another bit from the just hold my hand fic that probably won't ever be written

I wrote the little thingy about Bradley and Jake's middle kid, Ronnie, being a bit of Ice's favorite, and Mav might have a bit of a soft spot for PJ, their youngest (so far...) boy because of the shared name and the overall cuteness and clinginess PJ has.

But it's the twins, the oldest girls, Tommy and Nicky, that have everyone wrapped around their fingers.

This is mostly due to that one) they can speak, being almost six and all, two) they speak a lot and it's hard to keep up, and three) Mav and Ice missed the most out of their childhood, the over five years they didn't know Tommy and Nicky existed, so they might be overdoing it on spoiling them a little bit to catch up... (Or a lot, if you ask Bradley or Jake)

The thing is, the girls are starting school and with that, they meet new friends and this means new obsessions and things they want - it's mostly just trendy clothes, toys that they've never been interested in and dance and gymnastics classes, but nonetheless, it's something else.

Bradley and Jake are mostly good at fending off unnecessary or expensive requests and agreeing to the more reasonable ones (same as Jake's mom, who is used to having to budget for a lot of kids wants, being a mom of six herself), with Jake being the firmer hand on this occasion - Bradley was the one who stayed on parental leave with the kids when they were small and has a bit more of soft hand when it comes to spoiling them...

One of the things Nicky and Tommy get obsessed with is getting a puppy.

Obviously, Jake and Bradley say no. Not because they think a puppy would be bad for their family - Jake grew up with farm dogs and would love his kids to grow up with a dog - but because the logistics are a bit tough. There's already so much to do with four kids and more on the way, and dogs need a lot of attention as well. They're stationed in San Diego, for now, but it can also change, and it's hard enough trying to move a family of seven, not to mention a family of seven and a dog.

Now, Tommy and Nicky aren't blind to how much their grandpas are spoiling them. So they might or might not be especially vocal about wanting a dog around them. Maybe even suggest that they'd like a puppy for Christmas or something and just tell them about all the stuff they'd do with a puppy if they got one.

Of course Mav and Ice fall for it.

They're not as crazy as to buy/adopt a puppy for the kids without at least telling Bradley, and Bradley, you know, teases them a little for being so soft and letting themselves get 'manipulated' by six-year-olds but in the end, he tells them there's no way they can have a puppy now, no matter how much the girls want one.

The same night, Ice finds Mav browsing animal rescue sites on the couch, laptop on his knees as he makes notes in a little notebook.

Bradley said no, he signs, but Mav only shrugs.

"I know," Mav says and then pointedly, adds, "I'm not looking for a dog for them."

It takes Ice a minute to understand what Mav means but once he does, he sits down with him on the couch.

And it's not like Mav is looking for a dog just for the twins - he and Ice will be taking care of the puppy most of the time, and Mav admits that a dog is something he hasn't let himself have because of the life they were living (in the Navy, mainly) but he's retired now, and he had a dog when he was a kid and like it, and maybe it'll get Ice out of the house more often as well...

So, yeah, they get a french bulldog. And the kids love her - she was a rescue from a puppy farm and named Katharine Hepburn (called Hep by the breeders) and the kids swiftly rename her Kat, which everyone finds a bit silly but indulges.

Maybe Jake and Bradley give them a bit of a stinky eye over dinner (mostly Jake, not that Mav cares that much...), but Bradley only shakes his head and tells them they can't keep getting the kids everything they want. Well, personally Mav thinks they can at least try.

Kat is an amazing addition to the house. She likes to sleep in Ice's lap whenever he does paperwork in his office and prompts him for breaks when she begs for a walkie every few hours. She also makes them go out on walks on the beach or to the park more often and whenever the kids are there, she glows at the attention - they always keep an eye just in case the kids get a bit rough with her, but she's very patient and never gets bored enough to stop playing with them and lets the twins carry her around in her little bag. She gets plenty of exercise and affection and quality food and Mav also has someone to keep him company when he makes breakfast in the morning or someone to keep Ice's cold feet away from his calves at night. The twins like to buy her little cute accessories and feed her healthy snacks and take her out to the dog park. It's a win-win in Mav's head.

Kat is great and if her presence makes the twins want to visit more often - that's just another bonus.

Purebreed vs Rescue

A common debate among the dog loving community is purebred dogs vs rescues. Several things contribute to this and of course I'm going to talk about my own opinion on them.

