does anyone else feel like gray is kinda... flat?

like he feels like a DM npc in a dnd party, like everything he does is reactionary, like he doesn't exist unless there's a conflict? He's a character for others to bounce off of, and nothing else.

I legitimately cannot remember any characters arcs of his besides galuna island, and the weird ice demon/silver stuff that I never really understood.

Every time it seems like he might get character development, mashima pulls out the "he's going to cast ice shell" and then nastu or one of the others just says the same, "no, I won't let you" speech. And it's like??? Dude this lost it's effect after the first time, we know you're not going to kill off a main character, and you aren't even going to explore the implications of gray constantly trying to make a martyr out of himself either

and like his relations to leon and ultear just feel kinda wasted? like come on, family is a big theme for fairy tail, let him reconcile with his adoptive siblings, let them grieve, let them grow, I want to them heal

and i'm not even going to start on him and juvia, because god I hate their relationship, their romance ruined both their characters in canon

I could also go on a rant about how I don't like either gray or erza's parent(s) being both alive and evil, but I've already made this post long enough
