the right can run block, so it makes no sense why they can’t run the ball better. It’s possible that teams are playing the Panthers differently, i.e. extra box defenders, because Cam isn’t a big threat to run anymore. Also, the Panthers passing game leaves something to desired. Stewart is getting older, and McCaffrey hasn’t been as advertised between the tackles.
The Saints are fun to watch. Their offensive line has gelled and their young players have improved. If you get a chance, watch them on Sundays.
The Chiefs offensive line was playing at high level before injuries wrecked them. They are starting to get healthy now. Center Mitch Morse was back on Monday night, and right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif should be back soon from a knee injury. Look for the Chiefs offense to continue to roll as they get these guys back.
Duane Brown in Seattle. I LOVE this. He’s going to improve that run game and give Wilson time to throw the ball. The Seahawks offense, which can be fantastic at times, and infuriating as well, should be able to stabilize with Duane Brown in there.
Will Taylor Decker be back this season for the Lions? The Lions have been riddled with injuries and could use Decker back at full strength.
If I missed your favorite offensive line, you can tweet me at @geoffschwartz. I’ll answer your question

How Did Any of These Guys Get Hired by Trump?

How Did Any of These Guys Get Hired by Trump?
Monday’s double blockbuster from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation—indictments of Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, and a plea deal with George Papadopoulos—is at once an enormous advance in the story and highly unsatisfying. While these are important milestones in the probe, their import on the most interesting question, of whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, is opaque.
For the time being, however, there’s one clear takeaway: Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, and George Papadopoulos should have never been anywhere near a major presidential campaign, and their hiring reinforces concerns about President Trump’s judgment.
Related Story
Robert Mueller Is Just Getting Started
Trump is not a policy expert, and although he occasionally boasted that he would learn what he needed on the job, his real sell to voters was that he would be an effective manager and dealmaker. For the details, he promised repeatedly, he would hire the best people. Instead, his campaign empowered a pair of aides who, according to prosecutors, were years into a $75 million money-laundering scheme, and named a foreign-policy aide with little experience who fancied himself a savvy global operator. The reasons why Manafort, Gates, and Papadopoulos were disastrously unwise picks were different, although they are all converging in the special counsel’s investigation.
When Manafort joined the Trump team, in March 2016, the campaign had little capacity for vetting. The barebones team had unexpectedly rampaged through the Republican presidential field, in spite of repeated missteps and gaffes. But the campaign team consisted of inexperienced, flailing aides, and the campaign was in danger of facing a floor fight for the nomination at the Republican National Convention. Manafort had experience in floor fights, dating to a 1976 battle between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, and besides, he came recommended by his former business partner Roger Stone, an occasional adviser to Trump.
(Stone, too, has been swept up in the Mueller probe, with scrutiny on his contacts with a hacker calling himself Guccifer 2.0, who U.S. officials believe was a Russian agent. Trump’s reliance on Stone, an eccentric with a history of racist comments and veneration of Richard Nixon, also suggests questionable judgment.)
In a tweet Monday, Trump downplayed the Manafort indictment. “This is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign,” he wrote. Trump couldn’t have known the full scale of Manafort’s alleged money-laundering operation—there had, to that date, been no charges filed against him. (Manafort pleaded not guilty Monday in federal court in Washington.) But there were plenty of reasons to be wary. Bloomberg View’s Eli Lake warned, “Trump just hired his next scandal,” noting the lengthy series of corruption scandals to which Manafort had been linked.
The fact that Manafort, a hired-gun operative, was willing to work for free ought to have raised alarms. It’s also hard to imagine that Trump didn’t know about Manafort’s work for Yanukovych, for example. And once the campaign knew, it could easily have checked and discovered that Manafort (and Gates) had not disclosed the work under the Foreign Agent Registration Act. He should also have been aware of Manafort’s long ties to the Kremlin, especially through Oleg Deripaska. His campaign should have asked Manafort if he was indebted to Deripaska, as appears to have been the case. There’s no indication that Trump saw these facts as weaknesses; Trump was arguing for improved relations with Russia, and after Manafort was pushed out of the campaign, in part over reports about what almost $13 million he received from Yanukovych’s party, several of Trump’s friends floated him large loans.
Manafort’s decision to join the Trump campaign is somewhat baffling. Although he pleaded not guilty to charges including false and misleading statements under the Foreign Agent Registration Act, Manafort retroactively filed under FARA earlier this year, indicating that he realized his failure to file might become a legal problem. Even if Manafort couldn’t have anticipated the scope of the Mueller probe, putting himself in a top role in a presidential campaign was a surefire way to draw scrutiny to his past ties and to any legally dubious behavior.
