Who was "Eiyu Club"?
Eiyu Club, simply put, was a small independent production company in the late 1990s to late 2000s who primarily did low-budget android heroine tokusatsu movies.
Tumblr media
[A behind-the-scenes shot from Eiyu Club production Red Lilac: Dream of Shudder, presumably on the state-of-the-art landing pad for the action scenes.]
It's been difficult to find an English-language summary of who they are, so I've done a bit of a dive into their history and how they worked. Join me below the cut to figure out who exactly Eiyu Club was, and how they made their films!
Now, at the risk of saying “I’m so sad Eiyu Club is dead… sometimes I can hear their voice”, there is still an iteration of Eiyu Club alive, although the focus in this post is on their earlier work, which definitely had a different flavor to it. They go by Akase Planning now, and while some of their more recent work hasn’t been as robot-girl focused, it looks like they may be doing more of that soon based on some recent video clips they’ve posted.
In regards to the Eiyu Club that once was, with immense help from @centrally-unplanned, I have cobbled together a vague picture of how Eiyu Club operated. Given the time period that I’m looking at (late 1990s, early 2000s), many of the webpages are gone but a few are saved via the Wayback Machine, which provided a large part of the information here.
How did they sell their works?
For example, here is a snapshot of the Eiyu Club website at a time when they were preparing to sell “Dream Monster Ciao” DVDs.
“We've kept you waiting for a long time. We are now accepting pre-orders for the Dream Monster Ciao DVD. The main feature and making-of are 22 minutes each, for a total of 44 minutes, and the price is 3,000 yen. It will be released at the end of February. We will include a photo with those who pre-order this time.”
Some classic hallmarks of Eiyu Club films are present here: the “making of” being nearly as long as the feature itself, the movies occasionally sold with add-ons (such as the photo), and pre-orders clearly meant for the fans of the group. Clearly they had a sales system for their merchandise, and had enough fans that pre-ordering from just the hype was even an option.
But the VHSs and DVDs weren’t just sold online. Some, such as Red Lilac: Dream of Shudder, were sold at a hobby store Nipponbashi “Jungle” in Osaka. Apparently there was an event called the Indie Heroine Festival on March 28th, 1999, and Cyber Lady Suzuka - according to this information page - was presumably sold there.
Tumblr media
["Jungle" Hobby Shop in Osaka.]
Several of the videos were also sold at WonderFest (more casually known as WonFes).
Tumblr media
[Red Lilac and Seria showing off VHSs of their works at WonFes 2002]
It looks like they attended on February 3rd, 2002 (image obtained via a WayBack Machine archive of the site).
They also sold Cyber Lady Suzuka during at least one Comiket (Summer 1999) according to one of the product pages, and were selling it at Video Market in Shinjuku, Tokyo, as well. According to this page, they sold about 350 units within 7 months of publishing. It can be difficult to find hard numbers on units sold, so this little factoid helped paint a picture of the scale that Eiyu Club was working at.
How did they get the word out?
Events were key to getting the word out about Eiyu Club’s work. One such event that Eiyu Club attended was Heroes Century ‘99. In a blog post about the day of the event, several other indie groups also attended, and other movies were screened as well. It was the first time the actress for Suzuka saw her titular film screened in front of an audience, causing her to be nervous, but it seems the event was in good cheer and it went well.
Tumblr media
[Meetup photo at the end of Heroes Century 1999]
Something else to note about the blog post is that apparently Heroes Century 2000 was supposedly held in the “Jungle” hobby store in Osaka, which I had mentioned earlier as a place that sold Eiyu Club merchandise. There is also an event listing on the Jungle website for 2001.
Eiyu Club also apparently sold other items in addition to their movies, such as the Cyber Lady Suzuka Soundtrack. Akase Planning, which is the production company that Eiyu Club became, has a merch website where you can buy a keychain for their upcoming android girl video, although I can’t find information on if they sold such merchandise for their other works as well.
Tumblr media
[Cyber Lady Suzuka CD cover]
Something else that has interested me about Eiyu Club is the variety of locations that they frequented. For example, one of the Cyber Lady Suzuka filming locations was Kujime Motors, in Aichi, which is apparently still open and running today, 26 years later. In the credits for Cyber Lady Suzuka, they gave a shout-out to the Nagoya chapter of the Eiyu Club fanclub (as it appeared a lot of the film was filmed in the area). As noted before, Jungle in Osaka was another place that was a locus of activity for them as they did events and sold Eiyu Club merchandise. (Their website from this era says they focused heavily on independent movies, which makes sense for how strongly they championed Eiyu Club.) Since a lot of otaku culture was centered in Tokyo at the time, the breadth of their fanbase really showed in how widespread Eiyu Club enthusiasts were.
Who were the members of Eiyu Club?
Speaking of the credits, you can see from the cast and crew on Eiyu Club’s productions that it’s often the same core group of people. (Check out the Gossameru Fansubs website to see full credit lists from the movies.) According to the HEROINE Magazine Volume #2 article on their work, Eiyu Club members had pooled their money together to create their earlier works such as Cyber Lady Suzuka (1998), Red Lilac: Dream of Shudder (2001) and Blue Lilac: Pure Heart (2002), slowly upgrading their equipment as they went. The article also mentioned that Ausencia Memoria was their first work to use hired actresses, which was a huge step up for the group. The depth of community that group had in the early days shows in how their names repeat throughout the productions, and many times one person has three or more roles in the credits, showing a willingness to work extremely hard to finish the movie.
They worked with other groups/companies, such as SIGMA Modeling Studio (modeling as in, plastics modeling for masks and costumes) and Action Team IF, an action-oriented original character club. Nishida Special Effects Laboratory, which has a fairly extensive resume, did the explosives for Red Lilac.
There’s also the participation of individuals who worked outside of companies. On a page written by the person who did the costume design for the character of Blue Lilac, they also mentioned the person who did the sewing for it, who now does resin food modeling. There’s a person from the “Toyota City Hall Film Club” who says they did some of the music in Red Lilac (who can indeed be seen named in the credits).
Beyond what I’ve seen, I’m sure there is more Eiyu Club information to be found. Given how long ago this specific era of Eiyu Club was, much is lost to the ravages of time passing on the internet, or the decay of physical media. If anyone has more insights into how the group worked at the time, websites with more information, or more magazines that featured them, please share that information with me - I'd love to hear it!

So I'm just going to say it ...
Tumblr media
I know there's a lot of folks who aren't feeling the new Night Court series, and it's likely not going to get renewed for another season. But I am proudly in the minority of folks who are enjoying the show and I appreciate what it's trying to do and the laughs it provides.
And this week's episode is a great example of that. Setting aside my pro-anyone-associated-with-Broadway-is-awesome bias, this week's episode was fantastic!
Sidenote: Yay! Andrew Rannells!
This episode was grounded in what felt like an honest commentary of what is going on in the world. And I especially adored it because my personal backstory is that the episode was probably born from an actual conversation someone had about or with John Larroquette in real life.
