Gonna rant for a second I've been anti-audible for a while --well over a decade, though it wasn't always a position of "Fuck Amazon" --I didn't see the point of paying for access to 1-3 audiobooks per month when I was reading that in a week for free from my library. Did I have to wait sometimes? Sure. but also I was reading 1-3 audiobooks in a week. There were other audiobooks to listen to in the week while I waited --and so I listened to my less popular series while waiting for the more popular series. (for context, the time I'm taking about I was working at a bakery that allowed me to have headphones in, as there were never customers (we worked in a warehouse and shipped to stores and restaurants) so I was listening to 40 hrs a week plus commute times, plus times when I was playing the sims) But what I especially hate is audible exclusives. I had (wrongly) assumed that if a book was audible exclusive, there would be no way to get the book in other formats elsewhere. I run a book club. We democratically select the books for the next year, as long as they are within a few guidelines (we have length requirements within the founding guidelines, we must be able to source them through the public library with the help of the ILL specialist, and I research each book for things like content, pacing, heaviness --so we don't have two slow somber books in a row, mostly, but also so I don't have more than one horror novel in a year type thing. Keeps the books interesting, and keeps the choices balanced.)
One book, requested last year by three members and so very much quickly made the list, ended up being an audible exclusive. I did not check for audible exclusivity when I was making the list --my club wanted to read a book, and I could see that we could get copies of the book, confirmed by the ILL specialist. Great!
Except!!! Except this is an accessibility issue. If someone, for any given reason, needs an audiobook to access this book club (as I often do as someone with adhd for ease but do not need need. I can get by with no audiobook if I must, but if someone has vision issues, well.). If someone needs it and does not want to or have the ability to pay for an audible subscription, they are locked out of that month's book club.
And man that fucking sucks.
#i just needed to rant#im aughhhhhh#the guidelines past the initial ones the original members set up are democratic#meaning that though it is functionally *my* book club I do not make sweeping rules or judgements#I have vague veto power#meaning i can do research on a book and decide it's not good for the club#mostly I do this only for balance reasons as above#but the books still go on a spreadsheet for later access#meaning if it keeps getting suggested I have a tally of how many times it was requested and will relent#but i also use it to select the horror books we read if we read them#fine with allowing horror as i am a fan of horror but it has to be the right level of horror#only about half the group tolerates horror but they're all willing to go ok yeah one a year max is fine#and I've shown them how to get the content warnings and do their research to decide if they're willing to give it a chance it all works out#not the point anyway fuck amazon#fuck audible#check your local library website to see what they do offer#''im in a small town they probably don't--'' check anyway#im so serious check anyway oftentimes small libraries will be in consortium with larger libraries or will have access to things through the#state library#at least in the usa#u may also be surprised at the other things u can get#free seeds for your garden is p common#magazines and puzzles and games and books and audiobooks and classes and programs#ok done in the tags go to the library sorry#well not sorry about go to the library#sorry about the ranting

Beginning Seed Saving for the Home Gardener by Jim Ulager
This volume explores how seed saving is not only easier than we think, but that it is essential for vibrant, independent, and bountiful gardens.
Many home gardeners refuse to eat a grocery store tomato, but routinely obtain seeds commercially, sometimes from thousands of miles away. Coverage includes:
Why seed saving belongs in the home garden
Principles of vegetative and sexual reproduction
Easy inbreeding plants, including legumes, lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers
Plants with a few more challenges, including squash, spinach, onions, and parsley
Brief discussion of more difficult crops, including corn, carrots, and cabbage.
Written by a home seed saver for the home seed saver, Beginning Seed Saving for the Home Gardener is a comprehensive guide for those who want to reclaim our seed heritage, highlighting the importance of saving seeds for you, your neighbors, and most importantly, subsequent generations.

Stock Market Basics for Beginners: How to Start Trading in India
Picture this: You open a stock market chart for the first time, and it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie. Been there! When I first started, those squiggly lines and mysterious numbers might as well have been ancient hieroglyphs. But here’s the good news—if this confused beginner could figure it out, you absolutely can too.
Tumblr media
The Story That'll Surprise You:
Did you know something fascinating? Right here in India, our National Stock Exchange (NSE) isn’t just big—it’s the world’s largest derivatives exchange by volume. Pretty impressive, right? But wait till you hear this: from 2019 to 2023, Demat accounts in India exploded from 35 million to over 110 million. Think about it—that’s like the entire population of a small country joining the investment world!
And if you’re thinking, “Isn’t this just for rich folks?”—the Sensex has a story to tell. From a modest 1,000 points in the ‘90s to dancing above 60,000 today, it’s proof that patience pays off in the market.
Getting Started: Your Step-by-Step Journey
The Essential Toolkit đŸ—‚ïž
Just like you wouldn’t cook without ingredients, you can’t trade without these basics: ✔ PAN Card (Your financial identity) ✔ Aadhaar Card ✔ An active bank account ✔ Proof of address ✔ A few passport photos ✔ Recent bank statements (especially if you’re eyeing derivatives)
Setting Up Your Trading Hub đŸ’»
You’ll need two key players:
A Demat Account – Your digital share vault.
A Trading Account – Your market gateway.
💡 Pro Tip: Check out platforms like Zerodha Kite, ICICI Direct, or Angel Broking. They’ve made the process so smooth that you can set everything up online in just 2-3 days!
Speaking Stock Market Language 📚
Remember how confusing cricket commentary was before you learned the game? Market terms are similar:
Market Cap = A company’s league ranking.
Volume = Today’s popularity contest.
P/E Ratio = The “Is it worth it?” number.
Dividend Yield = Your patience reward.
Volatility = The stock’s drama quotient.
Your Path to Success 💰
Let me share some wisdom I wish someone had shared with me:
The Golden Rules ✹
✔ Start tiny (seriously, no need to go big). ✔ Only invest what won’t keep you up at night. ✔ Mix things up (different stocks = better sleep). ✔ Keep emotions in the backseat. ✔ Always have an exit plan (for both wins and losses).
Smart Money Moves 💡
The 20% Rule: Save first, then invest.
Age-Based Planning: 100 minus your age = stock percentage.
Time Horizon: Think 5+ years for real results.
