Happy end of year! Thanks everyone for the warm reception to OTHERSWAP, here's hoping we'll have even more for you in 2024. In the meantime I'll share some miscellaneous pictures for you all to look at!
Tumblr media
Sketches for the snack bar in Clearwater that replaces Grillby's. I thought it would be funny if each town was required by law to have some kind of Christmas tree decoration. I'm really attached to the mascot idea... maybe there's a monster who just looks like that. Talk about a dream job!
The building ended up changing a bit in the sprite but it keeps the sliding doors and walk-up counter I wanted so it's fine. The sprite is a mishmash of roofing from Hometown buildings, the flowerpots from Grillby's, and original work.
Tumblr media
Noteblook and Shyra, Shyren's sister who replaces her in this AU. Obviously we never see her in the original game so I had to come up with a design that still says they're related but still distinct from each other. She's a little ditzy but still just as cute! Little fish monsters are fun to draw.
Tumblr media
Muffet eating a spear (spider pear), Shyra again, and the Holiday kids.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the Holiday kids, a little drawing of them in that one Christmas dress! You know the one.
Tumblr media
This was one of the very first things I drew back in 2021 when we were just starting work on OTHERSWAP. In the end we decided to not change Frisk at all, which thank god because the one singular stripe makes me uneasy.

Oh! What are your headcanons for frisk? I know we don't know much about them in canon so it's hard to extrapolate but I'm still curious
oh sure! mind, these are all personal headcanon, as there isn't all that much canon info i can go off of, HAHAHA
obviously I don't think frisk had a happy home life, just like chara. but while chara's abuse was more active, i think frisk's abuse came from neglect rather than outright hostility or violence from the people around them. maybe they were a single, unwanted child. maybe they were among the last of many, many siblings. too many to be notable... or missed. so they left.
by the time the game starts, they've already been living on the streets (of the city that became of the village of the humans that chara was born in) for a few years. they get by with their wits. i think they're VERY clever, unnaturally so for their age, and judging from their ability to talk/charm themself into and out of anything in the game, they probably refined that skill for survival (you make yourself liked enough, people are quicker to show you kindness. leftover food, a dry shop window to sleep in at night, some used clothes).
undertale itself raises the question of why frisk climbed Mt Ebott. i like the idea that it was a force outside of themself. like a sudden, SOUL deep tension that would only release if they followed the call. an intrinsic certainty that, somewhere, somehow, someone really needed them. maybe it was fate. maybe it wasn't. maybe they were tied to chara's spirit long before they ever fell (by blood, as a long descendant? by magic? both?) and they were reacting to flowey calling out for them. point is, they felt the instinct, and they followed it.
because here's the thing: in my take on this, frisk desperately wants to be needed. that's what ties them so closely to chara. going with the more literal interpretation of them as a ghost, chara still has unfinished business in the underground. they haunt their former home, much like flowey did, and they NEED to see more of it, they just can't let it go. and they can't do it without frisk. they need them. so frisk goes along, because FINALLY, they're needed. that's why they reset at the end and try again, that's why they keep returning to the underground. but of course, chara isn't the only undertale character who needs frisk. the entirety of monsterkind does, and the entirety of monsterkind gets better thanks to their intervention. flowey, too. asriel, too. that's what resolves chara's unfinished business and allows them to finally let go (i mean... as long as YOU do, too, of course :])
and this is precisely the reason I'm not a fan of making frisk traumatized by their experiences in the underground. having leftover baggage from before they came? love that. but the whole point of their journey, to me, is that they were the single most powerful being in the entire story. the amount of liberties they could take, with their actions, with their words, with their own person, due to the sheer scale of power they had on everything else.. sure there was violence, and fear, and adventures and misadventures and betrayals, but when you can literally control time, i think that was almost euphoric for them.
after the life they used to lead, i like to think frisk saw their experiences in the underground as positive. no more powerlessness. no more loneliness. finally in (shared) control of their life. was it maladaptive as hell? yeah! but it was better than nothing! and if you've been following me for more than a month, you'll know by now that i am obsessed with the idea of a post pacifist, reset-heavy frisk freaking out AFTER their happy ever after, when chara doesn't follow them out of mt ebott and takes the SAVE power along with them (which is... kinda what happens in the game). being back to square one would mess them Up. fortunately, they now have a whole support system of family and friends who love them to make them feel needed and safe. it's gonna take some work, but man. it's gonna be worth it.

Whenever S/O laughs, or finds something funny, their whole body glows and they have no control over it. How do the skellies react?
Undertale Sans - Obviously, he wants to make you glow all the time. He's in love with that glow. He's so proud of him every time one of his shenanigans makes you glow and he is even putting extra effort into them so it keeps on time.
Undertale Papyrus - You both are lost in the middle of the forest and it's too dark to see anything. Papyrus sighs. He didn't want to do it, but here you are. He says a joke out of nowhere, and you're so surprise you laughs to tears, brightning the whole forest. Papyrus feels a little guilty using you like this but it's very effective.
Underswap Sans - You're annoying him. Every time he tries to do things and you're waiting for him, looking at funny videos on your phone, he gets curious and always comes to see, and then he's doing nothing at all! How could you do this to him!
Underswap Papyrus - Every time you glow, he blushes bright orange, glowing back. You two are like two flashing lights, everyone is looking at you two. Honey wants to stop but every time he stops, you laughs and he's blushing again. This is so embarrassing.
Underfell Sans - Thanks destiny! He's bad at reading people's feelings, but thanks to your super-power, he can at least tell if you're laughing or if you're mad at him. It's super useful!
Underfell Papyrus - He's confused. He thought it was just a thing human do until he asked Frisk and Frisk looked at him like he's drunk. He's not crazy! You're glowing, he has proof! But then why are you glowing if it's not normal? Is it contagious? Maybe you have a disease all this time and now he's doomed??? What to do of this discovery? HELP.