There was both silliness (the whole bit about the EDM festival in Flushing) and heart (the conversation at the end where Dan expresses how it hurt that the people he cared about were just humoring him because of his age). I love it when the show does that!
Tumblr media
The B storyline (the lie detector test/crush on Wyatt) was just as funny as the A storyline, and it helped reveal just a little bit more about the characters as well, which is always appreciated. Character development has always been a must when it comes to any show truly resonating with me, and it's nice to see they haven't forgotten that.
I also appreciated the balance of this episode. Sure, there was a commentary about generational differences, but Julianne got to represent the cooler members of the older generations. And Andrew Rannells' character Tad represented how a bit douche-y and annoying some members of younger generations can be, especially toward older gens. The point being that ageism can go both ways. But in the end, everyone got to be funny and showcase how each person in the cast is talented in their own way.
I understand that this might be the last season of the new version, but I am unapologetically enjoying it and wish the network would give it space to find its rhythm like the original series got a chance to do. As much as I enjoyed the OG Night Court, I won't pretend that it didn't need a couple of years to find the right cocktail of talent and its own singular voice.
Surely, I'm not the only one who remembers that there was an entirely different court clerk before Charles Robinson joined in the 2nd season, 2 public defendants before Markie Post joined in the 3rd season, and 2 bailiffs before Marsha Warfield joined in the 4th season. And even though there were funny and heartfelt episodes in the first 3 seasons, the show didn't really hit its stride until the 4th season when Marsha joined the cast.
But unfortunately, audiences have shorter attention spans now, and any series that doesn't deliver nonstop gut-busting laughs in the first 2 or 3 episodes is often automatically considered "unwatchable" by the audiences who rely on a popular influencer or YouTuber to tell them what to think.
Oh well, I am determined to be grateful for what we have been allowed to enjoy. Because the show has really delivered some great laughs at a time when I most certainly needed them.
Now to convince NBC to release each season on DVD or in a downloadable permanent streaming format for those of us who would like to watch the show any time we want in the future.

a/n: they are in their 3rd year here and gojo is still their teacher because he just has to be. nobara is also here because she just has to be.
----
❥⋱G- Gift: What did he get you?
Now, it took Yuuji a little time to decide on the perfect gift for you, because we all know our baby is a little dumb and doesn’t actually know much about what girls like. Of course, he had to drag Megumi and Nobara along for this little impromptu shopping trip, much to their (Megumi’s) disinclination.
So, as they’re strolling through the Tokyo shopping district, Yuuji's thinking hard about what you might like.
“Oh, there’s a video store! Let’s go in here!”
Megumi scowls immediately and Nobara is very tempted to slap the pinkette upside his head.
“Idiotdori, this is why girls don’t like you.” Nobara told him after following through with slapping him upside the head. Yuuji grimaced and rubbed the bump that was beginning to form through his messy pink locks.
“Y/N likes me…”
“An unfortunate revelation for her, I’m sure.”
Yuuji just decided to let that last comment fly and look around the store. Posters advertising the latest release of his favorite movie, Human Earthworm, were strewn up on the walls, which gave him an idea.
Since Valentine’s Day was right around the corner, the store had a little display shelf of romantic movies set up near the checkout counter, ranging in genres from comedy to horror. How a horror movie can be romantic, well, just ask Yuuji.
He approached the display, started picking though the titles, and came upon a strategically placed box of those friendship necklaces where one person wears half the heart and gives the second half to their significant other.
“Why are you getting her a friendship necklace, she’s your girlfriend.” Nobara chastised as Yuuji went to the counter with his armload of purchases.
“She’s also my best friend, so I think it’s a fitting gift!” The pink-haired male retorted, sticking his tongue out. Megumi was just here so he didn’t get fined.
Gojo then appeared out of thin air, giggling at how flustered Yuuji looked while he waited his turn in line, and even offered to pay for everything. Yuuji declined politely because this was going to be your first Valentine’s Day together and he wanted to do it himself.
Yuuji decided to give you your gifts during the Valentine’s Day party Gojo threw for the class (and had catered and everything)
He approached you with a shy disposition; unusual for him, but he was nervous that you wouldn’t like his gifts.
“Y/N! I got you this!” Yuuji thrust a big, rectangular white box with a light pink satin ribbon tied around it into your arms.
You stumbled back a bit with an ‘oof’ - the box was pretty heavy!
“I really hope that you like it!” He bowed his head with his cheeks tinted pink.
Walking over to your desk, you moved your Valentine cards and gifts from Megumi and Nobara to the side and set the box down. Upon opening it, you let out a soft gasp: inside the box laid a bouquet of small pink tulips, reminiscent of Yuuji’s hair color; the necklace, an assortment of DVDs, and multiple movie snacks.
Your eyes widened as you looked at the arrangement of everything, the time and thought that he had to put into this to make it look nice for you. First, you picked up the necklace, and a soft smile adorned your face as you read what it said.
“Best Friends Forever.”
“Flip it over.” Yuuji now stood next to you, watching with careful eyes.
On the back, one side of the necklace was engraved with his initials and the other yours.
“We can each wear the opposite, so we’ll always have a piece of each other’s heart.” He said, sounding so cute.
Your throat started to get scratchy; you had to swallow so you didn’t end up crying. Still your voice wobbled a bit,
“Yuu, I love this, and you got…Human Earthworm, all five of them, wow..” You laughed while subtly trying to blink away the tears.
“So…you like it?” Yuuji asked with his honey-gold eyes blown wide.
“I love it. This is so thoughtful; thank you, baby. I can’t wait to watch all of them with you.”
Yuuji was overjoyed that you actually ended up liking his gift! He held you to him as you wrapped your arms around his torso, then flipped Nobara the bird with a triumphant grin on his face.
Nobara rolled her eyes and turned towards Megumi, who was just silently observing from his desk.
“Why did you let him buy that?!”
“What do you mean ‘let’ - no way you’re trying to blame this on me right now…”
Meanwhile, a chibi version of Gojo was in the background snapping photos with his old-school Polaroid camera while pink hearts floated around his head.
Safe to say that Yuuji does know a little bit about what girls like. His girl, at least.
❥⋱K - Kiss: Get those lips ready! Smooches 💋
Yuuji loves kissing you! He gets so excited about it, too. It makes his heart swell with pride and love when you ask him for kisses, and even more so when others are around, because that shows just how much you're into him. Though if you're a little shy, he won’t pressure you into PDA; he never wants to make his baby feel uncomfortable, even with him. French-kissing is his favorite; he just loves the taste of you so much, and the little sounds that you make when he moves his tongue a certain way. He also likes to leave kisses (and hickies) all along the expanse of your neck and shoulder, making sure that you can still cover them with your top.
❥⋱N - Naughty: One thing he’d like to try in the bedroom.
This young man has an incredibly large sexual appetite, so honestly there’s probably not too much that you haven't tried in the bedroom already. Though something that never really crossed his mind was Facetime sex.
