OOOOOH WHERE TO START,,, im assuming you just mean dn so I'll stick with that. in no particular order:

time speaks--okay so I know I just said no particular order but this one doesn't count. this is quite literally The Best fanfic I have ever read. its insanely long but genuinely worth every minute. within the first few chapters alone I had to get up and pace the room multiple times because its so absurdly well-written. im not even gonna try to describe it because I won't be able to do it justice.

twist your arctic heart--we love scenarios where light thinks hes in control but feels even more vulnerable in the aftermath. a classic yotsuba arc wet dream fic with some extremely well done characterization.

a tithe to hell--imo this would be The dn fic if time speaks didnt exist. PERFECT characterization, light going increasingly crazy, and a happy ending on top of all of it.

one last try before the core's collapse--angsty lawlight time loop fic. my weakness.

self surgery--mildly ooc sadomasochism pwp with some fantastic psychological overtones. also lawlight gunplay.

perfect life--this is THE psychological torture lawlight fic. its SOOOO good I cannot recommend this one enough. I fucking love innocent teenager light yagami and creepy sadistic L.

heat stroke--wouldnt be surprised if you've already read this, seeing as it's one of quinn's works, but its still one of my favs. L breaks the air conditioner on purpose to see how long it will take light to snap.

wired--my favorite surveillance era voyeurism fic. light thinks he has the upper hand but ends up feeling miserable.

this is how i disappear--quite possibly the most painful fanfic I have ever read. light's on the death row and man. it fucking hurts. I cannot recommend this one enough.

lie cold, consent--part of my own personal niamero canon; 14 year old mello assaults 12 year old near out of jealousy and resentment. INSANELY well-written erotic horror.

not death note, but I desperately want to share a fic that is a huge inspiration for the elementary/high school au, to meet again. this is a superb wangxian (wei wuxian x lan wangji, MDZS) modern au/reincarnation fic where lan wangji grooms wei wuxian, and the prose are just absolutely amazing. tbh no knowledge of MDZS needed to read the fic and completely understand it, so if you want a little inside info on what I reread to write playtime's over, definitely give it a read.

this was VERY long and honestly there are so many more fics that I could recommend, but these are just the top ones. I hope you enjoy and would love to hear your thoughts on any of them!!

Tobiizu as Lawlight (except both died at the same time bc spicy rivalry death)

Im actually incredibly mad at you for sending me this ask bc it has to be THE best premise literally ever but I dont know how to work with it bc Death Note is such a messy, overcomplicated, truly deranged everything, that I dont even know where to START with it

Both of them would make for pretty good Kira's honestly, but also just as good in L's position. I cant choose!!

Izuna L and Tobirama Light plays into the Uchiha -> police pipeline, plus Tobirama's pretty canon accurate characterization of believing he knows best when it comes to the safety of konoha the world

Izuna as Light and Tobirama as L plays into Tobirama getting to be a smart boy detective and Izuna's own "trust me I know whats best (indiscriminate murder)" Plus it still gets the Uchiha -> police bit bc Madara can take the place of Light's cop dad.

Also I personally see Izuna as a very charming guy and Tobirama more socially awkward, so that could match up well too

but also also it's that social unawarness that could make Tobirama such a good Light, seeming normal and charming on the surface but then just clueless ab what the fuck is normal the second you spend more than a minute eyeing him

Mmmmm. Im gonna have to say Izuna for Light and Tobirama for L just bc theres no universe where Izuna doesnt have a carefully kept hair routine and that makes him a better Light than an L

the take that lawlight and other ships involving Light and an older character are not problematic because “Light Yagami is incapable of being groomed” is doing rounds on dntwt again and holy shit it drives me insane every time i see it because

(“you” below refers to people with this take, not you)

1. what the hell is this victim-blaming logic when you’re literally talking about it as something applicable to the real world. no one is immune to being groomed.

2. to speak of the idea in-universe, I’m pretty sure that is just factually untrue. Light can definitely be groomed and has many traits that make him susceptible

3. no one is immune to being groomed. Light being manipulative, “evil”, intelligent or ““mature for his age”” (oh boy) does not prevent him from grooming in any capacity. in fact those traits combined with his arrogance make him a easy target as long as the perpetrator knows what to say

4. if you’re uncomfortable with the idea that lawlight is grooming, you can just think and say that you do not view lawlight’s dynamic as grooming. that would be reasonable, at least in comparison to fucking “light is immune to being groomed”

5. (pardon my language but) why in the fuck would you phrase it like “I’m sorry but if you can *insert a bunch of things that don’t prevent anyone from being groomed* then I’m NOT gonna believe you got groomed” like do you know how you sound right now????