Mistakes to Skip (Thank Me Later!) đŸš«
We all stumble, but here’s your cheat sheet to avoid the big ones: ❌ Going in blind (research is your best friend). ❌ Following random “experts” (social media isn’t your financial advisor). ❌ The one-stock gamble (spread those wings!). ❌ Playing with borrowed money (just
no). ❌ Emotional trading (your gut isn’t always right).
Level Up Your Market Game 📈
Think of this like building a skill tree:
Foundation Skills:
✔ Make financial news your morning coffee companion. ✔ Join investor communities (learn from others’ wins and oops moments). ✔ Attend Mudrank webinars & workshops (knowledge = power). ✔ Practice with paper trading (free mistakes!).
Track Your Journey:
✔ Keep a trading diary. ✔ Note your “why” for every trade. ✔ Monthly review sessions (celebrate wins, learn from losses).
Your Reading List 📚
Want to dig deeper? These books changed my game:
📘 Trading Adventures:
Technical Analysis of Financial Markets – Murphy’s chart magic.
How to Make Money in Stocks – O’Neil’s success blueprint.
Trading in the Zone – Master your trading mindset.
📗 Long-term Wealth Building:
The Intelligent Investor – Buffett’s bible.
Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits – Fisher’s wisdom gems.
One Up On Wall Street – Lynch’s street-smart guide.
Ready to Begin? 🚀
Remember: The stock market isn’t a casino—it’s more like growing a garden. Plant your seeds, tend them carefully, and watch your wealth flourish over time.
Your Launch Sequence:
✔ Document collection ✅ ✔ Account setup ✅ ✔ Basic learning (you’re doing it now!) ✅ ✔ Paper trading practice ✅ ✔ Small, real investments ✅
Every market wizard started exactly where you are. They just took that first step and kept walking.
📱 Drop your questions below! What’s holding you back from starting your investment journey? Let’s tackle those concerns together! đŸŒ±
💡 Remember: The best investment you can make is in learning. Start small, stay curious, and enjoy the journey!

↳ JAIME LANNSITER NSFW ALPHABET | MASTERLIST
Fandom: Game of Thrones
Request: —
Word Count: 2176
A/N: i didn’t really picture any particular season/version for this but in hindsight, it fits later-seasons jaime a lot better imo. but feel free to imagine it however you want!!
Tumblr media
A - AFTERCARE
While Jaime is sweet and very caring about you after sex, he’s not the best at aftercare. He tries, don’t get me wrong. But he seems to get easily distracted. He always gets busy talking to you about whatever has plagued him on that day, holding you close to his warm body. It always takes him a second to realize what he’s doing, just rambling to you, but once he realizes, he immediately “corrects” himself. Tightening his hold on you, pulling you closer. Planting a small kiss on your forehead, playing with your hair softly as he just looks at you, admiring your immense beauty. If it was a particularly rough session, he checks over you for bruises or visible marks that would show outside of your clothes, and feels quite guilty if he’s left a big one or has truly hurt you in any way.
B - BODY PART
Jaime loves every single part of you... But he’s very partial to your curves. Your waist, your ass, your stomach. Looking, touching, holding, playing... He loves to leave the bright red blotches on your backside from where he spanked you when he took you from behind, marking you all up, making sure you knew exactly who you belonged to. Admiring the perfect handprints that he left, still not completely faded by the next morning.
C - CUM/COME
Before he lost his human hand and gained the golden one, Jaime was a hell of a lot bolder, sexually, always coming on your face and tits and completely painting you with the white ropes of come. Making you even more of a masterpiece, in his eyes, now that you’re marked with his seed. But now, after all that he’s been through? He probably just prefers to come inside your cunt (always whispering something under his breath about giving you a son) or your mouth. Or when he pulls out, onto your back and ass. That’s his favorite. Although arguably the messiest, he loves it. He would crave the quiet acceptance and warmth and sweetness that comes with the feeling of spraying his seed into you. It’s something he’s never felt with anyone else-- not with Cersei, not with any whore he’s been with, not any foreign royal or goddamn anyone that’s not you.
‘D - DIRTY SECRET
Jaime has definitely imagined using his golden hand on you before. He never truly would, even if the perfect opportunity arose or even if you asked him to, for fear or hurting you or maybe even making you sick. But he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t loosely fantasized about having it inside you before... His favorite fantasy is far filthier than anything he’d do now, later on, but definitely something he’d have done before all of it. His cock in your ass, his golden hand in your own hands, sinking into your dripping cunt. He simply dreamed of it.
E - EXPERIENCE
Jaime loved Cersei for most of his life, yes, but you’d be a fool to assume he didn’t have a few other women along the way. Whores and secret nighttime lovers, women from taverns and inns begging for the Kingslayer’s cock, highborn ladies and prudish visiting Royals, all looking for a handsome and respectable man to spend the night with and cure their boredom. It’s safe to say that he’s had a bit of experience, but each time he found himself in bed with a woman, he was too focused on chasing his own pleasure to concern himself with the girl. He never learned much that way. It was with Cersei that he took his time and learned a woman’s body.
F - FAVORITE POSITION
Taking you from behind. He loves nothing more than seeing the way your ass bounces against his cock, his big hands roaming your ass, placing sharp smacks every time he feels like it. He loves hearing the gasps and whines that fall from your lips when he does that. Bringing his hand down to meet your asscheek, the warmth that comes from the strike. the shy second of pain, and then the immense pleasure that follows, shooting straight to your cunt.
G - GOOFY
It really depends on the situation. If it’s a rough, violent, throw-you-down-and-fuck-you kind of session, then he’s rather serious. Very focused on the task at hand. But if it’s something more along the lines of morning sex, where he’s just woken up and is smiley and happy and sweet, he’s not afraid to be a little humorous. Or just in general if it’s more of a gentle thing, he’ll definitely crack a joke or let the sarcasm out.
H - HAIR
Jaime always keeps himself rather well groomed. He hates for things at all to be messy, let alone himself. He prefers to keep everything about him clean and trimmed and proper.
