If going by overall record, Sarutobi remains the best Hokage. When you think "Hokage", you think of him, and for damn good reason.
But in terms of notable achievements while holding office, both small and further-reaching, Tsunade gets that honor, and its especially impressive given the absolute Hell she had to work with and she still did a better job than Danzo (who abused his power), Kakashi (who was completely inept at the job), and Naruto (who is THE WORST). It really puts into perspective that her most major failings came directly from Kishimoto writing her to be so easily kowtowed by the wants and requests of Naruto and his friends out of biased favorability. Had that trait been excised, she'd be closer to Sarutobi's level, and further ahead of Hashirama, Tobirama, and Minato than she already was.
I think the misogyny in the fandom is even worse than that in the manga. Tsunade was portrayed as a decent hokage in the manga, but the fandom often said she's the worst cos she's the weakest power wise and she listened to Naruto's plead for Sasuke. While Tobirama, a racist who listened to rumours, who invented a jutsu that required human sacrifice, which helped revive Madara twice, is said to be the best hoakge.
I know, right? It’s funny to see this discrepancy in the fandom. I get that people cared only about the power houses but it’s funny that they bring in the middle arguments that often have nothing to do with the power levels. If was often stressed in the manga how being a Hokage isn’t just about power levels.
Hell, it’s the very same reason Jiraiya refused to take on the role and recommended and had faith in Tsunade. Jiraiya, you know, the character we all love, whose somewhat perverted manners we always excuse while bashing the female characters, but moving on since that’s not the point here.
But I find it indeed funny for people to over glorify Tobirama who seems to have some questionable views in regards to the human life compared to Tsunade who, not only did she had to clean after them all, but also is a “guardian of life” if you want to call it like that.
Yes, Tsunade listened to Naruto’s plea (and look at that bastard now what he’s saying about her!!) and didn’t let the order for Sasuke to be executed, for him to be tracked down and killed and many belittle her for that but those very people are the people who scream how cool Sasuke is and Tobirama as well.
So I’m like… really? The double standard and misogyny is that big?
When it’s about Tsunade you throw all of it in her head and call it a bad Hokage but god forbid to say that the reason she had it that way was because of the mess of her predecessors. For fuck’s sake, Hashirama himself admitted when Tsunade apologized for the war, though she shouldn’t have given all the things she wasn’t responsible of since according to Kishi’s message these were mistakes from the past.
So if someone is gonna hold Tsunade up to the “bad Hokage” shit, might as well hold the others as well since technically you know… it’s not even the slightest of her faults or bad managements.
Hell, when she said to use Bee and Naruto as weapons for the war she was quickly put down in the manga only for it in the end to turn exactly like she said it would…
So yeah, this fandom is full of misogynist butts if you ask me…

ON THE SLASH J. OKAY.)#but honestly though i did expect Gem to hold a grudge over the 2v1 in SL. and. its good that there are consequences???#it IS a ‘betrayal’ in Gem’s eyes. they were friends. they were murder besties for the last two sessions and then Pearl chose Scar over her#and its awesome man. [through gritted teeth] this is awesome man this will be good for character development ok ok ok. ok?#its also got something to do with Pearl having the red creep in. i think#because during SL Gem was like. nearly idolising the Scarlet Pearl persona while vaguely aware that her own reputation has a similar effect#and yknow. the horrors. the fact that their image is so heavily built on what others deem them to be and they can only play into it#but by the end of SL Gem gets ‘betrayed’ by this persona that she looked up to#and also her own ‘GeminiSlay’ intimidating image is also starting to fall apart. partly of her own will#and now shes watching Pearl slowly turn red again. and this time she knows its not good for her or Pearl#so shes distancing herself from it. shes ‘trying to fix her reputation’. she sees Pearl falling into it again and just. no. i dont love you#you betrayed me last season#but on Pearl’s end of things she’s already deep into the idea that as long as you say you ‘forgive’ someone then everything thats happened#in the past doesn’t matter and they can all be friends. and nooo absolutely no grudges will be held. no emotional repression here#so. because thats happened to her in her own team she thinks the same can happen with her and Gem#and thats so. im going to blow myself up now

To those of us who are MJ lovers, you are doing the lord's work here. She's far from a flawless person, and that's because she is a person. Off of the pedestel Peter mentally puts her on and in her actual life, she's a mess: damaged, yet strong. That's what we love about her.
