WIP Wednesday

Hellooooo it's been a minute bc words are hard!! Thank you to everyone that continues to tag me in these even as I become increasingly unresponsive lol I haven't been writing much and what I HAVE written lately is either quick and posted already or is a bit too spoiler-y/strange out of context. BUT here are new and sad words from one of my oldest WIPs: the AU where Alex gets plopped into a much sadder universe and tries to fix it

Henry frowns. “No one speaks to me like you do – even right now.”

“Like I said, I'm sorry –”

“You misunderstand. I like that you are belligerent. I'm coddled everywhere I go, and with you…” Henry steps back from the railing with a rough exhale and makes his way to a nearby bench. Alex follows, bouncing his leg at breakneck speed in the long minute that passes before Henry speaks again. “I imagine an entirely different life when I see you.”

He takes a gamble on a joke. “One where I'm antagonizing you on the regular?”

Henry licks his chapped lips. “Something like that.”

Alex feels unworthy of the intensity of Henry's gaze – a million different meanings in those melancholy eyes. He breaks the connection and looks to the sea that captured Henry's full attention earlier.

“Would it be easier?” Alex asks. “This other life where we're friends?”

Henry breathes out a small, heartbreaking laugh.

I haven't decided if they're a little older or a little younger than Five, but either way they'd be in the range of 12-14, with Klaus being maybe a year older than Ben.

In this AU, Klaus and Ben have been living together on their own in this little abandoned town for a long time. I don't think i came up with a town name, but in the books its called Stained-by-the-Sea and used to make ink, and in this au it is a town that used to manufacture umbrellas instead. Like in the books, this town was formerly fairly successful, but has fallen on hard times in recent decades and slowly been closing down ever since. At the time of this AU, it's nearly entirely dead, and most of the only people remaining are children holding down the family businesses while their parents set up new lives for them in the City. There are some adults remaining, but not very many, and not many people in general.

This got long, so I'm putting the rest of it under the cut lol

I mention all of this in the context of your question in order to show that *at the moment*, Klaus and Ben are in a pretty similar situation to many of the other children in the town; many children are unsupervised while their parents are in the process of moving. However, Klaus and Ben have been unsupervised for much much longer. They've never been precisely homeless, because there are many empty buildings, but they haven't had anyone other than themselves watching out for them for a long time.

Both of them have been taking odd jobs for the duration of their acquaintance, entry level retail jobs, and so on. They avoid the remains of the police force because if they were caught without parents or a guardian they would be sent to the City and probably separated.

They were living in this way for several years, up until... i have a specific number of months in my outline but i'm too lazy to go fact check. Lets go with "a few months" before Five arrives in town. See, a few months before, the town's old school mysteriously reopened. It had been a fancy boarding school for rich umbrella manufacturing people's kids (like some kind of... umbrella academy), until there weren't any rich people in town anymore and it closed down. Now it's reopened and it's saying that the children from the town can attend, for free!

Ben has wanted to go to school for so long. He loves reading!! The library is his favorite place!! Klaus wants absolutely nothing to do with school. He likes their life in town, where they're beholden to nobody, way better thank you. But he knows Ben really wants this. So they separate, for the first time in years. Ben *promises* he will write every day, and come back on weekends or breaks or however it is boarding schools work. There is probably much crying.

At first, it goes just like how Ben promises. He doesn't write literally every day, but more than once a week. He hasn't had a day where they're free to return to town yet, but they make plans for when he will. He's having a blast learning about science and reading books and doing math, although it's weird having rules to follow again. Although, he mentions that they have a weird amount of mandatory medical checkups, and he's caught a cold a few times from being in close proximity to a bunch of kids for the first time in while.

And then.... the letters start to have gaps. Because Ben is busy, or feeling ill or tired. He gets distracted. And then, they stop entirely. By the time Five shows up in town, Klaus hasn't gotten a letter from Ben in months.

I think most of that is a just slightly more in depth version of what I've already said about them. Here are a few other tidbits:

before he.... disappeared...., Ben had a giant and incredibly obvious crush on the new librarian, Jill. Klaus teased him about it a lot and tried to get him to send her love letters (he did not succeed in this endeavor because Ben knows when he's being played)

one of Klaus' current jobs is at a printing shop. He's using it to make missing posters for Ben.

Klaus meets Five because he is a witness for a crime that Five is investigating. Once he learns about people investigating crimes that aren't the police (and once he finishes teasing Five for having a number for a name), he asks for Five's help in figuring out what happened to Ben. This, more than the crime, is what gets the plot in motion. Ben is the main Damsel In Distress of this saga, sorry Ben

I'm thinking that one of Klaus' side jobs is being a phone psychic. I just think it would be funny

im not telling you what happened to either of their parents. One of the recurring things in ATWQ is that you never truly learn what's going on with children's parents. You are given no information other than the kids' words, and they never tell more than the absolute bare minimum. So I will not be doing that either!

