John Shaw Torrington🩵 An attempt at a facial reconstruction.. I did this in 2020 and for some reason was very hesitant/shy(??) about posting it. To be fair, not much “reconstruction” was necessary since he was in remarkable shape at the time of his exhumation (and I assume he still looks fabulous thanks to that good ol’ permafrost treatment🧊).

Now some thoughts… because I’ve never articulated this online before..💭

I’ve had a fixation on him since I was 14 (I’m 29 now) and have attempted many times over the years to draw him in a more…well, alive state..

and I’ll just say it straight up; I think he has a beautiful, ethereal face. I’ve always thought that, even when I was a kid. If he looks that way in death, I can only imagine what that beauty was like when he was among the living. I tried to capture that in this drawing..

Anyway.. I could ramble on…

This, I think, is the most presentable drawing out of all the attempts I’ve done in the 15 years I’ve ‘known’ him— though it certainly won’t be the last. 🩵

I’m planning on doing similar portraits of Hartnell and Braine… I expect Braine will be difficult because he was not in good shape compared to the other Beechey boys..

The moon peeks through the curtains, casting a calming white light that paints shifting shapes on your creaky apartment floor. The only sounds filling your apartment are the distant sound of passing cars and Joseph’s steady breathing beside you.

Your eyes drift over to his form, tracing the outline of his being. He’s sleeping on his side, face mushed into the pillows, a heavy arm draped over your waist . You've never noticed how long his eyelashes are until now.

He shifts, eyebrows knitting together before his eyes gently peek open.

You contemplate pretending to be asleep, but it’s too late—his eyes flutter fully open, meeting yours. Your cheeks warm, caught in the act of watching him sleep for who knows how long.

He doesn’t mention it.

“You okay?”

His voice is deeper than usual, thick with sleep as he rubs his eyes and looks at you.

Your fingers grasp at a nearby blanket, fiddling with the fabric absently as you search for the right words.

He scans your face when you don’t answer, dark eyes scanning yours. He lets out a soft huff, his eyes softening when he finds what he’s looking for.

“Nightmare?” He asks gently

You hum, nodding your head as memories of the grim scenes replayed over your glossy eyes. Over, and over again.

The arm around your waist tightens, pulling you closer. His chest is warm against your cheek, a comforting contrast to the cool air drifting through the open window.

His heartbeat fills your ear, drumming softly as his chest rose and fell. Has he always been this warm?

“You don’t have to talk about it,” he whispers.

You burrow deeper into his chest, trying to hide the greedy intakes of his scent—ashy cigarettes, leather, and summer air—a scent you could happily lose yourself in.

A rough hand dips into your hair, curling around the base of your head and cupping it gently. The warmth bleeds through your scalp, cascading down your body in waves as you fight the urge to shiver. He pets at your scalp, blunt fingernails gently scratching skin. It’s almost overwhelming—the scent of him, the warmth he radiates, how he makes you feel cared for so effortlessly. It’s addicting how easily he loves you.

Very messy WIP of my John Hartnell reconstruction🫶 Based off an incredible photo from his exhumation (in 1986) that always makes me stop and stare for a while.

It’s a phenomenal photo, sharp and clear as if it were literally just snapped today. The contrast between the digital wristwatches, vinyl gloves, sterile sheets, and a young man who died 140 years ago is so startling yet poignant and sweet. It floored me the first time I saw it. Two worlds over a century apart practically nose to nose.

I wonder how it would have changed things if they had gone with what the admiralty wanted and put James at the helm. Would he have listened to croziers warnings? What would have motivated him in this expedition? He was only there to add another coat of gold to his great gilded story. He wanted to prove himself. When things began to turn bad, would he have buckled? Would he have confided in someone his fears and anxieties of leadership? If we go in order of who the admiralty wanted to lead, then crozier would be his second and Franklin his third. He had no experience out in the arctic, he'd have to rely on the counsel of his officers and commanders. Very interesting...