“Yuuji, you’re only a few rooms down from me? If you want to have sex, we just…can.” You asked in confusion.
He shook his head profusely,
“No, babe. I want to try something different. I want to be able to look at you but not be able to touch you. I want to yearn for you.”
You were pretty shocked when he admitted this but decided to give it a go-ahead.
Now, whenever you’re away on long solo missions, you’ll have to be extra careful about accepting Facetime calls from Yuuji, lest everyone around you gets an eyeful of him stroking his long, hard cock for you, whining your name, and saying how much he misses you as he overstimulates himself for your viewing pleasure.

Kaiju Week in Review (October 15-21, 2023)
Tumblr media
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1 is metahuman-heavy, establishing how the Titans of the Monsterverse found themselves on the same Earth as DC's finest and ending with Superman flying off to face Godzilla. It's early days, but the conveniently deserted Skull Island base the Legion of Doom storms into makes me pessimistic that any of the Monsterverse's human characters will show up. Rodan is also absent from the Titan line-up, despite appearing via flashback in the short Godzilla: Fight or Flight comic included in the Monsterverse Omnibus earlier this year. (Toho must be overcharging for Godzilla's supporting cast again.) It should be fun watching D-listers like Behemoth, Scylla, and Camazotz tangle with some of the world's most famous superheroes though.
Sales data for DC comics is effectively unavailable now, but anecdotally this one is doing gangbusters. The downside of snagging it now over waiting for the trade paperback is that DC disperses ads throughout the comic, instead of just at the end like IDW.
Tumblr media
Toho announced a ton of U.S. Godzilla merch launching in the U.S. on November 3. Your mileage will vary, but the most interesting baubles to me are the Godzilla Minus One promo cards from UVS Games (to be sold on TCGplayer.com) and the trading cards from Surreal Entertainment (to be sold at Five Below). Very few Godzilla trading cards have been produced in either Japan or the U.S. since 2006, and most of those have been cross-promotions with Magic: The Gathering and Battle Spirits. I have a small collection of random cards from older sets (a couple of them signed), and it'll be cool to expand it a little.
Tumblr media
Toho's Godzilla Day announcement also included some news on Godzilla Minus One's U.S. release, which I thought deserved its own section. Tickets go on sale November 3rd—including for "special Early Access Fan Event Screenings on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, in IMAX and large format theaters across the country." So Toho International has outmaneuvered Beyoncé in the competition for IMAX screens, if only for one night.
In other Minus One news, a couple new TV spots are out (and translated by the GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO YouTube channel). One shows off a new Godzilla ability, if you're wary of spoilers. Its world premiere was held beneath the Godzilla Head in Shinjuku on October 18, where the incredible Godzilla Attack Truck also debuted.
Tumblr media
IDW's Godzilla Valentine's Day Special, due January 31, dares to ask, "What if the old 'kill the monster or study the monster' argument was foreplay?" Zoe Tunnell, who I suspect is a Godzilla 2000 fan, writes, and Dani Pendergast illustrates. I'd like to thank them both for making a comic specifically for me. The logline:
Is there anything as romantic as seeing the world together? Hopping from country to country to take in the sights and splendor in the fleeting seconds before Godzilla smashes the skyline? Truly, there's nothing like the thrill of an international game of cat and mouse between an intrepid amateur kaiju researcher and a global kaiju-response lieutenant. But when you're up against Godzilla, it's hard to have a bigger "CRUSH."
youtube
SRS Cinema has picked up War of the Ninja Monsters: Jaron vs. Goura, the latest no-budget spectacular from Shinpei Hayashiya. The two monsters are basically Godzilla and Gamera, one-upping Giant Monsters Appear in Tokyo, which never showed its Godzilla and Gamera expies outside of the poster. Hopefully it'll be less headache-inducing than God Raiga vs. King Ohga: War of the Monsters. SRS is aiming to release it on Blu-ray and VHS in early 2024, with a DVD to follow later in the year.
Tumblr media
Hoshi 35, Megumi Odaka's return to live-action film, opened in Japan on October 21. A new trailer is out too. SRS Cinemas has an existing relationship with production company 3Y, which previously made The Great Buddha Arrival and Nezura 1964, so I'd expect them to license this one too.
youtube
This Netflix ad for an online convention of sorts includes the first snippets of footage from Ultraman Rising, the Tsuburaya/ILM animated film it's distributing next year. The animation is miles above the Netflix Ultraman anime, that's for sure.

Here Comes Garfield: The Fantastic Funnies (A Comission For Emma Fici)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people! And welcome one and all to Here Comes Garfield, my look at all things garfield. For the rest of the year this feature will mostly be a look at the 11 garfield specials, minus babes and bullets which I covered previously, as well as his appearence in Cartoon All Stars to the Rescue for last 420.
So for those just joining us: I'm a lifelong comic strip nerd, ever since my dear Aunt Paula gave me her spare copy of the Indespensible Calvin and Hobbes in the 3rd grade. From there I slowly glommed on to other strips over the years: From FoxTrot, to Doonesbury, to Get Fuzzy to Zits to Cul De Sac, to recent faviorites like Pheobe and Her Unicorn, Crabgrass, the Steenz version of Heart and the City, and Breaking Cat News, which i'm wrapping a huge retrospective of soon, and whose place this retrospective is taking on my friend Emma's Patreon slot.
I love talking about this fine art, fitting your best work in just 4 panels, all the wonderful characters many simply don't know exist, all the weird shit that happens.. it's good stuff. So naturally I also gained a love for specials based on them. And while I loved the Peanuts ones and will climb THAT massive mountain someday, as a tween.. my faviorites were Garfield's and it's how I fell in love with the fat cat, the cool cat the nobody's cool cat.
While younger me did like garfield as a strip, especially that one arc where Garfield gets caught in a window blind and it conttinues to suck in an escalating number of people
Tumblr media
Truly the "Snoopy's Awkward Nephew" of Garifield comics. Pure art. But while I liked it, it was watching the specials on the DVD garfield as himself that sucked me into the character. The DVD"s were released around the time of the first movie and releases of Garfiled and Friends to cash in and they certainly got my money. 12 specials, all ranging from excellent to watchable, and all wil lbe covered this year.
However before I can tell you that story, I have to tell you this story: See while Here Comes Garfield was Garfield's first SPECIAL.. it wasn't his first apperance in animation. Two years before that Garfield lept onto screens and into the inky depths of animation with a short but scene stealing apperance in the 1980 special the Fantastic Funnies, an apperance I honestly didn't even know existed till recently, but is such a weird and important piece of garfield history I had to cover it and Emma was on board to comission it.
So what exactly IS the fantastic funnies you may ask. Well i'll tell you.. you may ask. The Fantastic Funnies was a sequel to the earlier special The Fabulous Funnies, a celebration of comic strips interviewing various creators and including a live action on animated bit with Rob Reiner. I haven't seen it but if there's enough intrest I might cover it. The special was a hit for NBC, with CBS regretting having passed over the idea when animation maestro and peantus producer Lee Mendelson suggested it. After they remembered he'd pitched it and they'd been stupid at all of course, as is the executive way. They called dibs on the next time.
