From our Soviet Russian Children's Picture Book Collection, here's a page from "Samsusam" and a translation provided by our very own conservator extraordinaire, Sibylla Benatova. This page is a poem which means: Sam lives without a worry He throws his mustache into the sea And instantaneously catches Pike, ruffе, and rockfish for a hundred years ahead. And should he feel like a second course Sam would blink with his eyelashes and a flock of birds would fly into his mouth. *** Samsusam, Leningrad ; Moskva :Raduga, [192-?] PZ64 3 A53 1920z http://ow.ly/eZTp30hlSK8 Soviet Russian Children’s Picture Book Collection *** #kislakcenter #pennlibraries #childrensbooks #rarebooks #childrensliterature #fromthestacks #sovietchildrensbooks #illustration #poetry #fineprinting #sovietliterature

I was tagged by @bury-me-with-books , which is awesome, thank you!
Name: Jesse Ruth... Cats or Dogs: Cats all the way! .. Hogwarts House: GryffinClaw ... Sexuality: Ace .. Current Time: 5:27 PM... Reason For URL: I have severe depression and sometimes Manic episodes, with a lot of social anxiety and just plain anxiety thrown in, so I feel like the name kinda fits me, embracing the weirdness lol... Favourite Animal: This is the hardest choice, I love all animals, particularly cats because they are so straightforward with their attitudes, kinda like me lol

#Onthisday in 1883, after 14 years of construction, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public. 🌉 While John Augustus Roebling is often the only name associated with the bridge’s design and production, six other men in particular (who are rarely acknowledged in popular history) were involved in the bridge’s engineering, including William H. Paine, an assistant engineer for the project, whose papers reside at our Museum. 🌉 For 14 years, Paine worked on the engineering and construction of the bridge’s cable railway system, obtaining 14 patents for new or improved technologies. 🌉📲Learn more about Paine on our #FromtheStacks archive at the link in bio. #nyhistory #BrooklynBridge via ✨ @padgram ✨(http://dl.padgram.com) https://www.instagram.com/p/BUfOsDpj0Jd/

This wondrous #woodcut presents quite an interesting scene, a man being cared for with a bustling scene of construction and wildlife just outside the window. From a #sixteenthcentury book of German proverbs, this image gives us much to ponder on this cold winter's day. *** De officiis, Germany, 1531 Folio PA6312.D5 N48 1531 http://ow.ly/UA3V30hnx6y *** #kislakcenter #pennlibraries #handcolored #handcoloredprint #ethics #proverbs #marcustulliuscicero #fineprinting #rarebooks #fromthestacks #bookstagram #interior #interiors #germanproverbs

I was tagged by sierrasanator
RULES: 1. Always post the rules. 2. Answer the questions of the person who tagged you. 3. Write 10 new questions. 4. Tag 10 random people. 5. Tell them you tagged them
Here are your questions…
1. What was the main reason you joined tumblr?
I thought about it for a long time, but The Lizzie Bennet Diaries were the catalyst.
2. What makes you happy?
Being reunited with my Smith friends, Twin's ridiculous impression of Putin planning the Opening Ceremony, morning coffee with a puppy napping on my lap.
3. Who is your favorite author?
David Sedaris or Laurie Notaro. Highly recommend both!
4. Are you superstitious?
About certain things, absolutely. If the Sox are up, you don't change the channel, you know?
5. Do you believe more in coincidences or fate?
I believe in both. I believe the universe puts you in certain places at certain times, but how experiences play out is up to you.
6. Have you ever met/talked to a celebrity?
I have! It reduces me to the dorkiest version of myself. The concert venues by my college were small enough that we always hung around and met the performers.
When I was studying abroad in Ireland, Laurie Notaro came to my city for a book tour and Twin went to get me a signed copy. She called me on the phone and woke me up because it was like 2am in Ireland and she handed the phone to Laurie and it was probably top ten moments of my life even though I was confused and sleepy and totally unprepared.
7. How much has your taste in music changed throughout your life so far?
This is an awesome question. I am shameless about my taste in music, which has basically just expanded over time--I still like everything I listened to in middle school.
8. Who inspires you?
My mom and siblings always. People who are honest about themselves even when it's hard. People who are passionate about the things in their lives.
9. What do you like most about yourself?
I guess this sounds like a cop out but I have the most interesting, lovely, supportive group of friends around the world and I don't deserve them and I think they are the most interesting part of my life. I know you have to be your own leading lady, but it's a lot easier with such a kickass cast of characters.
10. Which of your talents are you most proud of?
My ability to navigate crowded airports. Flexibility in the face of change. Great chocolate chip cookies.
Thanks for tagging me! I'm going to tag... fromthestacks thecollywobbles breakthebricks captaintightpants42b thestrengthofmylife fondueriot merric themagazineandwineparty wingsoritdidnothappen thekevinmarshall
Your questions...
1. Is there one place you consider home or does it change?
2. If you were a combination of any two animals/creatures, what would you be? (Bonus points for why.)
3. How would you spend your days if you could create your own job opening?
4. Have you ever waited for a midnight movie opening?
5. Do you ever read your horoscope?
6. What's the one movie you can't pass up when it's on?
7. What is the last book you read and enjoyed?
8. If you had to pick a reality show to participate in, which would it be?
9. What's your go-to jukebox song?
10. Tea/coffee/neither?

From The Stacks: Drawing and Painting Imaginary Animals
On a day to day basis as we search out and process information it is easy to get into the rut of only looking at topics that are familiar to us. In an effort to break that habit I find myself making frequent trips to the public libraries in my area where I wander the stacks waiting for information to find me instead of vice versa. This week Carla Sonheim's Drawing And Painting Imaginary Animals caught my eye.
The book is full of exercises for opening up the 'ole imagination while drawing whimsical creatures. It was just the "don't take yourself too seriously" message I've been needing to receive.
This morning instead of my usual drawing session I tried Exercise #9: Watercolor Blobimals. Pretty simple and approachable method. Just fill a couple of pages with abstract watercolor shapes, pick a few that appeal to you, and then use just about any media you prefer to realize the animal that the shapes seem to be alluding to. (Kind of like when you were a kid and you picked out shapes in the clouds.) I've included one of my more successful attempts below.
