Protean, Yexhul

[This monster is picking up a plot thread I laid down years ago: how to introduce slaadi into the Pathfinder cosmology. It also continues me use of anagrams as the namesakes of proteans. This one is fairly short, so I suspect it's going to be one of the more solvable ones.]

Protean, Yexhul CR 16 CN Outsider (extraplanar) This serpentine creature has four arms, each ending in a clawed hand. Instead of a single head, a riot of dozens of small necks and heads grow from its shoulders like the branches of a great tree. The scales of its chest have eyespots, like the feathers of a peacock.

Yexhuls are the proteans that observe and meddle with animal evolution. Yexhuls push animals in new directions, both by introducing organisms into new habitats and by physically altering organisms, taking what is typically a slow and orderly process and interjecting sometimes bizarre flights of fancy. The touch of a yexhil can alter the abilities of an organism permanently, and the transformations they imbue are heritable. A number of the magical beasts found on Material worlds, especially those that are incongruous hybrids of two animals, are yexhul creations.

No two fights with a yexhul are likely to progress the same way, as these creatures can alter their bodies on the fly. They also have an experimental approach to violence, changing their abilities in different ways for different fights, and summoning different animals to assist them in combat. Although they have many heads, a yexhul can only bite a single target at once, striking with all of their jaws simultaneously (unless it gives itself more bite attacks with its acclimation ability). If their enemies are gaining the upper hand, a yexhul will turn them into something harmless with baleful polymorph, or use primal regression to disable their ability to cast spells.

Most other types of proteans distrust yexhuls, as they were the creators of the Spawning Stone. That continent-sized chunk of reality brought to the Maelstrom was an enormous experiment in the survival of the fittest, and its “fittest”, the slaadi, swiftly escaped the Spawning Stone and eventually the Maelstrom entirely, running amok through the planes. Yexhuls, for their part, consider the slaadi a resounding success, and they are among the proteans more likely to work with slaadi than against them. Annunaki are a species that have a great dislike for yexhuls, and try to exterminate them when their paths cross.

One of the great philosophical debates among yexhuls concerns domestication.  Some yexhuls consider it a natural outgrowth of evolution, and use their abilities to make unusual species more likely to associate with humanoids and start the process of becoming domesticated. Other yexhuls consider artificial selection by any hands other than their own to be a grave insult. Some even “un-domesticate” animals, rendering livestock and pets aggressive and uncontrollable or helping feral populations adapt better to the wild. Other proteans encourage this infighting, as it keeps the yexhuls from conducting any more experiments as far-reaching as the Spawning Stone.

Special Abilities Acclimation (Su) A yexhul can alter its physical traits on the fly. It has a number of evolution points equal to 1/3 its Hit Dice, which it can spend on any evolution as if it were a summoner’s eidolon. It may take any evolution legal for a serpentine shape, and treats its Hit Dice as its summoner level for the purpose of qualifying for evolutions. A yexhul can change its acclimations by taking 1 full round, and can carry them over into its alternate forms with change shape if it so desires. Change Shape (Su) A yexhul may change shape at will, but does not heal when it reverts to its normal form. Probing Bite (Ex) The many heads of a yexhul strike simultaneously, but reach around obstacles. A yexhul’s bite ignores any cover short of total cover, as well as ignoring shield bonuses to Armor Class. Specialization (Su) As a standard action, a yexhul may touch a creature to alter its ability scores. An unwilling creature can resist this with a DC 26 Fortitude save. The creature touched gains a +6 bonus to one of its ability scores, but a -2 penalty to two of its other ability scores, as chosen by the yexhul. This is an instantaneous effect, and can only be removed with a break enchantment, limited wish, wish or miracle spell. This bonus is passed on to this creature’s offspring. If a creature’s Intelligence is raised above 3, it gains the ability to speak and understand one language of the yexhul’s choice (typically Protean). These penalties cannot lower a creature’s ability scores below 1. A creature that successfully saves is immune to the specialization of that yexhul for the next 24 hours. No creature can be specialized in this way more than once simultaneously. This is a polymorph effect, and the save DC is Charisma based. Wild Empathy (Ex) A yexhul can use wild empathy as a druid with a level equal to its Hit Dice.

