History of National Pretzel Day

Like all food-related holidays, starting with a little history of  where the food came from is a great way to get to know the background of  the day. The story of the pretzel is particularly fun, especially as it  shares a theme with candy canes, which is another well-known favorite!  (In fact, Candy Cane Pretzels, dusted with crushed candy canes–instead  of salt–and glazed with frosting, are a great wintertime treat!).

Legend has it that, at some time during the Middle Ages, Catholic  Monks were trying to figure out what to do with little bits of dough  they had that were leftover after baking their loaves of bread. They  didn’t want to be wasteful. So, clever as they were, they came up with  what is now known as the pretzel. The method included folding the dough  into the shape of praying hands, or a knot that represented the Holy  Trinity, depending on who happens to be telling the story at the moment.  

Since that time, the pretzel has evolved into a much-loved treat that  has seen many uses and varieties. Some of the more common ones include  representing marriage (where the term ‘tying the knot’ came into  prominence) and also into modern-day as a popular addition to concession  stands at carnivals and events of all kinds.

The origin of the hard pretzel is a bit more recent and is among the  ranks of other great accidental discoveries like the potato chip!  Apparently, when a pretzel is left in the oven for a longer period of  time, it will bake into a crisp and crunchy bit of deliciousness. The  story goes that, when this happened, a baker was so pleasantly surprised  with the result that he took the time to perfect the recipe. Now these  crispy little treats are an extremely popular snack!

Happy New Year’s Eve! Should auld acquaintance be forgot and all that. There won’t be a newsletter in your inboxes tomorrow, so I wanted to say thanks to all of you for allowing me to write this newsletter for you for the past few months. As a writer, it’s really inspiring to have such an engaged and active readership, and I look forward to making this newsletter for y’all next year, too. By the way, my New Year’s Resolution is to not make any incredibly dumb factual errors in the newsletter, so let’s hope the fact that I incorrectly stated that the Georgia special election was being held today instead of next Tuesday was me just getting all the incredibly dumb factual errors out of my system before 2021 was upon us. New year, new newsletter, etc.

New Year, New Vaccination Plan

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has issued updated guidance on who can get their COVID-19 vaccination and when. Yay? Meh? The new plan is way easier to understand than the old one, which was a series of tables tucked into a larger, jabillion-page plan that I had to read multiple times in order to only semi-understand, and despite its maddening specificity, still managed to be kind of vague (for example, that original plan offered no clarification as to whether journalists were essential workers, which is probably something you care way less about than I do). If only for being much easier to digest, I award the new plan a score of "Yay!"

Currently, North Carolina is almost through with Phase 1a of its vaccination plan, which focused on getting medical staffers and employees and residents of long-term care facilities vaccinated.

After that, we’ll move to Phase 1b, which will split folks up into three groups, with Group 1 having priority over Group 2, etc. Group 1 is anyone over the age of 75. Then we go to Group 2, which will consist of healthcare employees and frontline workers who are over 50. Per the state’s vaccinations website, this means "responders (e.g., firefighters and police officers), corrections officers, food and agricultural workers, U.S. Postal Service workers, manufacturing workers, grocery store workers, public transit workers, and those who work in the education sector (teachers and support staff members) as well as child care workers." Group 3 will just be Group 2, but without any age restrictions.

Then it’ll be time for Phase 2, where things will widen up a good bit. Much like Phase 1b, Phase 2 will be comprised of four ranked tiers. Group 1 will be those from 65 to 74 years of age, Group 2 will be folks from the age of 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions, which according to the state will include but not be limited to folks with "cancer, COPD, serious heart conditions, sickle cell disease, and Type 2 diabetes." Group 3 will be "anyone who is incarcerated or living in other close group living settings," which I’m pretty sure doesn’t include you and your five dirtbag roommates who decided to move to Carrboro and deal weed after you graduated (but I could be wrong!). Group 4 will consist of essential workers, which the state, using the CDC’s guidelines, includes *deep breath* "workers in transportation and logistics, water and wastewater, food service, shelter and housing (e.g., construction), finance (e.g., bank tellers), information technology and communications, energy, legal, media, and public safety (e.g., engineers), and public health workers."

Congratulations, you’ve read this newsletter all the way down to the part where I talk about Phase 3 of the vaccine! Your prize is that you now know that Phase 3 will include college students and students 16 and over.

After that, it’ll be time for Phase 4, which is everybody else.

And that’s how we’re all going to get vaccinated.

