"You got any idea what Asher'd want for his birthday?" Uly asks his best friend's sister when she seemed less busy than when he had arrived. Though the actual day was a couple of weeks out, he was a bad gift-giver by virtue of usually not caring enough to even try -- but this was an exception.

"Alright now," Ziggy says, pleased with effort as opposed to any of the other adjectives that could have been conjured by his artistic attempt.

( He still can't decide himself whether it was hideous or abstract. )

"That is a fantastic idea," He acknowledges, leaving his pumpkin unattended so he could go fetch the reddest red that was available along with a brush to save his hands from wearing the same.

Before he starts his now-murder scene, he lifts his wine glass to his lips to take a swig from it, admiring the woman's own efforts while he did so.

"Has yours ever had a homicidal streak? Maybe it's a suspect in Pumpi Lapone's untimely demise."

Even if it was maybe geared towards being a family-friendly activity to do with kids, Valeria was all too happy to carve a pumpkin while sipping a glass of wine- even if she wasn't very good at it. Maybe she'd convince Asher to come and do it with her next weekend so he could do more of the labor. As she took a sip of her wine she heard the comment then and looked over, even tilting her head to the side a bit as she looked the pumpkin over. "It's giving....effort?" She offered with a laugh. "I for one happen to like the wonky-looking ones anyways. The perfect ones always look fake. Maybe go grab some painting stuff next and splatter it with red and say it's a pumpkin murder victim?"

Santiago exhaled a sigh of relief once he had ushered the last lingering barfly from the pub and pulled the inside door bolt closed to prevent any wanderers from chancing an appearance.

( Any lights on at Four Leaf drew in his most prolific regulars like moths to a Guinness dispensing flame. )

"That's the last of them," He says as he turns to face Val, "I hope."

Seamus hadn't taken the hint when he had started stacking stools on tables, remaining glued to his own at the bar instead. He knew the Irishman well enough to know he didn't set out to cause trouble but the Jameson and his fiery nature could be a volatile mix.

"Some nights Seamy thinks closing time's a negotiation," He explains as he makes his way behind the bar to get started on his least favorite post close task -- cleaning the draft drip tray.

"I was going for a dragon shaped mug but I think it looks more deformed dog.... Something."

Reggie tilts his head at his unfortunate creation, now thinking that it may not be salvageable by the paint he had in mind.

"I'm no Picasso or whatever," Valeria started, taking a sip of her wine as she looked at her own attempted clay tray, "but...what exactly is that supposed to be?"

🫂 PEOPLE HUGGING — generally speaking, do you feel very supported by the people in your life? how strong and cohesive is your support system, if you have one? do you often feel like you're at the front of the line or pushed to the side by the people in your life?

"Yeah, for sure! I feel like I'm always near the top of their lists. Not in an 'I'm number one' kind of way, but if I need something, they're there. Just like I'm there for them. My sister is my longest standing support system, she practically raised me, and she's never given up on me through all the highs and lows of our family. Gillian pushes and motivates me to be and do the best I ever can. She's made me feel so loved.

And sure, I've only known Uly for a little over a year, but he's got my back more than anyone ever has in my life. Everyone's gotta get a ride or die like him. I also have Leo, who's there to cheer me up on a bad day, and whether Angel likes it or not, he is my go-to when I'm having any house issues. I'm very lucky."

send BLINDSIDED for a scene from my muse's past in which they were betrayed or shocked by what someone did

Every star in the Arizona night sky is blinding. Shining and twinkling outside Asher’s bedroom window when Bruno kneels down to hush and wipe his nose with a tissue.

Another fight exploded between his parents. His mother came home with Valeria, who looked as if her world split in half. His sister, who never cracked under any pressure, shared a look with Bruno that Ash couldn’t decipher, but when the announcement of a pregnancy came to light, shit hit the fan.

Their father didn’t respond well when their mother insisted he get back into the workforce. Her income as a waitress at the diner wouldn’t cover it, and maternity leave was nonexistent to service workers. He told her to stop nagging him.

Then Bruno added fire into it when he told their mother it was a selfish thing to even consider keeping it when they could barely keep their heads above water.

Asher didn’t get that, because he could swim. Very well, actually. He hasn’t worn swimmies since he was three.