And I'm over here with my personal lore for my Merlin, Celestino, of him actually attending most of the parties Dionel hosted back then when my boi was in his Archon days like, '??? Celestino: Did you not see me there??'

Then Merlin'll be presented with two options either you get to (Support Dionel) or (Support Scarlita)

Of course, my Cel being a daddy's boi immediately sides with him

"IGOR" - Album Review

In 2019, Tyler, The Creator released his 5th album, IGOR. I will admit, I only listened to it last year, but I just wanted to share my opinion on the album, as it is now one of my top 5 albums of all time. I'm just gonna go right ahead and show my ranking of each song (my favourites in order):

"ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?" - 9.5/10

"NEW MAGIC WAND" - 9/10

Honestly, in my opinion, there aren't really any bad songs on this album. All of the transitions are seamless, and each song has an amazing mood, topped off with so much emotion. Overall, IGOR was a breathtaking album (pun-intended since tyler has asthma 💀), with story also being perfectly paced through the 12 tracks.

Overall, I give IGOR: 9/10

"You did WHAT!"

"Do not yell at me, Aik. You heard me, I'm starting clone attempt four," Membrane replied calmly. "I'm on track to wake him up in September."

"Are you insane!" Aik spat. "I'm still working on the brain implants! I haven't gotten to develop the formula for the bone filler, I need to run tests on the cartilage cage-"

"And you have a year to do that," Membrane said.

"Ugghhhh! Would it kill you to wait til the implants are done before making another one? You're just going to hurt him!" Aik grumbled, crossing his arms.

"I thought you completed everything for Cor," Membrane prodded.

"I completed a formula that would help keep him alive until I could figure out the rest. Not keep him alive long term," Aik growled.

"Then I'll use that until you finish the rest," Membrane said.

Aik blinked. "What?"

"That updated oxygen transfusion liquid you designed? It'll be twice as effective. And the monitoring system with the brain activity addition, it'll be able to wake the clone before he would die," Membrane said.

"What about the internal bleeding?" Aik asked.

"I had a solution to that with Bel. Cor reacted well to it. Remember, those purple injections?" Membrane replied.

"... the WHAT??" Aik hissed. "That burns them! You were burning Cor the entire time??"

"Stop being dramatic, Bel just didn't like needles," Membrane said.

"You idiot!"

"Aik Nil Membrane, do NOT talk to your father like that!" Membrane snapped.

"You are NOT my father!" Aik spat.

"What the hell?? Of course I am!" Membrane growled.

"No, I don't want you to be! I don't want a father, I don't want you! You're not mine!" Aik snarled.

"That's it, go to your room!" Membrane ordered.

Aik stifled an angry screech and stomped off to the white room. He growled and curled up in the corner furthest from the door, grabbing a small package from his shelf on the way.

It was a yellow envelope Membrane let him have, and inside, tightly folded and hidden safely were the two shirts. One orange, one purple.

Aik hissed at the thought of having to add a third shirt to the collection. He couldn't. He couldn't do it. If this one was going to die too, he had to try not to get attached. Or the pain of a third one dying might kill him too.

He didn't take anything out of the package, just pressed it against his chest and flopped over on the soft ground, taking deep, slow, calming breaths.

Was this just going to be his life? Trapped here, watching the only people he cared about die, again and again? When was it going to end…

It was all Membrane's fault.

<September 4th, 2004>

Aik was just short of nine years old. Against his wishes, Membrane had continued to work on clone attempt four.

Aik was rarely kept in a cage this time. But Membrane also hardly ever allowed him near the canister.

Aik did all the work he could on the implants the clone would need, but Membrane didn't help him, too focused on finishing the clone, so they weren't complete when it was time to wake the newest infant up.

Aik watched the procedure, attempting to ignore all of the emotions going through his head. The fear, the pain, conflicting with hope and excitement. "What's this one's name?"

"Dib Igor Membrane," Membrane replied.

"Dib… okay," Aik sighed. He took note of this infant's hair scythe being full straight.

