Nursing Student Life
Tumblr media
Here we have Korom in his younger years (20 years old), a couple weeks into his nursing classes, realizing that as much as he loves a strong coffee on its own, he's now going to need to stay up at all hours of the day for the next few years if he really wants to become a neurosurgeon.
Just another "filler" image for the main storyline of Korom and Charun, mostly Korom because I like to give people a little dive into the earlier years of older characters.

I'm thinking about a Bug World concept where any non-insect might just see the residents as regular animals, but the way that the residents see themselves contrasts to that. Seeing themselves as more anthropomorphized and regal
Which would also play in to how the rest of the world sees Bug World, as small, insignificant, and something to not waste your time on. But the residents of Bug World see their societies differently, even if the giants don't want to see it. Still debating on this though

What a sweet comic! Lots of existential questions about life. It reminds me a lot of one of my favorite books from childhood, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this one’s a few days late due to having a lot of doctors appointments sorry it’s  just 9 pages, and about some rats… it’s more symbolic than anything really

Mrs. Brisby cosplay
I'm planning on going to MomoCon this year, and Don Bluth will be there! He's one of my favorite people ever, so I really want to meet him. I'm thinking it would be cool to cosplay a character from one of his films. Of course I love Anastasia and Thumbelina and they'd be lovely, but the Secret of NIMH has been my favorite for a long time so I want to make a Mrs. Brisby outfit. Probably brown clothes, red cape, mouse tail and ears, magic necklace, and some face paint.
Any suggestions?

Here's a rapid fire list of non-Warriors xenofiction novels WC fans can read. Will say I haven't read all of these, and in that case, I will not leave a comment. Obligatory Wings of Fire, Guardians of Ga'hoole, Redwall, and Watership Down recommendation. Honorable mentions go to other Erin Hunter series - Seekers, Survivors, Bravelands, and Bamboo Kingdom. Varjak Paw series by S.F. Said. Two books. Geared toward a younger audience like Warriors. I can vouch this as one of my favorites. I can see it being an acquired taste, especially for someone older, though. Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams. One book. Personally, I'd only recommend this book if you're super interested in learning about the inspiration for Warriors. Otherwise, its themes have aged like milk and the story isn't all too special. I will say the plot gets pretty decent and horrifying at the halfway point. The Deadlands series by Skye Melki-Wegner. Three books. I have completed the first and a read a little of the second. Geared towards a younger audience like Warriors. You can tell that the audience is younger due to the dialogue and characters. Descriptions are good and I'd imagine thrilling for the target demographic. In fact, I'd describe the books, that I've read so far, as thrilling in general. However, the "Jurassic Park meets Wings of Fire" comparison is a lie. Wings of Fire is accurate but this series has nothing to do with the Jurassic Park movies or books besides dinosaurs. It'd be closer to say "The Land Before Time meets Wings of Fire." I would definitely recommend it if you're looking for Warriors with dinosaurs. Silverwing series by Kenneth Oppel. I've only read a little of the first book, so I don't have much to talk about. I will tell you that a graphic novel has recently released! Fire Bringer by David Clement-Davies. One book. About deer. No comment. Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. One book. Horses. No comment. Raptor Red by Robert T. Bakker. One book. Utahraptors. No comment. A Black Fox Running by Brian Carter. One book. Foxes. No comment. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien. One book. Mice. No comment. Foxcraft series by Inbali Iserles. Three books. Foxes. No comment. The Tygrine Cat series by Inbali Iserles. Two books. Cats. No comment. The Books of the Named series by Clare Bell, more commonly known as Ratha's Creature or the Ratha series. Five books. Prehistoric Dinaelurus nimravids. No comment. I think I've listed enough in this ask, but I'll drop this xenofiction list https://www.tumblr.com/the-owl-tree/745956715298799616/xenofiction-reading-recommendation-list?source=share in case anyone wants more.

“Issue #21: Lovebug”
[CW: mention of transphobia on page 4]
Yes, this is the second Cormorantpaw POV issue! It really is a great deal of fun to write him, the dense little beast that he is. I adore him.
The argument that Cormorantpaw references on page 2 is from Issue 5. You can go back and read it to see that scene in full.
Seven Silvers is a character I’ve mentioned before on this blog, based on one of my favorite childhood books, “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH”. Yes, she can read and understand advanced biochemistry. Yes, she invented fantasy cat HRT. You gonna do something about it?
Anyways, big day for Cormorantpaw! Tell him congratulations for realizing he’s bisexual and that he has a crush on Pinepaw in one fell swoop. And just for clarification’s sake, I’ll confirm that Egrettail is transgender and aromantic-asexual. And living her best life.