6. have I mentioned that no one is immune to being groomed.

frankly, as someone who doesn’t usually prefer to view lawlight as full-on “adult grooming child” (I do think the existing age gap is a very intriguing factor but generally it is not my top preference to take it to the extreme in my own conception of it; it is very interesting to see as an alternative though, I respect it), I feel MUCH safer around everyone in this dn tumblr circle than people who say that shit. respect and salute to you all 🫡

I'd like to explore the mention of discomfort with the topic. That shit is normal and human. Not everyone likes sexualizing horror, not everyone understands everything you need for it to feel safe, AND, and this is a wildly different but still important factor in fandom interaction, not everyone DOES think it's plausible for the universe. You can think things don't match your headcanon for how you interpreted the work! I made a post yesterday along those lines about a fanfic I was reading! The thing is, don't attack real people (if you think someone's handling a subject in fiction in a way that does real harm, like E.L. James for my example, you don't send hate mail, you tell people why it's harmful and boycott the work); be aware that canon is subjective even if you have some textual evidence to back your view up - feel free to present said evidence, but nobody has to take it to heart and you can't make them; and above all, if it's pertaining to these types of topics, DO NOT USE THE VICTIM TO CONTRADICT IT. USE THE SUPPOSED PERPETRATOR. If you don't think L is a groomer, say so, if you don't think lawlight involves grooming, go for it, but Light Yagami better not fucking be a pillar of your argument because victims are never the reason something happened to them, which means they are also never the reason something didn't happen. I kinda understand “minors don’t interact” and similar things, but one thing I always laugh at is “don’t tag as [thing].” You know — the whole don’t tag posts with the word queer in them as q slur, don’t tag not-inherently-shippy art as ship, don’t tag character posts as kin, etc. First of all, what would you do if someone DOES tag it like that? Call the cops? Second of all, people are gonna tag things however they want, you’re gonna have to deal with that on a website like tumblr.

There’s a similar phenomenon on Twitter where people say “don’t quote retweet”/“don’t private quote retweet” (which is especially funny cuz everyone is gonna see that and go on their private accounts and quote retweet with nonsense to piss you off, lmao)

Like if you’re really SO FUCKING SCARED of your gay post being tagged as #q slur, your Death Note edit being tagged as #Lawlight, your fanart being tagged as #kin, you probably shouldn’t be on the internet. Do you have the right to not view queer as a slur, the right to not ship whatever, the right to not like fictionkin? Of course! But people also have the right to disagree with you and tag your post however the fuck they want. One time I saw someone tag one of my cosplays as [character] faceclaim, and I was a little bit weirded out, but overall it was harmless. I never once considered adding a banner saying not to tag my likeness as a faceclaim, because if I really want to prevent anyone from doing that, the solution will be for me to not show my face online.

Small tangent: When I was younger I used to have a private sideblog that was basically just a venting diary. No one had the password, and, because it was private, my URL wouldn’t show up in the notes if I reblogged something to that blog. Basically, no one knew the blog existed. And I remember sometimes I would see a cool post on my dash, or in tags, and it would be tagged as #dont reblog (this was before tumblr had the option to limit reblogs obviously). And if the post was cool (or edgy, because like I said… vent blog) and I was sad that I “couldn’t” reblog it, I’d reblog it to the side blog, where OP would never know 😭 Rebellious as hell wasn’t I?

That being said — and this might contradict everything I just wrote — I do think people that brag about not reading/not following DNIs are also a bit obnoxious. Not people who just make statements that they don’t read them, but people who make it known how much they hate their existence. It just seems kinda edgelord-y? Idk. Obviously it’s fine to not read them or like them but making it a huge statement is just like…ok? Congratulations? Should we throw you a party? Should we invite Elon Musk?

okay i was not expecting this for a lot of reasons but i'm intrigued now so i'll bite back.

i usually do these analyzations on my other blog actually, @analyzing-people-like-hell, and i usually ask for a few characters just to make sure i'm going on the right track, but i think i can work with just skimming through your posts.

i doubt it's all that accurate because of the lack of information, but it's somethin', so hopefully it's at least entertaining to some extent:

you definitely kin either L or Light. i'm leaning towards L more just because of what you seem like, but i feel like you'd at least semi-relate to Light to some extent, and both can give a lot of insight. for one, you're definitely not a people person. the thought of engaging with most of the frivolous activities you see people do not only bores you, but it might even disgust you as well. or maybe you just lack the social skills to deal with people so you tend to avoid them all together. either way, it does make people keen on viewing you as more of an asshole type. you probably are a bit of an asshole, but your nature ensures that you get the job done, so it's not like anybody can complain.

i don't know what your parents did but i can just smell the parental issues from you. for whatever reason, you find them inadequate and maybe even failures of guardians. it's hard to pinpoint why you'd feel that way, but my guesses are that they were probably just negligent in general. they probably didn't treat you with respect, or just didn't treat you with any care in general. i can imagine they get needlessly pissy with you a lot and blame/push their problems onto you. who knows, either way they don't seem very nice, and they're maybe even a lot worse than what i'm assuming.