The next time was 12 years and an animated series that didn't do so good later, and CBS was front and center for the Fantastic Funnies, taking the concept but spiffing it up: this time the interviews were, with two exceptions, each accompanied by an animated short, there was an animated bit to start it off, and we also got a few musical numbers and live performances from the broadway cast of annie.. well two of the broadway cast of annie bu tthat's still more of the broadway cast of annie than has been on this blog so touche Fabulous Funnies, touche. It's the most 70's thing to come out of 1980 and i'll be covering the whole thing under the cut.
Fantastic Funnies is hosted by Loni Anderson, who at the time was on CBS' hit WKRP in Cincinatti.. and what i've seen of it is excellent. She hasn't really done anything else i've seen, but she seems nice enough.
This makes it awkward as hosting wise she feels shoved into the special. The script she's given feels awkward, with her only genuine enthuasim coming from Barney Google. I honestly wish I could be as jazzed about Barney Google and his go go gooogly eyes as Loni Anderson apparently was in 1980. I AM that jazzed about Snoopy's awkard teenage nephew
Tumblr media
But it's not the same alas.
I can't even blame her as anderson was already frustrated with her pay for the series she did do and would demand more from the network leading to a brief exit from WKRP. I can't be too hard on her for not giving a fuck about an extra gig they saddled her with she didn't ask for with a script written by a block of wood on several pounds of qualudes. She did her best under the circumstances.
The circumstances also include getting animated as a cartoon, lucky, and getting to introduce a panel of various comic strip all stars of the time.
Tumblr media
Okay so going row by row, with the strips self titled unless otherwise stated.
Front Row: Charlie Brown and Lucy (Peanuts), Nipper (Wee Pals), Dennis the Menace (US Comic), Nancy and Sluggo and Little Orphan Annie. Second Row: Blondie and Dagwood, Dick Tracey, Barney Google (Snuffy Smith), Alley Oop and Prince Valiant
Third Row: Pogo, Tumbleweeds, miss Peach, B.C., Beetle Bailey
Back row: Michael Doonesbury (Doonesbury), Broom Hilda, Drabble, Cathy and Hagar the Horrible
And in their own section because dogs apparently don't get bleacher seats at Walden, where I assume this is taking place as the only college out of these strips, we also get the dogs and one very special cat in their own section.
Tumblr media
So Snoopy, Daisy (Blondie), Fred Basset and Garfield who are all about to throw down when Lonnie announces they have to get back to the human world for the show. But before that a song they all prepared, and it was at this point in the special I had to ask myself the tough question:
Tumblr media
I still don't know. But yes the song is like living in a living nightmare and I don't care for it. It's thankfully short and Broomhilda takes them all to the real world. But that's a story for another day
Tumblr media
Sadly not that day.
For now the special settles int' it's formula: Lonnie introduces a cartoonist, they talk about how their strip came to be, we get an animated segment about it. The only exceptions to the last part are Wee Pals, which instead has it's creator voice over one of his strips directly and Prince Valliant, who gets jack shit.
It was at this point I also realized a bit of an issue. While I mentioned my love of comic strips.. most of the ones I adore come from the late 70's onward, with Doonesbury and Peanuts being the big exceptions. I don't have anything against strips from before that time, I've read what I could of Pogo and want to read more and Krazy Kat is still well loved for a reason. I've also recently gained an appreceation of popeye thanks to Randy Millholand's take on the franchise.
The thing is I started devouring every comic strip I coudl in the 2000's. It was a great time for that as every strip got at least ONE collection, so even if you didn't read the newspapers, you could get a sample of a wide range of strips in book form. Boondocks even got a hilarious title out of it for it's first book.
Tumblr media
So I got to sample a wide range of strips, many of which I still read today: Get Fuzzy, Zits Pooch Cafe, For Better or For Worse, Baldo, La Cucaracha, Cul De Sac, Lio, Luann, Rudy Park, Adam@Home. Many strips I first found in collection and binged later. Sadly this went down in the 2010's but thankfully the kids comics boom has meant many newer strips have gotten collections. It's why I have collections for heart of the city and crabgrass on my shelf.
But as you may of noticed... most of those either started in the 2000's or in the 90's. Most of the kings features based strips simply didn't get collections and thus I didnt' notice them.. and by the time I could i'd mostly heard of them by reputation as dinosaurs that would go on till the heat death of the universe via various legacy artists who wouldn't really change a thing.
And I do GET why: a lot of these legacy strips.. are ran by family members who want to honor the legacy and may simply not feel comfortable altering the strip too much. I'm not asking that dagwood suddenly become a t-rex... i'd love that, but I get i'm not everyone's target audience. Not every strip can be Pooch Cafe and go entirley off the rails AND still be every bit the strip it always was AND be good
Tumblr media
It's hard. So I do have some sympathy. It's not limitless: while I get not doing so say in the 2000's when handing your strip off to another cartoonist, let alone your DAD'S strip wasn't a thing unless they were going to stay the course, in the 2020's and late 2010's we've had a bunch of great reboots and soft reboots of legacy strips: Randy Millholand of Something Positive fame did such a fantastic job on popeye sundays he got a weekly slot with olive and popeye, giving other creators the chance to do their own olive oyl strip basically alongside his. Mark Tatulli got tired of doing heart of the city (Lio both continues and slaps hard) and rather than phone it in or end it, handed it over to the talented Steenz, whose work on the strip is both something entirley diffrent but something entirely fresh and fun with some tight continuity. Olivia James made people care about Nancy for the first time in decades and has a nice dry wit. And while Henry Barjas keeps the soapy stylings of gil thorpe and hasn't changed as much as his contemporaries he still isn't afraid to shake things up having Gil go through a divorce, get two new assitant coaches, a third assitant coach who was once his arch nemisis and making the teen cast far more diverse including trans and non binary characters, being one of the few creators to do so in comic stripery.
While I don't want you going after these old men, and please for the love of god DO NOT GO AFTER THESE MEN. I do not want that. I may gripe, but these seem like decent guys just ones who won't evolve and have no reason to. I'm just outlining why maybe i'd rather read strips that keep growing with age or have fresh new voices rather than "Dagwood still hasn't left the 1950's and when theyt ry to it's embarassing for everyone involved. "
I.. didn't mean for this to turn into a screed on legacy comics that never really changed but it makes it all the more special tha ta lot of these creation stories for these comics still fascinated me.