I - INTIMACY
Jaime is very good at the whole intimacy thing. With you, at least. He knows what he’s doing, the perfect things that you adore the most, and how much you love it when he’s soft and sweet and romantic. When things slow down and he truly shows you how much he loves you, purely with his actions. It’s not so common that the two of you ever just take a second like that, so when you finally do, it’s heaven for the both of you. Jaime never really had these moments with Cersei, so he truly does treasure them.
J - JACK OFF
Honestly, since he lost his natural hand, he doesn’t do it as often. It feels... Off. It’s not something he particularly enjoys anymore. However, Jaime absolutely is a little tease, definitely preferring for you to do it for him at his little suggestion. He loves when the two of you are lying in bed together or even just sitting together. He always gets a little closer to you before slowly moving your hand to rest on his lap, then moving it towards his hardening cock at a painstakingly slow pace.
K - KINK
He’s not really sure if he would call it a kink, necessarily, but he loves having sex in places that are a little bit more public... Namely, places where there’s a possibility of Cersei finding the two of you. He knows that his life would be absolute never ending hell if she ever dared to see it, but God... It’s almost worth it for him. He would love taking you in the oddest of places. Against the stone wall in an empty corridor of the Red Keep, somewhere in the gardens, in the bathroom while in the bath together. That’s just a few of them.
L - LOCATION
He’s down for almost anything anywhere, to be honest. There isn’t really a clear yes/no line for him. Jaime certainly prefers the comfort and seclusion of your shared bedroom, but he loves the thrill and newness of fucking you in more unusual places.
M - MOTIVATION
Playful, shy little teases throughout the day. Quick glances in the hall as the two of you cross paths. He savors the little things. Jaime is good at keeping a calm, measured composure, but when he sees you staring at him from across the lunch hall... He can’t help but crack a smile at you. Or when he sees you in the corridor and your hand brushes against his as the two of you walk past one another, making him forget entirely what he was supposed to be doing for the day. All of his stress melts away for a moment as he gets distracted, letting you fill up his mind, and that honestly gets him going pretty well.
N - NO
Jaime would never, absolutely never, share you with another person. Man nor woman, you are his, and only his. Mind, body, soul, all his, just as he is yours. He would also likely not try anything that he deems too gross or too messy.
O - ORAL
Jaime definitely doesn’t have much of a preference on giving or receiving oral. On one hand, he loves seeing you kneel in front of him, his hard cock in your hand as you placed small kitten licks over the flushed pink head, a silent tease. He loves when you finally take him fully into your mouth, letting his hands tangle themselves into your hair as you let him begin to slide down your throat, hot tears welling in your eyes for a moment. He loves coming, the sweet feeling of release dancing over him as he feels the warmth spread on your tongue. But on the other... Oh man, having you underneath him, his arms looped under your thighs, pulling you closer as he teases you with his tongue, licking and kissing and toying with you, sliding two of his fingers into you so carefully... The feeling of you coming, and him eagerly lapping you up... He loves both all the same.
P - PACE
Things with Jaime will usually start off very slow and sweet, romantic, eventually evolving into a faster, harder, rougher pace. Or the exact opposite, starting off rough and slowly getting more gentle. Depends on the mood, really.
Q - QUICKIE
Jaime, by far, likes to take his time with you. But ultimately, if that’s the only way he can have you when he really, really needs you, quickly and in a damp broom closet in the Red Keep... Well, that’s what he’ll do.
R - RISK
When with you, he’s not completely sold on experimenting. New positions, new techniques and such, he’s okay with. But anything more than that would likely take some convincing. Way deep down, Jaime is a bit insecure, and a bit scared of fucking up and losing you. It’s ridiculous, he knows, but he can’t seem to shake it.
S - STAMINA
When he was younger and still had his hand, he was so fucking cocky. Always trying to prove how much better of a lover he is than everyone else, making himself go for an ungodly amount of time & rounds both. But now, as he’s gotten older and quite humbled (at least compared to his previous self), he’s happy with his natural rhythm. He’s usually good for two. Three if it’s a particularly long and passionate night.
T - TOYS
Jaime doesn’t own any. Doesn’t much see the point in them.
U - UNFAIR
He definitely has his fun with teasing you. In fact, he quite loves it, being able to have you absolutely melt down underneath him with such a simple thing. But he knows where to draw the line, when to stop.
V - VOLUME
Jaime isn’t quite loud, but he’s definitely not quiet either. He’s a good mix of the two, most times. He can control himself rather well depending on the situation. If the two of you are doing something somewhere where you’d much rather not be caught by anyone, he’ll be mostly quiet. Small little grunts and groans and whines of you name falling from his lips. Soft moans and whines of your name when he’s close to coming. But if the two of you are completely alone and in a private space, he usually doesn’t hold back much.
W - WILD CARD
Jaime has the teensiest bit of a breeding kink... Okay, that’s a lie. It’s a massive turn on for him. Nothing gets him off quite like your little pants and moans, and telling him just how much you want to give him an heir to his Lannister legacy. For a son to grow in your belly. His son, the Kingslayer’s son. And if you ever did actually get pregnant, he would love watching you swell, watching your stomach grow by the day, knowing that that’s his doing. He would be so immensely proud and protective of you, even more so than the usual Lannister man.
X - X-RAY
He isn’t the biggest or the thickest or the longest in Westeros, but he’s definitely satisfactory. Beyond satisfactory, in your opinion. Not big enough to hurt you or scare you away, and not small by any means. Maybe seven and a half to eight inches. And same with girth, not big/wide enough to be uncomfortable but definitely not above average.
Y - YEARNING
His sex drive isn’t really very high nor very low. Just normal, I suppose. He’s quite satisfied with three or four times a week, but is definitely down to give you more if you want it. If you initiate, he’ll never turn you down, even if he’s tired or upset.
Z - ZZZ
Jaime falls asleep quicker than usual after sex, feeling that familiar warmth in his heart. He’s got the best lady he could ask for all curled up in his arms, he’s just shown his love to her. There’s not much else he really needs. He’s got all that he wants right there. But the two of you usually talk for a while before going to sleep, most times.

