Angling in Teyvat
Part One: The Fruit Anglers
Common throughout the region of Sumeru, of which they are endemic, the Fruit Anglers (Voracarpus sp.) are one of the species one can expect to catch when fishing in pretty much every freshwater body of the region, from its main navigable rivers to oases and other small isolated water bodies much further inland.
Natural bottom dwellers, they use their cartilaginous protrusions to dig burrows, nests and trenches to look for prey hidden in the mud. But they are just as useful for protection against predators that, combined with the cutaneous chemical defenses of some species, so precaution is adviced when handling members of this species.
One of the rarest most priced species is the so called "Peach of the Deep Waves", Voracarpus persicoides. This unique species is endemic to the pools of water that accumulate up in the canopy of the Lokapala Jungle. Because of its predator free environment, it has lost the chemical defenses a lot of its relatives have evolved, and so its taste is said to be surprisingly sweet, since the sweetness of its crustacean diet is not overshadowed by bitter chemicals in the flesh. Because of its inaccessible habitat and the difficulty of making a dish out of them, not many fishermen have seen a wild specimen in their lives, only captive bred ones ornamental ponds and aquariums.

Mbu Puffer (Tetraodon mbu)
Family: Pufferfish Family (Tetraodontidae)
IUCN Conservation: Least Concern
While most of the over 190 species of pufferfish are found only in marine environments, the Mbu Puffer is a rare example of a freshwater pufferfish, inhabiting much of the lower Congo River system as well as several of the estuaries, large lakes and smaller rivers that it connects to. It is also unusual among its relatives in terms of its size; while members of the pufferfish family rarely reach large sizes, Mbu Puffers can grow to be up to 67cm (2.2ft) in length, dwarfing most of their relatives. Members of this species are demersal (meaning they typically remain close to the riverbed) and, like most pufferfishes, are durophagous (meaning they are carnivores that specialize in feeding on hard-shelled invertebrates such as snails, mussels and crabs, with their four enlarged front teeth forming a beak-like structure that aids them in breaking through shells), although they may also take softer prey such as worms and small fishes. The Mbu Puffer’s size means that adults face very little predation, but like other pufferfishes they still possesses the ability to inflate themselves into a large, spherical shape by filling their stomachs with water when threatened, making them difficult to bite.

A brazen puffer
The bronze puffer, Auriglobus modestus, is recorded from the middle and lower stretches, of a few medium to large sized rivers in Southeast Asia. Thus it is considered as one of the true freshwater, rather than brackish pufferfishes. Lately, Europe has seen this species shipped, from the Indragiri. For reference, the Indragiri has an annual temperature average of 31 degrees centigrade, and a measured pH of 6.3. Other localities have different parameters, for example in the Baleh River Basin, which also yields A. modestus, the water pH is 7.2 and the temperture recorded at 25 degrees. Growing to a maximum length of just over 10 cm, or 4 inches, it is one of the smaller freshwater puffer fishes. This, and its appealing golden or bronze coloration, mean imports of this fish can cause a minor stir.
According to the literature, A. modestus is a hypercarnivore that reportedly devours small arthropods, some seeds, and some whole small fishes. Unfortunately for aquarists, the recorded diet of A. modestus, also includes nipped fins and scales. This is not the dietary spectrum of a peaceful community fish, and not surprisingly, this puffer has earned itself a reputation, as an aggressive fin biter. On the plus side, although plant seeds are recorded as items in their natural diet, A. modestus are disinterested in live, growing foliage, such as Cryptocoryne and Ceratopteris.