Horrortale Sans - When he's lost in the dark, he screams jokes at you to make sure he finds his way home. It's very effective. He then proceeds to purr like hell as an answer so you can guess where he is around you.
Horrortale Papyrus - He's so embarrassed. He didn't mean to make a pun and now you're shining and everyone is looking your way. Willow is a bit uneasy about the attention. He loves your glow, sure, but not when it makes people look at him. He is still a bit scared of how humans see him.
Swapfell Sans - You're deep asleep, thinking about something funny, you body glowing in the night. Nox is on the opposite edge of the bed, looking at you like you're possessed and on the edge of crying. Please stop weird things during the night! This is scary! He swears to Toriel if you starts to fly like in these horror movies, he's jumping off the window.
Swapfell Papyrus - He loves to embarrass you in place you're supposed to be serious, goofing around to make you laugh and glow in front of your employer or in serious medical appointement. The people with you usually asked you to let your skeleton out of the room now...
Fellswap Gold Sans - He is not amused. During a meeting with Queen Toriel, you noticed he has a big hole in his pants, right at his pelvis. And because you're glowing so much, everyone noticed by now. Wine is entirely red, trying to stay focus. He secretly imagines how he would torture everyone to stay calm.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - He's jealous. He wants to glow too and he's mad because you can't teach him. There has to be a way! One day he paints himself using medusa. He's allergic to it and got stuck in bed 3 days BUT he's fluorescent now! He's so happy! But dying. But happy!

How did the crew meet C.B?
While I haven’t actually illustrated much of their origins, aside from the doodles giving hints of what happened, I suppose I can try to explain how I imagine it happened.
It is canon that Circus Baby was the last one to join the team. Before the events of Game 6, she was back in her own universe. But after GlitchTrap found a way to enter other worlds and assembled his team, the villians needed all the power they could get to take over the universe (of course!) GlitchTrap told of a power source that could be very useful but only certain people have it. That power was the remnant magic thing that Marionette, Ennard, and CB all have. So some of the bad guys lent him reinforcements to go nab one of them to use their power. Metal sonic was a part of that group. He was gonna grab Marionette, but CB saved him. Unfortunately, this resulted in her getting kidnapped instead. GlitchTrap wasn’t too happy with his own daughter being taken at first, but being the psychopath he relented and accepted the outcome. He even thought he could persuade he to join. (Obviously that didn’t happen lol). Circus Baby was the least experienced in the magic she had so her power was unpredictable. So until they figured out how to extract it, she was kept locked up in their base somewhere in the universe. After some time though, the other members found their way to this mysterious place. After meeting Bendy, he told the others about something strange he saw; a robot girl being taken by a metal robot that looked like a blue hedgehog. So while Mario Cuphead and Frisk scouted around to investigate all this chaos, Sonic and Bendy went to rescue CB. CB though had other plans are was able to escape her prison, hoping to find her own way out. She ran into Sonic and kinda smacked him with a pipe since he looked like Metal Sonic. Before she could do any more damage, Bendy stopped her and explained that they were here to rescue her. CB was obviously scared out of her mind, which did not go unnoticed. Sonic got her to calm down and convince her to come with them, promising he’ll keep her safe and help her get home. And thus, CB became the final member of the team.

I get it that Omocat wanted to focus on the feelz over everything else. But games like Yume Nikki(a game that Omori was clearly trying to ape) don't have a big overarching narrative, and is a very simple freeware game that leaves much room for interpretation. Also helps that it's ost was made to be atmospheric, even if you hear a song for only a couple seconds. I can listen to an extended version of this track while working on something, despite it being a 22 second loop.
https://youtu.be/hlayu0pXLYU?si=srwyAuKuP3cKBs3-
And in terms of games where you beat the final boss by unconventional means, the Earthbound/Mother series(another game/s Omocat was obviously trying to emulate) does so in a way that ties in perfectly with the story and characters in all three games, making the emotional pay-off from them earned.
Omori really wanted to be those games, but missed the mark on why they eventually became cult classics, while a game like Undertale was able to perfectly capture the spirit of them.
I could compare OMORI to Silent Hill 2, which I don't know much in detail (@woodchipp is the one who made this comparison - I keep tagging him because he's the expert here :P) but I know that its big twist is that the protagonist actually killed his wife because she fell sick. Apparently many fans picked for James the ending where he kills himself because they did not have any sympathy for him. I know that the game itself did not paint him as a poow bapyboy, just presented you with the events and his understandable guilt.
I could compare it to Hereditary, which also has a brother accidentally causing his sister's death and (before steering into the paranormal side of the plot) was about how that death wrecked the entire family and destroyed the relationship between son and mother who could only blame everyone around her.
I could compare it to Bojack Horseman, which explores the themes of forgiveness with cruel nuance - we viewers relate to Bojack and want him to finally find happiness because we get familiar with his circumstances, but when he fucks up, the people around him are allowed to cut contact with him, which makes eventual forgiveness (like from Todd) be even more precious. Incidentally, Xerox of a Xerox is all about Hollywoo discovering Bojack's role in Sarah Lynn's death (pushing her to go on a bender that led to her overdose and deliberately waiting to call an ambulance to create an alibi)... and he more than pays the consequences.
I could compare it to Steven Universe, and how it shows just how many people Rose hurt with her deception, even if well intentioned - Garnet falls apart, Amethyst tries to protect Steven from feeling responsible, Pearl moves on from her after their final bind has been cut.
I could compare it to Evangelion, which, as @spinningbuster98 said, also has a depressed teen as its protagonist, but he's pitiable because the story actually fleshes him out and doesn't shy away from the worst sympthoms of his depression, self-loathing and deep desire to be loved.
And if you mention unconventional final bosses, then there's also Undertale and its three final bosses: Asgore removing the choice of MERCY because he really wants to be killed, the fight against Asriel where Frisk is so full of Determination to SAVE him that they straight up cannot die, and Sans cheating all over the place because you player are also a cruel cheater. Also hugging Asriel and him crying that he doesn't want to let go >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> a shallow slideshow of Sunny and Mari being oh so happy together.
