i just finished reading the entirety of the hinterland doctrine.
there are rare occasions when a piece of media transcends itself to become something so much more, and i mean it with all sincereity when i say that, having spent exactly two months reading 710k words hours everyday, this series is no longer just a fic to me but something else entirely.
i cannot really explain how much of an impact it has had on me because frankly, i have tried and failed to coherently explain it well enough to do it justice. i began reading it with a curiosity about its premise as an alternative universe satire fanfiction series, and am now completely beside myself having finally finished it. it has been such a tumultuous journey, and now that i am done, i really don't know what to do with myself.
suffice to say, i will never have a healthy relationship with this song ever again.

This fic is amazing, I have a toxic relationship with it, and I won’t stop reading. Billion kudos to the author, halfpromise xx

I have to say no piece of media has manipulated my feelings as much as the fucking hinterland doctrine. I feel like I'm hanging onto a pendulum that keeps swinging and swinging. Sometimes it's nice, like I'm on a roller coaster, but other times I feel sick or like I'm gonna slip and fall or sometimes it's a mix of everything. I have never really experienced the horror/humor combo until now and it's just. Really unnerving and confusing and props to the author halfpromise jfc

Honestly I do think I could fill a TedTalk or idk a doctoral dissertation with my analysis of The Hinterland Doctrine but right now? I am going to go off about this line.
I think -- in an analogue of serialized fiction -- there is the authorial awareness that everyone really Lost It at the smoking monologue in chapter-fucking-one. So this line (which comes a good 700k words later) is working on multiple levels from the get. It's a nod to the portent that the monologue was, not only for the character, but for everyone reading. And I mean portent in both definitions, because, yeah, this is the Beginning of the End.
What I mean to say is that this is a joke, and also the turning point. It's innocuous, realistically, yet it punches you in the face because this is a character who doesn't acknowledge weakness as his defining hamartia. And then he says this, in dialogue, out loud.
And the response? B -- B! -- fucking standing there staring at him and then asking him to speak English because he doesn't understand what he's going on about. Perfection. There are no consequences except that everything has changed.
Can you imagine writing jokes with such weight, or an act 3 low point with such levity? It's staggering. I am staggered.
