How would narumi react if chaos couple girlfriends ex would show up?
narumi gen x f!reader
part of the Agents of Chaos series
Tumblr media
"Hey, who's that guy?"
Narumi hisses the question in your ear so suddenly that he can tell it takes you by surprise. You were in the middle of zoning out beside him and you probably assumed he was doing the same.
After all, the stuffy occasion that both you and the rest of the First Division have been forced to participate in – a tour of the Ariake Maritime Base by one of the higher-ups from within the Ministry of Defense – is the exact kind of thing that Narumi tries his hardest to avoid. Unfortunately, Hasegawa is holding both his BS5 and handheld console hostage, with his attendance and good behavior at this entirely pointless affair a condition of their safe return.
"What guy?" you reply, daring to slip your phone from your pocket only for him to snatch it and slide it into his pocket. He can't give Hasegawa any reason to harm his most beloved possessions.
"That guy who won't stop staring at you," he says, nodding at one of the official's aides whose eyes have been glued to you since the party arrived.
You frown in confusion before looking where directed. When you meet his gaze, the man's face turns bright red before he drops his head down and begins to flip through the folder in his hands.
"Oh, we used to fuck," you shrug.
"What?!" he shrieks and suddenly everyone's attention is on him.
Hasegawa quickly attempts to correct the situation, pointing out the base's freshly renovated training grounds in the distance while the three members of the Defense Force's PR team – who insisted on being there – seamlessly step in front of you and Narumi to hide you both from view.
"Calm down. I'm not still fucking him," you snort. Hasegawa's voice suddenly becomes louder as he describes the newly paved track.
You close your eyes and point your face up at the sky, relishing the sunshine on your skin. His gaze darts back and forth between you and your ex, who's returned to nervously looking at you. He glances at Narumi every so often, but never with any serious concern, which Narumi almost finds more offensive.
"Why'd you break up?" he asks as he examines the man from afar.
"He was boring," you tell him simply and there's an unexpected sense of relief that rushes through his body.
"Boring?" he repeats, a grin slowly tugging at the corner of his lips.
"Soooo boring," you nod and you tilt your head towards him, peeking open a mischievous eye with a smirk of your own that makes his heart flutter.
"I've got an idea."
One of the PR members glances back at him with deep worry on their poor face, but Narumi pays them no mind. He's too focused on how brightly your eyes are now shining.
He tosses an arm over your shoulders and moves out from behind the three-person PR wall. He can hear one of them muttering about how their careers are over, but it goes in one ear and out the other.
"Sir!" he shouts, interrupting Hasegawa who simply sighs and slaps a resigned palm to the top of his bald head, which is shining brilliantly under the sun. The official and his group of staffers, including your ex, look at him – and you still under his arm – as you both approach.
"We could keep going and show you the training grounds and the offices and the weapons storage, but what if we liven this tour up?" he suggests and he can instantly tell he's piqued the older man's interest. "Why don't we do a live neutralization exercise for you and your...assistants?"
The official's expression lights up with excitement at the prospect, but Narumi barely sees it. His focus is entirely on the uncomfortable-looking man standing slightly behind him.
"What a fantastic idea, Captain Narumi!" he easily agrees and Narumi smirks.
"I'll relay the command for the officers to prepare themselves," Hasegawa says, trying to restore a semblance of order, but he quickly shakes his head to stop his Vice-Captain.
"No need. As Japan's Strongest Anti-Kaiju Combatant and the Captain of the Defense Force's strongest division, I can solo the exercise," he assures them. His focus remains trained directly on your ex, who has long since dropped his gaze down to the ground. "Hasegawa, you can set them up in the best seat in the house – in the Operation Room right next to our Head of Operations here."
Your ex's head shoots up to look at Narumi with wide eyes, in clear disbelief that he would have to suffer through the display of Narumi's strength while sitting right next to you.
Hasegawa and the PR team members begin to corral the visitors away towards the Operation Room, but your ex seems rooted in place. In response, Narumi childishly sticks his tongue out to the sound of your laughter.

ALRIGHT, IT'S TIME!
THE SECOND RYUKI-AND-BLADE-ACCOMPANYING ANIME POLL IS NOW HERE!!!
SO, MEET YOUR CHALLENGERS!
AJIN Demi-Human
youtube
We start with a dark horror and possibly scifi about ethics in science, immortality, and an outlaw fugitive alien plot as a boy finds himself part of a group of immortals declared legally inhuman. While I have some misgivings about Oh No I Was Secretly A Creature All Along plots, I do fucking love horror and there’s a lot of ways for those plots to hit hard in the trans and gay and autism organs and be really important!!!!
Dimension W
youtube
The New Tesla Energy Corporation has monopolized the fourth dimension and the coils that connect to it. A duo of bounty hunters, one human and one robot, make money via repossessing illegal coils and seek out the answer to the mysteries within the dimension. I really wanna watch this one for a few reasons, the primary one of which is 'there are multiple fat women'. It seems to have freaks and weirdos and fun times, and its comedy is emphasized more than most of the other ones on this list so it might give some needed levity!
Kyoukai no Kanata
youtube
A bumbling monster hunter with blood powers meets an immortal via trying to shank him and ends up in an arrangement where she'll keep trying to kill him to boost her confidence while hunting monsters in what I hope is a monster-of-a-week show that came highly recommended by a friend as her favorite anime, or one of her favorites, so i have high hopes! Script's by the hibike euphonium guy and the power system seems quite interesting!
Air
youtube
A puppeteer (if he’s as good as Sakon will remain to be seen) stops his Road Trip To Meet A Golden Sun Jupiter Summon to stay for a bit in a town and, as happens to anyone who stops for too long, gets attached to the place and also meets a girl who might be said jupiteresque being. My friend informs me that it's gorgeous, sounds amazing (so I'll make sure to get clips), and has "nice sad vibes"!!! And it’s…listed in a “provincial horror” listing… hoho
Heike Monogatari
youtube
A child who can see ghosts and the future walks tirelessly through the tragedy of the war between the Taira and Minamoto families before the dawn of the first shogunate. It's wildly beloved by a friend of mine, and also centers a historical event i know some but not all about and definitely need to know more about the Taira side of. Seems like a beautiful drama, one I could lose my heart over.
SSSS Gridman
youtube
Digital kaiju! Digital hero! Digital amnesia! A monster of the week show about an unknown amnesiac summoning and merging with Hyper Agent Gridman to fight digital, possibly virtual monsters while making friends(?) in the real world! It's the one thing Tsubaraya Productions has that isn't Ultraman, and I expect some tokusatsu vibes from it along with the mecha stuff, i've also heard it has gay girl megatron??
Akudama Drive
youtube
It's a prison break and crime story set in a tech dystopia, starring a scene girl shoplifter, and featuring a bevvy of unpersoned convicts in what seems like an excellent ensemble clusterfuck!!! The Danganronpa crew made this thing! It's also beloved by a friend of mine, and I've heard it'll be a generally excellent tragedy of a time
Canaan
youtube
A reporter gets saved from assassins by a woman she might do yuri with, and the summaries I’ve found seem to imply a plot about terrorism and mystery! It’s a Type-Moon work that isn't part of the fate, tsukihime, OR melty universes! It might still have magecraft, but it's tagged sci-fi too, and a type moon take on scifi sounds interesting... it’s also based on. *checks wikipedia* a…perfect-Famitsu-score visual novel for the Nintendo Wii. So I might need to dig out some old hardware to watch this thing. For fun’s sake!
Killing Bites
youtube
A guy unintentionally becomes the underground wrestling promoter of a ?werewolf? Woman who murders his friends and wins him a shitload of money. The end goal? According to the summary, control of the economy!!! This was recommended as garbage and good lord I need garbage so much good god I need to put some trash inside of me.