And yeah, the other MJ is handled a lot better, but Mary Jane is actually still a far superior character to Gwen.
Mary Jane Watson From The Spider-Man Trilogy Is Ridiculously Overhated
Tumblr media
I keep seeing a bunch of stuff online about how the Raimi Trilogy MJ sucks, how she’s “the real villain” and a horrible person, blah blah blah.
Truth be told, I don’t have that much of an attachment to this character, I’ll defend people like Katara from the unjust hate she receives because she’s one of favorite characters and heroines EVER! But MJ (in these movies anyway) is merely okay. I much prefer the leading ladies of the other Spider-Man films, Gwen Stacy and Michelle Jones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have more personality, better relationships with Spidey and aid him more in his heroics. In the original trilogy Peter and MJ are often at odds and usually the later always has to be rescued (not that it’s her fault). There are legitimate reasons to dislike this depiction of MJ (i.e. her personality isn’t exactly comic accurate). But a lot the hate she receives is relatively unfounded and definitely in misogyny, coming mostly from incels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, seriously, this just screams incel loser syndrome right here.
First and foremost, MJ is a fairly sympathetic character, she’s generally a kind, friendly individual for the most part, which is why Peter is drawn to her, but she’s also deeply insecure due to her abusive father and thinks her worth is determined by whom she’s in a relationship with, only for these people, such as Flash and Harry to mistreat her or demean her respectively.
People often get mad at MJ for her treatment of Peter, but really think about things from her perspective. He’s the only guy who treats her with sincere genuine kindness for the most part, then out of the blue, after he indirectly confesses his feelings about her and she directly confesses her, he states they can only be friends, then to quote TV Tropes, we the audience have a…
Tumblr media
Then Peter tells her he wants to be with her after she’s publicly announced she’s engaged and the later when she comes close to considering it tries to back out of it, again we the audience know why, by MJ doesn’t.
However, I will say ditching her fiancé at the altar was messed up and I can’t really defend it, probably the worst thing MJ did especially because said fiancée was a genially nice dude. But hey, it’s sweet to see her and Peter finally admit their feelings despite her knowing he’s Spider-Man.
She also gets a lot of flack in Spider-Man 3, which I also find kinda unfounded. One big reasons is her essentially cheating on Peter by kissing Harry, but people tend to forget:
She quickly realized what she was doing was wrong.
Peter also kissed Gwen right in front of her, without much thought, you could argue that kiss was staged, but still it’s rather hypocritical.
I’m not saying MJ is a flawless woman who can do no wrong, but her that her vices are overblown by so called fans. It can only be due to misogyny seeing as Peter and Harry also do pretty jerkish things. I already mentioned some of Peter’s actions earlier, but in the first movie Harry essentially goes after someone he knows his best friend likes as soon as she breaks up with her ex and doesn’t even tell his best friend about it, then his dad pretty much calls his girlfriend a slut and that he should just do her while he can (something people actually agree with) and he barely defends her. But neither he or Peter get as much flak. Granted I really like both characters myself, but still.
