It’s been a minute since I did one of these, but in a year that started with the death of a legend , and saw music infrastructure fracture even further into hyper-niche corners, I found myself more engaged than I’ve been in a while with new rap. Maybe the sheer impossibility of staying on top of everything freed me up to just hear what I hear and rock with what I like, or maybe I just finally burnt myself out playing Starlito tapes on repeat and needed something to switch it up with, but picking 50 was actually kinda tricky. Who knew?

there’s a particular pang in the center of jake’s chest, one he’s so used to by now that he barely feels it anymore, as he looks down at the box before him. tightly sealed, the corners of the cardboard softened by over a decade’s worth of being banged around  —  it feels STRANGE, if he thinks about it too hard, that this box is older than his friendship with delilah. the dust swirling into the air as he opens it is expected, he doesn’t go through this era of his life often, and it does nothing to deter him from what he’s after. he shuffles a few things aside  (  a stuffed purple octopus he can almost remember the hue of, a copy of ‘the princess bride’, identical but much more well loved than the one on his bookshelf, a vhs tape of ‘jusassic park’ with a crack in the casing  )  before he finds it:
a stack of letters. the first two are addressed in jake’s messy scrawl, sealed and stamped — with ‘ RETURN TO SENDER ’  emblazoned across the front. after that, they have no address, no stamp, no intention to be sent nor known destination to be sent to, just the soul of a heartbreakingly lonely teenage boy, desperately missing his best friend, poured out onto paper and sealed up in envelopes he’d had no idea where to send.
he could sort through them, he thinks, he probably should, there are a few letters whose only topic is despair, helplessness, loneliness, fear, but that’s not the point of this gift. this gift is so she knows he never FORGOT, never wanted to lose her, had ached for her companionship above all else for so long.
he closes the box, slides it back to its permanent place in the back of his closet, and takes the stack to the counter. there, he places a new envelope on the top, this one lilac if delilah is to be believed, labelled ‘jemma’ in fresh ink, and ties them all securely together with ribbon. he’s got a much more appropriate gift for the party their friends have planned  —  an apron embroidered with the front porch coffeehouse logo, several chemical formulas for coffee, and the phrase  ‘coffee genius’  —  and plans to catch her afterward to give her, but there’s no reason for it not to look nice.
he only hopes it makes up for years of absence.   /   @analyticallyminded

Songs From 2019 (one per artist)
Another mixed bag of stuff i either enjoyed a lot, thought was excellent or interesting (regardless of taste… sort of), emerging artists to maybe look out for, and generally music that for whatever reason connected with me in some way, including the odd earworm i just couldn’t shake. Some artists are left off just to vary a little more from some other popular lists. Hope you enjoy some of this too and find something new to be taken by. Please do buy their music if you can and hopefully from a local independent record store if possible to support their work. There’s a spotify playlist (below) for easier listening but I’ve also posted a few links to extra things on some of them if you want to check them out.  Spotify:

