80 lat temu w niemieckim KL Auschwitz pobrali się więzień Austriak Rudolf Friemel oraz robotnica przymusowa z Hiszpanii Margarita Ferrer Rey. Jak podało Muzeum Auschwitz, był to jedyny ślub w obozowym urzędzie stanu cywilnego. Friemel został powieszony przez Niemców 30 grudnia 1944 r. po próbie ucieczki z obozu. Zginął w koszuli ślubnej, na której z okazji tej uroczystości więźniarki wyhaftowały…

I’m pretty confident it’s not something like “oh I wanna be this gender today,” or “I just feel like not being this gender for a while.” For some trans people, gender is as firm and sure as my cisgender-ness is. But from what I know, for some people it is a process of realization, development, and growing. It’s not something you choose over time, it’s something you understand more over time.

Tuinverdriet

Vanavond hadden we vergadering van de tuinvereniging. Ik had spreektijd aangevraagd omdat ik het niet eens ben met de wijze van besturen, niet transparant. Ook omdat ik al een hele tijd op de tuin kom en irritaties hoor van andere leden. Niet dat ik me nergens aan kan ergeren maar ik kon me daar vrij snel overheen zetten. Gewoon, lekker tuinen.

Ik had gehoopt op de meerderheid van stemmen voor een nieuw bestuur, het wordt tijd voor een frisse wind op de tuin. Geen meerderheid en daarom zit ik er hard over na te denken om te stoppen met de tuin. Daar althans. Voor mijn gevoel heb ik twee keuzes, of stoppen of doorgaan met tuinen maar dan enkel voor het tuinen. Stoppen is op zich niet zo moeilijk. Je zegt de tuin op, neemt je spullen mee en zwaait nog een keer. Opruimen hoeft niet want dat heeft de laatste jaren niemand gedaan bij vertrek. Opgeruimd staat netjes. We hebben inmiddels wel heel wat opgebouwd op de tuin en wat dan met de kippen. Doorgaan met tuinen enkel voor het tuinen is me best een tijd goed af gegaan. Ik ging ‘s avonds, dan zijn er niet zoveel mensen op de tuin, en in het weekend of heel vroeg of heel laat, ook dan was de rust daar te vinden. Dat is de laatste tijd ook anders en niet dat dat erg is, iedereen mag tuinen wanneer het hen uitkomt natuurlijk, graag zelfs, maar de gesprekken gaan voornamelijk over de ergernissen. Daar heb ik last van. Als ik zuiver moet kiezen kies ik voor tuinen maar op welke manier weet ik even niet. Misschien naar een andere vereniging. Misschien de vereniging links laten liggen, gewoon betalen voor de tuinen en de groene vingers modderig maken.

De afgelopen jaren is de tuin mijn kerk geworden. Dat mijn kerk, net als de gewone kerken, wordt afgebroken doet me verdriet. De afgelopen jaren waren best pittig en ik heb me wat afgejankt op de tuin, al botjes brekend bij de komkommers (dat is het weghalen van zijscheuten). Ik heb dagen gehad dat het me allemaal teveel werd, dan was de tuin mijn rustpunt. De helende werking van aarde om weer te aarden.

Ik heb heel wat tuinen gezien die geen liefde kregen en dat soort tuinen zijn er nog steeds. Te druk en andere blabla. Voor mij is ziekte de enige reden om niet te kunnen tuinen en dat is meestal van tijdelijke aard. Druk, druk, druk is iets van deze tijd. Als je het driewerf druk hebt moet je zeker niet gaan moestuinen. Ik zie de laatste jaren ook de nieuwe tuinen, de tuinders die het anders aanpakken en dat vind ik mooi, andere invalshoeken. De modeltuinen zijn nieuw. Niet net als bij mijn tuin alles gratis afgehaald maar nieuwe tuinhuisjes en sjiek de friemel. Ook mooi. 

Ik kan mijn kerk niet laten stikken. Vaak helpt een blog typen om mijn gedachten op een rij te krijgen. Ook nu weer. Met weglopen bereik je weinig tot niets. Ik ben niet de enige die het anders wil zien, samen sterk. Zorgen dat mijn kerk weer de veilige haven wordt voor als het stormt. Een veilige haven voor iedereen die met hart en ziel tuint.

Universal healthcare would actually cost the average citizen far less in the US, even accounting for taxes, because the price tag of life saving treatment and medication in the US is actually significantly higher than the cost of producing it. I'm sure you've seen the ridiculous disparity between the price and cost of insulin in the US. The current system has citizens paying far more to insurance companies per month than they would ever have to pay in taxes if healthcare were universal. Universal healthcare is more cost efficient by definition.

And the waiting times between the US and other countries where healthcare is universal... are about the same. But the hypothetical waiting time difference is not really important, ultimately. Denying poor people healthcare just so the rich get treated faster is a heartless way to look at healthcare.

Other people also have brain tumors or other life-threatening conditions, and if they can't afford healthcare, most of them will simply stay home. Six months is pretty rough, but the waiting time for most Americans is Never. They just die. Or they wait until the symptoms are so bad that they are on the verge of dying, and by that point, when they go to a hospital, their illness has becomes exponentially more expensive and difficult to treat, which in turn creates even longer waiting times for other people. If they had been able to get treatment sooner, it would never have gotten that bad, and could have been resolved much more quickly. I'm disabled because of it. I'd have gladly waited 6 months for treatment, as opposed to 20 fucking years.

What do you think the doctors are doing during that wait time? They're saving more lives. If you have to choose between fast waiting times with more deaths, or slow waiting times with fewer deaths...the only ethical choice is the one with fewer deaths.

Now let's take a big picture view. Universal healthcare actually reduces waiting time in the long term because people won't be waiting till the last minute to receive treatment, so life-threatening illnesses will be caught in early stages & treated before they actually become life-threatening, which is both faster and cheaper for everyone. So fewer people will have those illnesses over time, and that means fewer urgent patients, plus shorter treatment times, plus lower treatment costs, which all results in shorter waiting times in the future.

But again, if healthcare becomes universal in the US, the bottom line is that more people will get treated and thus more lives will be saved. Which is always better than a handful of people being treated very quickly. Ask yourself, is the goal of healthcare to save more lives, or to save a certain small group of lives faster?

The waiting time argument is a deflection. The poor deserve to live too. Right now the US is watching the poor die and then charging them for it. It's a good thing your husband got treatment. Many Americans don't.

Sorry, I could never be a capitalist, I suffer from “wanting humans to have their basic needs met” disorder, where I care about people who aren’t me.