Sea Cryptic!Danny Phantom- pt. 8
[Pt.1] [Pt.2] [Pt.3] [Pt.4] [Pt.5] [Pt.6] [Pt.7] [Pt.9] [Pt.10]
If I had a nickel for every time I’ve been to the hospital in the past three years, I’d have enough money to buy a bag of skittles from Target. Most of it wasn’t for me though lol I’ll add this onto the list in a bit, but I tend to do that from my desktop but I’m still currently attached to an IV drip. I’ve also never been this hydrated in my life lmao
——
Danny poked a puffed up pufferfish. The poison floated through his ghost form and did nothing but give him a little zap. Danny chuckled, wiping away a bit of oil that had gotten onto the fish from a nearby oil spill. Jesus fuck. Danny knew that bald headed, easily drawn Vlad wannabe from across the river would do something terrible to Gotham’s waters (not that it needed help being atrocious to Danny’s clean water appreciation).
The puffer fish- Danny gave up on understanding Gotham’s water ecosystem, having realized that it was a cursed mix of saltwater and freshwater and swamp- gave a fearful little wiggle and Danny let it go, turning to the oil particles floating around.
Danny took out his phone.
“Danny? Why the hell are you calling at three in the morning?”
Danny raised a hand and blasted out some ice, gathering the oil up. “Hey Sam. If I got you into contact with Poison Ivy, do you think you could team up to get rid of Lex Luthor’s new holding company in Gotham?”
“Danny, are you asking me to commit an act of ecoterrorism?”
“That’s not even the weirdest thing I’ve ever asked you to do.” Danny placed a hand on the ice mass and flew it, the oil, and himself across the river to Metropolis.
“Deal.” Sam’s voice gets further away as she pulled her phone from her ear. “I’ll text Tucker, see if he could futz with Luthor’s taxes. I heard her doesn’t even give his workers a livable wage, and that’s so not gonna fly.”
“Perfect! Thanks! We could totally meet up and hang out with my new friends!”
“Hah! That Tim guy? The one that wanted you to introduce Phantom to him?”
“Yeah, yeah, laugh it up, goth girl.”
“Sure, dork. I’ll swing by Friday?”
“Sure! Want me to pick you up?” Danny phased through Lex Luthor’s frankly ridiculous amounts of security measures, still completely invisible and towing a giant mass of oil covered ice.
“Cool. Now hang up. I actually need sleep.”
“Ah, you must be dead tired. I get it.”
Sam hung up, and a second later, Danny got a pic of her holding up a middle finger with her signature purple nail polish.
Danny stared down at the sleeping billionaire. Gross. He let his face re enter the visible spectrum and lowered the temperature of the room drastically. Luthor groaned, waking up as he shivered like a hyped up chihuahua.
Danny bared his teeth, glowing green skin reflecting the black holes of the universe and imploding stars and burning planets as he leaned towards the frozen two bit villain.
“RESPECT THE PLANET,” Danny snarled. He unmelted the invisible ice as he simultaneously made the oil visible, the entirety of the oil spill coating every single inch of Luthor’s penthouse bedroom. Danny winked out, but not before snapping a quick picture of Lex Luthor’s absolutely covered in his company’s oil spill.
If Danny had made sure that there were fish droppings mixed in with the oil… that was his own damn business.
——
Danny floated over to a brooding Batman.
“Do you have two hundred dollars on you?” Danny asked in lieu of a greeting.
Batman grunted a yes.
“Two hundred dollars for a photo of Lex Luthor being hit with karma.”
Batman instantly handed over the cash and received a printed out photo of Lex Luthor (in his Lexcorp pjs) covered by fossil fuel.
"Is this..."
"The oil from his oil spill? Yes."
Batman stared at the picture.
"Why was this more expensive than ID'ing corpses?"
"Cause it's funnier. And dead people deserve more consideration than a egg looking ass polluting everything he touches."
Superman zoomed into the space in front of them, face eager.
"I heard you had something about Luthor?"
Danny figured that Batman probably contacted the hero, and confidently said, "$200 for personal use, $300 for commercial use."
Superman quickly got together three hundred dollars in cash and quickly forked it over. Danny gave him another physical copy of the photo and a usb drive with the photo in a digital format.
"I am so pinning this up." Superman muttered.
"Get out of my city." Batman said flatly. Superman waved a hand, beamed at Danny, and left.
"Did you know Gotham's waters is a mixture of freshwater, swamp, and saltwater habitats?"
Batman grunted.
"Also, please stop stalking Danny Fenton. It's odd."
Batman swiveled his head over. "What."
Danny stared him down. "Stop. Stalking. Innocent. Bystanders. Or else I will recreate the phrase "drowned rat" with you as the subject."
Batman stilled.
"I don't kill, by the way. I can, however, dunk you in the sea and lift you up like a goth version of Simba."
Batman relaxed minutely. "I can't."
"And why not?"
Batman gave him a despairing look. "Have you met my children?"
"... Point."