This story has been done multiple times, and infinitely better, giving all the respect necessary to every character involved, not just the cute protagonist. OMORI has nothing to offer if not a decent aesthetic.

sharing my oddly thought out saikimon info with you to convince myself that i didn't just do this in a sheer effort to pass the time
note: this isn't necessarily 100% complete yet so don't be suprised if something changes.... also the levels are mostly relative fhsfgh
Tumblr media
here are the bros.. i considered giving kusuo an extra move but ultimately was like. nah. too much work. he's got an impish nature but nobody can really tell at first cause of how guarded he is 💀 he's constantly clowning
not much to say abt kuusuke tbh. he and his brother probably have perfect or close-to-perfect stats, and they both excel in both strategy and power. kuusuke uses strategy from the very beginning of battles, while kusuo doesn't need to worry so much about that sort of thing given his sheer power
Tumblr media
i think touma's might stay exactly how it is... he's very happy-go-lucky and has the accuracy of a fucking eagle. his attacks are centered around his voice and he has two offensive moves and two non-offensive ones. he probably doesn't battle much and can't tell when he's being challenged unless he's told outright to fight. he relies mostly on strategy more than anything in battle.
miko on the other hand probably relies mostly on sheer power rather than strategy. and she has the super luck ability. obviously
Tumblr media
and then... him
reita ummm. he tries his best. he constantly practices new moves (sometimes kusuo even helps him) but constantly fails at it. it took him forever to learn air cutter and he's hellbent on learning air slash. he always uses roost at the worst possible moments and gets KO'ed right after.
he uses frisk and acts all cocky when he finds out someone's held item, but then he doesn't do anything abt it at all. like. haha, you have a poison healing berry! poisons you poisons you poisons yo
at least he's scary??? bro
anyways bye thank you

Romance on the surface (part 9)
Y/n x Sans
Arriving at the airport, your head teacher asks you to sit on tables for lunch. Your friends ask you and Sans if the trip went well, teasing you and showing you the photos they took. Sans, embarrassed and annoyed, drinks ketchup to pretend not to be concerned.
Haru: Ugh, how do you drink that?
R: Isn’t that disgusting?
Grilby replies that he himself never understood. Then you remember he was a bartender in the underground. You then ask him if it doesn't bother him too much to have to study for a year before being able to open his bar. He tells you yes, especially since he was only 1 year away from turning 25. But he is still happy, that it allows him to discover new things. Aoi also shares his opinion, indeed the underground has made her nostalgic because she was born there but the surface is so much more enriching and she has made wonderful friends here. Harper and Sans confirm their opinion. You are reassured to know that the monsters feel good on the surface. You tell yourself that your sister did a good job. But you can't help but wonder what the underground look like and how Sans was there.
You then go to the place where you are going to stay. It is a huge traditional Japanese house, featuring an indoor garden and hot springs. The head teacher asks the students to go and settle into their respective rooms, boys and girls separated obviously. With the girls you were lucky enough to be in the same room and the boys too. Your friends each tease you and Sans about what happened on the plane.
Y: So we have a little crush on Sans?
H: You seem really close on the plane.
A: Y/n are you in love with Sans?
You blush and they wait for your answer.
Y/n: That...that's not really it...I really appreciate Sans actually, he took care of my sister in the underground, I thank him very much for that. And he's really funny and kind. But... but I don't think it's love...
The girls look at you with a look that shows that they are not really convinced by your words. You blush even more. Sans, on his side, said that at first he was suspicious of you but that over time he realized that you were really empathetic and caring. Your friends look at him in a way that suggests there's more to them than that.
Then the students meet in the hall. Your head teacher explains that with the fatigue of the plane you have free space until 4 p.m. in the house, you will then meet again to discover the schedule for the week. Your group of friends first visits the indoor garden. With Yui, you take the opportunity to take out your sketchbooks under the watchful eye of Sans, Grilby and Aoi. But you quickly get called by Haru who find a ping-pong table with the others. The young people take turns until you are asked to play against Sans. You hesitate because you are not really strong but you are encouraged and end up giving in. Sans throws the ball too quickly which surprises you, the others tell him to go less hard and he apologizes. It's your turn to shoot but you do it so badly that everyone laughs.
S: He he! Sorry Y/n but this is so funny. You looked so determined and the ball just...He he I can't take it anymore...
You're happy to hear Sans laugh. Haru then decides to come play with you to teach you but it ends in a fight to the death against her and Sans. In the end it's Harper who will come to teach you how to play, which makes Sans a little jealous.

i love the tragedy of sans undertale so fucking much, like its so upsetting but it’s so wonderfully done oh my god. sans, more than likely, wasn’t even happy before the frisk incident but he was okay, you know? he has papyrus, who he obviously cares very much for, he has friends! but sans always knew to much, stuff he didn’t want to know. he found all the information he knew a burden, and it didn’t help with the fact he has this fucking…power. i don’t think sans even knew the extent of his own power before the genocide fight, quite honestly, because again he felt knowing would be a burden. he didn’t need to know! because sans thought he would be stuck in this underground forever, which wasn’t the greatest thought, but it was safe! there was no need for sans to know how far his power could go, so he didn’t find out up until that point. but then, this human comes along. and if we are going along the lines of how a first time player would play the game, this human isn’t exactly dangerous, but they aren’t safe. i think sans could tell from the beginning frisk was off, wasn’t just a human who fell into the underground. but he chooses to ignore it, and keep a closer eye on his brother, because they’ve only been attacking monsters who attack them. so they can’t be so bad? and they’re just a kid, so what’s the worse they can do? finally, though, frisk kills asgore and makes it out. and as sad as the king being gone is, they have a queen with an all to familiar voice. and everything basically goes back to normal. but this is where a real problem begins. it all resets. sans doesn’t know how, sans doesn’t know why, all sans knows is this exact same thing has happened before, and eventually he sees the same god damn kid he’d seen step on the same god damn stick. at this point i’d say sans doesn’t know what to think. he knows about time lines! he knows, vaguely, about resets and he knows about the anomaly and sans knows it all points to this kid. but what is he meant to do about that? again, sans knows to much he doesn’t want to know. but this time around this kid, this human, is going very particularly out of their way to not hurt anyone. i honestly don’t know if sans ever trusts frisk in any rout we see, but this is good! every one lives! and holy shit they make it out of the underground! i think sans is on edge though, even after making it out. because if frisk can reset once, who’s to stop them from doing it again? but frisk is nice..frisk is their friends, why would they ever do something like that?