Poppy for N2 au, it took me so long to make her design cuz I didn't really know what I wanted to do only because I feel like her design is pretty perfect.

But then I just thought about fun outfits to give her or outfits that I would find comfortable if I was wearing them and it all came together.

Poppy here is pretty much the same as here movie counterpart, as nothing really changes on her end of things other than having more insight on Branch through his brothers, and through Lief. Shes also a bit more understanding a bit earlier on because of it but it doesnt do much to change her own character arc I would say.

There's also the tumblr post here but I recommend the link in the title because its the ao3 version, and that one is edited and has some stuff in it that's not in the tumblr post, and will be the version I'm using.

So for summary: this Danyal is also from a Demon Siblings Au where Danny is five years older than Damian. However, things turned out a bit differently, and Danny and Damian had a fantastic relationship with one another. Danny loved music and regularly came up with songs to sing to Damian with. Specifically the folk band Yaelokre's EP "Hayfields" (seriously go fucking listen to it its sooo good. Harpy Hare is the second song but its my favorite. Special shoutout to @gascansposts for introducing the band to me)

He falls off a train when he's twelve and Damian is seven while the two of them and Talia are on mission. He ends up with magically induced amnesia and wakes up in Arkansas while the Fentons are on their yearly Divorce-iversary visit to Aunt Alica, and since he can only remember his name, he ends up being taken into their care.

Yaelokre Danny has the same facial scar as Things in Threes Danyal, since he was initially another version of him where things turned out better. I'm debating on whether or not I should take it away however, and give him a different scar (maybe from when he fell off the train?), just because the scar is a pretty key identifier for Ti3 Danyal.

Danny frequently visits Aunt Alicia in Arkansas! Well, only after he gets settled in and stuff. He doesn't really like the city that much and prefers the countryside where Alicia lives. I know she lives in a cabin but I'm changing it to a farm, so she puts Danny to work and gets him to help her.

I don't want to confine his hobbies to only being star stuff, because people tend to have more than one hobby and I feel like it reduces him to one-dimensionality, so he likes to garden, and learns guitar. His room becomes filled with plants, and he turns their roof into a rooftop greenhouse right below to OPS Center.

He has a complex relationship with the weapons from his past, but he's not... like... appalled by it? When he finds his weapons in the Fenton attic all he thinks is that they're his weapons, and he starts carrying a knife on him afterwards. Essentially he becomes fascinated with weaponry because its one of the few physical ties he has to his past, and while he's not training like he is in the League, he allows his strong muscle memory to guide him through his katas.

Danny likes climbing things. This causes Problems For Everyone Else.

Danny was not the "kinder Al Ghul" in the League. His kindness extended to his brother and family, and that's it. To everyone else he had high expectations out of them, and the pride you'd expect from the grandson of Ra's Al Ghul and trained by its top members. While he wasn't like, unnecessarily cruel or anything, he wasn't merciful either.

This transfers post-train fall as him coming off as no-nonsense and unforgiving. He's not fond of the idea of giving people second chances, and is skeptical of the idea. He's disgusted by incompetency and views it as an unforgivable offense, especially if he thinks that the person should know better, although he's not sure why. Some egocentrism for the soul.

He doesn't like being touched by anyone who isn't family, and gets irritated when anyone grabs him or holds onto him for extended amounts of time. Dash has gotten hit so many times. With Jack Fenton's tendency for abrupt physical affection, it doesn't make it any better. I'd argue it'd make it worse because Danny doesn't want to be touched more often than not.

Danyal had a red scarf in the League that he wore on his last mission, it came off before he fell off and caught itself on the roof. Damian still has it and took it with him to Wayne Manor. He's got it locked in his room and takes it out when he's alone and missing Danny the most. One time he forgot to put it away before leaving his room, and Dick was visiting the manor for something and found it. Damian found him holding it and freaked out.

Dick could only say "I've never seen you wear this, Damian, this is really pretty--" before Damian shoved him to the floor and stole it out of his hands, before screaming at him; "Don't touch this! You don't ever touch this! This is mine! You hear me!?"

It caused such a commotion that the rest of the family present came to see what the fuss was about, and Damian kicked them all out of his room. Dick is the one brother Damian's the closest with, so the fact he reacted so strongly shocked them all.

This is likely what leads to the "Danyal" conversation.

Hornigold's Izzy was the worst, of course. A version of himself that never escaped that terrible place, who lived his life as little more than an object. He still has nightmares about all the things Baz told them, about all the things he didn't.

It doesn't really surprise him, after the first ones, not at its root. To be Izzy Hands is to be someone's after all, though seeing his own face on someone so fundamentally different to him never gets less weird. The people who these other Izzys attached themselves too often left him with more questions than answers. Jack's Izzy, he can understand, from a certain view, though the man himself felt like a fever dream. The less said about Stede's Izzy the better, he's never going to forgive him for the ideas he put in his Stede's head.