Tim Frisbee's name being spelled the way it is is so funny to me since the titular character of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH had the spelling changed from "Frisbee" to avoid potential copyright issues with the discus toy with the same name. (Does this mean that the toy is called a "Frisby" in this world? lol)
Fluff/meme question aside – how do you feel about fan translations of the comic? I wanna practice my Hokkien Chinese on something I'd have motivation to work on
i actually had no idea about the copyright thing - thats fascinating!! im not sure about the toy, ill have to think about that for a bit.
also - i am totally fine with translations of the comic! i love to see them!

I had a very vivid dream last night about Nezu finding out that someone who was involved in the "project" Nezu came from started another in secret, & basically tried cloning/"recreating" Nezu. It was called Project Frisby (fairly certain that's a NIMH reference). The middle bit was confusing, but it ended with Nezu adopting the resultant kids - a girl & 2 boys - as his children. 1 of them grew up & eventually married Koda's kid. Another became a secret agent. Last 1 took over running UA.
We really love the 'character excapes fucked up situation only to find their captors have created their replacement' trope huh

I responded to the booklist question! I'm sure I forgot some but whew it still took forever to write.
What about you? What are some of the books youve read the most?
Good question! I finally started keeping a list, so I have something to work from. That way I won't draw a blank.
My top five or six favorite authors and series are: J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis's Narnia books, Rosemary Sutcliff's Dolphin Ring series (beginning with Eagle of the Ninth), Enemy Brothers and The Reb and the Redcoats by Constance Savery the Queen's Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner, and The Mysterious Benedict Society (original trilogy and prequel) by Trenton Lee Stewart.
There are many other books and authors I love. I listed several of my childhood influences in this post featuring my 50 favorite children's books (focusing on ones I grew up with as a young person).
Here's my list of favorite books I've read the most or ones I think are worth rereading: The Ordinary Princess by M. M. Kaye (a delightful original fairytale about a princess who refuses to stay in her tower)
The Reluctant Godfather by Allison Tebo (romantic comedy fairytale retelling, with an emphasis on the comedy) Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH by Robert C. O'Brien (adventure about a mother mouse seeking to save her family) The Gammage Cup by Carol Kendall (middle grade fantasy adventure)
Dragon Slippers and Tuesdays at the Castle by Jessica Day George (original fantasy in the style of fairytales) Princess Academy by Shannon Hale (fantasy adventure and coming-of-age story about a group of girls who attend school for the first time)
The Secret Keepers by Trenton Lee Stewart (urban light fantasy with dystopian elements) The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau (middle-grade, post-apocalyptic dystopian) The Arrival by Shaun Tan (a wordless graphic novel that conveys human experiences through surrealism)
The Saturdays by Elizabeth Enright (vintage contemporary about a lively family) Derwood, Inc. by Jeri Massi (modern contemporary mystery about another boisterous family) The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (quirky vintage mystery with an interesting cast of characters) Historical Fiction: Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Latham Caddie Woodlawn, Family Grandstand, and other books by Carol Ryrie Brink Rebecca's War by Ann Finlayson Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher Knight's Fee by Rosemary Sutcliff
The Lost Baron by Allen French The Wheel on the School by Meindert DeJong By the Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleischman A Single Shard and Seesaw Girl by Linda Sue Park The Bronze Bow and The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare The Secret Garden and A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell A few books I discovered more recently that are now all-time favorites: Seventh City by Emily Hayse, The Letter for the King by Tonke Dragt, Valiant by Sarah McGuire, Out of the Tomb by Ashley Stangl, the Mistmantle Chronicles by M. Okay okay okay, first I want to say that I absolutely adore this comic with my whole heart it's so PRETTY in so many ways from the art to the story and characters. It's so amazing!!! I also want to say that I love that you're leaning towards realism (or well, as real as it gets since you know, talking lions and all that.) As much as I adore fantasy animal stories it's pretty refreshing to see a comic that leans towards realism!
(You guys are awesome, can't wait to see more!!)
Thank you so much! We try to keep this a good-looking comic. We make a good team. While we weren't going for full on realism, we do still include some realistic behaviors. Otherwise they'd just be people in lion costumes lol We obviously don't include things like (government sanctioned) infanticide or stuff like that. We do, however, keep the lions social, mostly nocturnal and crepuscular, indifferent to disabilities, sexualities, and gender identities, having investment in keeping their children alive, and having one or several designated protectors of the pride, among other things. But it's the personal drama and politics we love as well. - Cat
- This is super nice to hear! Thanks, anon.
We never wanted to use realism as a selling point unlike certain folks so it helps that we can pick and choose the extent of said realism, if that makes sense?
It's also nice to hear this kind of appreciation when we've got a bit of flak from folks whose only exposure to xenofiction appears to be Watership Down so therefore every bit of animal fiction/xenofiction should be "Watership Down but with [insert entity other than rabbits here]" and as much as I also enjoy Watership Down: y'all should broaden your horizons? Xenofiction can still deviate from realism and still be compelling and enjoyable. Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a particularly favourite example of mine.
I went off on a tangent a bit there but once again: thanks for the sweet message, anon. <33 - RJ