the human resets again. sans has to be so fucking tried, so exhausted, and even angry. they had it all, they were out, and happy, and everything was great. but here they were again. and sans knows to much again. no one else remembers these resets, not outside dajuvu, so it all repeats in every single way. sans is burdened with information again, but this time it was someone’s fault. watching this kid walk down this path and step on the same branch for the third time, i’d imagine he feels defeated already. much less when they’re more than “a little off”. sans couldn’t even call it human anymore, watching it outwardly search for his own kind to murder. and then his brother. and he knows the women behind that door. and his friends. everything that was safe, everything that was making him okay. gone. by the hands of a child- no, a monster, he almost trusted, and that he definitely cared for. he knows he should have killed them from the start, done his job for once, but what would that have even done? they couldn’t die, not for long, he came to that conclusion a while ago. so was he supposed to just sit and watch and wait for his turn? that sounded like an easier option, but sans couldn’t be lazy this time. he’d judged them twice now, once they were protecting themself, and once they were the angel from the prophesy, but this time? they’d have to pay for sins they’ve committed.
i have a very strong feeling sans initiated this battle knowing he would lose. because why would he want to win? so he could live in the underground with everyone else dead besides the king and that damn flower? he fought to get revenge, just to make it a little harder on them, and hopefully guiltily. sans’s fight is so sad to me, because as full of anger as it is, it’s so hopeless. not meaningless, but hopeless. i think the worst part is this is the hardest sans has ever fought. like i said before he had no reason to know about this power, so as he’s fighting he’s just realizing himself. i get curious if he thinks this is why he has all this power. if the reason he has all this strength is to kill this thing, as if it was always meant to be like this.
he finally gets to the point where he is physically tried, more so than before, where he quite literally just has to stop. so he traps it, and watches, but his eyes can’t stay open because he has never trained for this, he wasn’t built for this type of stamina. sans falls asleep, and then sans is hit. he already excepted his death, excepted it the second it walked out those purple doors covered in dust. and he knows this isn’t over, soon enough he’ll watch it walk and step on that branch again. but at least for now, he can have a break.

Is The Narrator of Deltarune Chara?
First things first, I’m guessing you’ve read up or are at least familiar with Chara being the Narrator of Undertale, if not please read up on it here: The Short Read The Really Long and REALLY GOOD Read
And secondly, I am specifically talking about the Chara of Undertale, NOT Chara’s Deltarune Counterpart…Since that would require them to be dead and all that (while they are most likely either Kris, or currently meeting Asriel in College…I’m allowed to have headcanons) Which that out of the way let us begin from the very beginning…
The Narrator is their own Person, with their own Motives
To even prove that Chara is the Narrator we first need to prove that the Narrator of DR is a person as well
Tumblr media
And well the ending of Chapter 2 has made that incredibly clear, the narrator “forcibly” stops you from using the kitchen sink, for the sole purpose of using the Bathroom sink so that Kris may rip you out and do what…is it that they do
Tumblr media
Even when refusing to run the tap the Narrator…Makes it pretty clear that you have no longer a say in the matter and that it’s a matter of time before you give in and choose to run it Sooo there you have it! The Narrator is their own person…One that isn’t 100% following our every whim so with that all said, let us ask the question:
Why Chara of all people?
“Why is not the Narrator Kris or the Red SOUL itself or some other brand new weird little entity that narrates our journey?” Well on the case of the Red SOUL, it’s unlikely because….We are the Red SOUL, we play as them and they have no personality other than what we give them and only the actions WE take are the actions THEY take….Soo seeing as we are not the ones writing out said narrations I think its safe to say that we are not the narrator as for Kris or some brand new entity that just joined us…well
Tumblr media
The Narrator makes plenty of references to Undertale…And not ones that are just funny parallels to UT…but ones that are DIRECTLY talking about your journey during Undertale, it’s almost like…They are reminiscing about an adventure the two of you shared.. Nobody else could or even would have a reason to do this, these are inside jokes or details that originated from narrator specifically, the only ones that would know about these would be You, Frisk and CHARA Even if…let’s say…Gaster somehow had been observing the trio’s adventure and knew all of this….Why would he feel the need to reference those (and responding with “he’s trying to fool us” just makes it more clear that it IS Chara”) ….But that leaves a question, what about Frisk? well the quick and simple answer is:
Tumblr media
Frisk is living out the happy ending we gave them in the pacifist ending (more on that later) And now you may be obviously wondering…”What about Chara? Shouldn’t they be living out the ending we gave them?” Well let’s discuss that!
Where in the Post-T.Pacifist world is Chara Dreemurr~
well the first and obvious question is….Do we even know what became of Chara in the Pacifist Ending….The answer is and for that you may thank, Your Best Friend
Tumblr media
As we all know, after booting up the game after a Pacifist ending, Flowey will come to ask us not to RESET everything….Asking us to let everyone live out their happy ending, to let….Frisk live their life, meaning WE are no longer with Frisk, okay that doesn’t really change much since in Deltarune we are already separated from Frisk, so why am I showing this?