The canister was drained and Membrane plucked the newest infant out, going through the same routine of massaging his chest to help him take his first breaths. The canister refilled with Aik's updated substance as Membrane focused on the disoriented clone.

"Welcome to life, young Dib," Membrane said to the small boy.

Once breathing normally, Dib looked around, eyes wide with fascination. His eyes eventually landed on Aik and he stared, curious.

Aik had to bite his tongue and look away. He had decided to not get attached to this one, right? He had to try for his own sanity. Even though according to the professor, he didn't have any. Before Membrane took the picture this time, Aik went back to the white room to press his head against a wall. Membrane didn't even notice.

About an hour later, Aik came back to check on the clone. He couldn't help it. He found Dib back in the canister, fully submerged in Aik's updated substance, calm and awake.

"Hey, that's not how you were supposed to use it! Fully submerged?? He'll choke!" Aik spat at Membrane.

"The brain monitor you made will alert me if he starts to choke, this will make him less likely to half his lungs collapse," Membrane replied.

"You're misusing my designs," Aik growled.

"You asked me to implement them, so I am," Membrane said with a shrug.

Aik grumbled under his breath and approached Dib in the canister. The infant was awake, but made sluggish by being fully submerged. He seemed sleepy and unfocused. Like he couldn't hear or see his surroundings.

No, don't get attached. Aik tried to remind himself, but he was already failing. He quickly went back to the white room before Membrane could try to speak to him again. But even then, he only stayed there for a few more minutes before leaving again and going over to a computer Membrane had allowed him to work on. He pulled up the designs and simulations he was working on to keep the next clone alive and began working on it again, trying to not think about Dib.

Unfortunately for him, Dib was all he could think about.

<The next few months>

Over time, Aik made progress on the implant designs, while Membrane was busy with taking care of the clone. Aik regularly checked on Dib, but whenever Dib was in the canister, he was unfocused and distracted. And whenever he was out, Membrane had the boy hooked up at the monitoring table, with some restraints to keep Dib from squirming and breaking his arms.

For the first few month of Dib's life, Aik didn't try to touch him. He knew Dib would be in pain from his bone deformity and so far, the boy hated Membrane touching him. And Aik was still desperately trying to not be attached.

He had already failed.

He did keep a very close eye on Dib's brain activity. And it made him curious about a few things. As a side project he worked on as a hobby, he designed a simulation based on feedback he reviewed from Dib's brain. He never planned to use it on Dib, it was just out of curiosity and to learn about his new brother.

He saved it on a separate file on his computer once it was done. It had ended up being about aliens and he was quite proud of it, even though he had nothing planned for it.

<December 23, 2003>

A day where Aik wouldn't be able to sleep. And Membrane was going to be gone a full 27 hours.

Aik was allowed to wander the lab freely to watch Dib only. Membrane had cameras and security everywhere now to make sure Aik wouldn't touch certain things, or hurt Dib in any way.

Any other day, Aik would have been fine with this. But today? Of all days? This was going to be hard.

Aik didn't try to get any work done during the day, choosing to save his energy since he already knew he wouldn't be able to sleep. Currently, it was the middle of the night. Dib was on the table, asleep and dressed in blue. He didn't have any blue marks on his skin, only purple. Aik hoped that was a good sign, that his work was keeping Dib alive and more comfortable.

Dib was breathing steadily, keeping very still. And Aik wasn't moving watching him, until something occurred to him.

Bel always got cold here, surely Dib would be cold too. Aik put his hand on Dib's forehead and sure enough, his skin was cold.

"Damn it, Membrane," Aik grumbled under his breath as he looked around for a fallen blue blanket. But there wasn't one. He huffed and went to grab his own yellow one from the white room, then quickly returned and bundled Dib up in it.

Dib snuggled with a content squeak, even moving to press against Aik directly.

"Shit, no. Nononono, don't do it Aik," he hissed at himself.

Dib fell into a deep sleep again, cozy. Aik sighed heavily and gently hugged Dib. He had no choice now but to accept he had gotten attached for a third time.