But the thing is, Ash has been crying all night. All hot snot and tears until it’s turned into subtle sniffling with the occasional hiccup. Bruno assures him, through all the mentions of sleeping in a car or empty bellies, he will take care of Asher. It takes a lot to settle him to fall asleep, but he eventually does.

When he wakes the next morning, Bruno’s bed is empty and his bag is gone. There’s another argument that disturbs the morning peace, and when Ash emerges, it’s in time to see the proud lines of his brother’s back disappear out of the slamming screen door.

Bruno doesn’t come back.

"I keep saying I'll get one of those MagSafe ones, you know that just go--" He uses his palm as a stand in for the Apple issue one he's speaking of, making a suction cup sound as he presses the back of his phone to his hand as seamlessly as he assumes they do.

"I haven't been able to justify that price to myself yet though, especially when this bad boy costs 0 dollars." He flicks his charger wire before he's reaching for the untouched pretzels to slide them to her, "Have at 'em. I get the most intense craving for these crisps called bacon fries from London whenever I drink beer and pretzels just don't cut for me."

Valeria had quickly become a regular at the reef bar, always enjoying a space where the drinks were decently priced and the crowds never got too rowdy since the drunken man-children had pool tables and darts to play with. Like now, she'd ordered herself a beer and watched a riveting game of pool with someone nearly falling over himself just trying to line up a shot and Val moved to the barstools to take a seat, glancing over when she heard the comment. "Nah, you're fine. Actually," She paused, grabbing her purse and rummaging around for a second before she pulled out her phone- already connected to a portable charger. "You should get yourself one of these, truly a game changer. I will take that bowl of pretzels though if you're not eating it."

Try as he may to keep a hold of the cynicism that defined him, hearing from a third-party that he mattered to someone who mattered to him as much as Asher did brought a sense of reassurance to him that he would never seek out himself. People could say anything to your face and only half-mean, it's what was said when out of earshot that told him more.

"Hope he's not bigged me up too much in that case."

The move to Aurora Bay surprised him -- mostly because time had dulled his own view of the place -- but he supposed that's what actual families did.

( Showed up for one another. )

"It's aight, depending on the day." And the company, but if he started on all the folks he didn't fuck with that resided within the town limits, they would be there until closing. Her comment about seeing more of her, a hint of a smirk dawns on his features. "Wouldn't have any complaints about that."

He tosses the dish cloth he had been using to clear the vodka and cran spillage that had occurred one stool over from her while he had been listening, lingering in the conversation on his side of the bar.

"You been looking for work then?"

"And miss out on that expression? Absolutely not." Valeria was grinning still, happy to watch as the look on his face shifted and he seemingly relaxed right before her eyes- and hers in turn softened as well when Uly spoke of her brother. "That's good to hear. According to Ash you've become pretty important to him here so that just made me want to meet you all the more."

The smile stayed on Valeria's face then when he not only passed her the drink but comped it as well and she nodded, a please little hum escaping her by the first sip. "For the foreseeable future, actually. I moved here not too long ago and have settled in pretty well. I figured if it's enough to keep my brother's attention then it must be a pretty solid place to live so.." She trailed off with a shrug. "Expect to see more of me, handsome."

"That you are," Santi concurs, a statement of fact that only needed to be verified by a look at her. A scoff follows at her mention of mascara for him, shaking his head as he diverts the bottle to the glass intended for Val and pours her a similar measure, "The phrase lipstick on a pig is suddenly coming to mind."

He takes the rag from her after he replaces the cap and leaves it near the register behind him while the bottle remains on the bartop in case either of them felt compelled for a second serving.

"Has it really been almost a year? Goddamn," He says after he's swallowed a swig of his drink, the days and weeks blurring together with such a ferocity that he would have guessed it was somewhere around the six month mark.

( Showed how much attention he had been paying to anything outside of his own woes. )

"You've been a great addition," He he compliments, his glass held up in the air to signify a cheers, "We're very enriched to have you. I hope you'll be sticking around a while."

"It helps that I'm pretty." She countered, playfully batting her eyelashes at him, "Maybe we gotta get you some mascara or something and you could get some tips from petulant patrons too."