Stole this from an anon; what fish would be improved with teeth, do you think? And which one would be better without any?
i think there should be a freshwater shark species with no teeth, preferably a parasite or a detritivore of some variety. something that most people would unilaterally agree is gross and preferably be more familiar with it than with all the oceanic species so that everyone will be surprised that the cool marine predators are actually just a version of this one. maybe something like the shark answer to the candiru, though maybe there are multiple species of these freshwater toothless sharks, and just one really small one ended up convergent with the candiru.
likewise because i go by all tetrapods being counted as fish (because ancestry is actually rather important to understanding anatomy and how species have evolved can tell you clues about how they will respond to other things in the future etc etc), i think more frogs should have the african bullfrogs' bone spikes. this will not make the world better but it will make it more interesting.
there should also be a species of betta that looks exactly like normal betta but with sharp little teeth in there. just to add some spice to the world. there should also be a type of pleco with teeth like a cookiecutter shark, everything else the same, that can also just creep up on other fish and take chunks out of them. maybe even a very small species of sturgeon too, especially if this lets them slurp up lamprey into a mouth like a lamprey.
i'd like to give seahorses teeth just because i'm curious where they'd put them. i'm imagining something like a cartoon grate, where if something gets forcibly pulled through it just comes out in meat chunks on the other side. even better if the teeth are fused top-to-bottom for this.
also i think there should be a species of parrotfish that retroactively lost their teeth. perhaps pufferfish too. mostly i'm curious what kinda niches they would end up in but also as a nice contrast to how weird those types of fish are to begin with. i like the compounding weirdness. i think there should be more freaks^2. i also think there should be a species of rodent that also has an entirely toothless sucking mouth, and they can be convergent with the fish too, or otherwise just nicely parallel their existence.
#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#asks#fishyfishyfishtimes#please do not take this seriously-#i think all of these would make the world measurably worse. which is why i love them.#you know those pictures of birds with the beak edited out#thats what im imagining for the toothless parrotfish#they should look like something very important is missing

met this giant freshwater pufferfish at the sheds aquarium the other day. he kept pressing his face up against the glass as my friends and i watched him, like full on smoosh. i cannot stop thinking about him
(also, i don’t think he’s sick or there’s anything wrong with him, since my friends and i came back later and he was just chilling in a corner minding his own business. he is just very special)
Dude freshwater puffers are just like that, they just bump into you and stare into your soul like <0—0>

Okay I finally got everything decided for the merfolk Straw Hats! I’ll be tagging everything related to this as ‘merfolk au’.
Luffy is a bull shark. Hear me out on this one. This shark is a voracious eater and an extremely strong predator. They’re also capable of surviving in freshwater for surprisingly long periods of time, which I think compliments Luffy’s adventurous nature. They also sometimes fight crocodiles, which I just happened to find funny.
For Zoro, I think the green moray eel would be fitting. I know swordfish is the obvious choice, but I wanted to do something different. These fish are aggressive and vicious fighters. Also, they don’t clean themselves and instead rely on other fish to clean them, which is very Zoro like in my humble opinion.
Nami is a flame angelfish. A gorgeous fish that is known for having a temper. They’re also expensive in the fishkeeping hobby, which is very on brand for Nami.
Usopp is an indo-pacific sailfish. Between them being one of the fastest fish in the ocean and their long nose, it’s a perfect fit.
Sanji is a pelagic thresher shark, a fierce fighter that uses its tail as its main weapon. They’re also very athletic, capable of swimming at high speeds and breeching out of the water.
Chopper is a reindeer that ate the mer-mer fruit and became a blue spotted pufferfish merman. I chose this one because the defense mechanism fits his scaredy cat personality, and also because this fish doesn’t get along with members of its own species very well.
Robin is a mimic octopus. They can change colors, as well as alter the length and texture of their legs, which I think works well with her devil fruit ability. They’re also masters at hiding which suits her well.
Franky is a peacock mantis shrimp. These guys are very intelligent, and their strong armor and unique attacks suit Franky’s cyborg status nicely. Their colorful appearance and blue head is also fitting to such a colorful and boisterous character.
#one piece#monkey d luffy#luffy#zoro roronoa#nami#cat burglar nami#usopp#sanji#black leg sanji#tony tony chopper#nico robin#merfolk au#i made my favorite character my favorite fish lol#but i think it fits!#cyborg franky#franky the cyborg