Tumblr media
Flowey was talking to Chara, not Us and Flowey has already made the mistake of mistaking Chara for someone else so I HIGHLY doubt he would do that again….Because that would be pretty weird not gonna lie in other words, Flowey found the being that was responsible for reseting (Us/The Red SOUL) but also sensed (or however they did it) Chara in us and simply thought that the entirety of our being was just Chara Meaning that Chara is longer with Frisk, but with the Red SOUL…Since We, the Red SOUL are no longer with Frisk…Meaning…That Chara goes wherever we go BUT before I go into more detail about that I should first elaborate on why I’m specifically following the idea of this being the Chara from a Post-Pacifist Ending:
What about a Post-Genocide Chara?
Now as to why I think this is a Chara originating from a Post-True Pacifist ending, the simple answer is:
Tumblr media
Clamgirl!
If you encounter her (which is only possible in the neutral and pacifist route) she will say that you should meet with her neighbor’s child, named “Suzy” if you then go on and kill Undyne and return to her… she mentions that she senses a disturbance in the nearby aura and that she changes her mind and decides you shouldn't meet Suzy. and in the T.Pacifist route AND ONLY IT, if you go and talk to her one last time…She delivers the message and with that…YOU’VE BEEN CHOSEN Basically seeing how Gaster’s goal is to:
Tumblr media
“Create a new future with you” and how when you give up in a game over screen, he says:
Tumblr media
“Then the world was covered in Darkness”….Implying that the future that is being changed by us…was't a happy one As such it would seem that the only logical thing for Gaster to do, would be to go look for the entity that has the power and DETERMINATION to alter fate and as such he summons the Red SOUL that was responsible for bringing a happy ending….
...And not the one in which it killed everyone without a second thought….Which also then proceeded to sell its SOUL to a mindless parody of the standard RPG protagonist that believes its purpose is to go to every world and grind until it becomes powerful…So I think Gaster made the right call…..
So yeah I think this adventure MUST be a continuation after a post-Pacifist Ending
Also, no this doesn’t mean that all other endings have been made "non-canon", Undertale is within the realm of “timelines” and all that stuff…Meaning that basically all endings are canon since…Multiverse or whatever, it’s just that in this case Gaster he decided to choose the Red SOUL from a Pacifist Timeline (or in other worlds, all endings are canon and Toby just chose to write a story that takes place after a certain ending, think of it as adding more content to one, like the Alarm Clock Dialogue...Which also somewhat foreshadows DR with the inclusion of Rudy and his Daughters)
…And that’s all there is to it!
Now let us get back to the juicy stuff
How and Why would Chara come to the world of Deltarune?
(Aka the relation between the Red SOUL and Chara)
well the whole foundation of this theory is dependent on the Chara’s own words:
Tumblr media
Chara has no SOUL and neither DETERMINATION They are as empty on the inside as Flowey….But without the over the top amounts of RAW DETERMINATION …So how does Chara keep on living? Well they just told us themselves, The human SOUL and the DETERMINATION that is keeping them alive…Was not theirs…But OURS, The Red SOUL’s In other words Chara is entirely dependent on the Red SOUL to keep on living, we are what is keeping them alive, for without them….They will return to the nothingness we awakened them from In other other words, Chara and the Red SOUL have seemingly entered a…Wanna say symbiotic relationship..? We are their Source of DETERMINATION while giving them SOUL privileges and Chara pays us back in Narration and flavor text…and lots and lots and lots of puns (Like mother, like child I see…) And there’s that! If we agree upon that then it means that Chara WOULD NEED to be by the Red SOUL’s side at all moments…Since by severing the link between them and "freeing" themselves from our bond with them….Well they would collapse Like a puppet whose strings had been cut, being thrown back into the endless darkness that awaits us all, to put it all fancy like
so if Chara wanted to keep on living…Then they would be stuck with us for the rest of their existence (basically they are forever cursed to be our Narrator until they get a SOUL of their own and all that….which happens in the end of Genocide after we sell it to them…So yeah) SO if for example a….Certain fancy Goo Man that got shattered across time and space were to Summon the Red SOUL in order for them to “Create a New Future” ….Then Chara would be forced to come along (It’s not like Gaster had any Narrator Cleansing procedures enacted upon the Red SOUL after all) Which Implies that during the Survey, the people that were present there, were US/The Red SOUL, W.D. Gaster…And Chara Make of that what you will
Conclusion and what this means for Chapter 3…
To Summarise this whole thing: Chara is bound/linked to the Red SOUL and thus cannot leave our side without…Dying…Again, meaning that if the Red SOUL of UT were to make its way into the world of DR, Chara would be forced to follow and such we are brought into an entirely new world were the 2 of us will journey through an entirely new world…Together! Cracking Jokes and reminiscing about the fun adventure that Undertale’s was But…There is one issue with this theory that it doesn’t really make sense….when viewing it from Toby’s perspective….Why would he bring back Chara of all people into the world of Deltarune, not having suffered the fate of being replaced by a brand new DR character, this would be a neat opportunity to start from scratch on his approach of the idea “The Narrator is a Person”, so why just stick with the old one? I….Don’t know the answer to that, maybe Toby saw that there was far more potential to be had with the idea of keeping the old narrator instead of starting from scratch once more, after all Chara is a character that has quite a lot of depth to them...and their Tale never really got the same conclusion like Flowey/Asriel's, but also it would be nice to be together with someone that has been along with you from the very beginning, that knows what you've experienced and shared the same adventure with you
….Making you feel less lonely on the idea that…We might never see the world of Undertale again….Which makes all the inside jokes that Chara makes all the more sweet to have! But at the end of the day…We can only speculate what is going on inside Toby’s head On a different note: In the ending of Chapter 1 we learned that we are not Kris, but rather the Red SOUL that is controlling them…Something that greatly re-contextualised the entirety of the chapter in not story and then in Chapter 2 we were given many opportunities to observe how our decisions wouldn’t be something that Kris agree with, and would take many opportunities to disrupt our choices….Or straight up “Monkey Paw”s us out of them, whether it is looking through a lock with their Eyes closed, or giving the answer a wildly different tone so that it gives off a very different message, like saying that you would join Berdly in a sarcastic manner As such I believe with the reveal of Chapter 2 that the Narrator can actually influence events…That just like Chapter 2 followed on the reveal of chapter 1, Chapter 3 will also greatly show the capabilities of the Narrator further expanding on our relationship with them, something which would have a TON of potential in creativity and uniqueness! And with that we’re done! Thank you so much to for reading through all of this, it means quite a lot to me!