despite not being much of a people person, you seem pretty emotionally-intelligent. you spend so much time with yourself that it's easy for you to control your emotions and stay pretty level-headed in situations that would normally fracture others. it gives you an advantage when getting to know people. you understand yourself enough to keep yourself safe, but it also helps you understand where other people might be coming from. there was also this one reblog i found when skimming through your posts: "when you want to be heartless but you know that's not how you are" that does make me question a lot of my initial guesses. maybe you just want to appear like somebody who couldn't care less about what people think, but deep down you still do. you want to give the world the same kind of pain it dealt you, but you just can't. despite all the rage festering inside you, you can't seem to stop caring. (which honestly fucking relatable i can't blame you there man.)

A what-if fic about what might happen if Light was given the Death Note as a baby and grew up with Ryuk. I remember kind of falling off of this fic, but not because it was bad. It's pretty funny, I like non-serial killer Light, and Ryuk shenanigans.

Olive Branch by Piper_Emerald

After Light confesses his guilt to L, L takes Light to the Whammy house to spend the rest of his life there as a teacher for the Whammy kids. This fic is strangely cathartic. The tone is grounded but pleasant, and I always enjoy fics about the Whammy kids.

Change OR the one where L and Light get married by avoidfilledwithcelluloid

L and Light return to L's childhood home and the Whammy house along with Watari and Light's family for their wedding.

I'm that one dumb person in the Death Note fandom who tries to make a happy ending out of this godforsaken story. It is for this reason that I really like Light redemption and atonement fics. And this one is my favorite out of all of them. L and Light feel both in-character and tragically, fatally human. This fic highlights how the main intrigue of their relationship is that no one knows the other person better than they do. They've both done awful, irredeemable things, things that only the other person can truly forgive them for. And at the end of the day, even if the world turns its back on them, they will still have each other.

How L Increases His Thinking Power By More Than 40% by WizardPartyForever

L and Light solve a case while they have sex. That's literally it. It's real short, but it's surprisingly cute? It feels very in-character for Light and L to be workaholics that make work part of their relationship.

A Tithe to Hell by Aja

After Light gets his memories back during the Yotsuba arc, he makes a plan to kill L that involves seducing him first. This is probably one of the most morally objectionable things I've ever read. It's kind of really fucked up, but at least it's in character and has a happy ending. Sort of. Mind the tags if you do decide to check it out, but if you're not the type of person to be bothered by morally questionable content, then this is probably your jam.

Change of Circumstances by wordbombs

A fic about L and Light growing up together in the Whammy house and slowly falling in love over the years. By God, I love this fic. It's so freaking cute and soft and cozy-feeling. Which are all words I never would've thought I'd use for a Death Note fic.

stares dead eyed at my 10 page doc of fic ideas. uhh ok i have No Idea what kinda plotline this would be, but i Desperately wanna write something with bunny near... perhaps also ft. a catboy mello. i don't have a goddamn clue what kind of au would produce that, but i need it. somehow. it has to be stupid and mello has to suffer lol 👍

14. where do you get your inspiration?

a whole amalgamation of things-- i latch onto different visuals/themes/motifs from the Various Medias i consume and the connections sneak their way through whether i'm conscious of it while writing or not. specific story ideas literally kinda come to me in Visions lol, or like i'll make a connection between two things and 🤯 (though admittedly usually i just write something if i think it's funny =3=")

e.g. praise the sweetness (my lawlight cult au) was heavily influenced by me playing cult of the lamb and going "i sure hope this doesn't awaken anything in me :]" over and over, but a lot of other stuff too-- originally that story was a lot more midsommar inspired, actually, before i changed the setting to wammy's house. which, once i did that, then all the post apocalypse shit started coming out of nowhere, which was quite literally influenced by my dreams cuz i dream about the apocalypse a lot :] but also like uhh the poppy thing i think came from sabrina the teenage witch lore bc iirc in the live action show witches are allergic to/can be killed by (??) poppies and that idea/imagery has always Stuck with me.

i take a lot of inspiration from the fucking massive number of fics i've read over the years too-- superegos for example was heavily influenced by all the weird robot sex fics i've read over the years (in particular a bts fic which i'm not even sure is on the internet anymore, it was taekook and called Neptune and fucking changed me fundamentally when i read it at like 13 LMFAO) and also weird robot movies which i watch a lot of for some reason (i've had to watch ex machina for like, 3 separate classes by this point...) though i actually like that it ended up going against a lot of the classic tropes with the memory transfer shit (clearly influenced by my homestuck/dirk strider roots. laughs). also the sex scene was Very Much influenced by this old ass dirkjake fic everybody on your knees and testify, specifically ch.4 which is. very good AHAHASHL :]
