FTD Deleted Scene

Shoutout to @moonchild-daniella for showing me this but after all this time finally got an answer to where this pic came from.

For those who don't have Instagram the story goes like this:

“In the 1980s co-star Anne Helm opened up her original script that spoke of a complete scene where the Kwimper family decided to skip town because a girl is on her way to get married to Toby Kwimper.” (Fb group ELVIS PICTURES) When Toby mentions Gertrude Patterson and the times tables, that is the girl they are running from. “That’s what happened that night behind the bowling alley with Gertrude. I forgot the nineses.”

The post also included different pictures, some of which I've never seen before when searching for the deleted scene.

Man I wish we still had this whole opening scene. The whole concept of Toby hooking up with Gertrude only to skip town when she wants to marry him is so perfect. If we were able to see this whole scene or at least be able to see the whole script of this scene, it would add so much context to why he doesn't want to get married.

He vaguely mentions being with Gertrude behind the bowling alley but we still have no idea how far things got with them. We can't assume that it's sex simply because that's way too extreme based on what we know about him.

If anyone knows anything else about this or wants to share their own headcanons on what this scene would've meant for Toby's character leave a note down below.

Also this is how the book is different than the movie. To me, to fully understand Toby as a character you need both. The movie relies heavily on Elvis' non-verbal acting. The book on the other hand is directly written in Toby's POV. We understand exactly what he's thinking from moment to moment.

Him... the bastard man... the blorbo of all time......... I can't settle on just one for each category here, and several of these will be things I've rambled about in tags or replies somewhere, so you're getting lists. And tysm! :D

Actually supported by evidence in the text or subtext:

His chapter 1 plan 100% had Teruteru killing him as the end goal, and he wouldn't have stabbed someone else if that didn't happen. He'd either have stabbed himself or abandoned it. There are multiple ways the execution part of the 'murder' plan was sloppy to the point of being out-of-character for him, and not the sort of thing that would make him a stepping stone for ultimates: no way to locate someone in the dark, he'd be covered in blood afterwards if he did find someone, he put glowing paint on the knife as well as the tape...

The above is partly because his luck seems really, really good at keeping him alive at the expense of others. Even during the game it happens in chapter 1 (Imposter), chapter 3 (Tsumiki) and chapter 5 (he wasn't really dead and took out the only AI). If I was in his shoes in chapter 1 I'd expect to Luigi-wins-by-doing-absolutely-nothing my way through the entire goddamn game unless I could kill myself somehow, and attempting death via execution would risk winning the game anyway if the trial went in an absurd direction and his own confession wasn't trusted. The way he was more passive afterwards, trying to make someone plan an entire murder with him, makes the above likelier to me.

He has major untapped friendship potential with Nidai. They could bond over mutually not expecting to make it to 30, and the ways people react to finding that out about them, and his artbook opinion of Nidai admires his success despite his condition. Additionally, post-DR2 I feel like Nidai would be very persistent about getting him to move more and improve his quality of life; he could design a gentle program tailored to his specific needs. And him forcing Komaeda to yell self-affirmations would be hilarious.

He really wouldn't like being restrained. Ch2 was hell for him. It would render him a lot more vulnerable to any bad luck that came his way, he's had trauma involving being kidnapped, and a ball gag is one of only 3 gifts in the game he hates. (No shade to people writing komahina BDSM though.) I don't think it's a kink aversion thing because he's chill with being given a maid outfit and otherwise has no shame, lol.

Nothing to confirm or deny either way:

He's left-handed.

He's barely affected by the speech/language issues that are a major part of FTD. However, he is part of the unlucky minority that develop motor issues, and he wasn't doing a bit in the first trial when he said his handwriting was awful. This was not the case or was a lot milder when he first attended Hope's Peak. Suddenly waking up in the simulation with worse symptoms and then hearing he's lost years of memories, regardless of whether the above is a thing, would have really, really got to him.

He takes a lot of notes in case his memory fails him as well.

The fandom has diverse opinions on this, but imo on paper, or if he met Kamukura in a vacuum, Komaeda would like the Kamukura project. I'm not aware of any lines indicating whether talents being natural or the continued existence of a talentless underclass would be important to him, but what definitely does matter to him is the idea of becoming a stepping stone for hope, even at the expense of one's own life. He's even willing to make Ultimates die for other Ultimates' sake during the game (but presumably wouldn't do that outside of a zero sum situation). Hope's Peak has invented a way for talentless leeches to willingly sacrifice themselves to become vessels for new talented people? People that can bring about more hope for humanity than their body's former occupant ever could? Beautiful. As Hinata's foil it's reasonable to assume their ideologies overlapped a lot as well, and Hinata willingly signed up for this.

If he knew Hinata already, however? He'd struggle with cognitive dissonance. He'd tell himself he should be happy for someone in Hinata's position, but since he cares about him I think part of him would protest hard against Hinata ceasing to exist/be really glad the NWP brought him back, depending on when this is, and he would struggle to suppress that. Processing this postgame could be a catalyst for him to finally start to question his coping mechanisms.