First, I'm going to say that while there is such a thing as a bad breeder, there are also ethical breeders who genuinely care about the health and welfare of their dogs, as well as the temperament and purpose of the dogs they are breeding. To buy from these breeders is not a bad thing if you know what you need in a dog, have a specific purpose in mind, or simply want to know the most likely temperament and health from puppy to adulthood because it is much more controlled. I also contend with certain breeds of dogs being bred to more and more extremes (french bulldogs, bulldogs in general, any dog with high health issues due to their need to conform to "standard") because these are NOT ethical. They may be well cared for and have a certain temperament, but I can't support dogs that can barely breathe and often have expensive surgeries and/or die due to aesthetics.

Buying from an unethical breeder is something I will never agree with. I'd say your average dog owner knows what a puppy mill is, but many don't understand why a backyard breeder is not much better. Supporting those who breed simply because they have two dogs that are technically purebred (getting an akc registration is actually easier than you'd think) is supporting over breeding, even if the dogs are well cared for. These dogs are at best minimally medically tested with random temperament, and at worst, simply purebred with no testing in any way. Please do your research before buying.

Pet shops carry unethical dogs. Whether fad breeds or "rare" colors (i.e. nonconforming or not even possible colors like a silver lab which is a mix of a Weimaraner and a Labrador), an ethical breeder will not supply these shops.

Fad "breeds" are also something I struggle with. Many of these doodle mixes have become a bane on the dog world. They are cute and adorable, but often mixed with breeds that cause incompatible drives leading to heavy behavior problems being bred into them right from the start. Doodles are worse off due to their cuteness and being marketed as "great beginner dogs" which often translates to new owners as "needs minimal to no training/socialization". While doodles do bring in clients, I would rather they not. Same goes for many of these "purebred" crossbreeds, such as shepskies, pitskies, etc. These dogs are selling for high prices with breeds that should not mix and can cause at best challenging but high drive dogs and at worst a bit of a nightmare for most dog owners.

All that said, I support ethical breeders. I support buying a dog for a specific job (service, sport, search and rescue etc). And I support new owners looking for a more predictable dog with the lifelong support a breeder will bring to that dog. Buying responsibly is not a bad thing, and is what keeps some of these breeds alive.

Now, let's talk rescues. Rescue culture is interesting. Back when I was younger, we just called dogs from shelters/streets/oopsie litters mutts. Sometimes we got lucky and got a purebred from a shelter, and we'd say that was a lucky find (by the way, there are purebreed rescues and many dogs in shelters are purebred, often due to guardians not knowing the demands of a breed or overbreeding). The culture around mutts has shifted to become a more positive one. Now we say "rescue", seemingly referring to any dog that is not directly from a breeder or pet shop is a rescue. I have personally rescued dogs off the street. This is not a humble brag, just a statement of facts. Of those I picked up, several were in poor health and needed medical treatment, and many were just a little dirty and skinny in need of a bath and food. Of these, I kept none, but rehomed all of them.

I'm not here to gatekeep the term rescue, but to put some context into it. While I support adopting from shelters, there is a new culture of calling all dogs in a shelter a "rescue" even if the dog was born there, an owner surrender, or never in any medical/physical/mental trauma to begin with. This culture shift was to aid the shelters in moving dogs and encouraging guardians to "adopt not shop" wasn't enough. They needed to have people feel good about their dog in a way that was more than just "I didn't buy a puppy" so they shifted to calling all dogs rescues. I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing, but it leads to a ton of misconceptions.

Shelters are a traumatizing environment for dogs. Many dogs who are in a shelter long enough suffer mental trauma and can appear as though they were abused. It's very easy for a shelter or future guardian to talk about their dog in a way that personifies them (again, sometimes helpful, sometimes not) and paints a tragedy around a dog who probably was never abused but actually just needs help working through the trauma of just being in a shelter.

Why is this a problem? Well, it's because I meet guardians who assume nothing can be done, that this is "just the way she/he is" because "they were abused". They "hate men" so therefore "a man must have hurt them". So while they love their dog, they never seek the proper help for their dogs' mental state and the dog carries that trauma with them. But they do get to carry that badge of honor saying they "rescued" a dog, whether or not any abuse took place.

I have met puppies from a breeder (I actually have a client right now with this issue) that started from a breeder but was (in this specific case a covid puppy) undersocialized. These puppies turn into adult dogs that are fearful, skittish, and scared of things they weren't ever exposed to in a positive way. Things such as men in hats, tall people, people who are not in the household. These dogs duck and cower and bark. These dogs would appear to be "abuse cases" if they appeared in a shelter (and many of them do, because these behaviors can become overwhelming and guardians can feel too ashamed to return the dog to the breeder or worse, got it from an unethical breeder). Maybe their temperament was poorly bred, too, which compounded things. These dogs would end up in a shelter with a sob story and probably be adopted by kind hearted individuals who want to save the dog and tell everyone they rescued the dog.