Porco Rosso
Tumblr media
You know, I usually forget about Porco Rosso when thinking about my favorite Ghibli movies but it’s a banger.
After this rewatch, it’s hard for me to think of it as anything other than Miyazaki’s self-insert fanfic. Seriously, this is like his ideal world - everyone’s flying their personal planes around and parking them like they’re cars at the local diner, Porco’s this big cool guy who everyone respects and all the hot babes are into, and he gets to live alone with no one bothering him in a cool island cove. It’s even set in 40s Europe, so he has all his favorite fascist planes available*!
*oh yeah, you thought The Wind Rises was problematic? Let me introduce you to Studio Ghibli’s namesake and start unveiling the pattern here
Tumblr media
behold - the intractable chaotic force that is two dozen kidnapped schoolgirls
Tumblr media
Anyway, I think the strongest point in Porco Rosso’s favor is that it’s just funny as fuck. I don’t know how the Japanese audio track is, but the dub is some king shit. I get that this is a ‘when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail’ situation, but honestly it has Big Redline Energy imo.
We’ve got your classic early 2000s gravelly-voiced Steve Blum-alike too-cool protagonist, contrasted with a world surrounding him that absolutely refuses to take itself seriously with constant dumb gags and throwaway jokes. The American guy provides a lot of this (I died at the raw fuckboy energy exuded from him saying “That’s my favorite line from a screenplay I wrote”), but it’s everywhere - the fuckin Carnival Cruise liner deploying their own personal fighter jets to fight off pirates, with color commentator already on deck and raring to go, was probably my favorite. Even the dogfights, which for the most part remain somewhat grounded and above board due to Miyazaki’s plane fetish, get real goofy at points, with Porco and Curtis throwing wrenches at each other like a cartoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, come on! ehh? right? just me?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sidenote: while grabbing these caps it was interesting to see the contrasting approaches to showing the engine's power in each of these scenes. In Porco Rosso, they focus on the characters themselves and their elastic properties, showing Porco's ears and jowls flapping wildly in the wind, which leads to some great freezeframes. Frisby doesn’t have much in the way of loose body parts, so instead they focus on his loose shirt billowing with the force - it doesn't really translate as well in a still but looks great in motion.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day it has its issues - I’m still not convinced it’s just Porco that doesn’t take women seriously and not the movie itself - but it’s a damn good time.

NIMH AU: Isabella
Tumblr media
(Based on a character from original novel "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH", Isabella the young rat^^)
Full Name: Isabella Montgomery
Species: Im-Human (through experiment)
Age: 18~19
Gender: Female
Other names: Isa, Izzy, Bella
Occupations: Student (formerly), Librarian (currently)
Residence: 1st Bund of NIMH (formerly), New Bund of NIMH (currently)
Family: Mrs. Montgomery (mother), Isaac (twin brother)
Relationships: Justin (first crush), Elizabeth Brisby (her “love rival”; formerly->friend), Jonathan Brisby (her family’s lifesaver; deceased), Hermione (teacher; formerly)
Likes: Reading books, watching Justin from afar, children, Justin’s happiness Dislikes: Jenner’s obsession for revenge and power, Justin’s unrequited(?) affection for Elizabeth Brisby (formerly)
Isabella Montgomery was a young IM-Human lady living among the IM-humans in the Bund. Widely known as a blooming belle of her society, she has blond hair and violet eyes. As a little girl, she was imprisoned with her mother an her twin brother Isaac after her father was sent away to war prison camp and they were experimented in NIMH facility. However, they were rescued by Jonathan Brisby and his allies, agreed to live in the Bund ever since they heard of her father killed by enemy soldiers and lost their homes by bomb. At one point, Isabella was nearly caught by enemy soldiers but was saved by Justin who slain them before they could harm her further. Hence, little Isabella developed a huge crush on him, even told her fellow IM-Human peers she dreams to marry him when she’s older. Although, her peers laughed it off.  She also viewed Jonathan as a perfect hero and never thought of the idea of him settle down and marry normal woman. Eventually, she was shocked to hear Jonathan’s death and that he has wife and children.
A natural bookworm with kind heart, when she heard Brisby family are to move their house as Timothy got ill, she volunteered with other IM-Human females to help the widow as Isabella was eager to suggest interesting books to Brisby children as they have shown interests on written texts other than what their late father gave to them. Although Isabella was jealous of Elizabeth and proclaimed she dreams to marry Justin, she was puzzled when Elizabeth respond with maternal smile as Isabella’s innocent crush on Justin reminded her of her behavior around Jonathan when she was her age. Witnessing Elizabeth’s fragile feature as human yet her fear overcame by her practical view of reality and determination to protect her children, Isabella sees why Justin developed romantic interest towards the Brisby widow. Thus, becoming much nicer to Elizabeth, even assisting her to visit Jonathan’s grave. It was revealed that at one point Isabella confessed her feelings to Justin, but he politely and firmly rejected her.
When Elizabeth voiced her decision to volunteer to distract Drago, Isabella was immensely concerned as she knows Drago’s amorous misdeeds and the possibility of him hurting her. For Elizabeth’s safety, Isabella snuck out to watch over her during the mission to drug Drago with sleeping powder and was seen relieved when Elizabeth completed the task. However, when returning to Brisby Manor, Isabella was shocked to find Nicodemus dead and the manor was immobilized. Sensing Jenner’s sudden grasp on the power to be suspicious, she speculated he was involved with Nicodemus’ death and the immobilization of Brisby manor. Along with Sullivan, she rushed to warn Justin when Jenner abducted Elizabeth. Later, she was seen shocked to see Brisby manor destroyed, but in relief to see Elizabeth and her children unharmed. Along with IM-Humans, Isabella was seen in tears of joy to see Nicodemus revived and Timothy alive as IM-Human. Through days IM-Humans help Elizabeth with restoring her family house, Isabella noticed the growing crestfallen look on Justin’s face, then realized that when the manor reconstruction is complete Elizabeth and Justin have to be in separate ways. Catching a hint of Elizabeth’s feelings for Justin, Isabella gave the two some privacy while helping Auntie Shrew with children out of house. Isabella was seen next day, bidding goodbye to Brisby children as she has grown attached to them. Days went by, in new Bund at Thorn Valley, Isabella became a librarian helping Nicodemus with recording his prophecies and recording the reformations on the book as Justin became a new leader of IM-Humans.