According to this semi-confusing data set from the CDC, North Carolina will have received a total of 573,300 doses of the vaccine by January 4 — enough for 286,650 people to get vaccinated. I have no idea how far that will move us through the state’s different vaccine phases, but 286,650 is about 2.75 percent of the state’s estimated population of 10.49 million people, and given that a lot of those people are under the age of 16 (the lowest age COVID vaccines have been approved for so far), that seems good?

National Pretzel Day

Warm, soft, and oh-so-tasty, take this excuse to visit a pretzel  stand or shop and try a classic pretzel, or a new flavor like cinnamon  or honey-mustard.

Most people would agree that there is something extra special about a  pretzel! While, at first, it might seem like an average snack made of  bread dough, it is so much more than that. The rich bready smell, the  burst of salt in the mouth as the first bite is taken, and in some  situations, the delicious flavor of cheese or another sauce that it can  be dipped into.

Or, on the other end of the spectrum, there are those people who  prefer the crunch of the kind of pretzels that can be purchased in a bag  at the store. These crunchy little, salty snacks can be an amazing  addition to any snack mix. Some might even say that they are the very  foundation of sports gatherings everywhere.

Whatever the personal preference is, National Pretzel Day exemplifies this delicious treat in all of its forms.

History of National Pretzel Day

Like all food-related holidays, starting with a little history of  where the food came from is a great way to get to know the background of  the day. The story of the pretzel is particularly fun, especially as it  shares a theme with candy canes, which is another well-known favorite!  (In fact, Candy Cane Pretzels, dusted with crushed candy canes–instead  of salt–and glazed with frosting, are a great wintertime treat!).

Legend has it that, at some time during the Middle Ages, Catholic  Monks were trying to figure out what to do with little bits of dough  they had that were leftover after baking their loaves of bread. They  didn’t want to be wasteful. So, clever as they were, they came up with  what is now known as the pretzel. The method included folding the dough  into the shape of praying hands, or a knot that represented the Holy  Trinity, depending on who happens to be telling the story at the moment.  

Since that time, the pretzel has evolved into a much-loved treat that  has seen many uses and varieties. Some of the more common ones include  representing marriage (where the term ‘tying the knot’ came into  prominence) and also into modern-day as a popular addition to concession  stands at carnivals and events of all kinds.

The origin of the hard pretzel is a bit more recent and is among the  ranks of other great accidental discoveries like the potato chip!  Apparently, when a pretzel is left in the oven for a longer period of  time, it will bake into a crisp and crunchy bit of deliciousness. The  story goes that, when this happened, a baker was so pleasantly surprised  with the result that he took the time to perfect the recipe. Now these  crispy little treats are an extremely popular snack!

PPE AND THE COVID-19 VACCINE

After almost a year of fighting the coronavirus pandemic, hope is finally on the horizon. There have now been two COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in the United States, and doses have already begun being distributed. But we are certainly not out of the woods just yet and will continue to have to protect ourselves for at least several months into the new year. So, what exactly does the COVID vaccine mean for our need for PPE? Read on to learn more.

About the Vaccine

The United States has officially approved two different vaccines against COVID-19: one produced by Pfizer-BioNTech, and one produced by Moderna. The vaccines fight the same virus but are actually quite a bit different. The first vaccine has to be stored in special freezers to ensure its freshness and effectiveness, and it has to be administered in two doses a few weeks apart. The second vaccine, though, doesn’t require as strict refrigeration and can be administered in just one dose.

Across the country (and in other areas like the United Kingdom), many people are already being vaccinated. Most of those who have already received their vaccine (or first dose) as of December 2020 are healthcare workers on the frontlines of the pandemic as well as those living in long-term care facilities. After these individuals have received their vaccines, the priority will go to other frontline essential workers and those ages 75 and up. From there, vaccines will be distributed according to a set priority schedule determined by the CDC.

What About PPE?

We’re all breathing a huge sigh of relief at the prospect of having a COVID-19 vaccine. But, as with any vaccine, we simply will not see results overnight. One of the available vaccines has to be administered in two doses, which means it is just not effective until both doses have been given. Even then, it takes a while for the vaccine to work its way through the body and show the cells how to fight off the potential threat of coronavirus.

As such, it’s incredibly important that we continue to use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) with the same seriousness we’ve been taking throughout the pandemic thus far. That means utilizing face masks and shields when we’re around others, providing hand sanitizer to our workers, and enforcing temperature checks in high-traffic areas like offices. Social distancing should still be encouraged as well.