dude i. the scene in maelstrom where newt finally caves and addresses the changes broke me
gotta applaud charlie day on this shit, because. oh my god.
shit was so emotional and so devastating, the way that his breath hitched a bit when he first noticed that little patches on his arm were changing color and you can see pure panic flash across his face for a split second but then he’s immediately back to his normal self?? top notch performance and that shit altered my brain chemistry
BUT HERES THE THING. i’m having so many emotions abt this scene because. OUGH.
newts been keeping this facade of just brushing all the weird changes off and chalking it up to “weird kaiju things” and up until this point in the movie, the viewer has no damn idea if he’s being genuine or not, because while it seems insane for a person to be reacting like this to their blood changing color, it’s newt, he’s already known for being a weird lil guy when it comes to kaiju things so you’re not actually sure if he’s not okay about it and hiding it really convincingly or if he’s just. genuinely fine with it for some reason
but now you can see that it is actually really freaking him out, from when he first stated to bleed blue to his eyes changing color and now to this, you can see that he’s actually scared of it, and it’s genuine terror that he lets himself feel for less than a single second but you can still see it
and his?? his rant??? his rant to hermann about how “no it’s all fine i’m fine its normal when you’re working with so much kaiju genetics and biomaterials it’s just my blood changing color and my eyes glowing and my skin literally fucking peeling off but no it’s alright, im fine, everything is fine”, and you can start to see that facade crack bit by bit as he gets more and more shaky and more and more unstable and goes into this frantic ramble about how he has to keep it together for hermanns sake because he already has too much on him and how he can’t let something as trivial as a kaiju mutation bother him (“what am i gonna do at this point, not mutate???”) and ends up in him in full breakdown mode, shaking, crying, screaming at nearly the top of his lungs how’s “it’s all fine but no, it’s not, it’s actually really scary and i don’t know what’s going on and i can’t explain it in any way and i’m scared that i’m gonna die, hermann, im gonna die without ever becoming a rockstar or-“ and he just collapses into hermanns arms, clinging to him for dear life (VERY SIMILAR TO HOW HE HELD ONTO HIM AFTER HIS FIRST DRIFT WITH THE KAIJU BRAIN) (cinematic parallels my beloved)
i just. sorry for the paragraph but OH MY GOD. that scene shook me to my core, as a newt enjoyer and fellow “guy who will say everything is fine until he has a breakdown”, that was a very powerful scene for me and probably my favorite in the whole movie
a standing ovation for charlie day

Just got back from Godzilla X Kong!
Tumblr media
First off, just a warning, there are some intense scenes of strobing lights and sound so be prepared if you have epilepsy. Likewise, it is a constant stream of loud sounds and colors with many fast cuts and no room to breath, which means my autistic ass got extremely overstimulated in the IMAX theater and had to cover my eyes and plug my ears at times to calm myself down, so be prepared for that too.
Now, on to my rambly and mildly spoilery first impressions under the cut.
Like I said, this movie has absolutely zero room to breathe. They sliced away every millisecond they could to keep the runtime below two hours and it translates into a film that just not shut up. It's like every scene lasts 30 seconds, even the kaiju battles are so quickly cut that it feels like this gif:
Tumblr media
That being said, the actual story when you think about it, before the searing stream of action melts your brain, is very good. It's about how your home is your family, and that's paralleled in both Kong's story and the human story. Jia and her mom are the heart of the film and they've easily become some of my favorite human characters in the Monsterverse.
I'm not sure how to articulate my thoughts the best, so I guess I'll just talk about each of the kaiju and how I felt about them.
Despite getting top billing, Godzilla just straight up does not matter in this movie. It's %100 Kong's story, Godzilla really only matters at the end when he joins up for the big finale fight and even then it kind of feels like Kong had this all handled. In fact, don't kill me, but Godzilla being here just makes the movie worse. Time given to Godzilla takes away time from Kong's story, which as I said feels really rushed. If anything Goji is a fucking asshole, he goes around slaughtering Titans that're just minding their business. What happened to balancing nature? You're going to kill some kaiju peacefully sleeping in the arctic because you want to glow pink now? BTW the power up is completely pointless, he doesn't even seem to do it for any good reason he just felt like a make over I guess.
Kong on the other hand was great, literally just the main character of the movie, he's the one with the most growth and who goes through a character arc. There are some wonderful scenes far away from any humans of just him doing his own thing, having his own adventure. I'm not sure I've ever seen a kaiju movie do that besides, funny enough, the much maligned Son of Godzilla. Kong finds his people, liberates them from a cruel tyrant, and proves himself king of the apes. The scenes of him and Suko bonding are especially strong in my opinion, showing Kong as an ultimately very kind and patient beast with a big heart that he desperately wants to share even with someone who hurt him. By this point, Kong is the most developed kaiju in the series, I love him.
Mothra is in the movie. Yeah, that's about it. Her presence doesn't actually make much sense, the whole "only an Iwi from Skull Island can summon her" meanwhile she just popped out of the ground herself a few years ago to fight Ghidorah. Likewise I was disappointed that she didn't really do anything, she doesn't even have a moment with Godzilla. I thought they were all symbiotically linked and whatnot? Why didn't she join the fight in Rio? Yeah, how about this, cut Godzilla from the movie and have her be the big help at the end. The story spends so much time on summoning her, about as much time as Godzilla goes stomping around, why not have her be the support for the big battle at the end? Also she's straight up magic now, materializing out of thin air, sure. Why not?
Skar King was a fun villain, I can definitely see him becoming a fan favorite. You can kind of tell with the fandom that nobody really cares about the MUTOs or the Mamma Skullcrawler despite being in some of the most beloved Monsterverse films, and that's because they're mostly treated as animals. Ghidorah was the first one really personified and for that he was a wonderful villain that the fandom could latch on to, and Skar King has a lot of moments where his personality shines. Likewise Shimo was great too, a sort of tragic mix of a war mount and a kicked puppy. I'm excited to see how the fandom reacts to her, most of the pre-movie art I've seen makes her out to be this omega asshole but in the film she's arguably nicer that Godzilla.
Yeah, having an hour and a half to calm down, I can say I had a lot of problems with the film. Likewise though, there was also a lot to love. I think I may try to watch it again, on a standard screening next time, to form some more solid thoughts. For now though, I can hope that this movie does well, because even if I'm not the biggest fan I still want to see the Monsterverse continue.

