Community management

This kind of falls under all three but generally Every part of the game feels unfinished and detached from the rest. Quests don't match up. Basic visual objects (clothing, tack) glitch through each other. Added content is frequently blatantly untested.

I'm not even diving into the dynamics within the company itself.

Or its horrendous marketing.

Also in game items have big inflation problems. Largely caused by the fact that the max amount of js a player can carry at any given time is capped at an amount you can max out in a day or two, which is automatically also a Very Low maximum that you can price an item.

The half-hearted retrofitting whenever they update a part of the game. Horse speed breaking quests. Retrofitting new tack to basic horses. This kind of ties back into point number one.

Things that I Genuinely Like about SSO/are done really well/have no better alternative in the games industry:

Sound design? I feel like people don't talk about this enough. Not just the music but also atmospheric elements are really well done, even if the game struggles with sound triggers sometimes. I especially like the horse-related sounds, as stupid as it sounds. If i can ride a horse in a video game I'm judging it by the noises the horse's hooves make. SSO is like right below tears of the kingdom in that for me.

Map design: It's frankly very impressive how every spot in Jorvik has really good views, and the balance between feeling like places are miles away and giving you excellent traveltime, while still being dense with locations and quest opportunities. Epona feels like three days of travel away, and yet from the right spot you can simply see the castle on the other side of the water!

Individual visual design: I like the look of the new player models (put your nostalgia goggles away. the old shit looks like it belongs in 2005 with oldschool runescape and you know it), same goes with horses, tack, even things like trees and environmental objects. The main problem is the janky mismatch between objects, which traces back to the lack of cohesive long-term vision and planning when it comes to developing the game as a whole, instead of individual parts and pieces.

The thing that actually inspired this post: as troublesome as the js economy is in the game, they've Genuinely hit the mark with starcoins. The goal of a premium currency is the delicate balance between getting as much real-life benefits from your players (whether that be ad revenue or simple direct payment for it) while giving them enough new goodies through it that it makes it worth it for players to put in that extra effort. No company in the industry gives away premium currency on a whim. The 100sc per week, which translates to 5 new horses per year and the occasional bonus if you've saved up more over time, is an excellent structure. You get to buy horses for free if you just wait long enough. You don't need to pay beyond your standard star rider price (and if you haven't bought the permanent version. what are you doing. paying for the pay once option pays itself back in 11 months over the monthly option, and 12 months for the quarterly option. Not even counting the bonus sc you get to begin with). Free weekly sc that are enough for a magic horse 4 times a year, plus a bonus horse or several pets, is an Amazing community service they're frankly doing. And from a company perspective? They are never going to change this in a way that is more beneficial to you. Because the goal of premium currency is not to buy horses, it's to earn the company money. It is the Main way the company earns money. And the 100sc works excellent because it's doing exactly what it needs to do: It's keeping you coming back to buy their new horses, and then makes you go "man I wish I had even more sc", thus tempting you into buying sc. Any increase in starcoins will be the opposite of an incentive to spend money on the game. If management is really stupid and desperate for cash, they will, if anything, decrease the amount of sc you earn, or more subtly increase the price of the things you can buy with it. Because that's what gets you going "Well if I spend just 20 euros, I can buy both new magic horses, and the Dutch Warmblood when it releases in a month."

Starcoins hits a really fucking good sweet spot between earning the company money, and doing a genuine community service by making it accessible on the basic paid version.

What I use all the Terra path stuff for

As an avid user of the path of Terra, here’s my list of what is and isn’t worth crafting!

Jars of wisdom: don’t tbh. Not really worth it there’s better stuff.

Seeds: turn them into light for money

Hay: free horse food + it gives you 5 light for crafting it so it also earns you money

Glow-get-my-stuff: now you’re going to need to use fillers to pick a place to put these in your inventory before crafting it (I use top right corner). But these are really useful for Dino archeology. Outside of that I barely use them honestly, but if you want a wisp for your photo outside of hollow woods they’re also useful!