10 Characters, 10 Fandoms
RULES: List your ten favourite characters from ten separate fandoms then tag ten people!
Tagged by @boatswainscall
Thanks, I love being a part of these! Also, I'm not nessicarily involved in these fandoms, but I'm in a character appreciating mood, so...
Roz the Robot (The Wild Robot) (I am not going to shut up about it once this movie comes out, I swear on my library) She's friend shaped. She works to make her home. I can't stop trying to draw her and realizing how much more practice I should have with drawing circles before I try.
2. Brea (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) choosing one from this show is hard! But she's the one who gets put in the most mental animatics, so she's here.
3. Yfling (A Choir of Lies) (No last name given) (I probably shouldn't have even stated his first name, but he uses it.) Sad wet cat of a man. The most white man to ever realize how badly he broke a failing system in the wrong direction. He's the narrator. He's unreliable. He still works as a storyteller while writing, a cultural taboo. The book is certainly worthy of praise and criticism. This guy also needs a hug. Badly. That doesn't make any part of his actions OK.
4. Alinua (Aurora) One of my favorite uses of "Life Magic" as a character element without it being her entire character. Also, hair floofy. (all of the aurora characters with hair have floofy hair. Go read Aurora the webcomic, if you so choose. It's fun)
5. Mrs. Frisby (Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIHM) Only ever read the first book, but I've read it at least 8 times. One of my favorite examples of an almost flat character arc in a protagonist. Different in the film. Still good, but a different that I've learned to live with.
6. Martin Blackwood (The Magnus Archives) the themeeeees.
7. Amelia (Infinity Train) Hooooooo boy. Talk about backstory not justifying current actions but. She's trying. She's working towards a different ending to the self destruction she promised herself. She accidentally adopted someone who's technically her daughter. She needs to work on her personal issues SO much more than she already has. It was between her and The Cat, for I T, by the way.
8. Sophie Hatter (Howl's Moving Castle) Yes, you are in a story ma'am, but I am so glad by book 2 you've also learned that there are Consequences to your Actions and that causes you to change absolutely none of them. Yeah they got you turned into an old lady, but only the once!
9. The Pooka (Hilda) "I would like to borrow an egg cup" has become a familial in-joke. Shape changer that can only look like himself?
10. Jack Frost (RotG) This man took up Residence in my brain in 2012 and Has Not Left Since, and I have given up on trying to make him, and that whole world in general, for that matter, go away! Fanfiction of my own it is! (of the "Put this man in more situations" variety. I want to see how I think fantasy rules for TMA and ROTG interact. Also, separately, Danny Phantom)
I'm sorry, I don't know 10 people to tag, but I do have 5.
@kiwipigment , @hardcore-solangelo-19, @smolbonbon, @geektrashfan , @i-want-cheese , Care to take a swing at it?