Baby. Sweety. Darling. My beloved. You already fought Vyse once before, and that was when he was captaining a dinky little fishing boat. What POSSIBLE hope do you think you have NOW?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
tfw Goku finally shows up on the battlefield lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this is how it works for Mt Fuji in real life too, right? There's a kaiju laying dormant inside of it? I'm pretty sure I was told that by a tour guide once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Valuans:"CURSE YOUR SUDDEN BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL!"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow this Angel is really fucking them up lol. It's funny how this game manages to do an effective job of making Valua seem like a legitimate intimidating threat, while also being constantly thwarted and getting jobbed by the Vyse and the gigas. Star Wars always struggles with this kind of thing for example.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's hard to have an evil empire that you can take seriously but also needs to constantly lose to the heroes.
Tumblr media
Really just fucking gave up on the name for this one huh? In japanese the name is a portmanteau of Blue, Dragon, and Phoenix.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know WHY you think that's possible considering how the last two times this went, but you do you I guess.

Can I still send a pacific rim au prompt?
How about seb and Michael used to pilot together but they had an accident like in the movie.
And now mick is new in the Jaeger program and desperately wants to pilot with seb and see if they’re drift compatible (obviously they are) but seb doesn’t want to cause he doesn’t want mick to get hurt etc. but he doesn’t tell mick that (cause communication issues and guilt)…
Anon my beloved. Anon, this is literally everything I want to write in my next Pacific Rim AU never mind that I had 5 different Pacific Rim AUs already planned. Thank you for this prompt, please let me stew on it and hopefully turn it into an actual story, but here're some thoughts below the cut! Much thanks to @kritischetheologie for sharing her big brain energy on this! It's basically a Pacific Rim AU of our ABO AU. Haha.
Seb thinks he won't ever pilot again after the accident. His heart is so broken, his mind so fractured from when the Kaiju ripped their neural connection in two. He blames himself for not being strong enough. If he could have just been faster, stronger, maybe he could've pulled their Jaeger out of the way.
But the Pan Pacific Defense Corps needs pilots, now more than ever, and Seb's too valuable for them to let go. He's too experienced, too good at what he does. If he can't go back into a suit, at least he can train the recruits.
And then who should he meet, but fucking Mick Schumacher, new to the Jaeger Program.
It nearly makes Seb quit on instinct. God. He should be protecting Michael's kid, not training him to face the very thing that tore Michael away from them. Mark stops him from leaving, says, D'you think you leaving will save them? D'you think you'd serve better use hiding, than teaching these people what you know? Things that might save them? And Seb stays of course, because if there's one thing he can't stand it's the idea that anyone else will go through what he did.
And in the simulator, it's clear as day he's fucking drift compatible with Mick. Like, even more so than he was with Michael. Seb's in a spiral about it. Because, what the fuck is the universe trying to tell him? How is he so closely tied to the both of them in such a way? He's not strong enough to protect Mick, not in his current state. He can't be the downfall of both of them; he'd never forgive himself. Never.
So he refuses to even consider piloting with Mick. Even though all the superiors are like, the two of you could literally step into a suit the next day and make it work. And Mick's, god, Mick's fucking hurt. He doesn't understand why Seb won't even look him in the eye. He's grown to respect Seb so much after all the training. He sees the way Seb spends time with the recruits despite how much pain he seems to battle with. Seb's the kindest, gentlest, strongest soul he's come across. He never once blamed Seb for the accident. But why won't Seb pilot with him?
It comes to a head during a sparring session. Mick throws himself against Seb in a hurt kind of rage. Like, Why don't you trust me? Do you think I won't measure up to my father?
And it's possibly the most cruel blow Seb could have taken, because in all of this the only thing he's been trying to do is to keep Mick safe. He shuts down, doesn't defend. And maybe Mick - accidentally hurts Seb in this match?
And it's awful and they're both in so much pain and the truth comes tumbling out of Seb as he's shaking, partway to tears, and Mick is literally on his knees begging for forgiveness like, I didn't know, I didn't know Seb I'm so sorry--
Yeah that's what I have so far. Head in my hands, as I always say.

How would the Godzilla monsters react to their s/o having a heat during mating season and how do they help them
So we're going to assume one of two things: 1] either the s/o is as big as their beloved, or 2] their beloved is as small as the humans.
We all know what's under the cut:
Tumblr media
Ghidorah loves it when you go into heat. He has the highest sex drive out of all the kaiju, so when you come to him, just aching for him to fuck for days on end, in any and all positions, he's there for you. Forwards, backwards, upside down. It's almost whatever you want baby. All the while he's crooning and growling and going on, making sure you understand how lucky he is that he puts up with your heat.
Tumblr media
Another Kaiju with a high sex drive, it's Godzilla that mainly comes to you when he needs his proverbial itch scratched. So when your heat comes rolling around, he makes sure to be a little dickish about it and make you come to him. Who can blame him though? He likes to feel wanted every now and then. Godzilla will give you everything you need, even thinking of things you didn't know you needed. All the while making sure he gives you wave after wave of pleasure. After all, what is he if not a giver?
Tumblr media
The one with the lowest sex drive on the list, Mothra is quite shocked to find out that you have heat cycle. She's more than willing to help out, though her touch may be a tad bit more gentle than you're wanting. Even so, if you need her to get rough with you, she will, but the she take the tenderest of care for you afterwards. It is in her nature after all.
Tumblr media
Rodan is the most excited to learn that you have a heat cycle. While you guys adhere to a regular sexy time schedule, he uses these moments to get extra experimental. Nearly nothing is off limits for him at this time, and hey, if you manage to wrestle him for it, he'll let you be on top.