The big standout was Wee Pals, a strip I hadn't heard of as it ended in 2002. Wee Pals was created by Morrie Turner, a cartoonist and protege of Charles Schultz who bemoaned the lack of black characters in the newspapers. Charles told him why not make one, and Wee Pals came about, with Turner diversifying the cast to drum up intrest creating one of the more diverse casts in earlier comic strips as a result. Nowadays it's a tad quaint, but I can't fault the man for trying to make comic strips less white and i'm glad I know this pioneer exist. I'm also mildly annoyed his strip wasn't animated, as it was one of the funneist present, with our heroes talking about one's pet chameleon.
There were other intresting stories too: Cathy Guthwise based Cathy on her own life, just changing Cathy's job from cartoonist to "whatervers funnier". Broom Hilda, a strip about a wtich, was something his creator tried pitching as an add character first. IT's small stuff but it always fascinates me how a strip comes about.
The only outright hilarous one is Johnny Hart, who kept trying to sell a caveman character, his friends asked him to put up or shut up so in his words "He drank 4 beers and the caveman slowly came into focus." He just.. outright got hammered to fuck because that was a normal thing in 1980 and created a classic comic strip out of it that later became obessed with jesus. Amazing.
The interviews are neat and while I may not like these strips I respect their creators.. and the creator of Hagar for putting on a viking helmet. Good stuff.
As for the animated segmets.. their eh. Like I said most of these strips are pretty gag a day and it seems like the shorts just flat out animated a strip. Which can work as it does for the raeson we're all here, garfield will come soon I promise, but for the most part it just dosen't land for me
In two cases they just flat out take bits from pre existing specails: For Doonesbury they take a bit of Joanie at the daycare.
For those less drenched in the deep and complex lore of doonesbury as the werido who has a ton of print books and bought digitals of strips he already had and books he already bought years ago just to have a copy on kindle: Joanie Caucuss was once a house wife, who got tired of it and her husband clinton and hitched the first ride she could away from his sexist ass. That ride happened to be with strip lead Mike and his best friend and revolutinary Mark on a motorcycle trip to find america. They took her back with them, she joined them at their commune, and soon got a job in daycare while trying to become a law student, which is the status quo the special used. Soon after she'd become a law student, head to berkley, find the love of her life and a long LONG list of other stuff up to present day where she works as a campaign manager on occasion during her alleged retirement.
Tumblr media
It's not a bad bhit, but I get the sense they wanted to pick the least political thing they could.. yet weirdly DIDN'T go with the musical number or the dinner the group have. Or you know just accept doonesbury is political and include frank discussions of the 60's in this special.
For Peanuts, they just include an animated bit of snoopy singing suppertime from your a good man charlie brown. It's new animation far as I can tell, as the bit wasn't in any of the specials and they woudlnt' adapt the musical till the mid 80s. It's fine I just question why they didn't recycle anything from the specials.
Finally Cathy is from it's special, but fits, with her "wanting to have it all". A very cathy joke and frankly had I not found out she has three specails, i would not have been able to tell.
As for the other material either recycled from the fabulous funnies or made for this special, i'm going in no paticular order.
Beetle Bailey: Beetle runs away from sarge to try and get out of doing the obstacle course
Tumblr media
Hagar the horrible has a trite bit about his wife telling him to take out the garbage VIKINGS DON'T DO THAT. YOU SO SILLY HAGAR.
Dennis the Menace keeps drawing out bed time because kids do that, even immortal children who aren't all that menacing.
By now your starting to get what a mountain it was to climb this special: short interview, unfunny skit, short interview unfunny skit, rinse repeat, toss away my sanity. I TRY to be positive on this blog, try not to be a dickhead.. but this special is so damn boring half the time. The interviews are kinda neat but the animated bits are just.. so lame.
So as a break let's talk what else the special did to fill time. Loni Anderson sang the radio themes to Popeye and Little Orphan Annie. IN the former's case.. that's all you gets. No adventure, no high seas just her singing the popeye theme. We dont' even get a musical number from the popeye movie because it hadn't happene dyet. I want to hear bluto say i'm mean over and ove rand over again. I"m that desperate.
Annie DOES get the cast of the broadway show, a huge hit then and forever, to do two numbers, both iconic and both well performed: The first is I dont' Need Anything But YOu, the cute duet between Annie and Warbucks, and then of course Tommorow best sung by bill the cat.
Tumblr media
But the kid they use here does pretty good herself. They have it sung at the only playground in budget for some reason, but they did their best.
We also get a truly batshit bumber about peopl eneeding their funnies, from reading them as they go down the fire pole to IN A MOVING CAR. Yes even serial murderers need their funnies as they mow down pedestrians. It's nature's way. I do relate to tha tboost you get from reading them every day, I do so and I have to use three diffrent sites: one for andrews mcmeel, one for king features, and one for the webbcomic kevin and kell. So I get it. Three's also a closing number I ran away form.
The final non torture bit is Johnny Fever from WKRP. Due to a news strike he's tasked iwth reading the comics and drmatically reads flash gordon. Howard Hessman is hilarous as always, the bit is fucking great, and it woke me up after several strip adaptions put me to sleep. good stuff.
Back to my cycle of torment, and we have a Blondie cartoon and one of the few animated bits in the specail that was intresting. And unintetionally hilarous as Blondie gets dagwood THIS haircrime done to him.
Tumblr media
What makes it funny is that not only is this haircut too much even for the 70's, but Blondie LOVES it, as do the kids.. despite all three of them having never updated their styles. Granted Blondie's hair game is timeless, so I get her point but it's just a .. weird plot to pick for blondie.
Naturallyt his being blondie instead of forcusing on the problem of "his wife wants him to try a hair cut that makes him not feel himself" it's in part him worried tha this friends and co workers will laugh. I mean they will, it's as if Luke Skywalkers hair started to eat into his brain, but that shoudln't be your takeaway and him washing it out while Blondie's alseep solves nothing and isn't funny. "Haha he can't be honest with his wife and she's going to later cite this incident to thier marriage counclier". Granted I would ENTIRELY read Dagwood's hair causing a divorce between them, but i'm not sure that's an arc Blondie readers want. I do wnat reprints of golden age blondie as it apparently involved Dagwood having to get disinherited to marry blondie, getting drunk, and other soap opera stuff more intresting than Dagwood trying to single white female mark hamill. Huh now THAT'S a Disney + series i'd watch. get on it disney
The other really fun one is Marmaduke. This one's just kidna fucked up. Marmaduke want sto go sleep in the same bed with the kids, which can somehow fit all three and is adorable so I don't get why not, but the dad tries to make him go outside because that was the thing with dogs. It hasn't aged terribly with charlie brown because snoopy clearly likes having his own pad and the inside is larger than most mansions, let alone the brown house
Tumblr media
And when the whole thing burned down in one of the more sobering strips in the series run
Tumblr media
Charlie Brown dutifully helped him plan his new house
Tumblr media
Honestly I could talk about Snoopy's house burning down all day but it's not what you came for. You came to hear me tell you how it relates to Marmaduke. My point is Marmaduke just has a regular ass Dog House, and just wants to sleep in bed. I get this was normal at the time, it used to be the norm that dogs woudln't sleep in bed.. but my Dog YOshi curls up on my mom' sbed every night and maddie, my other dog , only dosen't when she's not on her own bed restfully asleep as she is as I type this. what i'm saying is maybe just maybe forcing dogs to live outside at night was cruel jackassery and maybe letting the big old dog curl up at the foot of the bed or, if he prefers tucked in while old man bastard can sleep outside and think about his life choices. Also i'm shocked this wasn't the plot of either marmaduke movie. It's so perfect. One man's journey to be a better dog owner .. or Marmaduke repeadely hitting him in the nuts with a tennis ball machine and other various objects. I"m not picky. Also i'm not touching either of those films unless someone pays me the 15 dollars it'd take to comissoin it. I'll review plenty of garbage on my own time, but I have limits. Pete Davidson is very much a hard and fast one. Owen Wilson is fine though. We love owen in this house.. but even he can' save cgi marmaduke and we all know that.