Black is so interesting to me. He's in so many ways Red's opposite which makes sense, but the one thing that manages to unify them is *guilt*. Specifically guilt about actions that have harmed Frisk. And while Red tried to deny it where Black almost immediately let it consume him they both ultimately let that guilt drive them to the same conclusion- to follow them.
Also!!!!! Also the fact out of all of them Black is the most Frisk's *parent* (and the fact Red and Fell both have arguments for second place but that's another discussion) just makes me feel things. That's his baby!!!! That's his baby and they keep ending up horrifically out of reach oh my god. Honestly if Toriel ever gets over how they met the two of them would probably be really good at sympathizing with eachothers plights.
Anyway I want to lock Black and Red in a room and not let them out until one of them stops moving just to see who wins
oh absolutely, I think you're seeing something vital to each of them here. They both blame themselves, but Red decided he needed to seek retribution by torturing himself, and Black decided he needed to devote his life to making up for what he did in any way possible. And, interestingly, Black killed Frisk where Red refused to...but yet he's still the one who Frisk trusts not to betray them. And Red's still the one who can make some part of them feel like it's safe to relax.
Black and Toriel would make great friends tbh--Black has Issues with parenthood and the concept of being a parent, having killed his own parent to save his and Slim's lives; but I think that Toriel would be able to recognize him as a young, unsupported father to a traumatized kid who had to make terrifying sacrifices to keep them safe. And since so much of her relationship with Frisk is characterized by providing them the support they need to be functional but not understanding how to make them feel safe, Black's obvious familiarity with their trauma and the automatic adjustments he makes for their sake make him seem like an ideal parent. I think they'd also have a lot to bond over wrt each of them being afraid of losing a child, and having grieved over lost children. Toriel would be very happy for Black that he got his back.
Also unfortunately Red survives the battle royale because he's not about to let Black kill him. that's for frisk to do, obviously.

What do you think of demon Chara (how the geno end and most of the fan base see Chara, I personally just believe Chara would be a little brat but still nice)
I used to think Chara was evil (or some variation of that). But I dont anymore. It's all the player. [Neither Frisk or Chara]. however in a comic, obviously someone is to blame [and in most comics it cant be the player] and in that scenario, I think what works best is shared blame. Where both Chara and Frisk are responsible for what happened.
I think Chara being as dark as they are in AFAC [but notably not pure evil and actually very complex] is probably a result of early undertale fandom ideas of Chara (though I'm not TQ, so I can't say for sure) AFAC started very early [like 2015 early] so... yeah. And at least that Chara isn't a demon like people thought [but some askers definitely thought so]. And Frisk has partial blame.
Since then fans have had many in depth discussions on the nature of Sans, chara, Papyrus and Toriel (etc). And those of us who have been here a while have seen a change in how people view each of the characters. Mainly going back to the roots of characters and then adding from there.
Some things we know about Chara: they're a human. They came to the underground for an unhappy reason. They became best friends with Asriel. They knitted Asgore a mr dad guy sweater. They liked to mess with Asriel and make creepy faces. They baked a pie with buttercups instead of cups of butter. Asgore ate it and got sick. They laughed it off. They came up with a plan to break the barrier: they would eat a poison pie and die so that Asriel could take their soul and cross the barrier and get 6 more human souls. Asriel didn't want to, but Chara convinced him. They carried out their plan but when it came to the killing humans part, Asriel refused and so, humans killed them both instead. Chara wasn't the nicest person.
If Chara is the narrator [which is a theory with some solid backup such as "it's you" and "it's me" ] then they like puns! Just about as much as Sans Papyrus and Toriel. They have a lot more fun with the player during a pacifist run with what they say about the situation. You get the sense that the narrator [chara?] Prefers pacifist. The narrator [chara] cheers you on and makes the suggestion to SAVE your friends.
And then they show up at the end of geno. Claiming the stats as their own and taking control. (And then you get a scary face?) Or in a pacifist ending after a geno run you see they've taken over control of the body.
To me, all that is like "congradulations. You killed everyone. You purposely went around hunting everyone down for exp and gold. For the satisfaction of completion. Now is your curiosity satisfied? Cool cool. This body is mine now. You've lost your privileges to a "happy ending". You are not above consequences. "
All in all, I think Chara is a complex person. Also just a kid. I dont think they wanted to hurt anyone (at least monsters). They like pranks and puns and just plain messing with people. They like chocolate and Asriel is their best friend (sibling, friend or romantic partner depends on who you ask. As long as they are not siblings, I think romance is fine.) They're not always good, and they're not always bad (like us all). they like monsters more than humans and want the monsters to be free, and are willing to die (and kill) for that cause.
Goldy: To me, Chara is a brilliant deconstructive element that serves Undertale’s meta-narrative. Namely, they deconstruct the idea of a child protagonist saving the world. Firstly, on a realistic level, a kid doesn’t always think things through when they try to do something that’s out of their depth, which the main reason why their plan failed in Undertale. And secondly, when you saddle a kid with that much responsibility, calling them “the future of humans and monsters,” the weight of it- the pressure- is going to be felt in one way or another, and something’s going to give. It’s not a question of if, but when and how.
I personally don’t believe Chara wanted to destroy humanity or even free monsters for the sake of freeing them, but rather, they simply just wanted to measure up to the expectations that they feel were placed on them. Don’t get me wrong: freeing monsters is probably something that they agreed with, but to me, the real root of their motive was just to prove their worth to Monsterkind for taking them in. Which is tragic, because the Dreemurrs’ love was unconditional. It makes you wonder: what has to happen to a child to make them feel like they can’t count on being loved unconditionally? That love is not real?