Hey sorry but you rbd something about a Pacific rim fic called designations congruent with things a while ago, what is that? Would you recommend it?
oh man, would i. cleanwhiteroom's Designations Congruent With Things is my all-time favorite fanfiction and one of a handful of comfort-stories that i re-read/-consume when i need a pick-me-up. that doesn't make it Perfect, and its ending is not happily-ever-after so much as well-we've-been-terribly-mistreated-and-traumatized-BUT-we-have-each-other-and-the-world-isn't-ending-and-we-have-HOPE, but MAN do i go in for that kind of thing.
that said, it's not for everybody. it's pretty verbose-- the first time i read it i had to stop every paragraph or so to process what i'd actually just read, but every so often i enjoy feeling like i'm in college again and this hits the spot. it deals with rough subjects including governmental overreach, non-consensual medical procedures, and fractured identity, but it handles it very thoughtfully and honestly. the first ten chapters are all pretty much set-up, and then the remaining 19 or so chapters circle around what we do in the aftermath of a decades-long war and the interpersonal issues that crop up between Newt and Hermann.
idk! if you like the PacRim scientists, if you like people reacting to trauma/PTSD and finding each other through it, if you like slow-burn relationships that have all of the commitment before any of the romance, if you like a pair of brilliant idiots in some painful-ironic-hilarious shenanigans, i might say it's worth a read. it's no longer on AO3 but you can find it on the writer's website HERE, as well as a link to a podfic of the first few chapters.
plus, after some 5-6 years cleanwhiteroom dropped a sequel (also available at the above link) that offers more hope, more of the reality of long-term PTSD and health issues, more Hermann-Newt heartfelt hijinx, and a lovely scene about the kaiju that had me SCREAMING (very quietly, bc i don't want my neighbors to call the cops, but also consistently through the whole thing and for a while afterwards bc it was almost exactly what i wanted, eeeee).
the content warnings aren't so robust at first, so i'll elaborate some under the cut (though it will contain spoilers, sorry!)
so it takes place after the first Pacific Rim film but touches on its events, meaning we deal with Newt's experiences with drifting with an alien hivemind, Hermann finding his long-term lab partner seizing, Otachi coming after Newt in the bunker, and the immediate aftermath of the deaths of many of our beloved characters. the first ten chapters deal with these, after which there's a HUGE overreach by the PPDC: they want to make sure that Newt and the still-alive pieces of kaiju brain on Earth aren't still in contact with the Anteverse, so they hook him up to these pieces that KNOW that newt separated him from them, that know he CUT THEM UP in the first place, that want him dead and suffering but are also so lonely and want him to be a part of them... BUT Hermann gets him out and to safety, Newt's health is extremely poor, and they have a lot of mutual identity issues, PTSD, panic attacks, nosebleeds, epileptic seizures, awkward workplace and stranger interactions, minor body modifications, inability to look at oneself in the mirror, and. idk. anxiety about the government coming back to take you again? anxiety about the kaiju coming back? anxiety about what the future looks like, with their pasts, and bitterness that they had to suffer so terribly not just for the good of humanity, but also for some government official to check off a box that says Newton Geiszler Isn't a Threat to Humanity.
big on identity issues, big on part of your brain wanting to Kill You but also being obsessed with you and sort of, in a twisted way, loving you? big on PTSD and trying to care for a fucked up person who isn't caring for themself so well.
yea. yea! idk. it helps me to know the specifics of potentially-triggering things before i read them; if there's something particular you'd like to know about, shoot me an ask and i'll try to help. hopefully i haven't forgotten anything major but also my brain is a sieve.

AAAAA SAME ANON AND I LOVE UR THOUGHTS ON THIS AU SO MUCH!!!! hskdhdkdbd PLEASE ignore this if u don’t want to talk about this au of course, but honestly i only have more !!!!! about it with every piece of info. like the line about fabian and riz’s jaeger being “unstoppable. almost.” and about how adaine joins the fray specifically bc they’re down and adaine and aelwyn are the only ppl who can fill in their place right now. also how kristen is drift compatible with everyone im!!
NO NO NO IM SO HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT IT!!!! like pacific rim really blessed us by not only being an AMAZING movie but also the best au fodder of all time??? god pacific rim au my beloved <3
some additional stuff because i cant stop:
i think ayda and adaine are totally drift compatible, but never tested together, as ayda only joined the program to pilot with fig
penelope, dayne, and ragh actually triple piloted until fig signed up. everyone thought it was better to separate penelope and dayne because they were ... not always team players when together. but after it came out everything that had been happening between dayne and ragh, that decision was heavily regretted. ragh got ... a lot of counseling after dayne was kicked out. when he was moved to combat trainer, he got a lot happier and became good friends with tracker, who'd been on base long enough to see everything go down
ayda and aelwyn actually knew each other in undergrad. aelwyn became friends with her mostly for strategic purposes, because she was the daughter of the head of the jaeger program and aelwyn wanted to build jaegers. ayda became friends with her because they were both the youngest in the STEM program and she was desperate for someone she could relate to, at least a little. they got along okay but didn't really keep in touch after graduation. they didn't start getting closer until aelwyn became a pilot, because then they COULD actually relate to each other, as scientists-turned-fighters
ayda still found out she was autistic through jawbone, once she finished school and came to base to study kaiju. she opened up to him about how hard it was to relate to her peers, and he was like kiddo youre probably autistic?? like over half of the scientists here are?? and she was like. OH. after everythings over and fig goes back to being a musician, she donates a lot of her touring profits to autistic-led advocacy groups because like. she's literally felt what it's like to live with an autistic brain, and it makes her the biggest ally of all time (and ayda being a very prominent autistic scientist AND pilot actually does like. SO MUCH for autism acceptance. she frequently gives lectures on fig's touring routes)
after they close the breach, fabian gets into a huge blowout fight with bill. cause bill makes his money by selling kaiju parts, so without the kaiju, he doesn't have a job. and by that point fabian has had enough distance and experience that he's like. i would have died for you but i fucking made a name for myself that was better than anything you've ever tried to do, now i get to live for me. and even though he wasn't expecting it, bill actually completely accepts and supports that
yeah so pok actually died cause he got eaten by a kaiju after drifting with one using the pons system he invented. its extremely difficult to hear but riz is also like. that is the most badass thing ive ever fucking heard oh my god (they name the neuroscience program at riz's college after pok. sklonda starts law school there the year after they close the breach)
kristen literally proposes to tracker the day after they close it, barely conscious, with a giant hole in her chest, from her hospital bed. everyone is like. my dude. tracker thinks its extremely romantic
(they end up adopting a bunch of kids who were orphaned because of kaiju attacks)
gorgug goes to college and becomes a high school social studies teacher. zelda runs a local gym. they have an extremely quiet life and are happy to, most of the time, not be noticed or bothered. every once in a while an extremely nerdy kid will recognize gorgug's PARENTS as jaeger mechanics and completely ignore gorgug and zelda thinks its hilarious
after they close the breach, the abernant parents reach out to BOTH aelwyn and adaine to ask them to come back home to visit and be celebrated. and theyre like. mmmm fuck that actually?? but adaine does have a BIT of an existential crisis cause shes like OKAY WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO WITH MY LIFE NOW?? they actually end up getting a little apartment together somewhere and aelwyn pays the bills as an engineer making advanced prosthetics. she encourages adaine to just try out as much as possible, and she takes a ton of classes at the community college, the community center, and at various local businesses. but its actually jawbone who inspires her to go back for another degree and become a psych researcher. she makes waves in the trauma and ptsd field
theyre all pretty happy that kalvaxis, category iv, and nightmare, category v, got blown to hell at the bottom of the ocean