This weird culture over having a "rescued dog" badge of honor leads many guardians who really would do better with an ethical breeder to adopt a shelter dog instead. And, as much as this pains me to say, shelter dogs (abused or not) are not for everyone. Shelter dogs can be a huge challenge. They have trauma, whether from the environment or the past, whether they are undersocialized or oversocialized. They will often come with behaviors that are not for the feint of heart, and certainly not for first time guardians. But people feel guilty buying from an ethical breeder and feel the need to defend their decision.

Marginal dogs are often adopted out to inexperienced guardians. Even going to an experienced guardian or trainer can cause rescue burn out. A family feeling the pressure of adopting and "rescuing" rather than getting a dog that is more practical for their lifestyle will adopt these dogs and sometimes get lucky, but often times end up with a dog they have no idea what to do with and may quickly return, leading to a revolving door for some dogs which adds to shelter trauma. A family who gets enough behavior problem dogs from a shelter without knowing where to find proper help ("this is just how they are because they were abused") WILL burn out and WILL make shelter dogs look like "all shelter dogs are bad dogs" and "all shelter dogs have behavior problems".

Shelter dogs are a big, beautiful unknown. They can be diamonds in the rough, or they can be a new learning experience for an upcoming dog trainer. They can be the inspiration for some to LEARN about training and behavior in dogs. They can be a therapy dog (Copper, who inspired my namesake, was such a dog), they can be a service dog, a sports dog, a working dog. They can be an anxious dog, a dog with separation anxiety, a dog with aggressive behavior towards certain triggers. They can be beautiful or funny looking (in the cutest ways) and graceful or clumsy as Scooby Doo (looking at Pancake right now). They can have past health issues that come back to haunt new owners or be more healthy than most purebreds.

So what does all of this mean? Who's better, purebreds or rescues?

I think the more important question is: what do you want in a dog, and what are you prepared to handle? Once you know that answer, you will know who is better for YOU.

Stop shaming ethical breeders. Stop shaming shelter dogs who have behaviors their guardians don't have the knowledge or resources to handle. Stop shaming those who bought from an unethical breeder unknowingly because they were never given the chance to learn. Stop shaming guardians who turn to breeders after having a bad experience with a shelter dog.

Educate. Show sympathy and kindness. Show them resources for any of these guardians. Why are huskies a challenging breed, and what can guardians do with a shelter dog that needs more help?

Dogs are dogs, and we love them. But we are doing a disservice by simply slotting them into "breeder vs rescue". We are ignoring the nuances of what these terms mean and we are not educating those who need it most to help those dogs who need it most.

We need to focus on our mutual love for dogs and educate those who do not have the knowledge, background, or resources to find it themselves.

It is no longer Wednesday, but what even are days of the week when it comes to the weird bit of time between Christmas and New Years? I was tagged by @wellhalesbells so here's a little bit of the only WIP I can currently share with you. This is my back-burner fic, which I pull out to work on when I don't have an event deadline looming over me. It hasn't seen much work recently, but it'll get finished eventually!

“Hey man, how’s it going?” Stiles breezes into the back room of the vet’s surgery with the confident air of someone who is definitely supposed to be there, despite the ‘staff only’ sign hung prominently on the door and the fact that Stiles is very much not a member of staff. Scott has been lacking in time for bro hangouts, though, so Stiles will take his company where he can get it. If that means it's while Scott is busy expressing the anal glands of an unenthusiastic beagle, so be it. “Yeah,” Scott says, as Stiles situates himself decisively at the head end of the dog, “Ricky here is about to be feeling a whole lot better, aren’t you buddy?” “You have my full support and sympathy, Ricky,” Stiles grimaces, reaching out to scratch behind the beagle’s ears as Scott pulls on a pair of gloves. “I don’t suppose you can hang after work today? There’s a new Thai place near mine that I’ve been wanting to try. Ally can come too?” “Sorry bro, dinner with the in-laws tonight. You can go and chill in the dog room for a bit while I deal with Ricky if you want? We’ve got a newcomer who might want some company, and I’m not sure we want a repeat performance of the last time you thought you could keep composure around bodily fluids.” Stiles shudders, thinking back to last week’s incident with Walter the French bulldog. The dog room is the best room at the vet’s surgery, and Stiles spends more of his free time in it than he really cares to admit. There’s nothing quite like cuddling with dogs and puppies to improve a shitty day, and Stiles finds himself in here even on days when Scott isn’t actually working. Kira, one of the veterinary nurses, is already in there, fussing over a puppy that looks more like a little white cloud than an actual dog. “Hey Kira, I thought I’d give Ricky a bit of privacy. Scotty says there’s a new best friend waiting for me in here.” “Hey Stiles, good to see you! I’m guessing he’s talking about this guy,” Kira shuts the cage door on the ball of fluff, smiling cheerfully at Stiles as she beckons him over to a cage in the corner, “want to come and meet him?” “Of all the stupid questions, Kira.” Stiles hurries himself over, crouching down so he can see the inhabitant, all black fur and mournful brown eyes. The dog perks up as soon as Stiles appears, assessing him with a careful stare and nosing forward to give Stiles’ fingers a tentative lick where he’s poking them through the wire of the cage door. Stiles is in love.