Travel dust: ok hear me out. No longer do you need to go to a trailer to fasttravel. Yes the travel dust still leads you to a trailer but you can use travel powder anywhere! For free! This also saves you 25 js AND gives you 5 light for crafting it. So technically you’re earning 30 js by using it!

Happy horse treats: never use starcoins for stable care ever again. Literally just feed your horse treats to get them back to full health and speed when you want to ride them

I personally really like it, and think it's worth it (though I do recommend that if you buy lifetime, you do it when a double starcoins deal or a discount deal is ongoing), but I am a player who has been here for almost a decade now (4 of which as a paying member) and has sso as a special interest, so I might be biased.

The storyline is decent, but has its flaws. Sometimes it can be a bit cheesy, but, as far as I remember, not immersion-breakingly so. In terms of characters, some are memorable, some not as much - which is which really depends on the player themselves, imo. Some people get invested, some don't.

The map and horses are great! They are still working on renewing certain areas, but the updates they do are not just graphics updates, but complete overhauls. The character customization has also been greatly improved and diversified by the character model update, and there's a lot more clothing and tack styles to chose from now.

I think there's some gameplay in a lot of categories - some grindy, some pretty quick one-and-dones, some that take you a short while, some that can last you a pretty long while (and still be useful to maintain even after you've unlocked everything on it).

I don't think SSO is very childish, although the tutorial can be a bit frustrating and slow-going, and the starting quests in Moorland do still suffer a bit from their age. A lot of early dayblockers have been removed, though, which should allow you to progress through the early game faster. (Which I suppose is good, since they now give you 3 days of free starrider when you make your account)

The sso community can be frustrating and overwhelmingly negative depending on platform; a lot of people who hate what the game has become now, mainly in a graphics sense (personally I like to call them nostalgiafuckers, but y'know), but in my opinion ssoblr is one of the better communities out there.

I don't engage a lot with in-game chat, so I can't tell you much about that.

I do agree that it can be limiting as a free player, but I think that was intended - the freeplay aspect is more like a demo rather than a full non-paying experience.

TLDR: There's good sides and bad sides, but I think in the end, it's worth it, and one of the best horse games out there right now. I'd say, try the free 3 days of starrider, and if after that you're interested, get starrider while there's a good deal going on (the normal bundle + tack deals aren't worth it, but subscription discounts and double starcoins are).

what are y’all’s honest opinions of sso? i’ve been looking for fun multiplayer horse games that aren’t cheap cash grabs or patronizingly childish. i tried sso a couple times but just couldn’t get into it, it felt so limited with what you could do as a free player and didn’t give me enough to figure out if its worth spending money on.

i’m not fond of subscriptions, i’m of the “buy the game once and it’s yours” mindset. but $80 is a lot to spend on something that i can’t even tell if it’s worth paying for at all, let alone nearly a hundred dollars.

They could hear the heavy footsteps of the knight's sabatons approaching, along with the various items clattering against each other with each step inside the typical bright red shopping basket. Even behind the counter, Shadow Cashier could taste his unhappiness. Yup, they're not going to make it out alive this time, might as well get it over with...

The waddle dee slowly gets up and takes a deep breath before hopping onto a stool. Usually, this allowed them to reach their customers' eye levels, but in this case, it helped the cashier face their doomed fate.

Through the scarred mask, his eyes glared piercingly at the waddle dee. The cashier grips their chest, preparing themselves for the painful blades of Dark Meta Knight. That sword's branches never get any better the second time, not to mention that if one of those get stuck in their ribs...ah, they were already thinking about death. Well,atleast they won't feel too bad about it. The iron clad astral stepped closer..

"You're out of tomato soup."

"Yes sir, we're out of stock....."