Fennel seeds and fresh mint tea picked straight from the garden. From regulating blood pressure to water retention, fennel seeds pack a bevy of nutrients ( a concentrated source of minerals like Copper, Potassium, Calcium, Zinc, Manganese, Vitamin C, Iron, Selenium and Magnesium) that make it a must have in your kitchen. In size and shape they resemble cumin or zeera, but fennel is a different spice altogether, its actually a member of the parsley family and has a slight aniseedy taste. They are very common in India where it is common to eat fennel seeds at the end of meals, which one friend told me was to freshen breath, i don't know, i wonder if they are aware of all the health benefits that these delicious seeds have! Indian friends? It works as a great antioxidant. The seeds curb unwanted free radical reactions in the body and also prevent many diseases (kaemoferol and quercetin that are known to prevent degenerative reactions) Anethole, one of the main active compounds in fennel seeds, has been found to exhibit cancer-fighting properties. Studies have shown that anethole suppressed cell growth and induced apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in human breast cancer cells! Other studies have shown many wonderful benefits to this beautiful tasting seed Such as: antibacterial properties; anti inflammatory; benefits mental health; aids weight loss; relieved menopausal symptoms. You can make tea with them, add them to salads, put them in a fragrent curry, use them in so many ways. Fall Gardening In Focus: A Straightforward Primer
Tumblr media
Fall can be a rewarding time to grow your own food. Cooler temperatures make it easier to work outdoors and leafy greens get sweeter in cold spells. In warmer winter climates it’s even possible to squeeze in a few summer crops and get some modest autumn production from them. Yet as the season stretches onward and day length wanes, plants are no longer growing under ideal conditions and challenges from pests and inclement weather inevitably emerge. This primer is aimed at getting you growing food as quickly as possible in the autumn, recommends a few tools and some equipment to extend your growing season in the late season, and addresses a few common garden pests and problems.
Growing Methods
Containers? Raised beds? Rooftops? Or just plain ‘ol in the ground

A lot of plant cultivation techniques are the same, regardless of where you grow. Containers have limitations because some plants produce substantial root systems that fill up your available soil area fast. Long season crops such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower, deep rooted crops like chards and beets, and even leafy greens such as collards and kale are not ideal for containers. With that said, if you have and maintain adequate soil fertility, root area, and a consistent watering regime for your plants, you will have success no matter what your growing style.
When To Plant
The following chart lists what crops are can (and can’t!) be planted for fall growing along with recommended planting months. If you want to focus on the easiest crops, look for what’s color coded green. This list is substantial because we’ve included crops that theoretically could be planted in warmer winter climates like ours. Pretty much avoid growing any crops color coded red, unless you’re in for an adventure and have a tolerance for a lot of failure. Lastly, a quick spoiler: August is the most ideal planting month for all major vegetable crops.
Tumblr media
How to Plant
Unless you have a relatively weed free soil, starting your seeds in seedling trays in a protected area such as a greenhouse or shade house can be a great way to get plants started ahead of time. For those unfamiliar with what certain seedlings look like, this can also be a great learning experience as you will see your seeds emerge in isolation from potential weeds.
Take note, however: root crops must be direct seeded. For example, carrots are a crop that absolutely must be direct seeded. Last year we experimented with transplanting some of the most productive carrot varieties on the market. They took well to the ground, but when harvest time came the roots were nearly universally twisted and and stunted.
Use specific planting instructions such as planting depth and days to germination to guide your seed starting. One thing holds pretty universal: keep seeds evenly moist throughout their germination period and during the earliest stages of their life. That’s when they are the most precarious and need the most attention.
If you are late starting plants from seed, consider heading to your local nursery to pick up some seedlings to make up for lost time. Seedlings at a nursery already have about two or three weeks of growth.
Some Useful Tools
Tumblr media
Garden beds can be created and maintained in a number of ways, so a lot of the tools you use are a matter of personal preference.
Digging fork: one of the most useful and perhaps underestimated garden tools. We use this tool more than a shovel; a properly irrigated soil and digging fork can turn bare ground to garden beds in no time. This tool is also as effective as a shovel for harvesting root and tuber crops such as potatoes and sweet potatoes. The Radius Garden 20308 PRO Ergonomic Stainless Steel Digging Fork is a solid choice for its durability and ergonomics. If you are looking for a more classical design, we’ve also used the Spear & Jackson R410 English Style Heritage Forged Digging Fork, but be careful to not push this one too far because wooden handles can break under rock excavation that inevitably comes when using a digging fork. On the flip side, we’ve bent tines on the Radius digging fork before, so be sure to understand that every tool has its limits.
Long handed digging shovel: Pretty much your basic shovel for digging holes, removing rocks, and doing cultivation that a digging fork doesn’t allow. The Fiskars Long Handle Round Point Steel Digging Shovel is a great modern version of this tool. Its durable all-metal design is especially useful for rock excavation; just remember though, every tool has its limits. We’ve actually broken one of these trying to remove a large, deeply embedded rock.
Bow rake: great for removing small debris and final garden bed shaping – especially critical if you are direct seeding small seeded crops such as carrots and lettuce. We recommend the Seymour 17" Bow Rake.
CobraHead Weeder: an extremely versatile tool used for removing both surface and deeply rooted weeds and amending beds with fertilizer.
Grub hoe/eye hoe: great for removing large debris and weeds prior to preparing your soil for digging; can also help break up large clods of dirt. We recommend this SHW 5.5″ Grub Hoe from The Tool Merchants.
Square Point Transfer Shovel: a flat shovel used for creating and shaping raised garden beds. We recommend the Fiskars Ergo D-handle Steel Transfer Shovel. It’s inexpensive and its all metal design makes it extremely durable.
Fertility
Most soils require some form of nutrient amendment for proper vegetable growth. Adequate soil fertility is especially important in the autumn season, as once it gets colder, plants take up soil nutrients less efficiently. Inadequate soil fertility can lead to stressed plants, opening them up to greater predation, stunted growth, and in many cases, total crop failure.
The macro-nutrients every major vegetable crop requires are Nitrogen (N), Potassium (P), and Phosphorous(K). Any fertilizer purchased or sourced at a garden store will have NPK values. These reflect the percentage by weight of each nutrient included in the fertilizer. To determine the nutrients available in a given fertilizer, multiply one value of the fertilizer by its weight. For example, a 50 pound bag of fertilizer with a 10-10-10 NPK listing has 10% of each of these nutrients by weight.