Christmas with the Kranks (2004)
I know it might be hard to believe, but last night was the first time I've ever seen this movie. Even more controversial, I'm not really a fan of Tim Allen. But this movie is exactly what I would expect with him as a lead.
If you still haven't seen it either, Luther Krank (Tim Allen) and his wife Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis) are skipping Christmas because their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) joined the Peace Corps and got sent to Peru. By the way, Luther says the Peace Corps wouldn't send her somewhere dangerous- this is false. They 100% would. Anyway, so Luther convinces Nora that since they'll be miserable without Blair, they should go on a cruise instead. And since Christmas is normally such a big deal for them, they should abstain from anything Christmas related altogether. But nobody can convince me that Nora didn't buy a ton of gifts for Blair at least. The Kranks live in a modern day Pleasantville so everybody is losing it when they hear about skipping Christmas. Literally. The printer who does Christmas cards, the boy scouts, the police, and all the neighbors are deeply upset. Nora would rather go through the motions because she doesn't want to upset everyone, especially not Vic Frohmeyer (Dan Aykroyd). He's the most influential person in the neighborhood. Vic starts off trying to understand and be civil- he just wants the Kranks to put up the 7 ft tall light-up Frosty on the roof like everybody else. Luther refuses. So, the neighborhood kids, led by Spike Frohmeyer (Erik Per Sullivan), protest out front yelling "Free Frosty!" Across the street from the Kranks lives Walt Scheel (M. Emmet Walsh) and Bev Scheel (Elizabeth Franz). Walt and Luther openly dislike each other, but everybody is sweet to Bev, whose cancer has come back.
On Christmas Eve, while Luther and Nora are packing, they get a call that Blair is surprising them. She's coming home for Christmas! And she's bring her boyfriend, Enrique (René Lavan), who wants to propose. Blair is so excited to show Enrique their Christmas traditions. Nora loses her shit as soon as she gets off the phone because now she has to throw everything together for the Christmas Eve Party that night and decorate the house and find people to attend the party and never let Blair find out about the cruise. Luther begrudgingly helps, but he can't find a tree. He asks a neighbor, Wes Trogden (Mark Christopher Lawrence), to borrow his because his family is going out of town and won't be back until after Christmas. Wes agrees and leaves, but a neighbor calls the cops. Officer Salino (Cheech Marin) and Officer Treen (Jake Busey) arrest Luther for robbery, but Spike shows them that he was helping Luther and they had a key. After several failures trying to pull it off on their own, Vic rallies the neighborhood to help the Kranks before Blair gets back. The officers go to the airport to pick them up and stall. Marty (Austin Pendleton), a man who knows everybody but nobody recognizes, finds the magical honey baked ham that is Blair's favorite. Frankly it sounds disgusting to me. Anyway, they pull it off, Blair comes home and doesn't know anything was amiss. Nora is very appreciative, but Luther is still having some trouble with not going on the cruise. Because Luther is a dick. After shunning himself to the kitchen, he realizes the Scheel's didn't join the party. It started snowing, and Bev can't be out in that. I thought he was going to move the party to their house so that they would still have company on Christmas, but he did not. He gave them the cruise tickets, because hey, you're gonna be alone on Christmas anyway, why not be on a boat? And while I still don't like Luther or his general assholeishness, Nora and Blair are aslo way too excited all the time. And what 23 year old still calls her parents "mommy and daddy"?
Overall, I give it 2 stars because I like Dan Aykroyd. Otherwise, it would be 1.

The Download: Russia is spreading misinformation about chemical weapons in Ukraine
This is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology.
Western officials are increasingly worried that Russia is preparing to use chemical weapons to attack Ukraine, then spread disinformation that the attack came from the Ukrainians themselves. On NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ program yesterday, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that Russia’s accusations that the West is preparing to launch chemical attacks are a “good tell that they may be on the cusp of doing it themselves.”
Russia is making false claims that Ukraine is running chemical weapons labs with US assistance, according to a statement by Ned Price, a spokesperson for the US State Department. These conspiracy theories are then being repeated by Chinese officials.
NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag yesterday that any Russian chemical weapons attack would constitute a war crime.
Officials from the US and China are set to meet in Rome today as part of diplomatic efforts to head off growing tensions between the two countries linked to events in Ukraine. Talks between Russia and Ukraine are also due to resume today, with both sides expressing cautious hopes of progress.
Tensions between Russia and NATO escalated over the weekend after Russia launched a barrage of attacks against a military base in Ukraine that’s located just 11 miles from the Polish border, killing at least 35 people. Poland is a member of NATO, raising fears the conflict could spread beyond Ukraine.
The war on the ground is inevitably mirrored and accompanied by a fierce battle over the information people see online. The White House briefed TikTok stars about the war last week, in a nod to the significant role the platform has been playing throughout the war so far.
The information getting through to Russians is increasingly tightly controlled and filtered amid a broad crackdown on dissent inside the country. A block on Instagram comes into force today, and Facebook and Twitter have been cut off in Russia too.
In the West, many tech platforms are giving up on the illusion of neutrality. Facebook has lifted its ban on calls for violence in the case of Russian soldiers, and even DuckDuckGo, which has previously promoted itself as apolitical and neutral, has announced it will start downranking sites associated with Russian disinformation (a decision that provoked a swift backlash from the far-right.)