Shadow Cashier Dee IMMEDIATELY flinched away as soon as they responded but the knight...seemed less angry? The cold, dark aura surrounding him also died down, not to mention that the overwhelming bloodlust that usually radiate from Dark Meta Knight appears to be absent. The waddle dee hesitantly turned their head back to take a closer look at the knight.

"Hm, how unfortunate."

"Y-yes sir...."

"Hey, you. What's your name?"

"E-eh?!? Well you- you can call me Cashier Dee, everyone does..."

Huh? Is he...talking to them? Are they actually having a conversation after all this time? Shadow Cashier Dee couldn't believe his eyes, this never happened before....

"Cashier Dee, if a shop like this exits in our realm, then would Dreamland have something similar?"

"I- Well maybe- no- yes!!! There would be!"

They clasp their hands together, nodding prefusely as an attempt to satisfy the knight's inquiries.

"Then that would mean, they'd still have tomato soup."

"Mhm...."

"Hey, how much does a can cost?

"I-it's about 14 starcoins s-sir."

"......"

The knight looks off towards the distance, as if he's in deep thought. This confused the waddle dee, why was he suddenly so tame? Wasn't he completely irritated earlier? Maybe...it wasn't directed at the store, maybe he was angry at something else..

Multiple questions popped in the cashier's head, overwhelming their little head. Ultimately, they just shrugged them off. It wasn't their business anyway-

"Lend me money."

"E-excuse me?- WAAAA!!!-"

The blade pierced through the protective glass, shattering it completely. The waddle dee narrowly escaped the blade by a hair's breadth, tumbling backwards and falling onto the cold, hard ground.

"That wasn't a question."

"Y-YES SIR!! I'LL GET YOUR MONEY RIGHT AWAY!!"

They hurriedly gathered the coins from the cashier box and gave it to the Dark Meta Knight, trying to steady their breathing so their trembling won't shake the coins out of their stubby little arms. With a quick swipe, the knight takes the money and immediately leaves, soaring straight out of the store before the automated doors could even open.

"......hmph, Dark Meta Knight? More like Dark Meta Hobo...."

"EXCUSE ME SIR!"

"WaAAAaAAaaAaAAAAAHHHH!!"

Suddenly, another waddle dee popped up from out of nowhere and almost scared the just-spared life out of the cashier!

"I would like to use this coupon!"

"Now hold on a second WHERE DID YOU COME FROM!?!"

"Not important! This coupon says that I can get a free ice cream, I want to use it!"

"Alright, give it here...........sorry, it's expired."

"W-what?! That can't be right! Can't you make an exception? It's just one ice cream! I had to hold my breath hiding in the oranges the entire time!"

"Alright, alright! Calm down and go get your damn ice cream or whatever. I don't care anymore."

"hmph, that's what I thought."

Satisfied with the cashier's defeat, the waddle dee strides in triumph to claim it's deserved award. It finds the freezer and picks up an ice cream cone with glee. However, that happiness was short-lived, as for the moment it took it out of the freezer, the waddle dee immediately scowled. They angrily stomped back at the counter and slammed their fists on its surface.

"this....this ice cream is melted!! You didn't even take care of the freezer properly!"

"Hm, someone must've tripped over the power cord during the evacuation. So now all the ice creams melted."

"EXCUSES!!"

"*sigh...*"

Shadow Cashier Dee reaches down under the counter.

"You aren't even doing your job properly! I know when someone's just damn lazy!"

They locate a safe

"I'm a customer, you can't treat me like this!!!"

They input the password aaaaand....

"I demand to talk to your manager!!"

"I am the manager."

Shadow Cashier Dee equips the harpoon!

".....understandable, have a nice day!"

The waddle dee quickly took the melted Frosty Delight and ran straight out the store, not wanting to become a dee shish kebab today!

"Damn straight. *sigh*, now I have to rebuild this shop again...."

Meanwhile...

