A little bit about Fandom Trumps Hate

FTH is an online fanworks auction, designed to raise money for progressive nonprofit organizations that help and support marginalized people. In the past seven years, thousands of fans have joined forces to raise nearly $240,000 for a range of progressive organizations.

So, what are you willing to offer? If you are an author, artist, beta, or provide other services within fandom, all are welcome!

Check out the list below for different types of fanworks and fan labor to get an idea of what you may like to sign up for.

You can offer any type of fanwork that can be delivered digitally, including:

written fanworks (fic, poetry, remixes, etc.)

digital art, which includes but is not limited to gifsets, manips, mood boards, etc.

Create (and bid on) For All Mankind Fanworks in the 2024 FTH auction!

Greetings, small-but-beloved tumblr FAM community!

Now that we've all survived season 4 (barely), the season for fanworks is upon us: fic, art, and vids (and more) to help us celebrate, repair, wallow in, or otherwise explore the corners of this brilliant and rich world and its characters. And the fanworks we have are great... but wouldn't be be wonderful if we had... even more????

Enter Fandom Trumps Hate, a fanworks auction that raises money for a variety of progressive nonprofits.

That’s right, when you participate in the Fandom Trumps Hate auction – whether as a creator of fanworks or as someone bidding for the chance to prompt those fanworks – you’ll be helping raise money for a variety of awesome causes. You'll also be helping to bring more FAM fanworks into the world!

Creator signups open on February 5th, and bidding will run from March 5th-March 9th. You can see the full calendar here, and find lots more details by checking out the @fandomtrumpshate tumblr (including the FAQ and list of supported nonprofits) or by looking at the FTH carrd.

Fandom Trumps Hate 2023

Fandom Trumps Hate 2023 creator signups are open! FTH is an online, pan-fandom fanworks auction, designed to raise money for progressive nonprofit organizations. Fan creators offer works (written works, digital art, podfics, fanvids, fan labor, etc.) to bidders, the winning bidders then donate to the chosen organizations, then the creators create requested works as a gift for that person to thank them for this donation.

A full rundown of FTH, including the auction calendar, can be found through their Tumblr or through their Carrd. Creator signups close on Feburary 19th, 2023. Bidding opens on March 1st, 2023.

SVSSS currently has 12 creator offers so far! And of our sibling fandoms on that list, MDZS has 15 and TGCF has 7! If you’re interested in taking on some prompts from fellow fans in order to support a good cause, FTH can be a lot of fun. I’ve participated in FTH a couple times now (I wrote 4 new SVSSS fics as gifts last year), so if anyone has any questions about my personal experience participating as both a writer and a bidder, feel free to drop me an ask or a message. You can also find the FTH team’s super helpful Signup Tips For First Time Creators on their blog.

Participating as a bidder can be a lot of fun, even if you don’t win. You can find a bunch of new authors, artists, and other creators for your fandoms. If you do win, you can request more fic for your favorite rarepair! (I wrote a Yue Qingyuan / Shang Qinghua fic last year!) You can request more art for your favorite character! If you have an idea that you’ve been itching to see happen, you can ask a fellow fan to finally bring it to life for you!

WHAT IT IS:

FTH is an online auction of fanworks, with the proceeds going to small, progressive nonprofits that are working to protect marginalized people. since 2016, they’ve raised a hefty chunk of change for some really worthy causes. check out their FAQ and their list of 2023 supported organizations.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

sign up to be a creator, and/or keep your eyeballs peeled for the offers to open so you can bid!

for creators: signups for the auction will be open from february 6-19. signups happen on google forms and the link will be available here, as well as on FTH’s tumblr and other social media sites.

for bidders: the auction site will be publicly visible on dreamwidth starting february 26 and the bidding happens between march 1-5. you can take a look at last year’s raven cycle auction site for some examples.

even if you don’t end up participating, consider spreading the word! the more people know about it, the more money we can raise, and the more new fics and artwork will be created that we can all enjoy.

Well I guess I’m offering a fic in fth this year, which I haven’t done in forever.

Will I regret this? Only time will tell. If I don’t show up on the auction site assume I regretted it in time to scrub my signup from our records 😅

I’ve signed up to offer two fics in this year’s FTH auction: a Captive Prince fic (10-20k), and a Folk of the Air Jude/Cardan fic (5-10k). I have nominated the Middle East Children’s Alliance as my chosen charity and hope that you will consider bidding when it opens!

Fandom Trumps Hate creator signups are officially open!

Just to re-introudce the auction if you haven't seen the posts going around: Fandom Trumps Hate started in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election as a way to organize fandoms in support of non-profit organizations working to protect marginalized people. In the last seven years, the FTH community has collectively raised just shy of $240k!

In 2023 we had 13 offerings for 9-1-1 and we would love to have even more to offer this year as we head over to our new network!

Creators have from February 5th through February 19th to signup! FAQs and the full event calendar are available @fandomtrumpshate, but the link above will take you to the post with the sign-up link and info.

As always, even if you can't commit to making a piece this year, we always need bidders (5 bucks can get you some pretty cool stuff with us) and people to spread the word!

Fandom Trumps Hate is a fanworks auction that has collectively raised almost $200k for progressive nonprofits in the past 6 years and we’re excited to continue into 2023!