Manafort left the campaign in August—in addition to the Yanukovych allegations, he was unhappy, had found himself unable to control Trump, and was pushed into a more limited role by the ascension of Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway. But Gates, who faces the same charges as Manafort and also pleaded not guilty Monday, stuck around long after that. First, he served on Trump’s inaugural committee, and then he went to work for an outside political group lobbying on behalf of the administration, from which he was forced out in April as the Russia probe intensified. Even though Gates lacked Manafort’s track record, his closeness to Manafort should have rung all the same alarm bells.
Papadopoulos’s role on the campaign reflects a different sort of dubious judgment. Rather than bringing excessive baggage like Manafort and Gates, he arrived at the campaign’s doorstep carrying only a flimsy valet. A 2009 college graduate, he was hired as a foreign-policy adviser despite a resume so thin that he cited Model UN experience in college as a qualification.
Almost immediately, there were signs of his unreadiness. The statement of the offense, a government document that lays out the facts both sides agree on in relation to his guilty plea, paints Papadopoulos as having been quickly cultivated by Russian actors, credulously believing one’s claim of relation to Putin. Meanwhile, inside the campaign, his constant pushing for meetings between the campaign and the Russian government or a trip by Trump to Russia raised concerns among higher-ranking staffers, who saw the idea as at least improper and possibly illegal. Manafort wrote to Gates, “Lets discuss. We need someone to communicate that DT is not doing these trips. It should be someone low level in the campaign so as not to send any signal.”
It appears, from the statement of the offense, that Papadopoulos viewed himself as a swashbuckling globetrotter, establishing contacts in the Russian government and foreign ministry, jetting the globe, and brokering meetings. Once questioned by the FBI, Papadopoulos lied to them and then attempted to cover his tracks as though he were in a movie, deleting his Facebook account (through which he’d communicated with Russians) and getting a new cellphone.
The indictments of Manafort and Gates and the guilty plea from Papadopoulos appear to be only the very start of Mueller’s investigation. One potential target is Michael Flynn, the former national-security adviser fired for lying to the vice president about his contacts with the then-Russian ambassador. It’s astounding that Flynn, too, was a central figure in the Trump campaign and even more that he was named national-security adviser. He, too, has filed a retroactive FARA disclosure, having worked on behalf of the Turkish government while working for the Trump campaign, right up to his appointment. He was also engaged in a peculiar plan to build nuclear reactors in the Middle East, and reportedly did not disclose a trip to and payment from Russia for a celebration of RT, the Kremlin-funded propaganda channel.
Trump’s faulty hiring process has continued to bedevil him, with frequent turnover in the adminstration—he’s on his second national-security adviser, third communications director, second press secretary, second chief of staff, and has seen several other positions clear out as well. During Monday’s White House briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders downplayed the day’s news. “Look, today’s announcement has nothing to do with the president, has nothing to do with the president’s campaign or campaign activity,” she said. As my colleagues Matt Ford and Adam Serwer report, that’s likely a premature judgment about where Mueller’s probe is going, but it’s also misleading to say these cases don’t reflect on the campaign or the president. The campaign’s hiring processes suggest grave lapses in the president’s personnel decision and his judgment.

Monday Night Football: Three key matchups
Here is Part 3 of the week three edition of Tale of Tape. This week’s opponent is the Arizona Cardinals. Dallas has to come off of one of the worst losses in the Jason Garrett era and get right back on a plane this week for Arizona. This game represents the latest installment in what used to be an annual trip between division rivals. While the teams no longer occupy the same division, Arizona is both a place where there are a ton of Cowboys fans, and a place where the local team’s fans hold division foe-level animosity to the team with the Star on their helmet.
We have looked at how these teams compare by position. We already discussed the offensive side of the ball and the defense and special teams in earlier posts this week. In boxing, styles make fights and in football, matchups decide games. As much as the Cardinals will be focused on the fact that Ezekiel Elliott is the engine for the Cowboys success, Sunday’s outcome will be decided by both team’s ability to pass. Now it’s time discuss the top 3 matchups that will decide the final outcome on Sunday night.
DE Demarcus Lawrence vs RT Jared Veldheer
Demarcus Lawrence is giving Cowboys fans some hope that the long winding road to a pass rush has a light at the end of the tunnel. He is definitely making the most of his opportunities in his contract year. He is now showing consistency in his ability to breakdown the opponent’s tackle. In fairness, he is also benefitting from being able to rush from the left DE position where he doesn’t have to face LTs who are usually the better pass blockers. The Cowboys are getting Damontre Moore back this week and they hope that the attention Lawrence is beginning to receive can free up Moore and the other defensive linemen to make their own impact on the quarterback.