The dark knight managed to make it out of the Mirror World and is now hiding somewhere behind the trees and bushes of an unknown location. Knowing his counterpart's reputation and his appearance, the knight knew he needed a disguise, or atleast to get rid of the mask due to it being the main feature to distinguish Meta Knight.

So he took it off.

Unlike his counterpart, he doesn't mind showing his face despite knowing the reason why Meta Knight keeps it hidden. The mask immediately vanished into thin air once it was removed, teleporting away to a safe place. When that was done, he scratched out the "M" on his right pauldron completely. Satisfied with his work, Dark Meta Knight sets out to Orange Ocean to find Pupupu mart.

all FACTS! This update is purely cosmetic. You are not required to participate in the microtransactions. Just because they are an option doesn't mean you need to take it. This update gives us 1 stable design completely free (the default, which was recently refreshed), plus 1 BRAND NEW stable design for almost free (like less than 20 shillings). And if you want more than that, there are options to earn by playing the game OR using starcoins.

YES, some are starcoin exclusive, but there are tons of other starcoin exclusive items in the game. Pets, some clothes, horses!! It's not unheard of, and frankly is expected. I agree, the prices would feel more comfortable 20-25% lower, but its a cosmetic, and this is an mmo. They kinda go hand in hand.

IT'S JUST CLOTHES FOR YOUR STABLE.

Do I think the stable customization options are a little high? Sure. I think they should overall come down about 20% or at least make sure none are above 90sc.

But also at the end of the day colorful stables won't change your gameplay. Its not pivitol to the storyline. I can honestly say I visit my stable for maybe 5 mins anytime i login, and sometimes not at all! And I doubt that will change by me changing the colors of it.

They gotta pay their employees and there are options to get it with shillings. No one is putting a gun to your head and making you buy star coins. They're giving options for it to be fully at no cost to you.

It's always easy to want to buy something *right now* because it's new, but that's on the individual. This isn't timed. It's not going anywhere. You can save up.

This is kind of controversial Discussion now. Those who got one, spent StarCoins and bought the Horses. Its not like we got them for free or used Bugs to get them. so i had this au that came out of nowhere a few hours ago and im REALLY hyped about it!!

basically, all cats are anthro, all of the clans are kingdoms and they all have castles for the high ranked cats, and residential districts for the "normies" of the clan (aka warriors, medicine cats, apprentices, ect.).

there'd be a priest role instead of having it be connected to the med cats, and there'd probably be generals who're ranked below the deputy and just go and order around the warriors and assign patrols. deputies would make sure that everything is going smoothly inside the clan while leaders are in charge of the clan's public image and important tasks and decisions, such as taking in a cat from a rival clan, keeping up with the clan's money, ect.

each clan has their own type of weapon. thunderclan has swords. riverclan has harpoons and very primitive cannons, windclan has bow and arrows, and shadowclan has daggers and blow darts.

in this au, thunderclan would def be the more lighthearted and energetic clan. they have a marketplace in their clan square, are very artistically talented, and on things like family and relationships. in their castle, they definitely have rooms and halls full of paintings of high ranks and notable cats in the past. in their throne room, there are several statues all lined up, all depicting previous leaders.

straying away from the gentle stereotype i think it has, riverclan is a rough and tough pirate clan. they primarily use boats for transportation and will often steal pawcoins (the currency in this au) from other cats, though its mainly from thunderclan and windclan. riverclan definitely has a pile of treasure and loot in their castle, most of it probably being either stolen loot or cool shiny things that they found and turned in to their clan's stock. loyalty and obedience are highly valued traits here.

shadowclan is a more mysterious and distant clan. the thick pines above the dark swamp and the misty fog that i hc their territory to have allows them to lay low and be very secretive. in their castle, shadowclan has a public library where their cats can learn not only the history of their clan, but also history and information about the other clans as well. shadowclan cats are very self-reliant and distant from even their own clanmates. however, when conflict arises within the clan, they have a huge ditch not too far from their camp that they use partially as a training area and partially as an arena to settle beef. strength and intelligence are core traits in this clan.