If you create content for All for the Game (fanfic, art, moodboards, podfics, etc):

You can contribute your skills to support these organizations! You get to decide what sort of piece you’re willing to create as a thank you to the bidder who makes the highest donation. You can see the 2022 AFTG offering list to get an idea of what these posts look like. This year, creator signups start on February 6th.

If you enjoy All for the Game content:

You can get a custom piece from FTH creators! Starting on February 26th, you can browse the different contributors who are willing to make an AFTG piece and reach out to them about what specific prompts/ideas you’d like to see come to life! If you win the highest bid (bidding opens March 1st and ends March 5th), you make your promised donation to one of the organizations we’re supporting this year to receive your gift! 🎁

Of course, even if you don’t have the spare change to donate this year, signal-boosting auction posts is a huge help, especially for smaller fandoms. The mods even have a guide post to help if you want boost FTH in other fandoms you’re interested in seeing more works in!

i saw that FTH signups are approaching... i have a lot on my todo list this year, but i might think about joining this year. i learned about it too late last time, and the similar sorts of charity auctions that have happened since then have been organized on twitter so i missed them as well.

if i did join, though, i probably couldn't work on the product until the second half of the year, so idk if it would be especially nice to the auction winner in that case orz

Hacks fanworks for a good cause!

It's that time of year again, Hacks hive! the Fandom Trumps Hate fanworks auction is back, which means that you once again have the chance to find the Ava to your Deborah (or vice versa) by taking part!

For the past 7 years, @fandomtrumpshate has been running fanwork auctions to help raise money for a range of small progressive nonprofits. That includes Hacks fanworks! So far, the auction has raised nearly $240,000 for a range of progressive causes. (You can see the 2024 list of supported organizations here.)

If you want to help raise money for these awesome causes while also helping to put more Hacks fanworks in the world, there are two ways to do so:

sign up to make fanworks. By signing up to make a fanwork, you're donating your time and talents to create a fanwork for another fan in response to their prompt. You have the chance to say what you're excited to create, as well as the things you're unwilling to do. You also have the opportunity to specify which of the supported organizations you want your bidder's donations to go to.

bid on fanwork offers. If you win a fanwork auction (or more than one!) you'll make a donation to one (or more) of the supported organizations for the year. After that, you'll be put in touch with your creator so that you can start talking to them about the fanwork they'll create for you!

And since the calendar for FTH is so long -- bidders have until June to give their creators a prompt, and creators have until Dec 31st to finish their fanwork -- it will be easy to include S3 in your fanwork/prompt, if that's your preference!

Creator signups are open now until February 19th (you can sign up here!) and bidding will run from March 5th-9th.

What is Fandom Trumps Hate?

What fandoms are included in FTH?

Any of them. Seriously. This is a pan-fandom auction, and you can sign up to create fanworks for literally any fandom you want. It can be harder to find bidders for smaller or more boutique fandoms, but we encourage you to promote your own auction to your fandom friends (and to get some of them to sign up too! After all, critical mass can only help.)

When is the auction happening this year?

Creator signups for the 2024 FTH auction will open on February 5th, and the auction itself will take place at the beginning of March. The full calendar for the auction can be found here.

What types of fanwork can I offer?

You can offer any type of fanwork that can be delivered digitally, including:

fan labor, which includes but is not limited to betaing, brit/japan/america-picking, or offering specialist expertise.

Each of these categories is intentionally broad, so that the auction can encompass as many kinds of fanworks as possible. When participants sign up, they will be asked to describe their offering not only in terms of one of these five categories, but also in terms of the relevant subcategory (e.g. someone who signs up to offer fan labor will be asked to indicate whether they are offering beta work, -picking, or translation) and to add any other necessary information in a comments box.

N.B. Please do not ever call your fanwork a “commission!” Neither the creator nor FTH are receiving any money at any point, and the word “commission” implies that they/we are.

What is Fandom Trumps Hate?

We began FTH in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 Presidential Election, and over the course of the last 6 years have raised over $192,000 for a range of amazing organizations.

How do I participate in the auction? Become a creator and/or bidder and/or volunteer:

The auction itself will be hosted on Dreamwidth, on a separate site dedicated solely to this year’s auction offerings. This site is not available yet: it will be publicly visible at the start of “browsing week,” which is the 3-4 day period before the auction officially opens.  But if you’re wondering what these auction posts look like, take a look at last year’s auction site for some examples. Although we update our tagging system every year, the tags for the 2023 auction will work pretty similarly to those on last year’s site.

What types of fanwork can I offer?

You can offer any type of fanwork that can be delivered digitally, including:

written fanworks (fic, poetry, remixes, etc.)

digital art, which includes but is not limited to gifsets, manips, moodboards, etc.

podfics

fanvids (including fancams)

The Regiment of Fan Laborers (ROFL) aims to connect FTH creators with beta readers, expertise-pickers, and other kinds of fan labor support. The ROFL is a group of fan laborers who – in addition to offering individual fan labor auctions – have volunteered to make their services available to anyone creating fanworks for FTH over the course of the year. Fan laborers who sign up to offer their services in the FTH auction can opt-in to the ROFL, or they can join without offering an auction by emailing fandomtrumpshate at gmail dot com. Note that fan laborers who sign up for auctions are NOT automatically enrolled in the ROFL.