I just don’t get why people are so obsessed with villainizing MJ in these films. Isn’t the whole point of these films is that anyone even good people can make bad or selfish choices, but sometimes all they need is forgiveness, understanding and compassion. That’s one of the core themes of the trilogy, especially the final film. So I’m gonna leave you with this…

I do feel like the way Kyoshi was written in the Avatar reboot was lowkey influenced by the fandom's perception of her. Cause like in the original show she's really just portrayed as a pragmatist who's willing to kill if necessary. Like Aang is conflicted about killing the Fire Lord and she's like "well if I were in your position I'd do it but that's just me. Good luck." And then people started making memes where she's like a murderous psychopath who thinks extreme violence is always the solution. And it was funny at first cause it was just exaggerating for comedy but now everyone thinks she was actually like that in the show when she really wasn't. And then in the remake her introductory scene is her angrily yelling at this 12 year old that he needs to stop being a little pussy and be a ruthless warrior or whatever and the only explanation I can think of is that someone in the writer's room maybe looked at a few too many of those memes.

I see so so many videos and comments and discussion from people including artists expressing grievance and cringing in one way or another at modern and performance art, and all I can think is damn. That sort of art is really goddamn effective when it gets this much publicity and attention from people trying to cope because it gets under their skin so easily and not realizing the irony
At this point there's no modern or performance art I don't respect (other than ones that cause harm to animals 😐) just for being able to so effortlessly get reactions out of people. Like the "who's afraid of yellow, red and blue" paintings that to most people look like solid boring colors, 'how in the world is that art?' and all that, and yet, fittingly for its name, it gets vandalized (and is also impossible to restore because no one can replicate the intricate technique of the author). Some things never change. Godspeed modern and performance artists

Yeah, no offense to Temari or her fans, but when you've got not only Tsunade but also Ino Yamanaka right fucking there, how do you in all honesty say Temari is Best Girl? For me, Temari is about as good as Tenten (which, contrary to popular belief, ain't bad at all - it at least puts you ahead of Hinata, Karin, Sakura and all the rest.)
🔥tsunade
Fanboy mindset that she was the worst hokage is utter crap and based on nothing (except sexism). You’re seriously gonna tell me push-over Hiruzen for example was a better Hokage? What are the other hokages feats that supposedly make them better than her?
Oh and I don’t like Jiraiya/Tsunade pairing. The way he treated her sucked and she deserves better, I’m glad she never reciprocated his feelings.
I also think she is much better than someone like Temari, who always gets crowned as the best female character because she is a tomboy I guess. Tsunade is way more important plot wise and also more entertaining as a character. I feel people dismiss her more than others because she is not as easy to ship.

You say you don’t like the killer reveal, why? I actually think dev made some great choices and I’d love to talk to you about your perspective.
i don't want to get too deep into it because, like i mentioned in my previous post, i don't want my criticism to come off as negativity towards the series or discourage anyone involved in the production of the show because it's honestly not a huge deal. like, it in no way ruins the show or makes it less enjoyable for me. and i don't think the choice of who the culprit is is a bad one at all, i'm mostly unsatisfied with the way the chapter handles it.
[spoilers beneath the cut, obvi lol. and please remember this is just my opinion. me having and expressing my opinion is not hate towards the series. i'm nervous enough as it is posting just this and not a bigger essay on all my thoughts because i really don't want to have this be misconstrued, nor do i want any criticism i have to give, regardless of how innocent and respectful my intentions, to make drdtdev or anyone who works on the series feel bad.]
i think Ace being the killer DOES make sense. i have no qualms with him being the blackened, in theory. do i think he could've made for a great survivor, or have really interesting growth throughout the coming chapters? yeah! i would have loved for Ace to be kept around for much longer. but him being the killer this chapter isn’t inherently bad. it's now clear that there's a specific direction Ace's character was meant to go in this story and i think that's fine.
my problem is with what *didn't* happen with Ace's character up to this point.
the chapter hasn't concluded yet so there's still a chance for my thoughts to change, though i don't think it'll make much of a difference. but i'm still waiting to see if it can stick the landing. and even if it doesn't, that's okay. i've already accepted it, i'm just still disappointed by it all the same.