ok now im curious!! what content with lgbt characters (preferably primary characters) would you recommend?
thanks for asking!! I have been preparing for this moment 🙏🏻 SORRY THAT THIS GOT KIND OF LONG! so I put it under a read more
first are my trio of webcomics I keep up with no matter what
Alice and the Nightmare - I just gave it a shout out but it's a cool fantasy world about Alice, a fat bi girl!, going to college after living with the queen for years and not having many friends, but it seems like something about Alice isn't quite 'normal'. Cast is very diverse and fun!
Sleepless Domain - gay magical girls!! they protect a city from nightly monster attacks and soon a mysterious monster causes a lot of trouble for our main characters. Undine is black and wlw and she is such a good character I love her so much
Namesake - a portal fantasy about going to stories of classics like Wizard of Oz but the Emma... shouldn't be there based off of how the 'portals' work. Evolves into some of the best world building and settings I've ever read. Emma isn't lgbt+ but a lot of the main and supporting cast are! My icon is one of my favorite characters <3
Podcasts my beloved media type that I never get around to despite loving
The Magnus Archives - a podcast that is literally no questions asked my favorite piece of horror media I've ever engaged in. It's horror is amazing, it's slow world building is the perfect amount of questions and answers, and it's characters are SO interesting. Also has trigger warnings for every episode on the wiki/on the episode descriptions for if you like horror but can't stand a certain type of scare!
Welcome to Nightvale - listen to me. listen to me. nightvale has always been good. it's weird and funny and small fucked up little town where cosmic horrors are just normal every day things is a FUN trope and it's worth checking out if you never were into it back in the day
shows and cartoons and yeah <3
The Haunting of Bly Manor - I am once again talking about horror media. Anyways they labeled this as gothic romance and I was instantly hooked! It's a heartbreaking sort of story about ghosts and memories and the main character is a lesbian who is working at a creepy old manor to take care of the kids who live there and if you like horror...!! (The Haunting of Hill House is also good & worth checking out!)
Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts - this cartoon feels super underrated despite having a black gay boy get to say he's gay out loud. it's a post apocalypse setting where humanity has kind of hidden themselves away from the huge kaiju mutated animals and the talking animal groups but our protag Kipo is going to go through the world and solve it's mysteries and help everyone heal through kindness and song. it's really fun and 100% worth checking out if you are the type to enjoy kids cartoons!
i would also give a shout out to some comics & graphic novels I love but this is getting really long so for now I'll just shout out one I really liked
Saga - lol okay Saga has been on hiatus for... a long time now and it's on an awful cliffhanger so just a heads up if you check it out. ALSO!! This is an 18+ piece of media if you are a minor please wait to check it out. it will probably still be on hiatus by the time you're old enough lmao. It's a space opera scifi story about a couple who were on different sides of a looong war but they're together despite that and also pregnant and holy shit they're having a baby right here in chapter 1. it's the story of their kid growing up and the struggles of the parents to keep them safe. Also heads up if you're not big on character deaths maybe don't read this, it gets sort of games of thrones-y to keep the cast cycling out
i know my summaries def got worse as this list went on but this was like. starter pack to my favorite media with lgbtq+ characters and they are all equally worth checking out if they sounded interesting to you!! There's a lot more, especially webcomics and comics, I would love to talk about someday too

*
Fic: I Don’t Have Any Roses But I Have A Rabbit? by Teaandtumblr

*
Fic: Starshine by Blueslove
Length: 1.3k

It’s as if his being lives to praise the pages, like his lips don’t know how to form any other words. He speaks of the characters like they’re friends, the story as if he’d lived it himself, and the place like he’d seen it with his own eyes.

Length: 4.2k

It was not particularly pretty, nor particularly deep. It was not even that magical. But it was, at the very least, old—and all folk knew that with time came the strangest of truths, best left unbelieved or unseen altogether.
Izuku was one of these truths.
Or, Izuku can grant wishes, Katsuki is a mortal who doesn't know any better, and even the most innocent things always come with a price.
*
Fic: Beyond the Veil by Seeress
Length: 11.9k (multichap, complete)
Summary: A locked door. A ghostly presence. A long forgotten name.
Katsuki goes back to his grandparent's old house and finds a presence he barely remembers, still waiting for him.
His grandmother’s stories all had the same cautionary theme: Do not stray off the path. Keep your hands to yourself. Be polite to those you meet. Be wary of undeserved generosity. Do not be deceived by masks. Remember your way home.
But Katsuki was a child of skyscrapers and 24 hour convenience stores. He walked on streets lined with man-made lights that turned on before the sun goes down the horizon and never went out until the sun rises again. He lived in a house full of noise, in a city full of living, breathing people.
He had never known true darkness; nights when even the moon sheds no light and the world is silent, but you know deep within your bones that you are not alone.
*
Fic: Nowhere I’d Rather Be by Dat_heichou
Length: 1.8k
Summary: It’s 3 a.m. on the coldest sunday of the year and Izuku is too excited to feel tired. It’s release day of the newest All Might figure and he made sure he woke up early enough to buy one.
It’s freezing and dark and Izuku is sore from the rigorous training that U.A. third years go through, but he still excitedly shifts from one foot to the other. There’s nowhere he’d rather be.
“It’s cold as fuck out here,” Katsuki gripes beside him, burrowing his nose deeper into the collar of his thick, thermal lined jacket.
*
Fic: solar by Kindaopps
Length: 7k
Summary: Here he is, a god, wanting a mortal.
*
Fic: Sunlight Moving by Peredhils
Length: 3.8k
Summary: The night air was cool but not as damp and depressing as it had been when leaving England. The sea breeze was refreshing and it was crisper than it smelled standing from the shore. Although the rocking of the boat made him a bit nauseous, coupled with the unease that came with being unable to see any land on the horizon, Katsuki liked it more than he thought he would. Standing at the ledge and looking up at the stars, all so bright and clear, was easing the day’s troubles.
He wasn’t alone for long.
Katsuki, a duke organizing the creation of a new university in England, meets astronomer Izuku on board a voyage overseas.
*
Fic: let me hurt you, until we don’t by DeKatsu
Length: 3.3k
Summary: Deku decides that using his quirk with his hero license suspended is a smart idea. Katsuki doesn't understand why he's thrown into the holding cell as Deku's accomplice.
And then they talk about feelings.
Which isn't even the weirdest shit, considering that their cell mates end up giving them the push they need.
*
Fic: last days of war by antisora
Length: 38k (multi-chap, WIP)
Summary: When the first Kaiju climbed through the portal to their world, Izuku and Katsuki were six years old. And from the tender age of six, they knew they were going to be rangers.
All Izuku wanted, all he ever wanted, was to save the world alongside his best friend.

