I have to say no piece of media has manipulated my feelings as much as the fucking hinterland doctrine. I feel like I'm hanging onto a pendulum that keeps swinging and swinging. Sometimes it's nice, like I'm on a roller coaster, but other times I feel sick or like I'm gonna slip and fall or sometimes it's a mix of everything. I have never really experienced the horror/humor combo until now and it's just. Really unnerving and confusing and props to the author halfpromise jfc

Summary: An AU where Light ia politician and L is a very influential lawyer (*ahem* barrister) and they begin to have a casual relationship sharing secrets and using each other to their own advantage. Maybe they will fall in love but they are still the worst people you've ever met so there will be blood.
Author: @halfpromise
Note from submitter: Genuinely an amazing and completely captivating story. A classic in the dn fandom for a reason. It's so devastating while still being so incredibly funny. House of cards meets american psycho meets succession. Imo you don't even need to know death note to read it, and if you start you just won't be able to put it down. (also known as the hinterland doctrine)

listen i could write and be an actual fucking godly at it, but i will never be able to write something half as good as the hinterland doctrine (those who stand for nothing fall for nothing) and that's kind of. fucked up.

Honestly I do think I could fill a TedTalk or idk a doctoral dissertation with my analysis of The Hinterland Doctrine but right now? I am going to go off about this line.
I think -- in an analogue of serialized fiction -- there is the authorial awareness that everyone really Lost It at the smoking monologue in chapter-fucking-one. So this line (which comes a good 700k words later) is working on multiple levels from the get. It's a nod to the portent that the monologue was, not only for the character, but for everyone reading. And I mean portent in both definitions, because, yeah, this is the Beginning of the End.
What I mean to say is that this is a joke, and also the turning point. It's innocuous, realistically, yet it punches you in the face because this is a character who doesn't acknowledge weakness as his defining hamartia. And then he says this, in dialogue, out loud.
And the response? B -- B! -- fucking standing there staring at him and then asking him to speak English because he doesn't understand what he's going on about. Perfection. There are no consequences except that everything has changed.
Can you imagine writing jokes with such weight, or an act 3 low point with such levity? It's staggering. I am staggered.

I have read “The Hinterland doctrine”.
It took me a week of tears, nausea and depression.
Please, be aware, that something I say here might be a spoiler.
I don’t typically read anything Lawlight related, but this is a political AU, and characters are different from canon, so it got me interested.
I was stunned by the Author’s ability to unapologetically make characters make the worst choices (which are completely in character for them and make them…real people).
I don’t know if I could be that brave to navigate characters through relationships that will never going to work, unless they change, and they don’t want to. It hurts so much to read. I wished I could slap these two (Light and L) in their faces so they come to their senses and break up or start to work on themselves.
There is nothing healthy, and it feels like I was forced to watch the Ancient Rome burning. There is no blue sky, just roaring fire, smoke and destruction.
I must mention my special love to B, he was like a breath of fresh air whenever he appeared.
I really want to talk much about this fanfic. I don’t know if I should though. The characters have depth, and I must say I’ve even learned things about my own life while thinking about what I’ve read.
Just thank you, @halfpromise , for your dedication to this work. It’s brilliant.

He kisses the curve between my bottom lip and chin, but I raise my face out of his reach like he's something vile to me. He takes my jaw tightly in one hand, forcing me to look at him. His eyes are so angry. "There you are," I breathe out, and he kisses me with everything I never doubted that he felt for me, otherwise I wouldn't have chased it; I could have let him go but I knew it was there.