Then there was Sam's Izzy.

The first thing anyone noticed about him was that he was happy. He smiled and laughed without thought, and went through life with an ease Izzy didn't think he had ever felt. The crew took to him immediately, accepting him in a way they never did the other Izzys, and certainly not their own. They prodded him and asked him endless questions, and he took every touch without a flinch and answered every question without a hint of a grumble. This Izzy was free. He was open, unburdened, trusting. He was happy.

Sam's Izzy was the one that hurt the most to see. He could accept the worst that Hornigold could've offered, that he would have suffered and been broken. It was infinitely harder to see that he had a chance to be this happy. That it slipped through his fingers.

He's never looked back before, but now? Seeing what might've been? He can't stop himself from considering the possibility that maybe he made the wrong choice back then, going with Ed.

oooh dakota and vyncent…, where do i start. i warn you i don't normally do like. character analysis writing type posts? so please excuse if it's bad.

they have perhaps the most strained relationship out of the prime defenders. but that's not necessarily a bad thing. it's really compelling. they're very similar but also very different at the same time. and maybe this is why they can sort of grate against each other sometimes, but is also why they are such good friends who can rely on each other.

vyncent grew up living a life that, while not necessarily comfortable, he was familiar with. he was happy and he had a support system in the greats and his parents. that got ripped away from him very suddenly and he got dropped in the deep end of a world entirely unfamiliar. meanwhile dakota (from after his parents death onwards) had a very difficult childhood. he spent many years without a support system - his parents gone, his aunt struggling herself and not able to care for him as he needs. but he's had time to learn to deal with that. rockfall/new haven is where he's grown up, and he knows it like the back of his hand. so they're both struggling but like in opposite ways? where vyncent has been okay for most of his life but now he hasn't had a chance to adjust, while dakota's been going through it for longer but that means he's been able to adjust and is familiar with the rules of this world.

they also have opposite ways of coping with bad things / tackling their problems. dakota shuts down. vyncent lashes out. dakota is determined to never take a life. vyncent comes from a world where fighting to the death is normal. dakota not only trusts, but idolises heroes. vyncent has been nothing but let down by them and doesn't trust them at all.

i think about that scene in season 1 so much where they're at mark's house, and tide has been taken, and dakota's just shut down. vyncent starts yelling at him because he's lost everything he had in this world and can't afford to just stop like that. it's just the perfect example of how their opposite experiences and coping mechanisms cause them to clash.

more extremely, when william gets killed. dakota completely breaks down, while vyncent starts attacking even more furiously. then vyncent is like. almost pleading (? you could say? not sure if thats the word) with dakota to just get up and fight because he can't do this alone. he can't do this without dakota. he couldn't have done any of this without dakota.

but in perhaps the more simple ways, they're quite alike. they're the epitome of dumb teenage boys. i mean, they'll just break into a duet on the train. they goof off together - the shopping cart race, that one scene in the gym in season one.

so. like. they lean on each other. they both don't have much to rely on. but they have each other. i think vyncent was probably, even if its a large part subconsicous, feeling betrayed when dakota left over the s1-2 timeskip. likewise how dakota felt betrayed over the bino and mark thing / mal amulet / belltech, etc. etc. but they stick together. no matter what they go through they get out of it, and they get out of it together.

so. okay apologies for taking so long to say so little. essentially what i like most about dakota and vyncent's friendship is that duality of relying on each other both out of necessity and because they're the only ones who really get each other, and also having the energy of like. "hey bro how many slices of pizza can i fit in my mouth at once. hey bro bet you cant backflip off of this building. hey bro let's do a karaoke duet of breaking free from high school musical"

as vyncent himself said in late season 2. they're brothers. (falls over and sobs)

this is. um. a Jet Set Radio/Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Death joke AU, spawned out of a in-joke that started in a pokepasta discord. my apologies to both the pokepasta and jsr fandoms

the entire basis is the idea that Corn in Future retconned og JSR Beat as leader/founder of the GGs (is beat being leader in the og even CANON?) so Corn and Beat are the Myras. no it's not a joke funny enough to justify how many hours i sunk into drawing these. no attempt was made to change the setting, assign most of the other cast, or otherwise make this au hold up to ANY amount of scrutiny. if i tried to make this actually work somehow then i'd REALLY end up too far gone. also i keep calling myrtle!beat "Meat".

So like, I'm bout to write the first chapter on a Google doc (since I need to wait a week for the AO3 invite to process so I can make an acount), and I realized I kinda... lack a title.

And before someone comments on how I should write the story before I title it, I have made the executive decision to title any and all fan fics I write with dubiously fitting at best song lyrics. I uh... didn't come up with a song to yoink lyrics to title this fic with, since I decided to comit to this (mostly as character writing practice for my game lol) at like... 12 am last night. So yeah. Consider this an open request for y'all Oil Fire enjoyers to just give me songs you like so I can read the lyrics to pick a title.