As she said it Valeria already took over in finishing up the cleaning, genuinely not minding it since it was so embedded into her- cleaning taking care of things. She'd been doing this her whole life, to the point that it was almost a comfort. "Nah."

She'd finished wiping down the bar and resetting everything behind before she moved back to her boss, passing over the rag in exchange for her glass. "You know, it's coming up on one year since I started working here. Which means it's been a year since moving here, starting my life over--enriching yours with my phenomenal presence.."

"Is he tipping you at all? You must have an actual four leaf-clover for that sort of luck."

He's glad to hear the man had heeded his perpetual warnings to some degree, his penchant for trying to evade his tab and handing out any cash seemingly reserved for just the bar owner and not the rest of the staff. Santiago's been doing the same dance with him from back when Murphy was at the helm, finding the old devil to be harmless even though he could be irritating.

Her suggestion and his to-do are no competition for one another, turning to reach for the Jameson rather than the cloth as he complies with the sound of two tumbler glasses being placed on the bar top.

"Be a shame not to, so they say," He pours himself a measure and a half with no added frills, holding the bottle in wait for confirmation of her preference to repeat the same with hers, "Do you want ice?"

Valeria never minded working closing shifts since she actually liked when it was quiet at night and less chaotic--even if it meant working the busiest time in the day with the dinner rush. She also didn't mind it since she had not much else to do either but go to her empty little house and spend the night alone. So when her boss spoke up she just hummed, glancing over to him from over her shoulder as she wiped down a table. "I'll happily lock the door in someone's face if they try and roll in after hours."

Finishing up the last table, she pocketed the rag into her little apron and went over to the bar, playfully rolling her eyes as she looked over to the man still nursing his drink at the other end. "Hey, at least he always tips well?" She offered with a laugh before she moved to where Santi was and gave him a nudge, "I got this. And since the bottle of Jameson is still out, do youuu maybe wanna get us a drink?" Val shot him a little grin, hoping to catch him in a good mood so he'd be down for a couple drinks since it did help the end of the night go by a bit easier.

"Hoping that Ash won't lose something is like hoping for miracles, never going to fucking happen."

By his best friend's second lost phone in a short timespan, Uly had learned to know better than expect that anything that wasn't secured to his person wouldn't end up vanishing without a trace.

"I'd owe you one if you could, I want to make sure I get him something sick."

He wanted him to have a good birthday in general, but there was a lingering guilt that still existed within him from their fight in spring and the way he had acted unduly.

"A day apart? I think I would have been a little asshole about it if I had a little sib that was born on my birthday," He realises once he says it that he had made it sound like he had no siblings, so he corrects as simply as he can about something that was far from simple to explain, "I got a sister but she's older than me and we found out the other existed a year ago. I don't actually know when her birthday is now that I think about it, that probably automatically makes me a shit brother."

With some down time at work, Valeria got herself a glass of coke and sat across the Uly, figuring she could spare a few minutes. "Honestly? I'm not sure." She told him with a laugh even as she shook her head at herself. "Maybe a new video game or a vape that he won't lose or break in five minutes?" she offered teasingly. "I can try and wrangle an answer out of him though and float you some options." Least she could do for the guy she knew was her brother's best friend. "You know, him and I almost shared a birthday? We're a day apart, so little eight year old me joked that he was my birthday present when he was born."

"Oh shit, you should have led with that." Uly's attitude shifts at the mention of Asher and the clarity on who she was to him, some of the disinterest present when he was stood on his side of the bar dissipating.

"Asher's my boy."

He was the sole soul who had never managed to end up on Uly's bad side, which gave him some hope that getting to know new people wasn't ultimately a complete waste of time.

"On me," He says of the finished double tequila sunrise he places in front of her, certain Bora's pockets could survive the gesture. "You in town long?"

Valeria smiled at the confusion on the man's face (and his subsequent words) since it meant she guessed correctly. She allowed herself a moment to give him a quick look over then, thinking about what Asher had told her of this boy and how much he loved him. Val was glad for that too, glad that he'd found friends and people to love and people to have in his life in general after the life they'd led back in Arizona. She only ever wanted good for her baby brother.

"I've heard stupider." She told him with a little shrug before she held her out in greeting, the same amused smile still on her face. "I'm Valeria. I believe you may be a teeny bit familiar with my brother? Asher."