Pogo also takes a bit from the then upcoming film I go Pogo.. a guy I don't know tries to take two passing critters for a ride using the old shell game.. only to have put something under every one. i'ts a nice joke and it works well, and the gorgeous claymation. Given it's both election based and based on a comic i'd like to know better, me reviewing that .. would still be 15 if anyone wants it but far less of my own personal hell. But i'm more likely to do that one on my own. Fun fact: pogo's election storyline's inspired bloom counties, which I will be covering this year or at the very least the 1984 one.
BC has some bit with a turtle. It sure does exist
Broom Hilda asks who the fairest in the land is and her mirror calls her second. She responds by breaking it. This bit.. was actually funny. I'm not sure Broom Hilda would be for me as it's main gag seems to be "Gee isn't a woman chasing men against their will funny" which
Tumblr media
Same other way around or with non binary folks. But I did like this and her horning in on mike's close up
Tumblr media
She looks like she's about to hit on him but adorably so and he looks just.. so done with it as he always is. I mean.. I can't have turned out worse than Mike's actual first marriage. his second is pretty ballin though.
Mama has her Son say that life is a song.. onlyf or her to sing about him neglecting him. Get it because guilt tripping is funny! This is apparently most of what Mama is.
Tumblr media
Finally before our main event we have tumbleweeds with sexual harassment as some lady refuses to let tumbleweeds go. And that's not me being lazy that's his actual name. Though to it's creator's credit he retired rather than let it become "a zombie strip", so good on him.
Okay now for what you all came to see
Tumblr media
Also garfield
Garfield's first aniamted special was MOSTLY worth the pilgramage here. While ti's only a few strips repeated, it's fascinating for just how diffrent it is from Here comes Garfield a few years later.
For starters the Fantastic Funnies used an early design for our faviorite cat, not the iconic entirely weird by this point earliest garfield but one more in between, not quite upright yet, but not nearly as realistic as day 1 garfield.
Tumblr media
To the classic peanuts team of Mendelson and Mendez's credit they did a wondreful job, likely why they were chosen to produce the specials till the companies backing peanuts asked them to stop helping out rival specails, and this version of garfield heavily resembles what he was like in the strip this frame is based on
Tumblr media
It's also telling how fast Jim Davis was evolving the special that by the time it aired Garfield had already changed his look up a bit, if still not fully to his more classic 80s look.
Tumblr media
It's not a HUGE change, just a little thinner, with the bigger change being in how he sit's/stands
Tumblr media
It's just a testament to how slowly but surely the character evolved in apperance over his first decade or so and part of what makes this intreresting: while the specials help chart this evolution, and helped cause it as Jim needed to draw Garfield with SKinnier legs for the opening dance number of here comes garfield, it's nice to have this bit of his evolution frozen in amber.
The voices behind the characters are intresting: to my shock Thom Huge ALWASY voiced john and basically only stopped doing it when he retired. Thom did voices for commericals and was an old frat brother of Jim Davis who Davis asked for help with this special. While the producers would recast huge for Here Comes Garfield, he sent them a tape and became THE voice of john in the same way Lorenzo Music became THE voice of garfield.
WHile that's weird enough... what makes this special stand out besides the earlier designs... is Garfield's Voice. It's not Lorenzo Music, who would DEFINE the character in my eyes and is THE garfield, no question, though Frank Welker and Bill Murray are admirable.. but Radio DJ and voice guy Scott Beach.
Beach is take is intresting as both Murray and Welker clearly take from Music, while Beach largely does his own thing. Instead of the dry, sarcastic bored tone Lorenzo perfected, Beach has that but it sounds more like Jean Shepard'ss narration in a christmas story. Shepard isn't bad but his voice for Garfield is less relaxed, mor ebooming and confident. It dosen't COMPLETELY fit and makes the short feel a tad weird.. but it's also hard to judge the voice as, like I said EVERY voice after took cues from Music. he left the perfect blueprint. The fact Chris Pratt isn't that dry, sarcastic , laid back voice the character has been defined by hasn't helped his case voicing the character at the time of this review. Beach does a good job, but he just didn't quite fit and it's hard to compare a 2 minute performance with dozens of hours worth of material from Music. Beach did a decent job, but he just wasn't the right guy for the part, simple as that. his voice just didn't fit Garfield's give no fuck nature that well.
Finally we have the specific strips adapted. nd the garfield wiki was a huge help here. Seriously fan wikis can have a bad rap but many are done by dedicated people who save me a LOT of work and do a lot of through research> Kudos guys, thanks for your help. So the wiki has each strip adapted. Excluding the "I have feet? " one we have
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not bad choices: they get all the garfiled bases: he dosen't like catching mice, likes food and Jon weight shames him a lot. Simple, quick and well done.
Overall the garfield shorts for this special are excellent. It's a short bit but it gets the character down and it's easy to see why, despite being the new kid on the block at only two years old at the time, garfield's the one who go ta specail out of the deal.
Now does he make the specail worth watching?
Tumblr media
I mean if you like comic strip history like me, you'll get something out of it. There's a bit on the inductees into the hall of fame, but even then it's a long slog of interviews that are fairly short and shorts that are both short and tedious. The good bit here or there cannot save this.
Other than Garfield .. there really isn't much to write home about for the casual viewer or if your a fan of Peanuts and Doonesbury like I am, as both bits can be found elswhere. It's easier to either fast forward to the bit with a comic you like or find the garfield bits in their own little video, of which there are plenty. I'm glad I reviewed the special.. but it just hasn't aged well and probably wasn't that fun to begin with. Even as much as I ranted about how much I didn't know the strips.. i'ts still presented so dryly even if it had strips I liked more in it, it'd still be a bit of a slog. There's just not enough genuinely good stuff or loveable nonsense to keep this afloat. Skip the special but DO check out the early garfield stuff. It's brilliant.
Next Time: The first proper special as Garfield must save Odie from the pound.. after he grooves to Lou Rawls a bit. As is nature's way. Thanks for reading.

But, I was happy knowing the way Niigaki-san movies when singing; It was too cute when Takahashi-san and Niigaki-san sent out hearts, in any case, it was wonderful!