Even the fact that they call themselves a demon supports this: what would rather be remembered as after your big epic plan failed miserably? A great and terrible demon, or a total loser who failed miserably- grasping for accomplishment that was never theirs to want? Not unlike Icarus who flew too close to the sun. I think the whole “Demon” thing is nothing but an overblown pretense that serves to be self-flagellating and self-hyping at the same time. The fanbase latched onto it because everyone loves a legend, and in typical online-cringe-brand fashion, they fixated on Chara’s faults and possible mental health issues as “evidence” to support what ultimately amounts to a confirmation bias.
We can make anyone appear evil, even a kid. Especially when we need a scapegoat for our choices in a game with a metafictional narrative.

Frisk Month '22 Day 20 - Asgore
“Should I say ‘Ho ho ho’? Or does only Santa say that?”
“You can say whatever feels right to you, Frisk."
It’s a cold December night. The street is dimly lit by the windows of houses, and by the headlights of Asgore’s truck. He pulls up next to the most conspicuous house on the block, which is decorated with so many holiday lights that it seems to be glowing red and green.
Frisk adjusts their elf hat, making a jingling sound. “Okay, I’ll think of something original.” They jump out of the truck’s passenger seat, carrying a small brown sack over their shoulder.
* You could have just used your backpack.
But that doesn’t fit with the look, thinks Frisk. Asgore takes a similar-looking, but much larger, brown sack out of the backseat and joins Frisk in walking up to the festive house’s porch. “They are going to love you,” he says to Frisk as he gets to the door, which is decorated with an ornate wreath that puts Papyrus and Sans’s outdoor decorations to shame. * Remember. * She won’t be the person we know. Frisk nods. They know. Asgore knocks on the door. Frisk stands next to him and puts on a big smile. A tall monster with short brown fur answers the door. She’s wearing a shiny dress the color of red ribbons. A shorter monster with antlers and an identical red dress is hiding behind her. “Ho ho ho! Happy Hollidays!” says Asgore. At the same time, Frisk says, “Hee hee hee!” * Very festive. “Fahaha! Hi, Asgore!” The taller girl stands aside to let Asgore and Frisk inside. “And you brought the famous human! Frisk, right?” She sticks a hand out towards Frisk. “The name’s Dess, and this here’s Noelle.” Frisk shakes Dess’s hand and meets eyes with Noelle, who’s peeking out at them from behind Dess. She’s smaller than the Noelle from the other world, Frisk thinks. And shyer. “Frisk here’s my Holliday elf,” says Asgore. “Gosh, it’s great to see you two! You’ve grown quite a bit, haven’t you, Dess?” Dess rolls her eyes and gives Asgore a hug. “I’ll be taller than you one day, old man,” she says. Frisk turns to Noelle. “Hi,” they say. “Sorry about the ‘hee hee hee’. I couldn’t think of anything else to say.” Noelle smiles at them. “I liked it,” she says quietly. “It was silly.” “Oh! Gorey!” Another deer monster emerges from the kitchen, holding oven mitts patterned with candy canes. “I see the girls let you in. Dinner will be ready in a few, I just have to roast the chestnuts a little longer.” Asgore follows Mrs. Holliday into the kitchen, chatting with her about boring adult things like the surface’s confusing street layouts. Dess takes Noelle’s hand and grins at Frisk. “You guys wanna play Plumber Racing?” “Oh, wait,” says Frisk. They take their sack off their shoulder and open it. “I’ve got presents first.” They fish out two candy canes and hand one to each of the girls. “Asgore said you’d like these.” “Well, he was right!” Dess takes her candy cane and eats all of it in two bites. “Thanks, Frisk!” “Fahaha, Dess!” Noelle puts her candy cane on the side table. “You’re gonna spoil your dinner!” “Oops,” says Dess. ——— As it turns out, Noelle is just as good at racing games as she is in the other world. She handily defeats Frisk and Dess in all four races. She plays as the girl from space instead of the big turtle, though. Frisk plays as the green lizard, obviously. * Obviously. When the adults call them for dinner, Dess races them to the table. Frisk and Noelle silently agree to let her win. It’s one of the nicest dinners they’ve ever had. Everything is a mix of sweet and spicy that makes them feel warm inside. Even the pecan pie that Asgore made is delicious. They especially like crunching on the roasted chestnuts. “So, Frisk is like our cousin, right?” asks Noelle after taking a sip of her eggnog. “Because Uncle Asgore is their dad, that makes them our cousin.” Asgore looks startled, but Dess chimes in, “Totally! Frisk, that means you gotta play video games with us at least twice a year, okay?” “The cousin pact is sealed,” says Frisk solemnly. They hand a chestnut to Noelle. “Here’s my offering.” Noelle pops it in her mouth and giggles. ——— In a couple of hours, after exchanging presents and singing songs, Asgore and Frisk say their goodbyes to the Holliday family. Frisk gives the three Hollidays one hug each, and definitely doesn’t hug Noelle a little too tightly. As Frisk is dozing off on the drive home, Asgore asks them, “Frisk… do you consider me to be your father?” His voice is quiet. “Um…” They think about it for a minute. “Well, you’re Chara’s dad, and Chara and me are siblings, so that makes you my dad, too. Even if we don’t live together. Plus you do dad stuff with me all the time, so.”
They rest their head on the car door. “I’m happy to hear that, Frisk,” says Asgore, patting them on the shoulder. “I’m very lucky to have you as a child.”

So I had a dream that Carlos the Scientist fell into Undertale. And obviously Cecil was there. Cecil worked as a shopkeeper (I guess even in dreams I couldn't replace Mettaton) . He looked human so Carlos went to him, and Cecil obviously fell in love instantly and decided to hide Carlos.
I remember the impression that Carlos would be very happy in the under world, and no one was questioning where he came from.