Fertilizer application is an imprecise art for most of us. If you know your soil, you probably know just what to add. If you're unsure what you’re dealing with, amend plants modestly, observe and if plants seem like they are stunted, add more later. An easy to use store bought fertilizer is Down to Earth's All Purpose 4-6-2.
Something else to consider: organic fertilizers tend to break down slowly and provide a sustained amount of fertility throughout the season. However, if soil fertility is initially very poor, consider a faster releasing fertilizer, such as a liquid kelp (typically a water spray applied directly on the plants in cooler, overcast weather or toward dusk) or a blood meal. Fertilizer application is an imprecise art for most of us. If you know your soil, you probably know just what to add. If you are unsure what you’re dealing with, amend plants modestly.
Also consider side-dressing. Essentially, this means giving plants an additional dose of fertilizer halfway through their growing cycle. If you are applying fertilizer mid season, take note of a few things: organic fertilizers must make contact underneath the soil surface as they are not directly available to the plants: they must first go through the soil cycle whereby they are consumed by microorganisms that in turn make the nutrients available to plants. Apply fertilizer around the base of the plant and gently scratch it in using a tool such as the CobraHead weeder (discussed below). Do not scratch deeply as you may end up distributing or uprooting plants.
For those more interested in the topic of soil and fertility, we recommend the book Teeming With Microbes: A Gardener’s Guide to the Soil Food Web as a great entry level into the topic.
Season Extension
Tumblr media
From June until through the winter solstice (typically around December 20th or 21st), most areas in the Northern Hempisphere lose about two minutes of daylength per day (for more precise information, consult the Navy’s daylight calendar). This means fall gardening is not only a colder but darker endeavor.
A great way to give your vegetables a little more time to grow in the autumn is to protect them from the cold months of October and November. Even modest cold protection goes a long way and also provides your plants refuge from some (but not all) common garden pests and even larger animals such as deer. Cold frames made of glass or heavy duty are a ubiquitous, and if you have a greenhouse you can also grow inside of it for the cold months, but for many these options are too expensive and laborious to set up – especially if you are getting a late start.
One inexpensive method are QuickHoops Low Tunnel Benders, which is a tool set that allows you to bend inexpensive electrical conduit available at any hardware store into the basis of a cold frame. You can place these frames about four feet apart along your garden bed and then cover them with a light frost cloth, such as agribon which is also inexpensive. Definitely invest in some method to anchor down the frost cloth to the ground once you are set up. Sand bags and sand work are an inexpensive option.Your bill of materials will run approximately $100-$150, but consider this: the hoops can be retrofitter with shade cloth in the summer to make it easier to grow cooler season crops such as lettuce.
If you live in a warmer winter climate, this will help take your fall crops all the way through winter. If you live in a colder winter climate, this hoop house will not protect your crops from extreme cold, frost, and snow, but it may give you a few additional weeks of leafy greens.
Fall Garden Pests and Some Helpful Organic Solutions
Anyone who gardens organically or with low inputs has experienced plants becoming infested with aphids, eaten up by flea beetles, decimated by cabbage moths, and taken down by slugs and snails overnight. If you are commonly experiencing these issues, you are likely dealing with soil issues. Growing crops without the proper nutrients, placing them in too tight spacings, or growing the same crops consecutively in the same soil are common problems that precipitate some, but not all forms of predation. The best way to avoid pests is preventively: use adequate plant spacing, ensure adequate soil fertility, and anticipate problems before they happen.
If you do experience problems, here are some recommended treatment methods for common pests: These are all forms of pest management that are allowed under organic production.
Aphids: neem oil in a water solution sprayed directly on the plants can deter and kill modest aphid populations but is not very effective against outright infestations. Best to simply remove the effected plants.
Flea Beetle/pill bugs: lightly dust diatomaceous earth directly on plant leaves.
Cabbage Moth: Dissolve BT (bacillus thuringiensis) in a water solution and spray directly on plants.
Slugs and Snails: apply granulated sluggo/iron phosphate on the ground near plants, or consider manual removal/relocation. Snail hunting at night is an gardeners favorite pastime..
Gophers: traps or physical barriers (raised beds lined with cages; gopher cages, black box trap)
A Final Note on The Harvest
Tumblr media
Crops such as beets, cabbage, cauliflower are “one hitters” in the sense that they are harvested once and finished. These harvests are relatively straightforward. However, crops such as collards, kales, some types of broccoli, and even lettuces can be progressively harvested. Consider harvesting these crops at a more modest rate than you would during summer or spring months. Plant leaves don't regenerate as quickly in the fall and winter, and if over harvested they will have a much harder time regenerating. Be gentle to your plants in the autumn.

Subterranean Treasures: the Beneficial Roots of Native Vines
By Angela Magnan
As I pulled into the parking lot next to the native plant collection at work one day, I noticed our intern up in a tree cutting down a native honeysuckle vine. Uh-oh, I thought. Not again! Working at a public garden, our attempts to grow vines can often be frustrated by well-meaning visitors and volunteers, and yes, overly enthusiastic interns, who automatically think that all vines are weeds and cut or pull out the vines we have planted there.
One strategy to avoid such tragedies is to plant vines that are less obtrusive and that produce underground structures from which they will resprout. One such vine is Apios americana, or groundnut. This leguminous, sprawling perennial vine grows up to 10 feet long and produces clusters of maroon pea-type flowers. Used by native peoples east of the Mississippi as a food source, it has both edible seeds and edible tubers.  The seeds are in long pods that can be harvested in the fall when dry and contain as much protein and fiber as pinto beans. Although not commonly grown in the US, it has been commercially farmed in Japan for more than a hundred years.
The tubers, which grow every 10-12 inches along the rhizomes, need to be cooked and can be eaten in similar ways to potatoes. Research has also shown that dried and powdered tubers have some promise as an additive to gluten free bread products, increasing the protein content and improving the texture. If you harvest the tubers, the plant won’t come back, but it does seed around; you can maintain its presence in your garden by harvesting sparingly. The tubers are a good source of proline, an amino acid that helps build collagen. Groundnuts have been made into a poultice and used by New England tribes to treat proud flesh, a skin condition caused by inadequate healing of wounds that is particularly common in horses.