windclan is a heavily religious and pacifist clan in this au. focusing more on their faith towards starclan, windclan tries to keep itself out of conflicts and instead serves more as a mediator, especially during gatherings. windclan cats are constructionists and are by far the best builders of the original clans. its not uncommon to find statues built in honor of starclan in windclan. in fact, windclan often has "church" every evening where they pray to, worship, and give thanks to starclan. many cats here are quite musical and have made songs and hymns in honor of them. faith in starclan, loyalty to one's family and clan, and pacifism are important traits in windclan.

kittypets often live in small, yet closely knit groups far from the clans, preferring the simple, peaceful life that they live from the more eventful and hectic lives of the clan cats. they grow their own food and use equipment like axes and shovels in battle. loners live similar lives, though often in family groups.

rogues often live in groups as usually untrustworthy, deceitful nomads who'll use and trick others for their own self gain. rogues usually have a hate for the clans and will jump and rob lone, unsuspecting cats, leading to smaller clans becoming wary of them. unlike the other groups of cats, rogues will use anything around them as a weapon, and will mercilessly kill a cat if they feel like they must.

pawcoins are the currency of use in this au, being used by both cats inside and outside of the clans. they're small, diorite coins with a paw symbol in the middle. although they're the only clan really asking for this change, windclan would like pawcoins to be discontinued and for starcoins, a prototype gold coin with a star shape in the middle.

im hoping to someday use this au for a rp or fanfic, but if anyone would like to use it, feel free to! id love to see other people using it!!

How buying horses with shilling could be possible

Hey all and welcome to another post of mine. Today I want to talk about horses, and more specifically, how we buy them. Now, people asking to be able to buy horses with shillings are not new at all. And many people response seems to be that, it’s not possible, that SSO’s team would loose a lot of money. And to that, I say, Yes, but actually no. Here’s what I have in mind to make it possible.

I went ahead to a stall to buy the most basic item of all: hay. A full haybale is sold for 500 Shillings, or 20 starcoins. Now, please note that I suck HARD at maths, and that I may be completely wrong on my calculations. But according to them, 1 shilling is 0.04 of a starcoin. that means that 25 shillings is 1 starcoin. Wich makes sense if we look at the single hay bit that is sold for 50 shillings, or 2 starcoins. (I didn’t saw that until later, so please don’t scream at me.)  

Most horses are sold for 950 SC, that equals to 23 750 JS. Wich seems like a reasonable price for a free horse. By free I mean we don’t have to spend actual money on them. 

For this to be possible, SSO would need to lift the Shillings limit. To make it a little more practical, let’s say that they lift it a 25 000. 

If you’ve been playing the game for a while, you know that getting 10 000 shillings, a.k.a the current limit, isn’t that fast. With all the trailer uses, or the suddent urge to buy a new saddle pad, it can take some time, Just imagine getting to almost 24000. I’m pretty sure it would take about a week, maybe more.

Now all of this is based on a basic conversion of shillings vs starcoins. SSO could actually make the price significantly higher, like 100 000 Shillings for example. If we add to this the starcoin only items like some tack and clothing, many people would still buy starcoins. Especially older players who doesn’t have that many, if any quests left to do aside from their daily training and horse care in all the available stables.

Another option i’ve seen floating around is a shilling to starcoin exchange system, but that wouldn’t be possible. As I said, some items are starcoin only and should remain like that. SSO devs are people who needs to put food on the table, and since the game is free to play, most of their income is from starcoin sales. If such a thing was ever put into the game, the sales would drop drastically. Their salaries would follow, and many devs would need to be kicked out of the team, as there simply isn’t enough money to pay them. That would mean that the game development would be slowed down a lot. 

note: They could limit the SC horse purchase to one horse/month to keep their SC income to about the same as now.
