In memory of the ancient pole in Islamic mysticism: Sidi Abd as-Salam ibn Mashish

Abd as-Salam ibn Mashish, the man of his time, a renowned muslim gnostic, lived in the 12th century in present-day Morocco. Being a significant figure in Islamic mysticism (known as sufism). He was particularily the murshid "spiritual guide" of al-Shadhili, his only disciple, who later went on to establish the Shadhiliya Order.

Renowned for his piety and deep spiritual insight, his teachings and writings consisted of a collection of reflections about religious and political life in his time, of a eulogy of Mohammed (taṣliyah), The Salutation Upon The Best Of Creation, and the widely known metaphysical paraphrase within sufi circles called al-Salat al-Mashishiyah. His influence extended to the renowned Islamic philosopher and Sufi, Ibn Arabi, who acknowledged Abd as-Salam ibn Mashish's impact on his own spiritual journey.

sometimes I randomly think about the time a girl posted in this girls only Facebook group I’m in telling everyone how she broke up with her boyfriend and he lied saying that he lost the spare key she gave him, only to then break into her apartment when she wasn’t home and steal the cat they’d adopted while they were together, but then he denied having done this and she didn’t really have proof that he took the cat since he wouldn’t let her come into his place and look for it. And then another girl saw this post and knew her ex-boyfriend, and she was like “girl. I used to hook up with your mans back in xxxx and I still have his number. If you want, I’ll hit him up and get him to invite me back to his place and see if your cat’s there.” And the OP was like “bet.”

So this woman hit up homie dog, asked him out for drinks, went home with him, slept with him, and then woke up in the middle of the night and TOOK THE CAT. Like she had only said that she would confirm if the cat was there but then she took it upon herself to steal this woman’s cat back. Like she full on Trojan horsed this man and then hit up homegirl like “I got the goods. Where you wanna meet.” And then the two of them posted a photo of them together with the cat to the group.

And I just think women supporting women is so beautiful.

I was at a Palestinian solidarity gig last night & the one Palestinian artist who was going to perform had COVID so the organisers asked around to see if there were any Palestinians who'd like to say a few words instead.

A local guy who was born & raised in Gaza offered to speak. He started with "I'm an engineer. i'm not a poet or a politician. I don't... do public speaking… I had no idea what to say when I came up here. So i'm just going to tell you about the street I grew up on."

And then he did! He went down the street building by building. He told us about the ice cream shop on the corner, the grocery shop, the charity that supports people with intellectual disabilities. He told us about the people who he knew growing up, the families who still live in the different houses. He told us about the university buildings and about his friends who quit being accountants to start a band together. All on that street.

All of which is gone now, by the way. Bombed to dust.