Say I wanna get into the Godzilla franchise. Do you know what movies I should watch?
Excellent.
First off, you watch the 1954 Gojira. yes it’s old as hell, but it’s still a good watch! Also, almost every single new continuity uses the original movie as its starting point so it’ll make hopping to new continuities much easier.
After that, where you go is up to you. The Godzilla movies vary wildly in quality from movie to movie, while the 4 eras (Showa, Heisei, Millenium, and Reiwa) tend to greatly differ in tone.
The Showa movies were more kids-fare stuff, where Godzilla was often a heroic character fighting aliens, or a big bad that a good monster like King Kong had to knock out. There was plenty of team-ups, tons of goofy moments and superpowers, and featured the debut of Godzilla’s most iconic kaiju. Note that Godzilla’s famous co-stars Mothra and Rodan appeared in their own movies first before joining Godzilla.   Must Watches: Gojira (duh),  Mothra vs Godzilla, Terror of Mechagodzilla (Mechagodzilla actually debuted first in equally iconic Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, but that was really aimed at kids so you can skip ahead to this one if that’s not your thing,) Ghidorah the Three-headed Monster
Also known as the “Vs” movies, the Heisei era featured Godzilla facing off against either new takes on old enemies, or brand new kaiju villains entirely. Make no mistake though—no longer was he a children’s hero, but a massively powerful force of nature that people fear and yet must rely on as their only hope.  Must Watches: Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs Biollante, Godzilla vs Destoroyah (this one is arguably the best Godzilla movie ever made)
The short-lived Millenium era was... fuck it. Just skip Godzilla vs Megaguirus but watch everything else. This era had the beloved Kiryu saga which was fucking amazing, GMK, which was fucking amazing, and the biggest, clowniest, The Matrix ripoffiest movie ever in Godzilla: Final Wars, which was fucking amazing. If you ever wanted to see Godzilla curbstomp almost his entire rogues gallery in a single movie to end in a climactic battle where Ghidorah smashes into him from space saying “Happy 50th anniversary, fuckface” in skreeonk, you go here.
As for the ongoing Reiwa era... Don’t even bother with Urobochi’s movies. Just watch Anno’s Shin Godzilla and you’re good! Hopefully the new series they announced last year will be better.
I was also a very big fan of the Legendary Pictures Godzilla movies. Both Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla: King of the Monsters were really fun and I highly recommend them!