Ace, honestly, hasn't played much of an active role in the story. he's been a source of conflict and comedic relief, and that's okay, not every character has to be as important as Xander or David...but he hasn't really gotten to *do* anything. this series is very character-driven, and thus is very focused on the relationships between other characters. Ace has only had one notable relationship (outside of his feud with Nico, but i'm not really including that as a "relationship" for obvious reasons), and that was with Levi. and that didn't even stay positive for very long. and we also know now that Levi didn't even care about him to begin with because he doesn't care about people in general.
not only did Ace never really get to establish any other relationships, no one ever LIKED him. of course a good portion of the fandom likes him, but in the actual story, no one cares about him. no one will miss him. his death is honestly kind of meaningless character-wise. does it serve as a lesson to some of the other characters? sure. but he's going to be dying here with no one ever liking or caring about him.
Min's story wasn't just a cautionary tale. people did like her, people did care about her. she was friends with a lot of characters, she got to have an impact in the daily lives of others. we got to know her better, the things she liked, her deeper thoughts and opinions on things. she got to do stuff, and we got to learn about her. her death meant more to the characters beyond just being the first culprit. she died as a person, not just as a character.
most of the stuff we know about Ace is surface level or things confirmed in Q&As. he doesn't get to contribute much aside from the aforementioned conflict/comedic relief. i understand where the show is going with that idea, and why him not being liked by anyone is a specific part of what led him to murder, but that's not really what irks me. it's that Ace never got to really be a *person.* he's essentially a plot device, serving the greater "good person" theme going on this chapter, and filling in the smaller roles in the story when needed, like an antagonist in a scene or delivering a gag. yes, his admittance to killing Arei and eventual post-trial trauma dump will give him a bit more humanity and character...but that's not really enough.
we only get to see Ace how the other members of the cast see Ace: his loud, combative, aggressive side. the side that makes people think he's nothing more than an angry meathead who can't do anything right. we never got to see much of his other sides, of a much more somber, melancholic Ace. receiving even a hint of the Ace we see in his confession of guilt beforehand would have given him the depth we needed before this point.
to explain what i mean: imagine how unsatisfying it would have been if we never got to actually see Arei's breakdown in the playground. if Teruko had left before it happened, and we only get to learn what happened from a flashback from David's perspective. we already feel the weight and tragedy of Arei's death when her body is discovered because we knew beforehand why she behaved the way she did, how she never even liked being the way she is, and wishing she could be a good person like Eden. if we didn't get to see that happen beforehand, Arei's death would feel very flat and detached. her character growth would've happened entirely retroactively.
that's how i feel with Ace. it's not like he didn’t get enough spotlight this chapter, he certainly did. but every scene he was in really didn't really add anything new to him. the only thing that "progressed" with him was his hatred and paranoia. we just see him descend with no uplifting moments, no emotional hook to make us feel anything for him. the closest we get is the scene where he's arguing with Nico and Veronika at lunch, ranting about how poorly everyone thinks of him and that they all assume that he's for some reason happy to be the way he is. but it's really the barest of scrapes towards the deeper layers of his character.
a big problem is that there were a lot of chances for his character to actively be *explored*, but instead, the narrative perspective of him stays completely stagnant. the time we get with him this chapter doesn't give him any greater focus. and sure, you could say that that might be a big giveaway to him being the culprit, but i think if the time between character spotlight is distributed evenly, that would be easily circumvented. there was a lot more time that could've been spent building Ace's character beyond his animosity and self-loathing tendencies. we could have had someone actually attempting to bond with him, even if it doesn't turn out well. even if all the characters distrust each other to varying degrees, there's still a lot of characters that like each other or have unique bonds with each other that make them stand out and feel worth remembering, because those bonds contribute something to their characters. but with Ace? he truly gets the short end of the stick, because this isn't just the characters neglecting him, it's the story itself. if Ace got to have a moment like Arei, maybe someone to confide in, even if he wasn't really friends with them or liked them at all, him being vulnerable just once and having a moment with someone else would have rooted him in more as a person who fell victim to what the killing game wanted from him and not just a fictional character fulfilling the purpose required of them in the story.
