If I could give you a gift today, I would give you the gift of courage to be who you are without thought of how others feel or think. Recovery systems reference the idea of a  higher power as an influence that stands with us and stands between us and our self - destructive behavior. One of our most self - destructive behaviors as humans is giving others control and power over how we feel about ourselves. From birth, the social order seeks to comtrol how we think about ourselves by programming us to fit in. Adolescence arrives and most of us want to fit in to the extent we sacrifice our individuality by doing things to be liked. The ultimate tragedy for too many of us is never maturing beyond this approach. To deny the expression of our uniqueness and our gifts to fit in, to go along to get along is to deny life and love and to sacrifice the highest level contribution we might make. Courage is necessary to the evolution to self - love, to know we are connected to all that is. Love alone is the ultimate tool of recovery available to all of us who would become our best selves to to give to life and to give to love. Courage is required to value ourselves and to distinquish ourselves from what the multi - talented @donna.valentine calls the Mass Consciousness Mindset.  When we love ourselves enough to liberate ourselves from trying to be like everybody else, your recovery will have been achieved.