My Gigan’s Backstory
Gigan hardly knew his real parents. He still has memories of them, vague memories deep in his data banks. He knew enough to have imprinted on his own kind; he knows he’s a space-duck.
His Masters, the Nebulans, has taken him from his nest before he was even old enough to leave it. They took him in, fed him, raised him. They took lots of pictures of him, in all his babu floof glory, and made sure to save those photos for future use...
Gigan as a babu was damn near the cutest thing in existence, a cottonball with a face. He would instinctively seek cuddles for warmth and would waddle after anyone he laid eye on, chirping and peeping the entire time. He quickly won the hearts of every Nebulan that came in contact with him, and a great bond was formed between him and his adoptive ‘family’.
But good things don’t last long in my universe and when Gigan began approaching pubescence, he became increasingly more aggressive and violent. Tis a normal part of space-duck development, as the young start to learn how to hunt and fight amongst themselves.
For Gigan, though, this natural change would become anything BUT natural. His Masters not only placed him in complete isolation in a ready-made enclosure, but also placed a ‘mind-control’ chip in his brain. A weak one, just there to ensure he doesn’t turn that aggression towards them. They deprived him of physical company, but still spoke to him through the chip. Although obviously, the conversations were rather sparse and one-sided. Most of Gigan’s days were spent sleeping or restlessly pacing around the enclosure. His only source of entertainment was when the Nebulans would teach him how to ‘hunt’. Aka, to attack anything that went through The Door.
The Door was Gigan’s only contact with the outside world beyond his enclosure. The Nebulans would give him whatever he needed through The Door. Food, toys, or (his favorite) live prey to serve as both. He lived like this for many years, until he was a fully-grown adult. Then the Nebulans, his ‘parents’ that he came to look up to, told him that it was time for the Change. He didn’t know what this entailed, but he was excited and ready for this Initiation!
He was put under, and the modifications were made to his body, his senses, his brain. They took his natural weaponry and made them even more deadly by coating them in powerful alien alloys. They gave him power, in the form of lasers, fire, flight, teleportation, and a buzzsaw implanted into his chest. They gave him knowledge in his brain, able to access whatever information he could possibly desire (that they already had on record, of course). And most importantly....
... They downloaded his baby pictures into his memory bank. Just to humble him a bit, remind him of how cute he was.
Gigan was quite overwhelmed at first. His body stayed mostly the same in appearance, but the changes made took some getting used to. After giving him recovery time in his room, this overwhelmed feeling only increased as they FINALLY began letting Gigan out of his enclosure to practice in a training room.
This overwhelmed feeling quickly went out the window when he learned he was going to fly for the first time. He also began learning how to control his powers, and he took to the lessons pretty well. So many new ways to kill his prey, it’s great! He loved every moment of it!
Once he mastered his skills, he was finally allowed to venture into the real world to carry out missions. Much death and destruction was waged at his claws, all in the name of ‘peace’ as the Nebulans called it, and he loved every moment of it. After being confined to his room damn near his entire childhood, it was like he was able to release all that pent-up aggression on something other than his prey. And once it was all over, and his mission was a success, he would retire back in his enclosure and rest. Despite having been a prisoner in there for the longest time, he still took comfort in his nest.
He was content living with his Masters for a while; he had food and shelter, and a purpose in carrying out whatever missions the Nebulans sent him on.
But as time went on, he began to find that he wanted something more. He didn't know what he was missing, but something was wrong. There was a need in him, ever since he grew to adulthood, that he couldn't fulfill. It got so bad that just the sight of anything colored gold got him bothered and only agitated his aggression further.
Taking note of Gigan's increasing frustrations and unhappiness, the Nebulans came to the conclusion that he must have a mate. He deserved it and they pulled strings to obtain the finest specimen they could find, only the best for their pet space-duck! Importing the specimen, they let her into his room using The Door, and for the first time since being taken from his parents, Gigan saw another of his own kind. The Nebulans had their hopes up, for the interaction seemed peaceful as the two curiously met. All Gigan had to do was fluff out his feathers, fan his sails, and strut his stuff!
But that never happened. For this bioweapon did not court her and instead tried to force himself on her. It’s typical behavior for male space-ducks without a mate, but to not even try courtship? What's worse, when the female rejected his advances (who did this cyborg asshole think he is?!), Gigan only got increasingly more violent and with his enhanced strength and weaponry, it got real bloody really fast.
So fast, the Nebulans couldn’t even stop it from happening when Gigan killed his potential mate. It was horrified silence from the roaches, as their beloved pet finally found release on the corpse. He continued this until he tired himself out and turned to cannibalizing the remains.
Now that... was not normal.
But maybe the Nebulans did something wrong? Perhaps using The Door triggered Gigan to view her as a toy, as live prey? They tried again, and again, with different locations but with the same results. If anything, Gigan only learned how to keep his toy alive for longer. Kept in isolation most of his life, and trained to choose violence at every opportunity, Gigan had no real social skills among his own kind. His instincts to court and breed like a normal space-duck was severely stunted and the Nebulan’s repeated efforts only really reinforced in Gigan’s psychopathic mind that other creatures existed for his own personal pleasures.
They did come to accept that trying to breed their prized weapon was a lost cause. If anything, they’ll reward him with an opportunity to mate if he does a good job at his missions. Whatever makes him happy.
This arrangement made him very happy, and for a while, he thought he needed nothing more in life.
But one day, was the day something new awakened within Gigan.
It was an unusual mission; the Nebulans wanted him to help them capture a target, alive and unharmed. Their target was another bioweapon, just like him, created by a long-extinct race and flying around the cosmos destroying worlds. That kind of power could be useful, and best of all: it came with a mind-control chip of its own.
His name was Ghidorah. King Ghidorah.
The pictures did not do this dragon justice, as Gigan and the Nebulans tracked down the mind-control chip’s signature, and found the massive asteroid. From it, emerged the three-headed dragon. The GOLDEN three-headed dragon with MASSIVE sails that caught the light beautifully.
Setting his eye on the creature woke something in Gigan, for the very first time. He... He WANTED this creature, all to himself. Alive. And he can have him, once they brought this creature into Nebulan control. That was all the motivation he needed.
The battle was a dangerous one. The dragon’s intentions to kill were obvious, and for once in his life, Gigan had to hold back. He had one goal in mind, to incapacitate the dragon and bring him into Nebulan captivity. A swift and powerful strike to the middle head was all that was needed to finish the job.
The Nebulans went right to work with that mind-control chip. Gigan wanted something else, but was forced to sit out while the dragon was prepared. And when they finally did meet, the dragon spoke not a word to him. He just needed time to adjust, the Nebulans reassured the cyborg. They’ll be spending plenty of time together once their plan was ready to set in motion.
Their first mission was to Earth, to dispose of a creature called Godzilla. Ghidorah apparently already had run-ins on this planet, but was swiftly outnumbered. But now with Gigan at his side, surely the odds will lean in their favor.
And it very well nearly did. Together, Gigan, Ghidorah, and the Nebulans almost killed Godzilla.
Until...
Something went terribly wrong. All of a sudden, Gigan lost contact with the Nebulans, for the very first time. The mind-control chips in both kaiju was de-activated, and Gigan was left on his own. Unfortunately for Godzilla, Gigan was no innocent victim under the control of malicious aliens. Mind-control or not, he functioned largely of his own accord and he quickly resumed torturing the fuck out of Godzilla.
Even dragging him to Ghidorah’s feet like a proud suitor showing off prey.
Which Ghidorah promptly rejected and punted the fat Earth lizard away...
That’s okay, it was funny watching Godzilla fly anyway.
However, it quickly became obvious that Ghidorah was no team player and had a great disdain for Gigan. He made little effort to involve himself in the fight, beyond warding off Anguirus’s advances. This hatred even seemed to outweigh his beef with Godzilla as Ghidorah ignored his Earth-side enemy to argue against Gigan. Such vitriol from the dragon for what was an accidental collision- Wait, this wasn’t about Gigan accidentally flying into him. No, Ghidorah was blaming HIM for this whole entire mess?! THE FUCK!!
This argument costed them the mission, Gigan attempting and failing twice to retreat back to the Nebulan ship. Only when Ghidorah was allowed to retreat did Godzilla finally let the cyborg flee alongside him.
It was a bitter blow to Gigan’s ego; not only was his attempt to impress such a beautiful mate a complete failure, but he never lost a mission so miserably. But things go from bad to worse, when Ghidorah followed him back to the ship and to his horror, proceeded to destroy it. Revenge for keeping him hostage.
It was at that moment Gigan had to choose, between his Masters, who were essentially his parents, or this beautiful dragon that he wanted so badly but whom didn’t seem to return the favor...
He chose his Masters and, despite being injured, he rushed to defend the ship with everything he’s got. Ghidorah seemed reluctant to engage in teeth-to-claw close combat, and when the hydra saw that it would take more than Gravity Beams to keep this cyborg at bay, it was what allowed Gigan to chase him off. The Nebulans were safe...
... For now.
For it was barely over a year later, after yet another failed Earth mission with an ally named Megalon, that Gigan returned to his Masters even more damaged than last time. And that’s when Ghidorah, lying in wait for the perfect opportunity, decided to strike.
The Nebulans were defenseless and a weakened Gigan could do nothing but watch as his Masters were destroyed. His home... The sight of it all was horrific, and yet... somehow beautiful, seeing this dragon’s full destructive power unleashed first-hand. After the carnage, Ghidorah turned to him, regarding him with six blood-red eyes. Gigan was ready to go down fighting, but to his surprise, the dragon turned and flew off into the void. Leaving him alone for the very first time.
His mind-control was lost completely. No orders, no reassurance that everything was okay. Nothing but silence. With everything he’s ever known gone, Gigan knew not what to do. Is this what it feels like to finally leave the nest? Was he ready?
........
Of course he was. His Nebulan ‘parents’ taught him all he needed to know in life, and he went forth to make his own path. He forged his own way, making a living as an assassin and a pirate. He met with old friends, recruiting Megalon into his crew, and made new ones, meeting a grumpy ol’ centipede. He also took those same friends and threw them under the bus when the law finally caught up with them.
He was totally going to come back for them, honest....
His career as an assassin came to an end, however, when the worst day of his life happened. It was like any other, coming to meet those who wanted a job done. However, this turned out to be nothing more than a means to trap the cyborg and put him through another Change...
This one, for the worst, as it completely stripped him of his space-duckness, his feathers gone, his sails tainted red. His new ‘Masters’ wishing to enslave him...
Needless to say, it didn’t end well for them, when they learned the mind-control chip was only ever mild and served more as a means of communication than anything. The Nebulans never needed complete control, like Ghidorah’s mind-control chip was designed for. They had Gigan’s loyalty because they were all he’s ever known. Like hell, he’s letting his freedom go for some no-name low-lives who think they’re hot shit.
Still, the whole experience left its mark. He quit the idea of working as an assassin, and went full-time pirate. Taking out all the anger and frustration on innocent ships, innocent worlds. Stealing their most important resources to sell on the underground space-market. Accumulating riches in the most dishonorable of means.
But every so often, the thought of a dragon would enter his mind. Those gold scales, those massive wings, a complete disregard for life. Everything he could ever want in a mate...
... He would have extra fun with his victims whenever he got that bothered.
Until one day, he decided he was finally going to act on those desires, make those fantasies a reality. He had the tracking information on Ghidorah, he just needed to catch up to him. Not too hard when the dragon would spend so much time destroying any life-bearing worlds he came across.
When he finally did meet his Master’s killer once more, he... didn’t really know what to do from here. His new Final Wars form made him a freak; even if he were to do a proper courtship, he was certain it wouldn’t be successful. Maybe play off his new look like it was an intentional change, something he labeled a “work-in-progress”?
Would Ghidorah even recognize him?
Turns out, yes, yes he did. Despite Gigan’s attempts at friendly re-introduction, Ghidorah seemed just as hostile towards him as before, making it clear that he was still holding a grudge against the cyborg. But the dragon never really escalated that hatred into an actual fight.
This was something he can work with.
And he was nothing if not persistent. Unlike all those other females the Nebulans would try to pair him with, this one was special. He wanted him, forever and not just for the night. For that, he knew he had to earn Ghidorah’s forgiveness. Maybe then, the dragon will be willing to give him a chance.
Worst case scenario, he still remembered how to activate that mind-control chip...