honestly, it's a bit of a slap in the face, the way the show goes about it. because in hindsight, Ace's whole character is *meant* to be wasted potential. after all, his related phrase on Mai's bio page is "a girl who had a bright future".
he was set up to have the potential to change, the potential to add more to the story, the potential to show us more than what we were given. and i think the show kind of knows that and specifically perpetuates that. the scene where Teruko tells Levi to give up on trying to apologize to Ace almost reads as the show itself telling you to give up on Ace. that, why should we care about him? he's not going to amount to what we want from him. there's no use in investing our feelings in him.
whether or not any of that actually was intentionally doesn't matter, unfortunately, because rewatching so many scenes having this new context really makes it all seem like Despair Time doesn't want you to care about Ace. that Ace is meant to be a waste, that that's the core of his character. him being the epitome of wasted potential could have been great, actually, if they chose to use even a slight bit of that potential to build him up more before his inevitable demise. instead we watch him eat shit throughout the entire show thus far only for him to get royally fucked at the very end in the worst way possible. Ace's theme of wasted potential is only wasted potential because nothing is ever done with him. not actively, anyways. whatever his post-trial confessional is like won't really give us what we needed from the start. Ace didn't just deserve better in his life. he deserves better as a fictional character. he deserved to be a person and not *just* a character. he deserved to have deeper, emotional character moments outside of the trial, long before his murder confession and rapidly approaching demise. he deserved to be 3-dimensional.
again, this is all just my personal opinion, and there's still a chance the show can stick the landing and make Ace as the culprit feel a lot more natural and deserved. i'm not really confident in that happening, but drdt is full of surprises as well as a lot of great writing. that being said, even though i believe they kinda fumbled the bag with Ace here, i don't hate this turn of events. although he's a big favorite of mine, i still wanted Eden to be innocent over him, because she's also a great character and her killing Arei would not only be pretty huge character assassination, but would also make Arei's death meaningless. and i also think there were other characters who could have been better candidates as the chapter 2 killer (not just Hu, i think Levi, Arturo, and maybe even J also could've made for compelling culprits with the right reasons).
i'm content with this. i'm heartbroken he's going so early and i wish the execution of his guilt had been a lot better, but overall it's not terrible. he just deserved so much more in many different ways.

I actually really want Eugene to officiate the Varigo wedding because one, it’s not a very official or proper wedding. If anything, it’s something Rapunzel and Varian put together in one week and is essentially just a giant party where they blow stuff up and eat cake. Varian totally asks Eugene thirty minutes beforehand if he will officiate and after five minutes of sobbing, he agrees.
And two, because I want him to say this line-
“It has been a joy to watch your distracting childish rivalry turn into a distracting childish courtship, which will undoubtedly turn into a distracting childish marriage.”

Can't believe the SS fandom glorifies Tsunade and says she's the best Hokage lol. Tsunade is trash she's a drunk alcoholic bitch. She practically didn't call out Danzo or the Elders also looking at Danzo he had connections to Orochimaru and she ignored it.
you serious? that’s the most sane and reasonable thing that I’ve seen from SS!! Are you sure they’re SS?? This is unbelievable. Tsunade stood up to Danzo way more than Sarutobi ever did. She’s also the one Hokage who didn’t leave much a negative legacy and at the same time had some real achievement like creating medical ninjutsu as a discipline, overseeing the rebuilding of Konoha after Pein’s attack etc.
Was she ever seen drunk at the office? I think she’s clean when she’s hokage right?
Actually I got to admit SS are sometimes sane when they’re NOT talking about SS.

Complaining abt Suicide Squad yet again but the fact that they have Waller exposing the alien community to space racist attacks and talking abt how she got to her position through deceit and being a terrible person and stuff is just. Ahsfiwueh JUST SAY YOU DONT KNOW WALLER.