I hate that streaming services permanently delete content from their catalogs! Sure, maybe they weren't successful but I can like them all the same. And now they don't even produce DVDs anymore, so there are so many shows (and movies) that end up lost forever. (variety*com/2023/digital/news/disney-plus-hulu-content-removed-willow-dollface-1235618280/)
Link. Disney is following WBD and purging contents from their library. Half the reason is to save cost and slow down hemorrhaging money from operation cost. The other half the reason is to reduce sale loss long term.
Streamers initally didn't release contents on DVDs because they were afraid it will undermine their streaming services. Now by removing contents, it breaks the trust with subscribers, who signed up for the access to said library.
But I doubt these are gone forever, some of them are going to be rented out to third party platforms like Amazon Prime and Tubi and even broadcast channels. Just like the old days when the major studios rotate movies and tv shows for decades, because they know too much choice is almost as bad as not enough choice and both end up with the same result - less or slow sale.
When people have too much choice, often times they can't make up their mind and just walk away without buying anything. It's partly by people are starting to ditch streaming and go back to cable, there's too much stuff on streaming.
So fear not Anon, i think the shows you like will show up in another platform as streamers start licensing their contents to 3rd party platforms, just like in the old days.

Eeeeee thank you @robo-dino-puppy <3 <3 <3
Last song: I think something from a Guild Wars soundtrack (stopped enjoying most lyric music maybe a decade ago, so it's usually soundtracks around here)
Currently watching: Finally trying ST Voyager (lol "I'm not a trekkie!" she emphatically insisted as she got sucked into her 3rd iteration of the show), also have a backlog of various mystery series in other languages waiting to get watched because a local thrift shop is oddly well stocked in specialty DVDs, and also I'm starting to watch Xena but have some ear problems so those trademark battle outbursts are a struggle
Currently reading: Witcher graphic novels, which is a minor miracle because 1) my head is useless for basically all recreational reading anymore, and 2) graphic novels usually don't compute, but here we are
Current obsession: not really any specific fannish obsessions right now because my focus is a little split…just randomly vibing out with fractured game replays and trying to get back into taking screenshots (mostly HZD/HFW and AC Odyssey) and I guess waiting for AC Mirage to get released
Not gonna tag anyone but y'all feel free to join in if you like the vibes. <3 <3 <3

Since we are just about THREE weeks away (as of THIS SUNDAY!) until the Season 2 premiere of "When Hope Calls" on Great American Family on Sunday, April 6th, I figured it would be the perfect moment to address the THREE most frequently asked questions about the show.
Before I share those questions, though, I couldn't resist sharing above the new "When Hope Calls" Season 2 poster Great American Family released yesterday, especially since I know many of you are just as excited as I am about the new season!
The actors and actresses featured in the poster are Cindy Busby, Christopher Russell, Wendy Crewson, Hannake Talbot, Sarah Fisher, Jon McClaren, and Nick Bateman.
(Reminder: For those of you who stream on Pure Flix, you'll be able to watch early on Thursday, April 3rd!)
Alright, let's take a closer look into the three most popular questions I've come across regarding "When Hope Calls." I'll do my best to provide answers for each one.
The first question is…
Where can I watch Season 1 of "When Hope Calls"?
Season 1 of "When Hope Calls" can be streamed through Hallmark+ - click here for details (The service currently offers a 7-day free trial).
Amazon Prime also offers a low price to Buy Season 1 to stream - click here for details.
Or if you prefer, the first season of "When Hope Calls" is also available on DVD through Amazon - click here for details.
The Christmas episodes of "When Hope Calls," which are considered to be the first two episodes of Season 2, can be streamed through Great American Pure Flix - click here for details. (The service currently offers a 7-day free trial for new members)
The 2nd most asked question…
Will Great American Family air Season 1 of "When Hope Calls" before airing Season 2?
Unfortunately, Great American Family doesn't have the rights to the first season of "When Hope Calls" at this time. The show originally premiered on Hallmark's streaming platform before being broadcast on the Hallmark Channel. Currently, the only way to view the first season of "When Hope Calls" is through Hallmark+, unless, of course, an agreement is eventually reached between the networks.
Great American Family does own the rights to their two Christmas episodes that start off season 2. This means there's a chance they might air those episodes before the April premiere, so let's be sure to keep an eye on the schedule!
The third most asked question…
Will any of the actors from the first season of "When Hope Calls" be making a return for season two?
The answer to that is… YES! Among the new characters seen in the poster above, you will also see several familiar faces in season two.
Actors returning include:
Morgan Kohan Ryan-James Hatanaka
Kalinka Petrie Wendy Crewson
Jefferson Brown Hanneke Talbot

Subject: its a dangerous bussiness walking out your front door Time: 2:09 am. ive been thinking so much about mortality lately. i dont know why. skip this if you are looking for pictures of boys in mario suits. i have been having a hard time of dealing with things on a daily basis. just the most normal decisions seem like so much to me. like i imagine a car crash and then what if you had made the decision to not get in the car or walk. like its always there but not really. i need a scarf and a hood to keep these thoughts quiet inside my head. right now they are telling on splotched eyes. its embarrassing. ive been having dream night after night of dying alone. it is the worst thing i can think of right this second. god. i hope i get it together. i hope everybody does.
EDIT: the glue isnt even dry on the pity party invitations. but i mean "die alone" in the sense of that is what happens to anyone, at least anyone who isnt clutching the hand of the person that loves them at that moment.
there is gonna be an accompanying portion on the back of the new cd--- i dont know know how to explain it... but its definitely going to address alot of this.

So I saw the Deadpool & Wolverine film a couple of days ago. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, and I might go to see it in the theaters for a second time eventually. There was so much to see that with my ADHD and memory issues, I keep getting new flashbacks about scenes in the film all day long, and there are several conversations I wish I could rewatch because they spoke to me but I DON'T REMEMBER WHAT THEY SAID :DDDDDDDD
So I either go see the film again (let's see what my executive dysfunctions says to that), or wait until it's released on bluray which is probably gonna take a couple of months still.
Anyway, since this is an MCU film now, I started thinking about, well, MCU. I wanna say "a few years back" but it was probably more like, almost 10 years ago cos wtf is time; anyway, back then I at some point had a flu and when I'm sick, I usually spend my time sitting on a sofa wrapped in blankets and watch movies. That winter I was bored and decided to give a try to some earlier MCU films that were on Netflix back then (I had already seen Iron Man, which I liked; and The Avengers, which I hated, and only liked Loki because I just like antihero-type characters and I related to him a bit too much as I was a bitter 21-year-old who was so bored of living in everyone's shadow lol), and I kinda hyperfixated on those. So much so I grew so desperate that I bought the missing movies on DVD only because I NEEDED to see more in order to see the rest on Netflix, and a few from the middle was missing, and I in no way could watch them cos I needed everything to be in the chronological order.