Fish List
I love fish so much. I have only been thinking about fish. Here is a list of my favorite fish in no particular order, with facts and random commentary sprinkled in between.
Copper Rockfish
If someone asks me what my favorite fish is, I'll say Copper Rockfish. It was the first fish I ever caught (and had to put back, since Rockfish are endangered), but genuinely I just think they look really neat. They're my favorite out of all of the Rockfish species.
2. Quillback Rockfish
Though Copper Rockfish are my favorite Rockfish, I'll also shoutout Quillback. I really like how their spines are blue, and standout really well against the yellow and black. All Rockfish are venomous (to my understanding), but I've always found these ones to be the most intimidating if only because the spines are so much bigger than the other subspecies.
3. Sockeye Salmon (spawning)
For those who don't know, salmon spawning is when salmon return to their birthplace (freshwater) to lay eggs and die, and they also change appearance. Pre-spawning, while they are in saltwater, all the different subspecies pretty much look the same: silver and lumpy, with only minor differences between them. When spawning, they all turn more green and red and become more distinct from one another. I've always liked Sockeye the most, with their green heads and bright red bodies, and the shape of their heads/mouths. I think it's really an iconic look.
4. Flounder
I love flounder just because they look stupid. Fun fact: they don't actually start flat. They're born looking like "normal" fish, with one eye on each side of the head, but as they grow the face shifts onto the top and they flatten to better blend in with the sea floor. Imagine hitting puberty and you turn into Flat Stanley lmao.
5. Cabezon
Cabezon, like Rockfish, have venomous spines. Also their meat is blue until you cook it, where it turns white, which I think is neat. Usually, they reside really deep in the ocean, but in fall and winter they come more into the shallows to make nests and lay eggs. The males are left behind to guard them, so this is the best time to catch one if you don't want to go out on a boat, and also don't want to worry about catching a female. I've never eaten one, but my dad says that they have a texture more similar to chicken.
6. Betta
Pretty basic species of domestic fish, but I still really like them. I had a red and blue male as a kid named Spike. Bettas are usually surface/top fish, but Spike liked to go to the bottom to feed with the Emerald Corydoras I had, and sleep on the moss ball (like it was a little bed). He had a surprising amount of personality for a fish.
7. Emerald Corydora
Corydoras are basically just little freshwater catfish. They like to be in groups, so you have to have at least five if you want to have them at all. I had Emerald Corydoras growing up, and I loved watching them spend all day picking at the sand with their little whiskers for food. They remind me of cows.
8. Panda Corydora
Panda Corydoras are also really neat. I like how shiny they can be, I think it makes them look like little Pokémon.
9. Albino Corydora
Albino Corydoras are cool, especially in comparison to the other species. I think they all look like little old men.
10. Koi
Another kind of basic fish, but they're still cool and I want to point them out. They can get really big if they're not kept in a small enclosure (Domestic Koi can get between 12 and 15 inches, Japanese Koi between 22 and 26, and Jumbo Koi between 34 and 36).
11. Pufferfish
Like flounders, they also look stupid and it amuses me endlessly. They have these two front teeth for breaking into snail shells and slurping them out. I remember there was this really big one at the fish store I used to go to (nearly identical to the one pictured on the left) that would follow your finger if you dragged it across the glass, all the while with that big-ass stupid smile on it's face. They're just so full of whimsy.
12. Telescope Goldfish
Never owned them but I think they're really neat. "Awooga!!" ahh fish. What are they goggling at smh.