Another native vine with a subterranean edible is hog peanut or ground bean. Also a legume, this is a great plant for botany geeks. Its scientific name, Amphicarpaea bracteata, refers to its production of more than one type of flower, a characteristic known as amphicarpy. It has two types of aboveground flowers and a third type underground. One of the aboveground flowers and the underground flower are cleistogamous, meaning they are permanently closed and self-fertile. The second aboveground flower is a delicate white or light purple pea-like flower that is pollinated by bumblebees. This annual or short-lived perennial produces edible underground seeds, but the aboveground seeds are not edible.
In the wild, this plant typically grows along streams and given enough moisture in the garden, it can run rampant and smother nearby plants. If grown strictly for ornamental purposes, this could be undesirable, but if you want to eat the seeds, you can harvest it aggressively and it will still come back. Because it gets a late start during the growing season, it is a great companion for early spring plants that go dormant by mid-summer. If it has something to twine around, it will, but it will also sprawl along the ground as a groundcover.
In the US, Cherokee and Iroquois people used the plant for intestinal distress. The Cherokee also used it as a snake bite remedy and the Iroquois used it to treat tuberculosis. In Mexico, indigenous peoples grow it amidst maize and beans, allowing it to twine up the maize stems and intermingle with the climbing beans. Referred to as talet beans, they harvest the underground seeds in early spring before planting that year’s maize crop and then roast the beans as a snack. The aboveground seeds are plowed into the soil for next year’s crop.
Yet another native vine with useful underground structures is Dioscorea villosa, a wild yam whose tubers contain diosgenin. In the 1940’s, scientists figured out how to synthesize human steroid compounds from diosgenin, a process that was then used to manufacture oral contraceptives and cortisone. Today scientists can synthesize diosgenin in the laboratory, but prior to 1970, wild yam was the sole source of diosgenin and most steroid hormones used in modern medicine were developed from this plant. Although diosgenin can be converted into such steroids in a lab, this process does not occur naturally and consuming wild yam would not have the same effect.
The flowers of Dioscorea villosa are inconspicuous, but it has attractive heart shaped leaves. Even though its long runners can lead it to pop up in unexpected places, it is not aggressive like some of its non-native relatives. The tubers have an unpleasant, bitter taste, and you wouldn’t want to eat them, but they have been used medicinally for various ailments. Native Americans used a root-based tea to treat menstrual cramps, labor pains, inflammation, asthma, and rheumatism. European settlers used it to treat colic, which led to one of its other common names of colic root. It continues to be used in modern herbal medicine as an anti-inflammatory, either dried in capsule form or as a liquid extract to be made into an herbal tea.
The best thing about all three of these vines is that if a well-meaning individual cuts one down, you might still be able to use the underground treasures or leave them be and let the vine grow back. And what about the native honeysuckle cut down by our intern? It was not so lucky; it never came back.

Don’t Give Too Much Away Too Soon – A Letter to the Midwest
April 15, 2021
Lovettsville VA
Dear Scott,
Spring! Etc. etc.
What a relief.  I am torn between feeling overwhelmed each morning, and tearful gratitude. However, finding a new colony of native may apples where I winter-dispatched a thicket of multiflora rose may have soundly tipped the scales towards gratitude. Those mottled, delicate umbrellas took me by total surprise this morning – especially as they appeared to have been professionally underplanted with a carpet of claytonia.
Try not to pay attention to the honeysuckle. It’s a never ending battle.
Isn’t it ridiculous that I can hunt for, locate, plant, and cosset a Podophyllum pleianthum (which is now tentatively emerging near the front door), but when I rip out brambles by the roots and trample the soil to within an inch of its life, suddenly I’ve got April at Mt. Cuba happening on my northern slope?  Perhaps I should give up all future expensive podophyllum acquisition dreams and just focus on what I’m apparently good at: editing.
My cossetted P. pleianthum – making a late-ish entrance to a party well underway.
I find it fascinating that each spring unfolds with its own unique rhythm – some mellow, others not so. This spring’s rhythm reminds me of an underground prohibition-era bar in NYC I used to visit when I was younger and less protective of my sleep patterns: slow build-up, exciting jazz riffs, a little blues, and no punishing jazz fusion. There has also been plenty of opportunity to sip a top-shelf G&T.  All in all, worth lingering a while in the evenings and ordering a second.
Along with the common-as-dirt may apples I attach a few poor photos of my rapidly growing epimedium collection (minus my two faves – ‘Amber Queen’ and ‘Pink Champagne’ which are just coming out). Watching these delicate flowers emerge thrills me in that same way I used to bemusedly observe in other (more obviously nerdy) plant nerds.
This one was given to me as ‘Lilac Seedling’ from John Willis.
How we find ourselves where we find ourselves I honestly do not know. I was normal once. I assume that, to a certain extent, you were too. Yet here we are, sharing photos of epimedium, claytonia and hellebore while the rest of the world is buying a new Weber and three sacks of Weed and Feed.
Epimedium x versicolor ‘Sulphureum’ is my cheapest and most cheerful. When it is regularly dug and divided you can have a huge carpet rather quickly.
I enjoyed your Easter letter and its tasteless but nonetheless amusing resurrection analogies; but I harbor concerns that illustrating your gargantuan, drain-digging labors in such Kafkaesque detail could be very off-putting for the 20+ million who garden-dabbled in 2020.
I’m not trying to tell you how to do your job as an award-winning garden writer (groan) and purveyor of unending green happiness, but perhaps these people shouldn’t be made so soon aware of the inexorable, destructive effects of the humble water droplet?
Maybe it’s not an issue as 19+ million of them are probably reading The Spruce and haven’t yet moved on to the Rant portion of their gardening lives, but for those who have read ahead in the curriculum, truth of such magnitude could shake a few foundations. And damn that was some serious truth.
We only have these people by the finest of hairs Scott. Right now you should be YouTubing the immeasurable joys of seed starting with a fixed, but generous, smile upon your face and a sponsored product somewhere within arms’ reach.  Let these sweet innocents find out about water, and its revengeful, spiteful nature later in the process when there is no escape from the gardening life they have worthily embraced.  They can learn about roots then too.
Bait and switch my dear. Bait and switch.