He never expects gifts or presents. But he is always happy and grateful to receive things. He is also not fussed with what the item is. If it came from his S/O then it's special.

His S/O has a large box ready for their anniversary. He can't think of what could be inside. But he is quite excited to find out.

He is very careful when opening the box. The sides fall to the side, revealing a small French Bulldog puppy.

"Chiot!" He yells in surprise, quickly picking up the excited puppy. He pulls it close to his face, letting it lick over his cheeks. He laughs happily, enjoying the pups affection.

"Mon amour!" He pulls his S/O in, peppering her face with a millions kisses. "Thank you."

He goes back to playing with the puppy, he lifts it, examining it and enjoying how adorable it looks. He then places the puppy in his lap, rubbing its belly and cooing over it.

He is so lucky to have a wonderful S/O that gets him brilliant gifts they know he will love. He adores the puppy and he adores his S/O.

He goes all out on making the perfect bed for them. He treats the puppy like royalty and like his baby. He gets them a super soft and big bed, along with cozy blankets. He gets them all the best toys including a toy box to hold them all. He only feeds them the best top quality dog food. And often steals real human food such as steak to treat his precious as well.

He takes the puppy everywhere he goes, carrying them around in his servos and letting them ride in his driver seat, often in his holoforms lap, when he drives somewhere.

fostering cats in beijing was really good for my mental health and it put me in touch with a community of animal lovers. taikoo lives paris and mango's forever home is in the UK. so when the opportunity came up to earn a little extra money in pet care, i thought it would be really nice to have animals in my life again.

now i'm house-sitting / dog-sitting for a family who is on summer vacation in europe (they're european). they have a 3 year old french bulldog named pavlo. this experience is teaching me that as much as i love dogs, i'm a cat person at heart and my lifestyle is more conducive for a cat. pavlo is a pandemic puppy and has never been left alone before so a major stipulation and why it was so hard to find someone is that i have to stay in their house. they also live quite far out in queens (like past the last stop on the 7 train). it actually works out since i'm a short enough distance where it's convenient for me to still stop by my apartment every 2 to 3 days.

french bulldogs are ... notoriously high needs dogs bc they're brachycephalic. i believe he already has had surgery for BOAS. he was the runt of his litter, has a merle coat, partial heterochromia in both eyes where each eye is half blue and half brown, apparently his snout is not as pushed in as it should be (i cannot imagine what other difficulties breathing he would have had if his snout met the breed standard bc he is struggling as is) and the pink nose he was born with didn't turn fully black.

he only drinks bottled european mineral water from a natural spring and after his walks, his paws get wiped down with baby wipes and he gets a spoonful of greek yoghurt to cool down, his favourite treats are freeze dried single ingredient salmon. his meals are a concoction involving his 100% human-grade ingredients pre-portioned fresh dog food and his supplements (like bovine colostrum ??) and dog-safe bone broth and fish oil. he needs eye drops consistently, doesn't know how to use the stairs so i have to carry him up to bed every night, has immense separation anxiety where i can't go to the bathroom or take a shower by myself (i do understand they've been selectively bred to be entirely dependent on their owners) and most terrifying of all for me is when i take him on walks, he sounds like a pig and i'm afraid he might get heat stroke / asphyxiate any moment.

understandably they have cameras around the house - which i thought was for me but then i realise the level of sight they were at and they were for the dog. the dad of the family told me that once he rushed home from his work day bc the cameras didn't detect any movement from pavlo all day - turns out he was just stuck on the stairs trying to go up them looking for his owners who were just out of the house at their jobs.

taking care of him brought this article to mind... i have complicated feelings about how much care this dog needs and the ethics on this breed's existence considering what it takes to give him the best quality of life he can have due to all his medical problems. the interesting thing is when i take him on walks, everyone he approaches says one or both of these things 1) he is so cute 2) does he have asthma ? is his breathing okay ? ... and i awkwardly smile and say he's okay, just excited but it really troubles me that ppl can really look at him and feel such endearment when i feel more distress and pity.

he is still a very sweet, loyal and cuddly dog and i'm glad for his sake that his family found someone he clicked with.