Definitely not what canon was going for:

Does the way I generally disregard non-dr2 canon where it clashes with dr2 or wastes potential count lol?

For example, I think planes would be a major trigger for him. Maybe not discussing them or being near them- he handled going to the airport just fine in dr2- but in Dangan Island his freakout if prompted to think about flying a fighter plane is worse than any other anxiety/paranoia he displays in the mode. DR3 having him be chill after a plane crash feels at best like wasted potential, at worst OOC to me.

Covered-in-scars Komaeda fanon my beloved. It's thoroughly not canon but it just makes sense, and I headcanon that his coat is choppy from him cutting off tears from accidents as well. I like to think that his face is weirdly unharmed, so as he's usually wearing trousers and long sleeves- partly because he gets cold easily, but partly to cover them up- most people have no idea how scarred he is. They're often shocked when they see more of his bare skin.

I think for me, I find a lot of appeal in spider man media that focuses more on the people than the spectacle. I like the trilogy in large part because it’s about Peter, not spider man, is the easiest way I can put it. Also Harry fascinates me.

And I’m sure it’ll come as such a massive shock, but I like non conventional horror media. And raimi is a horror director who occasionally infused horror elements into the movies. I think this kicks ass and it appeals to me massively.

It's really good because it gives them a real, grounded foundation to work from, more than just... one sided helping Nagito overcome his whole everything he's gotta deal with postgame. Which is a LOT. Because like youre saying Vi-enti, he rly was seeing himself as like. A stepping stone. Desperately wanting to be a part of something larger and dehumanizing himself over it. Sonia already part of something larger but still not... fully treated as a person. Seeing herself only as the role she must play for the betterment of society.

Postgame, learning to finally process that, to just be enough as they are, and helping each other through it? It's so good.

I could also see them bonding a bit over, like... Sonia is pretty naturally well-read, and Nagito strikes me as someone who's fond of reading as well (theres FTE and Island Mode moments i can point at to support this) and they're both a little morbid, and while I'm sure Sonia's interest in serial killers and such has been tempered by... obvious events... and Nagito has actual serial killer related trauma, but he doesn't seem to be too scared by occult type things and ghosts, so Junko hauntings aside, those might be avenues of bonding over things that aren't just tragedy.

Yeah! Yess you understand! Nagito doesn't really mean to be offputting, but he is so often because he pedestals people so much he'll dig a hole for himself to be beneath them. But he really does long for actual connections. His luck and his FTD have fucked him over so bad when it comes to interpersonal relationships bc on one hand bad things happen to people around him so forming genuine connections is incredibly anxiety inducing for him, and on the other he just says things because his brain to mouth filter is broken.

Sonia and Komaeda getting along well enough to room together is so good honestly. Even if its mostly bc she takes no shit, Komaeda was still like the only person to stand up for her when Teruteru was trying to get frisky about her naiveté in the prologue/ch1.

I kind of suspect she was acting more unknowing than she really was then, to suit her role as a princess, but he had no way of knowing that then. Plus, if she was aware then, it might be easier for her to recognize the side of him that isn't all hope n murder? Since outside of the killing game he's pretty polite (if self effacing) and generally not down for creepy behavior.

If you've got any more thoughts on these two's interactions postgame, I'd love to hear.

I dont think it's perfect by any means (nothing on the ship is!) but its proooobably the best quick-solution scenario?

Hmmmm this is a hard choice.

I am such a sucker for the home recordings.I love how raw and vulnerable and emotional he sounds when he's just singing for himself and a few friends, And i've listened to the produced version of this song a bunch because I like to try to live in the sixties and I really love how pair down and simple and slow Elvis is here. I do wish he had recorded a studio version of this though.

I didn't like this song that much at first, but it grew on me listening to the Potluck FTD and now I'm a sucker for it.

I originally made a draft of this post with all film soundtrack songs that I think get over looked. If you know me, you know I'm always raging against the narrative that Elvis goes to Hollywood during the 60s and wastes his time on shitty movies. This was actually why I started writing fan fic. His work in Hollywood is so underappreciated, and I will fight a thousand fan boy Guralnicks and Baz Luhrman's and Pierre Adidge sand Robert Abels and MM idiots and even Elvis himself on this. Anyway, I love the Frankie and Johnny soundtrack and this song is abop about vaginas that is fun as fuck. So there.

my sister finally watched the Wilbur Soot VOD so I finally could talk to her about it and we got to this scene here:

and I mentioned the symbolism aspect of it and couldn't remember it exactly so I looked it up and holy shit there is a lot! I'm gonna put a 'read more' tag since there is a lot here, so click you want an in-depth dive into my favorite part about the dsmp: Accidental Symbolism

So you want to know more! Awesome! I had a lot of fun researching this! Let's get started!

So the Lily of the Valley has a lot of meanings.

1. FTD, a flower shop, puts in number one on their apology flower list and says:

"Lily of the valley is the best apology flower if you don’t know how to apologize to someone you hurt. This delicate white flower represents rebirth, which can be the result of a broken relationship if your apology is received well. It can express the start of a new chapter in the relationship and leave the past behind."