On the other side of the field, Jared Veldheer is helping to rejuvenate the Cardinals offensive line. He came over to Arizona after being a 3rd round pick of the Oakland Raiders in 2010. The Raiders hoped that Veldheer would solve their pass protection issues but were unwilling to pay to keep him when he became an unrestricted free agent. Veldheer has struggled to man the LT spot throughout his career but had received rave reviews about his transition to RT this offseason. Now, because of injuries on the line, Arizona is shuffling to get their best healthy five linemen on the field. Lining up across from Lawrence will be a tall task the way he has played thus far, and keeping the pressure off of Carson Palmer will be vital for the Cardinals to successfully defend their home field on Monday night.
CB Patrick Peterson vs WR Dez Bryant
Patrick Peterson has been a full on beast at corner since his first play in the league. He is recognized as one of the best corners and he is one of the only top corners that travels with the opponent’s best WR all game. He has been able to eliminate players that are the centerpiece of their offense the teams he faces. Peterson does this with elite speed and agility that allows him to eliminate separation from even the best WRs. He will most likely stay with Dez Bryant wherever he lines up in the formation and seek to make Dak Prescott look elsewhere for an open receiver.

Dez Bryant has been target repeatedly this season but the results have left a lot to be desired. A quick review of the Twitter GMs out there has Bryant written off as “declining” and thinks he is no longer a top WR1. The truth is very far from that. Dez has had some great matchups with defenses early this season and he has also been hurt by Dak Prescott struggling with his accuracy. A little more touch from Prescott and Dez could already have 2-3 TDs and none of this conversation would be taking place at all. Bryant has been a scoring machine for the majority of his career and the Cowboys need that from him moving forward to be successful in 2017. In fact, his two previous matchups with Peterson have seen him find the end zone. The Cowboys need him to win enough to keep the defense from forgetting about him and flooding the zones where Witten and Beasley work.
RT La’el Collins vs OLB Chandler Jones

This matchup is the 3rd straight major test for La’el Collins in his transition to the right tackle position. Collins was great in week one, and was decent against Von Miller in week two even though Miller wound up getting his stats. There is no rest for the weary as the saying goes. He will need to strap it back up this week, and battle with another formidable pass rusher in Chandler Jones. The team has to do a much better job of staying ahead of the chains, and limiting the times when Jones can just rush with no thought of the run. The tight ends also have to be much better when they give Collins help. If Collins can’t handle Jones off the corner, the Cowboys will have a second week facing a long flight home with a loss.
Oct 2, 2016; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals outside linebacker Chandler Jones (55) recovers a fumble as defensive end Ed Stinson (91), Los Angeles Rams tight end Lance Kendricks (88) defends during the second half at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Chandler Jones has continued to progress into one of the league’s premier pressure players. He is also one of the very few players that Bill Belichick let go in New England that has been able to sustain his success with his new team. Jones plays outside linebacker in Arizona’s 3-4 base defense but he is built like a prototypical right defensive end in a 4-3. This allows him to rush effectively both standing up in the base defense and with his hand in the dirt in their nickel packages. Jones wins with speed and power and his toolbox of rush moves is very diversified and well developed. He is also strong against the run as his length allows him to hold off his blocker and shed to make plays.
Which matchup do you think will be the key to victory or defeat for the Cowboys? Is there a different matchup that caught your eye? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter @bigharb06.

Bosnia and Herzegovina can free Russia's hands to destabilize the situation in the Balkans
We cannot deny the facts of Russia’s intervention in policy and internal affairs of other countries.Whether cyber-attacks in France, Germany or the United States, or military intervention in Syria, Ukraine, the PMR, North Ossetia and Armenia. In addition, there are incidents of the arrival of the Russian side in the Balkan countries. The most significant presence of Russian influence on the public is in countries such as Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro. The next country that is likely to suffer from the Russian Federation may be Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Last month, while on a working visit to Montenegro and talking about unacceptable Russian behavior around the world, US Senator John McCain said that "there is evidence that Russians are trying to pick up a democratic process in other parts of the world." This fact is not a secret. Actually, as well as the fact that stability in the Balkans keeps on the trot Russian President Vladimir Putin. This stability makes the Balkan countries the most likely target for the Russian intervention. As the Russian presence in countries such as Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, frees the hands of Vladimir Putin and gives him unlimited opportunities for provocation against the West, which is hateful to him.