Anyways literally the 3rd mission of the Squad ever (and the first framed as smth Waller picked and not orders from above) was the Squad discrediting and stopping a rogue vigilante who was only arresting POC and funneling white people into white supremacy groups (of which he was the most prominent member) in SUICIDE SQUAD #4. and it's explicitly framed as this mission being personal for Waller that she's hiding from the government bc its illegal like. Guys. Please why are we having her incite (space bc comics) racist attacks now
Also the whole "Amanda got her position through deceit and being a terrible person" NO. she KEPT her position through being shitty and playing complicated political games!!! She wasn't always that way like there is a difference and it is IMPORTANT ppl PLEASEEEE. In Secret Origins #14 we learn Amanda's backstory and she used to be a normal, caring person! Like even after she entered into working in government and politics she wasn't automatically morally bankrupt like please people. She was originally given control of the Squad by Reagan (*sigh* 80s comics...) to distract and get rid of her because she was so successful at pushing progressive social policy in Congress. Acting like she's this static pillar of evil is such a waste of her character and so fucking uninteresting and disrespectful to her arc it drives me MAD.
Like I am NOT saying Waller is all sunshine and rainbows, she fucking SUCKS (said w love <3) but like there's a human being there. It's a progression, she has a character arc like please, DC, please!!! They've fucked up Waller so bad and made her so opaque and uninteresting she can't even be the protagonist of her own story for fucks sake!
Like I don't know how many times I have to scream it until DC hears me or remembers but WALLER IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF SUICIDE SQUAD. ITS HER BOOK. yet right now she's a cutout to be used as the villain wherever the writers please. Even in her book we get none of her perspective really displayed, no exploration of her thoughts with any kind of understanding of the role she traditionally has played and was made to play in the story.
#its like youre unable to root for her in any form. which is annoying bc shes actually awesome actually#also having her say “actually im the good guy fuck you'' w/o any actual deep analysis of her psyche or whatever while doing these things#doesnt count as development or showing shes 3 dimensional. its just having 2 dimensional waller say shes right when everyone is obviously#supposed to believe shes wrong#anyways i want real waller back please i miss herrrrrrrr#anyways hope mr john ridley has read secret origins no 14. i know its from 1987 but please guys please. my only hope#also it was a few months ago but i think they tried to push certain elements of a diff backstory in dream team and sorry but fuck that. and#any mention of another waller background like my eyes are closed sry. im a preboot truther#actually im just ignorant of most squad comics outside the original series. im gonna do a readthrough and become knowledgeable on other#stuff i just need to find time. so if im wrong then sorry if its smth factual and if you disagree with my opinion then uh sorry for ur loss#anyways shoutout to the time i had a nerd night w my one friend and she was asking me abt dc and said my favorite villains and i said waller#and silver swan. and she had a “yuck WHY” to waller and a ???? to silver swan. love shouting out my faves and explaining them to the less#informed. didnt say a number 3 but would probably be parallax ig. idk hes kind of slay. or maybe someone else honestly i like hal but waller#and nessie are blorbo level for me i could think abt them for hours#or maybe it wouldnt be parallax actually idk who my 3 would be. hes definitely up there but way below the other 2. maybe the cheetah#interpretation that i personally have. v different from the popular cheetah interpretation esp rucka vers actually. much closer to the pérez#and esp develops some subtext there surrounding barbara and the exploitation and theft of sacred cultural artifacts and pieces but also#like british colonization a lil bit#but i actually despise the cheetah that lives in my head but think shed be interesting to use narratively and see diana fight#vs the other guys who i find interesting and sympathetic and like for themselves#whereas my fave interpretation of cheetah can rot in hell#i got off topic here#blah#swishy rant#also disclaimer that w the main character ik dreamer is the main character of dream team. im talking more in general and that amanda should#always have a huge role as shes the main character of the squad and yet is treated like its villain and not its protag#sui sq