pru could have had it all it could have explored the long term impacts of the kaiju war on the environment (nuclear winter from the initial drops to kill kaiju or the devestated ecosystems for example) and society and how society changed after a war that forced disparate communities to come together to try and survive and the technological advancements from the information gained by kbio research (cloning tech could be applied in so many ways not the least of which being in medical treatments) and the use of jtech in other fields such as prosthetics (if you can hook up to a jaeger to control it neurally why not tinker around with that and make more sophisticated prostheteses?) and the handling of the ppdc post war and. so. many. other things. (i personally wish we’d learnt more about, say, kaiju cultists). but no uprising had to butcher the world building that had already been established bring in bland characters give female characters little development (see jules as The Love Interest and liwen as Mako’s Replacemt (and honestly a pretty charicatured depiction like we get it chinese people are uncaring and cold and only focused on success and profit)) and killing off an already established beloved character and horrifically handle a sensitive topic (newt being under precursor control) and doing a disservice to a well loved dynamic (newt and hermann do not have the wealth of interaction they do in the first film. yes the first film had them as secondary characters but at least it worked and didn’t feel like some strange parody. even if pru has them with more screen time it absolutely does not have the depth on a narrative level that it does in the first film).

Superman: Man of Tomorrow
I grew up reading nothing but Batman comics, I lived and died for Batman related media.  As my sophomore year of high school was coming to an end I had spent countless hours at my local comic shops, I had several long boxes of nothing but Batman comics, the first Keaton Batman movie had just come out three years before, and I was loving all of it.  Then something really great happened, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, not knowing it at the time, helped launch the DC Animated Universe with the award winning Batman: The Animated Series.
Their work on that show would quite literally leave it’s mark on the DCAU both in design and story telling for decades to come.   The DCAU has always had the trademark look that can be traced back to the Batman series and in my opinion the look and feel of the characters hit it’s apex with the release of Justice League: Doom.  While the DCAU would never really be eye popping when it came to it’s visuals, often very flat, minimalist design work, and even less attention to background frames and perspectives, it was the characterizations of the beloved comic source material that just made them all enjoyable.
So why all this background on myself and the history of the DCAU, well because this new film, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, is easily the most beautiful thing to come out of the DC animated workshop and it’s a huge departure from what the DCAU has delivered in the past.  The first hour of this movie had me transfixed with it’s visuals.  Cinematic framing, depth of field, fully animated faces for the all of the primary characters, richly detailed and seemingly hand painted backgrounds, I was just completely in awe of it.
I would tell you to watch it just to enjoy the beauty of it, because sadly this original retelling of Superman’s origin is unbelievably awful.  It’s on par with the horrible decision making that led to the recent Batman: Hush animated film that for some reason could not actually tell the story of the Hush villain but instead made the Hush character an alias for the Riddler (sorry if I spoiled that, but sorry they fucked up and I don’t care if I ruin what they ruined for Batman fans).
The setting for Man of Tomorrow is a in near future Metropolis.  Ipads and video calling are all things that Clark Kent, newly minted intern at the Daily Planet, uses to stay in touch with Ma and Pa Kent back on the farm.   Clark is struggling with whether or not he should fully reveal himself to the general population or continue to be a mysterious do gooder dressed in black bike leathers and aviator goggles.  He has no idea where he’s from and all he has to go on is the fact that human entertainment has very rarely painted aliens in a good light.
Then at the launching of a new Lexcorp rocket Clark’s world is thrown into chaos when Lobo the bounty hunter arrives looking for the last Kryptonian.  From there things just get more and more messy.  This retelling of Clark’s first days of being Superman is disjointed, faces that really never had any part in his origins are running around, and worse yet Parasite’s origin is tied to weapon Lobo tries to use on Clark but instead catches some unsuspecting civilian who becomes the power leaching super villain.... oh wait that’s right he, for no apparent reason, becomes a kaiju size monster.
It’s such a mess, and the resolution of the conflict for the film is even more ridiculous.  Yet I’ll still tell you to watch because honestly the first hour of the movie is just jaw dropping beautifu.  Then, as the plot becomes a mess and the budget for the animation dwindles, god you can literally watch it get more and more sloppy as the movie nears it’s climax, it turns what little promise the first hour had into one of the worst stories told by the DCAU yet.  Man if Justice League: Doom had looked like this ten years ago I would have died and gone to comic book heaven.