There could probably be a plot here about the two of them helping Frisk or working with Alphys. I mostly just woke up feeling like "of course! Nightvale is where all the monsters were trapped, but it's actually a nice place to live!"

Can you explain what you mean with misinterpreting Chara? I've always been confused about that character and you seem to have a pretty solid read you alluded to in that post about Snowgrave.
of course!!! as your local chara defender since the ripe age of 13 i hope you don't mind me doing a small essay on this. please bear with me tho because i sometimes can't articulate my thoughts well on stories that deal with philosophical themes ;;
UHHH SPOILERS FOR UNDERTALE AND DELTARUNE CHAPTER 2 BELOW
first let me make a few things clear so i don't have to repeat myself a bunch:
only tobias radiation fox himself has The Word of God privilege when it comes to things that haven't been explicitly confirmed in the games yet, EVEN if they're strongly hinted at. don't take anything i say about the plot as more than firm personal interpretation based on the info we have right now!
i cannot stress this one enough: undertale is a game that was never meant to be experienced from a singular perspective/mindset. the genocide route doesn't JUST exist for the sake of "enjoy your personalized edgy fuck-you run for being a serial killer in a video game", every one of the total 93 endings (look it up) in this game exists to reflect the player who achieved it in one way or another. the genocide route is really no different from any of the others, because in the end, no matter what, the player who decided to go through with the things they did will ALWAYS be rewarded for it. the question the player will have to ask THEMSELF afterwards is "is this what i wanted?"
OK MOVING ON-
let's think back to the little but vital amount of info we have on who chara actually was, like, as a person. we know pretty much all of this due to 1) the tapes in the royal lab 2) asriel's additional dialogue at the end of true pacifist.
while we'll never really know why frisk fell into the underground, asriel tells us explicitly about chara's hatred for humanity, and how they jumped from mt. ebott for "not a very happy reason"; supposedly a suicide attempt. chara "never talked about why", it's left intentionally vague because their reasoning isn't really what matters. what DOES matter is how this is relevant to the genocide run, ESPECIALLY with the new obvious parallels in deltarune's snowgrave route. i'll get to that.
when you finish the genocide route, chara will talk directly to the player in person. they talk about your (you AND chara's) success, despite "their plan (having) failed". this "plan" is one they secretly made with asriel when they were both still alive, as revealed from the tapes. chara got terminally poisoned from eating buttercups (whether this was fully intentional or not is still kiiinda up for debate), and while on their deathbed, asriel says that he doesn't like the plan anymore. yet despite his fear, he still fused his soul to chara's when they died.
the actual plan here was to become a monster powerful enough to slaughter humanity, specifically chara's home village by their own dying request - this all ties into their mysterious spite and hatred mentioned before. but due to asriel's resistance against chara, their fused body was killed by the humans - which eventually led to the creation of flowey, and asriel's inner demons after death.
but back to the genocide route. during chara's monologue to the player, they give us a LOT of important exposition. basically:
at the very start of the game, frisk's own determination is literally what brought chara's soul 'back to life'. we know how human and monster souls are different and how "determination" in this universe is something only humans possess, so it makes sense why it awakened them. i won't get into the whole narrator theory because i feel like it's not that relevant to my point (it's fun tho), but chara is always present from the moment frisk falls down, and stays regardless of the player's actions.
if you managed to finish undertale at all you'll already kinda know this (thanks sans), but the EXP and LV you (can) gain throughout your journey aren't just numbers on your screen - they're genuine in-universe manifestations of power that increase when you kill someone. and in genocide, chara explains how they were directly affected every time your stats rose. they could FEEL their spirit growing stronger for every life you decided to take (REMINDER THAT THE GENOCIDE ROUTE CAN BE PERMANENTLY STOPPED AT ANY POINT BEFORE SANS. YOU DID THIS.), so is it really that strange that they felt the desire to grow even stronger?
and once you do reach this point, there's no return. all that excessive time and effort you put into killing off a civilization OBVIOUSLY has some consequences. the consequences HERE being - if you paid attention to chara's life story - you took advantage of a traumatized child who was already at the breaking point and making irrational choices on their own, and you led them to believe that this was what they needed!
this is VERY MUCH SUPPORTED by the snowgrave/weird/pipis/whatever route of deltarune chapter 2 that was discovered about 2 days ago as i'm writing this. i'm gonna go ahead and assume you know what happens in it and i don't care to go into details if you don't, since this post is about chara, but surprise: THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO NOELLE, TOO! even in a completely normal run, noelle makes it clear multiple times that she wouldn't mind staying in the dark world; that in spite of how scary and dangerous it seems at times (something something horror movies), she started to feel at home. POSSIBLY even more so than her ACTUAL HOME, with her dying dad and negligent mom. like chara, noelle is a young person with low self esteem and her fair share of trauma, even if it's not as apparent. and like in the genocide run, the player's desire to ruthlessly kill in order to grow stronger affected her already-poor mental state.
someone else already pointed this out specifically, so don't credit me for it, but the main difference between chara and noelle is that noelle managed to break free in the end.
if you're like Most People Who Played The Genocide Route Back In Like 2016 and you played the genocide route with no further knowledge about it than "i have to follow these specific steps to get a harder fucked up version of the game", i don't blame you. you didn't actually know what you were doing in the end, did you? but did the outcome disappoint you, make sense to you, or did it just leave you with an empty/confused feeling? i love undertale because it WILL force you to think about things like that. i mean, if the result wasn't gonna affect you in SOME way, why would you go through all of that trouble in the first place? you had your reasons, as the player of any video game where you know your choices matter. would you have carried out the entire thing if you knew what was coming? the answer to that is only relevant to yourself.

GUESS WHAT???
I got a early birthday present from my grandma and it was a drawing tablet!
So I immediately drew a drawing obviously. It's of Frisk and Chara from Undertale. I'm proud of it, and I am now happy.
Tumblr media
I also tested out the app that they had pre-installed so here's that(I downloaded the same app that I normally use) It's very sketchy and the person's just a random person.