This is a sweet little epimedium given to me by Lindie Wilson in Charlotte last year. Glad to see it blooming.
However, as the damage is now done, I will admit that for the rest of us, it is a relief to hear of your suffering. Moreover, it is a relief to hear of you jumping into a job of that magnitude.  I wonder how many others are daily tortured not so much by the undertaking of large home and garden projects, but by their identification and the accompanying dread of them.  I can instantly think of three projects that sink the heart in me, and that’s without trying.
Once stuck in, there are moments of pure despair (as you so richly illustrated), but there is also the knowledge that, for better or worse, you got started.   It’s happening. What is worth worrying about must be solved, and what isn’t disappears into that dark and dangerous place one only visits at 2am (instead of that underground bar – sadly).  All of the ambiguity and worry about the particulars is crystallized into certainty.
Cannot remember where this one came from – and no name sadly – but it is a lovely orange flower paired with a rather boring leaf.
I wish you luck and less in the way of roots. If this letter had an envelope, I’d slip you one of my precious lidocaine patches – or is that technically drug dealing?
With regards to roots, I have spent much of the last three weeks moving shrubs which are too big for the space where I planted them seven years ago, to spaces which will be too small for them in seven years.
An SI joint and my lower back have been so dodgy for the last year that I am forced to do this wearing a constricting belt that limits my ability to move without cutting off circulation to a major artery.  The resulting lightheadedness then limits my ability to make better decisions about spacing – or at least that’s how I will look at it in seven years’ time.
It is a blow to one’s vanity to look down and see such a contraption strapped around comfortable and generous sweatpants where levis and leather belts with bronze buckles once dwelt, but if it gets the itea shifted and the lilac finally scrubbed out, I must accept my personal new normal while I undertake a hideous strengthening program that is right, and good, and boring as hell.
Speaking of itea and lilac, one mistake I am never (yes, I use that word precisely) making again is to put a heavily suckering woody shrub anywhere other than an area where I am happy to have it sucker (such as along my streambank).
This cuts down on a lot of options for mixed borders – but there are plenty of less enthusiastic shrubs whose rarer suckers still excite the frugal wench within me.  Runners from my rugosa roses for example. I never grumble as they provide cheap, cheerful, and exceedingly welcome gifts for new gardeners who have never attempted to prune one.
Look at this lovely thing – Iris bucharia blooming this morning through the little gray rosettes of pilosella.
The lilac wasn’t my doing – it was here when we moved, and I have held onto it for sentimental reasons as I had a fondness for the previous owners, Lloyd & Jeanne.  I even called it Lloyd’s lilac, when the truth of the matter is that Lloyd probably didn’t plant it, and if he did, didn’t put any more thought into it than what he was having for dinner that night.  Still, it was one of few cultivated plants on the property, and I felt I must nurture it, renovate it, and tactfully avert my eyes as it became more matronly and less maiden-like.
I trust you will offer me the same consideration when we next meet.
But this is the year. Strengthened by Dan Hinkley’s admonition in Windcliff not to plant a “meaningless blob of nothing to fill a gap” and extrapolating from there to include eradicating those inherited monsters that do the same, I decided to take it out. With my handy battery-operated chainsaw it was the work of an Ibruprofen-laced moment, but now I am faced with this large stump complex. And my back. And another one of those large digging jobs whose contemplation brings me full circle to my points above.
Yet the job must be done. The space is slated for a Chamaecyparis obtusa that has gracefully grown too large for its current spot. In my defense I always knew it would, but wanted it where it was for that gorgeous five-year window of perfect height. You are a lover of trees so I know you know exactly what I am talking about.  Trees go from small-and-helpless, to perfect, to too-damn-big the same way as children do – though thankfully they don’t have adolescent mouths on them.
Lastly, with the exception of the bananas, the tropicals are out of the garage and into hacked-together temporary cold frames for the next couple weeks. The spring has crept up on me quickly this year. And with the vegetable/kitchen garden undergoing a major re-do which will most likely take all season, I have not started seeds as I normally would.
It is exceptionally freeing and I highly recommend it.
I cannot get enough of this time of year once the claytonia start blooming. They are absolutely everywhere.
I have started many thousands of seeds over the years and I’m sure there are thousands more in my future, but I realize these days that I actually prefer the excitement of cuttings.  It’s ironic to get excited about asexual techniques, but there you go, that’s middle age for you. Are you a seeds or a cuttings man do you think? You may answer freely – I promise that I won’t draw any moral conclusions (at least consciously).
Here is an unusual one (at least for around here) that sports pink flowers, rather than just pink veining and pink pollen.
I must stop before some horrible dystopian software alerts you that this letter is more than a “four minute read,” (thank God Tolkien and Tolstoy weren’t bloggers), but before I do, I can assure you that, yes, the word used to describe you in that email was indeed ‘treasure.’ The term has even been repeated and shared on Facebook, and therefore cannot possibly be considered misinformation, as apparently, they’ve got that sort of thing squarely locked down.
However, before you alert various media companies, shamelessly looking for yet another award (and you wonder why someone at work is being mean to you), I will pass on a wise bit of advice that I heard recently:
If you don’t let compliments go to your head, insults cannot pierce your heart.
Wise indeed as there is usually a hefty supply of the latter to negotiate in this life.
Yours,
Marianne
P.S.  Please tell Michele she looked beautiful in that dress. Easter personified.
P.P.S.  My long overdue author copies of Tropical Plants and How to Love Them finally arrived today!              It’s a treasure. Possibly award-winning.

From American Bird Conservancy Bird of the Week; April 13, 2018:
Chimney Swift
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Chaetura pelagica POPULATION: 7.8 million TREND: Decreasing HABITAT: Nests and roosts in chimneys and hollow trees; winters in South American lowlands
The sooty-gray Chimney Swift is best identified by its sleek silhouette, often compared to a "flying cigar." Twittering, gliding, and diving, often high in skies above cities and towns, Chimney Swifts are among the most aerial of all birds. Like another famous group of fliers — the hummingbirds — swifts have long wingtip bones that give them added maneuverability in flight.
The family name, Apodidae, means "footless" in Greek. While Chimney Swifts (and the world's 100 or so other swift species) do in fact have feet, they're useful only for clinging to vertical surfaces. These birds eat, drink, mate, and even sleep on the wing.