Hiyam Vinke, lead singer of (TBD)

Hiyam is not only the lead singer of the band, but she doubles as their social media manager. And that is a role Orion can take from her cold, dead, hands. She takes both jobs EXTREMELY seriously. 

She generally let’s (roflmao) the band post as themselves and what they want - the trust has been earned (.... for the most part) - but she curates pictures and soundbites (and etc) what’s as sharply as she dresses. Which is tres sharp. 

If there’s a on-stage Hiyam and an off-stage Hiyam, the line between is very thin. She dresses like she stepped off a runway for fashion models turned CEOs almost at all times. 

The main difference for the stage is that the ‘fits are flowier. Because Hiyam loves to dance, and is very good at it. 

Hiyam has two dogs. A doberman named Daisy. And not too long ago they got a puppy to heal her and Daisy’s broken heart named Ḍurbān. Ḍurbān is a french bulldog and is as prickly as his name. 

People think that Hiyam removes her glasses to pull a Giles. But truth is she also does it when she doesn’t care about something or doesn’t want to be caught staring.

My mother has just adopted a 5 year old pure-bred pug today. Yes we are aware we have let ourselves in for a lifetime of health issues but we are prepared for that. He's a breeding stud that is being retired, first thing tomorrow Mum will make an appointment to have him neutered. I am judging the breeder so hard.

First of all I'd judge them anyway because I think it's unethical to breed an animal specifically for features that people think are cute but are actually going to cause health problems. This poor boy's breathing sounds like a choo choo train, his face is so squashed in, he has no bridge to his nose. I can already tell from looking at the positioning of his teeth that we're going to have to keep and eye on them and he'll have to have some out at some point. We're going to have to be suuuuuuuper careful with his weight.

But also it was too easy to adopt him. Like, Mum went into a local pet shop last Saturday to look at the puppies, she didn't really want a puppy but she wanted to have a look. She asked the owner if she knew of any older dogs that needed a home and she pointed out the Pug/French Bulldog puppy for sale and said his dad was being retired from breeding. On Monday she'd arranged with the breeder to take the dog into the pet shop on Tuesday morning so Mum could bring Rosie (our chihuahua) in to meet him, we knew our greyhound, Bee, wasn't going to be a problem, Rosie is the territorial one who has small-man syndrome. We took Rosie in this morning and the meeting went ok, she's establishing dominance but he seems happy to let her. I expected it to just be a meeting but we've bought him home. We were right and Bee is being super laid back with him, he seems to be really laid back too. Rosie will take a little while to accept that he's not challenging her and she's still top dog.

But I was not expecting to actually bring him home today. I thought the breeder might want a couple of meetings, maybe to talk to us and make sure we'd be responsible pet owners. But nope, just like that we were allowed to take him. They just dumped him on the first people who came along who didn't want a puppy.

So now we have a family of 3 pure bred rescue dogs. Bee the ex-racing greyhound, Rosie the chihuahua who was sold for drug money, and Doug the pug.

Are you named after anyone? Yes. Grandpa Scott (my dad’s dad) passed away a few days before I was born. His name was also Ryan.

When was the last time you cried? A few days ago when my hunny bunny Zachary proposed. He totally surprised me! I’m not ashamed to say I snot-cried.

Do you have kids? Not yet...

Do you use sarcasm? Sarcasm? Moi? Never.

What's the first thing you notice about people? Their outfit. It’s my job!

Scary movies or happy endings? Scary movies all day! I love the adrenaline rush.

Any special talents? I discovered in college that I’m really good at juice pong.

What are your hobbies? Creating videos for my Simtube channel, gourmet cooking and yoga (I even tried teaching yoga classes in college. That did not go well lol)

Have you any pets? We have a French Bulldog named Lulu - she’s team Zach though. I’m still trying to convince him to let me get another puppy.

What sports do you play/have played? Walking in six-inch heels. I don’t care what anyone says, that’s a sport.

Dream job? My dream job was to become a Fashion Stylist. Thankfully, I was able to make that dream come true. My new focus though is on the next chapter with Z.