It is well-known that Serbia is not going to retreat from the course of being admitted to the European Union, but, at the same time, Serbia does not want to leave behind a strong relationship with Moscow, which she considers important toitself, not so much culturally and religiously as for mercenary purposes (economic, energy and military). This was used by Russia, which over the past two years increased its influence in the media sphere of Serbia, which led to a change in public opinion in the country in favor of Russia, and not in favor of the European Union.
Thus, according to the information provided by the Belgrade Center for Euro-Atlantic Studies, the number of Russian media and non-governmental organizations in Serbia has increased 10-fold since 2015, and now there are more than 100 such organisations. According to experts from the American analytical company Stratfor, the two main news networks of the Kremlin are "Sputnik"and" RT "(formerly Russia Today) - began broadcasting in Serbian, the Russian state newspaper RossiyskayaGazeta, which publishes the weekly “Nedelnik” in Moscow, also offers publications in Serbian language and sends them to Serbia. It is not difficult to guess that all the materials available in these media are imbued with Russian propaganda and anti-Western rhetoric.
Besides the creation of the Russian-Serbian Humanitarian Center located on the territory of Serbia and joint military exercises, it is reported that the government of the republic will receive free of charge Mig-29 fighters, tanks and combat vehicles from Russia. It is also possible that the Serbs will acquire and anti-aircraft missile systems “Buk”. Of course, even based on the available data, one cannot speak of Serbia's 100% commitment to the Russian Federation. After all, this republic is directedto the European Union, and Russian "goods" are quite possiblefor its benefits. But we cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that Russia is expanding military supplies and increasing its support and influence, too.
However, in addition to the ambiguous situation with Serbia, there is another state that Russia wants to steamroll. And this state is Bosnia and Herzegovina. Kremlin is now attempting to increase its influence there. And the President of RepublikaSrpska, who has never concealed his ties with Moscow, eagerly plays on the Russian side. He even offered to hold a referendum on the independence of the Republic, which is clearly similar to what was held in due time in the Crimea (and here there is an intervention by Russia, which already has a hand full in such matters). At the same time, more and more Russian media appear in Bosnia and Herzegovina, getting there through the Serbian border and spreading Russian propaganda to the audiences.
Besides the building up of its presence in the republic through print media, the Kremlin is also trying to expand its military presence. Thus, reliable sources said that during the meeting of the leadership of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior (GU MVD) of Russia in the city of Moscow and the Minister of Internal Affairs of the RepublikaSrpska, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation and the RepublikaSrpskareached an agreement concerningthe purchase of weapons from the Russian side on preferential terms.
But the most disturbing is the intention to send the instructors of the Russian police to the Republic for the alleged preparation of local representatives of law enforcement agencies. According to the data, the Kremlin plans to establish a humanitarian center on the territory of the RepublikaSrpskasimilar tothe existing Russian-Serbian center in Serbia. They planned to allocate the territory of the air base, which at one time was the main base of the air force and air defense forces of the RepublikaSrpska, and the territory of the military airfieldto accommodate this center. The most interesting in this situation is that the territories planned to be occupied by the representatives of Russian law enforcement agencies are located in the village of Mahovlyani, which is located 20 km from the city of Bania Luka (the actual capital of the RepublikaSrpska), and in the village of Zaluzhany, which is located on the northern outskirts of the city of Bania Luka.
It is not for nothing that the Kremlin has chosen exactly these two settlements near the city of Bania Luka, after all this city is the only major city in the RepublikaSrpskaBania Luka, which is located relatively near the borders of the republic (up to the border with Croatia, the distance is just over 45 km), which creates additional advantages in the conduct of offensive operations. In addition, this city has several advantages, or more precisely three - it is in the center of the conventional triangle of the three Balkan capitals: Sarajevo, Belgrade and Zagreb. In this case, it is not excluded that, hiding behind the creation of an allegedly humanitarian center, the Russian Federation wants to increase its military potential in the Balkan Peninsula. And, given such a favorable location of the city, Russian law enforcement agencies that will be stationed on the territory of the RepublikaSrpska can fully take advantage of the location of their forces and achieve incitement among the Balkan countries.
Overall, it can be assumed that the intentions of the Russian Federation in Bosnia and Herzegovina are quite obvious: it is trying to increase the presence of its security forces in the Balkans in order to strengthen geopolitical influence on the countries of the region and impede the process of their integration into the European Union and NATO. This scenario has more than once been worked out by Russia in practice and it has repeatedly covered up its self-interested intentions with a desire to help. One thing remains unclear, why should Bosnia and Herzegovina get involved in the games the Kremlin is leading? And why should Bosnia and Herzegovina allow the Russian Federation power structures to enter their state at the official level? After all, it is simply to open news and follow the actions of Russia: wherever it comes to "help" it brings only death and ruin.
