I mostly think this poll is hilarious (and some people are taking it way, way too seriously) but it’s starting to get really weird how often people on the opposite side are dismissing Gundam — a giant of science fiction that remade a genre in its image — and quite literally lying about Suletta and Miorine. I’ve seen people claim they were canonically married to men, people claim the show’s ending was rewritten by interns, claim they never hugged, and other claims regarding them not being canon.
While Bandai and Kadokawa did censor one interview, and Bandai released an “open to interpretation” statement, these no longer hold true. Official material has henceforth referred to them as married. One instance of censorship and a statement they’ve clearly walked back on does not erase the fact that the show itself heavily emphasizes their wedding rings, refers to Miorine as Eri’s sister-in-law, and makes it abundantly clear that they are married.
“I knew I was going to make an epilogue, but it was a while before I decided upon the exact number of years that should pass in-between. The ending itself follows “The Tempest,” and depicts Suletta and Miorine getting married and becoming partners.”
- Hiroshi Kobayashi
They are completely and unambiguously canon, and arguably were never decanonized to begin with given the literal text of the show.
An addendum to this: I’ve also seen a strange dismissal of the history that G-Witch pulls from.
The original Gundam inspired Revolutionary Girl Utena, with Lalah Sune in particular (the creator of an iconic Gundam archetype) serving as the inspiration for Anthy Himemiya. Gundam has had a queer fanbase for decades, and has had gay characters (with Yoshiyuki Tomino himself confirming this) since the 1990s.
G-Witch draws from Gundam’s extensive, genre-shaking history, classics like Utena and Rose of Versailles, and Shakespeare’s The Tempest. It brings Gundam and Utena’s connection full circle, and is in conversation with every Gundam series that came before it.
It’s unfair to dismiss it as just some random show, or — as I’ve seen some do — credit its open queerness to the influence of completely unrelated American media, as if Japan is utterly devoid of gay people.
#alex.txt#they refer to each other as bride and groom from episode one onwards.#gundam the witch from mercury#g witch#suletta mercury#sulemio#miorine rembran#racism and misogyny absolutely factor into this#as well as a disturbing trend of western centrism#are most of the people opposing sulemio like this?#of course not. most are just voting for the pairing they enjoy.#but for the minority i’ve seen being truly vile?#and being hideously dismissive?#please examine why it’s the interracial lesbian couple#from a japanese production#that you’re treating as lesser#compared to two white american men

Sick Day Since it's the time of the year again where my instagram feed is flooded with memes about how everyone is getting sick and I start avoiding people even more than usual cause I almost died from pneumonia once, I got inspired to do some doodling.
I already explored the hilarity of man-flu Severus Snape in the past, so now I ventured on to man-flu Aegon (because Aemond would probably just suffer in silence).
And for the people who can't decipher my atrocious handwriting:
Top left Aemond: Still not better? Aegon: F*ck off.
Top right Servant: Is it enough blankets, your grace? Aegon: *miserable sniff
Middle Aegon: *violent sneeze Aegon: Kill me, Aemond. Aemond: Don't be so dramatic, your grace. Aegon: Your king demands it. Aemond: Let's get you back to bed. Bottom Aemond: I should be at a council meeting...I can't move. Artist's notes: 1. After drawing the picture of blanket-pile Aegon, I noticed he looks like an Onigiri. A friend of mine called him an "Aegonigiri" and I hate myself for not thinking of this joke first. 2. For the picture where he's napping on Aemond's shoulder I'd like you to imagine the most obnoxious stuffy-nose snoring. 3. I'm in love with the green and gold color scheme.

People be like "Russia is not imperialistic"🤡 - and then the most famous Ukrainian chef cannot open a restaurant of the most famous Ukrainian cultural food in Japan, because Japanese widely consider borscht a Russian dish and so would avoid the restaurant thinking it to be Russian🫤🫤🫤🤯🤯🤯
#ukraine#japan#ukrainian culture#borscht#russian imperialism#russian invasion#ruscism#genocide#like.... thank you to Japanese for avoiding all Russian products#and for supporting Ukraine#this is not your fault#its fucking Russia's and its imperialism#moreover#the far East of Russia is where Russian regime forcefully displaced many Ukrainians#during Soviet times#so I am almost sure Japan actually learnt borsch from Ukrainians#they just belived it to be Russian cause it was coming from Russian territory near them🫤#culture appropriation#україна#укртумбочка#укртумба#укртамблер#ukrainian cuisine#yevhen klopotenko

Yesterday two of my coworkers were trying to get a stuck wheel off a 2-ton. One of them, who lives in a quite rural town, got it off in an unconventional way and said "that's an old farmer's trick." The other said "yeah, maybe a Jewish farmer."
I didn't quite hear what he said so I went up to him and asked, "hey, what was that you said about a Jewish farmer?" He said, "oh, I should've said a Polish farmer," and then reminded me that his family is from Poland. It wasn't until then that I realized the point of his joke was that "Jewish farmer" meant stupid or incompetent. He knows I'm Jewish, but he's a bit of a jokester and doesn't always think before he speaks. I'm wasn't sure what to say about it, and he seemed to know what he said was wrong, but I think it'll stick with me for a long time
#atlas entry#ftr I think it's more a product of him coming from a rural area than him being Polish#there's a culture of very casual low-level racism in a lot of the places near where I live#the first coworker. the one who made the “farmer's trick” remark. has done everything from referring to a Black coworker as “the Black boy”#to calling Japanese people the J word#and he's a huge asshole but I'm sure if you asked he'd tell you he's not hateful. and I think he believes it#that's just how a lot of people are raised#but yeah anyways this made me sad