Later I ended up buying every single MCU film on bluray despite hating the Phase One apart from the Iron Man films. Also my sister kept buying me them for Christmas etc.
This ended somewhere in 2019 or 2020, because the last MCU bluray on my shelf is that second Spider-Man film that I don't remember the name of because they all are named so similarly it took me ages to realize there even was a third film out there. And I still don't like majority of the films until Phase Three, where I thought the films started to finally get some character. But there are still some films that just... are not that good. Some of them I have watched multiple times, but with some it makes my ADHD kick in and I just want to roll on the floor in agony when I just think about watching them for the second time cos they are so uninteresting or boring.
So looks like I have not seen a single film from the Phase Four on. The first film was released in 2021 (according to Wikipedia), and honestly, looking at that list of films makes me go both "WTF??????? WHO TF IS THAT???" and "oh whyyyyyyyy D:" and I am torn between my obsession with chronological order - in order to watch something, I HAVE TO watch anything that got released before it. Except that I don't want to. I don't give a fuck about most of those characters and their own movies. Also I have heard so much shit about many of these later films that I feel like they would not even be worth my time.
So might actually change this and maybe one day I will watch the ones that truly interest me. Especially the 4th Thor film. I hated the first two so much (they are not very romance-repulsed-friendly as they literally focus on nothing but Thor and his girlfriend), but the third film was really good because they left out all the useless romance nonsense and made an actually funny and interesting movie. And since the 4th is from the same director, I feel like it could be an okay film too.
I also like Antman's character in MCU and the first film, but I don't remember shit from the second one and I don't know if the third one is any good. But might check that out eventually. Oh and Guardians of the Galaxy films I have always liked, so the 3rd one sounds interesting as well.
Anyhow, Deadpool & Wolverine literally was the first MCU film I have seen since that second Spider-Man (oh and would like to see the third one too!), and then I did watch both seasons of Loki, which I did like actually. So apart from those, I know absolutely nothing about the current state of MCU. I'm sometimes a bit annoyed that DP got added to MCU, but at the same time it gives him so much more freedom to refer to different characters or even meet then in possible future films, just like what happens in the comics all the time. Tho, even with comics I'm often getting annoyed when they put Avengers in the stories cos I'm not here for Avengers, I'm here for Deadpool, so fuck off from my phone screen. Honestly would like to see DP interact move with the X-Men, or even Spider-Man, cos these were THE older Marvel films I grew up with and which I'm way more attached to than the dumbster fire called MCU.

FELIX THE CAT: THE MOVIE's Release Date
Did you know that I am unusually very fascinated by the wack-ass film that is FELIX THE CAT: THE MOVIE?
Tumblr media
I remember seeing at least one commercial for this movie back in the late '90s/early '00s on Toon Disney, but never actually saw the film. I just remember seeing a cartoony cat running around a jungle or something, presumably this was one of the scenes from the early act of the film where the magical teardrop finds Felix on Earth.
Weirdly, Disney at the time had the distribution rights to the film in the US. They gave it a video release under the Buena Vista Home Video label in August 1991, and aired it on The Disney Channel and Toon Disney for a good while before the rights eventually went to someone else. The film hasn't seen a second US video release in any form - be it DVD, Blu-ray, digital, etc., but...
It was recently uploaded in its entirety to YouTube by the official Felix the Cat YT channel... as the character/franchise have been owned by Universal for a while. DreamWorks Animation had bought Felix's previous owners, Classic Media, and then Comcast bought DreamWorks. The film is shown in a weird matted form, presumably what it would've looked like in theaters. It was standard practice back then to take a film animated and shot at 1.33:1 - the Academy aspect ratio, and then stretch it so it fit cinema screens in a post-CinemaScope world. As a result, stuff is chopped off of the top and bottom of the picture. Track down that VHS or a foreign DVD, and you get the full ratio.
But also, curiously, the film is presented in the correct speed. Most YouTube uploads of FELIX THE CAT: THE MOVIE, or scenes from it, are sourced from a PAL release. And most of the time, a weird sound mix of the movie where you can't always hear the dialogue and the 'Who Is The Boss' song drowned out by the audience of scrunkly bunko creatures.
Yeah, I lowkey kinda LIKE this movie. Even if it is *legendary* for its... Well... Unusual qualities. So much so that I kinda know some of the release history of it...
Well... Almost?
When was this movie first released?
The first concrete date that I know of was its presentation at the 3rd Los Angeles Animation Celebration: January 26, 1989.
The film was completed in around early 1987. It was to be distributed by New World Pictures, as their logo does appear on some prints of the film. Thanksgiving 1988 was thought to be a release frame for it in the US, which curiously would've put it up against an animation duel that was already set to unfold - OLIVER & COMPANY vs. THE LAND BEFORE TIME. Supposedly, a release some time in 1990 was also considered.
A US theatrical release never materialized. The first wide release of it in America was Disney/Buena Vista's VHS release of it on - again - August 23, 1991.
Various European territories got it in theaters around that time. It received a theatrical release in the UK in mid-to-late 1990, per the BBFC's classification for it issued on July 5th of that year, implying a late summer/fall release took place. There is a theatrical poster for the UK release, too.
But the earliest confirmed date appears to be that LA Animation Celebration date. Right at the beginning of 1989...
However, it is often suggested that the movie appeared *somewhere* to the public or an audience in late 1988. An October 1988 frame has been floated around for years, supposedly this thing debuted at a film festival called MIFED in Italy around that time... But I've found little to no evidence of that. IMDb, which anyone can edit, claims this along with 1988 release dates elsewhere.
The film is copyrighted 1988, but that doesn't mean much considering that a copyright date can differ from a release date. Especially back then, but even recently as well. (Pixar's ONWARD - for example - was a March 2020 release, but the copyright date in the end credits is 2019.)
So... Did FELIX THE CAT: THE MOVIE show up somewhere in fall 1988? 35 years ago? Or was the official debut of this picture on January 26, 1989?
Is this like the SUPER MARIO BROS. US release date of animated movies or something?

The present this time was corn bread🌽
Its fluffy, slightly sweet and delicious (Sweet corn)
Its what I had for breakfast this morning as well🌽
My mother, Shapes the bread by weighing it in grams, there is just about no difference in between them but,
even then,
its like, which one looks good~🧐🧐
There were those examining which one to take, it was really cute lol
And in most cases the deciding factor was the color of the tie on the bag lol
This time Ako-chan immidiately ate hers, Ishida-san I ate it! Ishida-san it was delicious! She let me know both of those immediately😂
Also in the seat next to me and during the MC was Nonaka, Nonaka ate it while next to me saying "Nonaka's is also fluffy~"🤭
There were those who were like, Should I take it home and eat it, Should I eat it on the spot,
Even though I can only give one of that size, Rairi told me, that she ate it with her family and that it was delicious🫶🏻 lol Its cute, I'm happy
Really, thank you everyone for taking one…🫶🏻
Also thank you mother…👏🏻