So yeah, perfect for c!Wilbur at this moment. He wants to apologize to those he's hurt, yet he doesn't apologize to Tommy. Probably cause he doesn't know how or is ready yet to confront their relationship. It also represents Rebirth, as in "starting new chapters, and leaving the past behind," which Wilbur all wants to do.

2. FTD also has more facts here, which include:

In Victorian Times, the Lily of the Valley represents a "Return to Happiness" (fitting for the Wilbur, and crimeboys, lore rn) and can also see as a sign of humility in modern times, which is again fitting because truly apologizing to everyone Wilbur hurt takes a lot of humility, I'd say.

3. According to FunnyHowFlowersDoThat, here, they say:

"This flower symbolizes absolute purity, youth, sincerity, and discretion. But most importantly, it symbolizes happiness."

Youth reminds me of Tommy, cause obviously, he's 'the child' and Wilbur's younger brother, so him standing there matches that. Sincerity for, again, the apologies. Discretion and purity don't really have a match here that I can clearly define, tbh.

4. So, that's all well and good but then I thought: Kristin picked the flower. Kristin. The Goddess of Death. When she did that, everyone was talking about the symbolism of it as it connects to "rebirth", since that feels more connected to Death here. And yeah, sure, but also-

Kristin picked that. Her being the goddess of death connects her to Wilbur and Tommy, as both died and got revived. But also, since she's married to Phil there's a family element there. She's probably Wilbur's mom, idk the canon family tree at this point but I think the fridge was de-canonized when Kristin joined in on lore (if so-RIP Samsung Smart Refridgerator you will be missed), but at the least, she's his step-mom (?) since she's married to Phil, Wilbur's dad. 5. Also, according to FTD here, it also symbolizes "The fragrant white flowers are often associated with traditional feminine values such as motherhood, purity, chastity, and sweetness." This is actually why, fun fact, it's the birth month flower of May, the month with mother's day in it. But also-MOTHERHOOD. HOW. HOW DID SHE MANAGE THAT. MUMZA YOU GENIUS. I don't really care for the other three reasons, I saw that and just-How. How. I'm baffled this was all accidental!

(September 2022 edit for clarity) I found it funny that these flowers represent the second coming of Christ, a deity who is prophesized to return to the mortal realm/earth at some point. Kristin, a fictional goddess of Death, is trying to return to the mortal realm, and in her first lore stream, we see one of their attempts live where she ends her visit by picking the flower I'm talking about here.

BACK TO MORE SERIOUS CONNECTIONS: I've got two more

6. symbolsage, here, says mostly the same thing as every other page, like happiness and chastity, but it also adds "trustworthiness", which is something Wilbur is struggling with regaining.

7. flower-meanings, here, also says similar things, but also notes that because the flower is poisonous, it is popular at funerals which gives it meanings like sadness or pain due to loss or death (grief). Which, is just another death connection between Crimeboys and the flower and death.

So those are my seven flower meaning/lore/symbolism connections between the Lily of the Valley and crimeboys. I have a bunch of other random flower facts I'll probably either make a part two for or reblog this with because I didn't go down a rabbit hole for this knowledge to die out. I'm info-dumping later baby!

But also- HOW WAS THIS ON ACCIDENT? HOLY FUCKING SHIT HOW?

Like, watching the scene the above screenshot is from. Watching the entire part where Wilbur is at Phil's and talking about how he needs to apologize and he opens the door and Tommy stands there-his brother who he hurt so much, and we the audience thinks he's going to apologize but he brushes past him to go to Technoblade and apologize. Leaves Tommy with Phil, and later returns to talk to Phil but still does not apologize after yet another bait and switch moment. It's very well written. 10/10.

But Tommy, while standing in the open doorway, ends up under the flower. The Lily of the Valley. Lore wise, its only significance is Kristin randomly (which knowing the flower meanings just kills me cause she could not have gotten a better flower) grabbing it as a present for Phil when she possessed him, but only Phil knows that. It's PURE coincidence it's above the door. It's PURE coincidence that I can extrapolate all that meaning from it, much less meanings that MATCH THE LORE AND CHARACTERS EVEN REMOTELY.

Yeah, flower language changes and fluctuates depending on culture and timeframe, so she could have picked a fucking tulip and probably stumbled upon meaningful lore implications, but just- the is so much accidental symbolism here that FITS unreasonably well that this is just unfair that this is not on purpose and no genius in the background planted that random flower, lucky that it was in Minecraft in the first place, told Kristin to pick it on a whim, and the for Phil to hang it for Tommy to later stand under and look at during this specific lore stream. Nope! That's all PURE FUCKING COINCIDENCE. AMAZING.

(btw I got curious as I do and that offhand tulip comment- yeah, someone could make lore/character implications. Minecraft tulips come in pink, orange, white, and red. Red=love, Pink=caring and good wishes, Orange=a sense of understanding and appreciation between two people, usually in a relationship. All three could be cute "messages" between Kristin and Phil. No connection to crimeboys, really-BUT- White=claim worthiness or to send a message of forgiveness=Wilbur and Tommy. Can't escape it.)