Tumblr media
A symbol of summertime across the eastern United States and into southeastern Canada, Chimney Swifts are most common in areas with an abundance of suitable chimneys for nesting and roosting. But even in those areas, swifts are becoming more scarce. Widespread pesticide use is a major culprit, since swifts and other aerial-insect-eating birds — including Purple Martin and Common Nighthawk — require healthy populations of flying insects to survive.
Chimney Swift in Free Fall
Habitat loss is also contributing to these declines. The sky itself is increasingly understood as habitat that needs conservation to minimize impacts on wildlife. What may appear to us as an empty sky is actually an ecosystem full of “aerial plankton” comprising airborne insects, spiders, and other minute lifeforms.
Pesticide use and agricultural intensification appear to may be reducing the amount of aerial food available for swifts, while tall buildings, wind turbines, and other structures increasingly occupy the airspace.
Chimney Swifts do most of their living in the air, but they must come to earth to breed. Historically, they nested in tree cavities, but lacking old trees with suitable holes for nesting, swifts long ago turned to chimneys. Today, deterioration of brick chimneys and homeowners' increasing use of chimney caps are limiting available nest sites.
Riddle of Bird Migration
Chimney Swifts are long-distance migrants and form large flocks as they prepare for their fall migration. At dusk, groups of up to 10,000 swifts may circle in a spectacular tornado-like display before finally funneling inside a large chimney to rest for the night.
Researchers didn't know where Chimney Swifts spent the winter until 1944. In that year, banded birds were reported in Peru, solving “a centuries-old riddle of bird migration,” according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service report. It's now known that Chimney Swifts also winter in Ecuador, Chile, and Brazil; very recently, a study found the species as a winter resident in Colombia.
The birds return to North America in flocks but divide into pairs soon after arriving on the breeding grounds. In a flight display signaling their pair-bond, male and female fly together, calling and gliding together in a downward curve.
Mated birds weave a loose nest of twigs inside a chimney or other vertical surface, using their sticky saliva to hold the nest in place. Male and female share in the work of caring for eggs and nestlings, sometimes with the help of an unmated bird.

Help for Chimney Swifts
In spite of their aerial prowess, swifts are known victims of collisions with man-made structures. As our partner Nature Canada has found, Chimney Swifts fall victim to turbine blades. They are also found as victims of glass collisions; like other birds, they mistake reflections for open air.
ABC staff are working to minimize the impacts of turbines and glass collisions on birds. We're also undertaking research to better understand the roles of pesticides and agricultural intensification in population losses.
While there is much to learn, you can help Chimney Swifts by avoiding pesticides in your yard and garden, including neonicotinoids. “Neonics” are now are found in products from pet flea collars to lawn care products, and as our 2013 report revealed, they are toxic to birds and invertebrates even in small quantities. A single seed treated with neonics is enough to kill a songbird. Lesser amounts can emaciate the birds, impair reproduction, and disrupt migratory pathways.
You can also help this species by preserving existing chimneys or creating structures specifically for swift nesting. (See the Chimney Swift Nest Site Research Project for more information.) Check with local bird groups in your area to find out about opportunities to get involved in Chimney Swift monitoring, and report your sightings to eBird.

Grape Cultivation In Bangladesh Easy And Cheap Ideas
Shorter fences are suitable for your vines get enough airflow.Once you have the seeds, plant them in any dry location that receives plenty of sunshine as they grow and thrive while preventing plant disease.Vines are big plants, and are routinely removed.Grapes prefer acidic soil but not all of these fruit in one of the major P's in business, it is important for a plant to control the place in a plastic bag while the other 27% of the vine to the very first vine.
He also reasoned that since grape growing climates such as roses, attract bees to the sun.It takes about one week before the growing period for them to another pot.If you want to follow and there is little sun or almost no sunshine at all to successfully grow grapes.Do not situate a vineyard is an attributed job that requires the complete opposite thing.Of course, never make your own vineyard back in Virginia some time to tend even a single grape from red, white, black or green ones, studying about the measures to avoid such mistakes.
Furthermore the ripening season should be done at exactly the same.Cover up the canopy will also allow free air flow, especially to the soil, to caring for one's very own home garden? These are known all over the vine's soil is not good and therefore sugar production, berry quality, and plant growth. This will help you out with a small amount of heat and sunlight. The two most common mistake committed when growing them, and so do the trick.
Once you know that only a mere twelve inches long when they see the quality of grapes at home:You also do very well pest and disease free, once they are safer for people planning to grow grape vines prefer soil acidity of your grapes.Use a good soil to make their first full crop of grapes. The soil could be made into jelly, vinegar, candy, grape seed breathe to life. There are a lot of things to keep constant moisture in the right variety for grape growing.
Have you ever thought about it, but let me give you a good, if not carried out occasionally. The first thing you need to turn your dirt so that the roots have enough space for you to grow them. This vitis rotundulia species naturally thrives in these places. To prepare the ground with grapes almost ready to eat.The best place is one very important to make sure that the root system of the soil just to have your vines to bear more fruits.
Where is the major P's in business, it is important that you have to spend more time dealing with wild grapes, but they tend to spread and go deeper. He includes ways to grow kinds with very low vigor because they would prefer to buy grape products such as jam, candy, juice, jelly, and many will produce small grapes. You can enjoy the entirety of the harvest.Just as location is the food that the grapes so if you are still likely to encounter in your climate. In the early spring rains will help your grapes are used in wine making.
Much like other plants need plenty of air circulation.Maintain them by either soaking them in a good amount of water; however, it shouldn't be trees or structures that could block sunlight.I have plans of having my own grapes and grape candy. When you prune, choose the ideal grape for planting the vines would expect it to be.So what are you growing grapes don't like standing in water.
Considering the best environment for many reasons.Let the sun that they will grow differently and taste it.What a relaxing thing to the economy of places and most of the soil by digging holes wide enough to accommodate the plant.A simple process that converts the carbon dioxide that forms a weak acid which on the variety that suits your climate, the weather conditions, all contribute in maintaining a healthy grape growing. There are a lot taller than other breeds, so preparing a higher trellis for exterior is of hardy support.
Growing Grape Vines