He stood in the center of a busy street surrounded by extravagant lights, reds, greens, and whites all shining down on him and lighting up the area despite the late hour. The snow that had begun was light enough to not obscure the view quite yet; merely a small scattering of flurries before a potentially bigger storm. He stood with an uneven but genuine little smile as Mikoto held up his phone, peeking around the edge of it for a moment to smile back before snapping a picture.
A little moment that stuck with me from @lostxmelody 's beautiful fic, Life's Reflection! There were so many amazing scenes, but of course a big sap like me would latch onto this one...
#milgram#fuuta kajiyama#(the fic is x mikoto but theres not quite enough of him to tag here lol)#it was such a beautiful ending!! it was so wonderful seeing fuuta softer and happier and healthier --#i was so obsessed and really wanted to capture that ;---;#i really enjoyed the fic -- definitely go check it out!!#i Know mikotos phone would be in japanese but i was limited on my resources 😭#all the overlays/mockups online were from super old apple products?? i had to do this one manually with my partners phone lmao 😅#i was glad that the dates worked out though! :3#cant believe i drew a fuuta lockscreen at the same time triage hit 1M... i cant get rid of my pretty triage screen quite yet....#whats a girl to do.....

Tonight I cooked Nikujaga [x] which is a Japanese beef and potato stew that I’ve always wanted to attempt. My dad sat in the next room, backseat driving the entire cooking process (I went to check on the potatoes halfway through and he heard the lid coming off the pot and called ‘it won’t be cooked yet!’ I know because it is fucking halfway)
I couldn’t buy dashi, so I substituted beef stock. I didn’t have mirin or saké, so I used shaoxing instead. So it wasn’t authentically Japanese, but I thought it would be a good approximation. As I was mixing my flavourings in a jug, Dad appeared over my shoulder and shoved in a spoonful of something.
‘What was that?’
‘Bit of Bovril! That’ll make it nice and beefy.’
itadakimasu 🙏
#bovril if you don’t know is a beefy broth that you can make into a hearty hot drink#it is a profoundly british product#and it successfully masked any other flavours I had put in#why would you just put that into my recipe without asking#what’s the japanese for patricide#I was cooking with my big long chopsticks from HK and everything

Tasks done:
• stretching first thing in the morning
• worked 3.5 hours
• lecture/class 4.5 hours
• completed digital art assignment
• 10 mins Japanese Duolingo

The thing about being a Sonic fan is that you will routinely see posts about how X Sonic game is better in the original japanese and the english version ruined it
And then the game in question was originally done in English and JP was the localization
#Like don't get me wrong I'm also familiar with games/media from japan being originally put out in japan#but Sonic is a special case#a lot of games originally released in Japanese but a lot of them (especially nowadays) also are made and release in English first#Like you can't really become a true 'jp only because it's the original text' guy because it isn't. it isn't always the original text#Of course this is not to say that it's not neat to compare the versions to see what changed‚ or to prefer one over the other#''X Sonic game retranslated'' cool cool anyways answer quickly. Is the game originally in Japanese so you're doing your own translation of#the JP version or is this just 'I prefer jp over eng so I translated the jp localization of the eng into eng'#This also reminds me of the occasional person who reads JP idw or watches jp Sonic Prime and acts like it's original or holds more merit as#a version. As if you aren't just translating a localization of a production in English to English again

Apparently, they're making a Japanese adaptation of Love In The Air. I'm not quite sure how I feel about that.
#that was one of the few bls i didn't have any real complaints about#and i'm also worried that a japanese production might not give us the same... ah... intensity that we had from the thai show#we'll have to wait and see#love in the air

Everyone who does an analysis of Cats should be required to learn as much as they can about the Shiki production before they do anything else
#and if they think the shiki production doesn't count then they shouldn't do an analysis of cats#knowledge of other productions besides the 1998 film and old character blurbs from the london production would be good anyway#but if you can pick only one to require people to learn about it should be shiki#and the japanese fandom

In honour of its limited west end release, I'm gonna say it, the Death Note musical is not only far better than it has any right to be; it's the only logical adaptation choice. What is Death Note but a bunch of people staring into space while having really intense internal monologues? And what better way to dramatise that emotion than through a series of power ballads?
Other reasons the musical is great:
Tragic monster girlfriend getting the attention she deserves! In the manga, Rem was a glorified plot device. In the show, she has THE big emotional arc, THE tragic love song(s), THE ironic reprisals.
Successfully condenses the manga down into a 2 1/2 hour story that keeps the characters in tact and makes sense. If that sounds like damning with faint praise it absolutely isn't, look what happened to every other attempt.
the songs fuck!
#death note#the linked video is the 2015 Japanese production#with the songs from the original broadway concept album spliced in#forced my flatmates who had only the vaguest idea of what death note was to watch it yesterday#today? 'there's an anime right? maybe we could watch that?'
