My position on Fan Fiction/ Fan-Make
I've been goaded into actually formulating a policy about this, due to actually finding fan fiction of my work. This is a good problem to have! My policy, here goes -
I firmly believe that fan-creations are a sign of health for any artistic property. I am always flattered when people want to spend extra time in my world and with my characters. There are a few pitfalls here, however, and authors have different ways of addressing them. Here are mine:
Visual Fan Artwork
I am generally delighted by visual fan art (images, dolls, cross-stitch, sculpture, etc) as long as you state clearly in the description where the world and/or characters came from and you’re not trying to sell it without a license. I enthusiastically share fan art when I find it. You do not need a license from me to make non-commercial, appropriately-attributed visual fan art.
Fan Fiction
Text-based fan fiction is a stickier subject. I am not interested in writing in a shared world. My canon is off-limits until I am dead. When my work is in the public domain, knock yourselves out!
Legally, best-practice is for me to pretend not to see fan fiction. I admit that I don’t always do this. However, I am nervous about interacting with fan fiction or linking to it because it is a legal mine-field. I do not want to lose control of my copyrights. (That is my main fear – not that you’ll make money on my work, but that I will lose control of my copyrights.)
Bottom line: if you want me to feel really free to interact with your fan fic and share it with my audience, you need to get a license from me. That license will give you legal permission to create “derivative works.” The license will also say that anything I create that is influenced by your fan fiction is mine alone and I do not owe you money or credit for any ideals that may pop up in my own canon creations due to reading your fan fiction.
If you obtain such a license from me, you are street-legal. This said, I do not promise to read fan fiction, even if you license it. I do not promise to critique it or give writing advice. Fan fiction is a gift to other fans, not to me.
Monetized Fan Creations (here’s where I really differ from other authors)
I am quite tolerant of fans making money in my world as long as you get a license from me first. I’m probably not going to give you a license for text-based stories to be published on retailers. Those have potential to confuse my readers. However, I will happily give you a license for many other kinds of monetized fan creations, including text-based stories in some forms. Unless you are a company, I’m probably not going to ask you for royalties. You can keep whatever you make, and I will happily link your work to my audience.
Examples:
You can sell commissioned artwork of my characters to other fans.
You can sell artwork of my characters printed on merch in places like Red Bubble (t-shirts, mugs, calendars, mousepads, etc).
You can make monetized pod-fic as long as it’s not on retailers and it’s clearly labeled as a non-canon fan-creation.
You can share your stories or art of my world and characters behind a paywall or on a site with advertising as long as it’s properly labeled and my own content is linked.
You can make a game based on my world. (If you are a company or a large kick-starter-backed endeavor, I will ask for royalties, but I’ll be reasonable).
You can make a D&D manual (OMG, please make a D&D manual. I get so many requests for this. I have no interested in making a D&D manual, but I will share yours and you can keep all the money…unless you are a gaming company or a large endeavor with backers, in which case I will want royalties, but I will be reasonable.)
The things you can do are practically limitless. I don’t have time to pursue all the good ideas myself! I just ask that you get a license from me first and link your source material (my books). Email me: [email protected]

Fanfiction and Profit
Hello loves~ I’ve seen this pop up now and then, about fanfiction and commissions, profit and whether we can pay someone to write the fic we want to read. Unfortunately, I have to be the bearer of bad news:
You absolutely, unequivocally, cannot and should not pay or be paid for fanfiction.
Why not? Well, let’s go over this topic with a look at what fan works are, how we can use them, and where these rules came from.
Why can’t we profit from our hard work? Is this fair?
There are a lot of reasons, and I want to start off with saying this is not about whether it is fair or right, it is a simple statement of the rules by which our hobby, our passion, is permitted to live and thrive. The law does not consider fanfiction to be transformative enough to be legal to profit from, and you will find that AO3 itself explicitly does not allow payment, commissions, or any direct payment sites to be linked on the platform.
I’ll say that one again - it is fully against AO3’s Terms and Conditions to advertise any paid work on the website. You will be warned by moderators if you’re found doing this, and may risk entirely losing your account.
It’s essentially legally complex. The only reason we are allowed to write and share fanfiction at all is because it is non profit. We can’t be sued for making money from someone else’s intellectual properties if we’re not making any money from it.
Why are fan art, songs, and other mediums allowed to profit when we can’t?
This is another piece of nuance for you, which not everyone will agree with. Art is considered to be more transformative, and is generally viewed differently as a medium.
But I will also say here we can look at it purely from a business angle, the legal side that the IP rights holder will be viewing it from too: Fan art can often attract people in to a fandom, to find out who this interesting character is or what the source of the art was. It adds profit to the original creator by bringing new fans to the table.
Fanfiction, on the other hand, is almost exclusively read by people who have already consumed the original media and are looking for new stories. I would argue it is exceptionally rare for someone to read fic before they’ve engaged with the source material. Fic often relies on the reader knowing the characters and stories already, so we can shorthand the exposition and everyone understands what’s going on and why.
When did this become the rule?
The “Elders” of fanfiction will give you a thousand yard stare with this one, because it largely comes back to JRR Tolkien’s estate and Anne Rice. Both were very unhappy with fanfiction existing at all, and are the reason why you might well still see disclaimers at the top of some fics mentioning that all characters, worlds, etc belong to the original rights holders and the work is one of fanfiction that the author does not profit from in any way. Tolkien’s estate and Anne Rice both set legal challenges against fanfic writers, threatening the entire hobby and setting legal precedents at the end of it for what we can and cannot do. What we can do? Write transformative works, based on existing IPs, and share them for free with no profit or money exchanged at any point.
But what about exchanges?
You can offer to exchange fic for fic, or swap art and fanfic. This isn’t getting paid because you aren’t profiting from it, but if you want to encourage someone and be encouraged in return, that is a potential way to do it. So an artist might draw a scene, character or pairing that you love, whilst you write a fic for them. It’s swapping a gift for a gift in that way, and although you could assign monetary value to commissioned art, you aren’t actually exchanging money. It might seem like a bit of a loophole, but it is one that rights holders shouldn’t be able to be upset by really. I can’t see myself how a legal challenge could be raised for damages on that basis, so it should be safe. If you’re not an artist yourself but do want to see something specific from a writer, you could offer to commission art on their behalf in exchange for the fic. It’s imperfect, but in the end you’re supporting both an artist and a writer in that exchange, even if the writer is only gaining a product instead of money, as long as they're not selling it on again.
What if I want to commission someone to write something I want to read?
Well, unfortunately, if you want them to write fanfiction, that’s not possible. You may find some writers are willing to take on prompts, though! Tumblr can be a good one for that, as writers sometimes specify that their ask boxes are open for fic prompts that they might consider writing. You can also try approaching a writer who has written in a style you like and as if they would be willing to write a piece based on your idea or pairing, though you should double check what pairings and topics they’re comfortable writing first.
Isn’t there anything I can do with my writing skills?
Plenty of things! You can use fanfiction as a way to warm up into writing skills in general. Get some practice, feedback, and validation to know you’re on the right track. It’s a wonderful low pressure way to get a feel for fiction writing in general and work out what kinds of stories you’d like to tell.
In some cases, you might be able to take a fanfic you have written and rewrite it to become something original - this might need a lot of work in changing enough names and details for it to become removed from the IP that it was initially based on, but this is certainly something people have done in the past. Most famously, 50 Shades of Grey (my opinions of which are astronomically low for so many reasons, but this is not the place for those) began life as a Twilight fanfiction. 
Writing original fiction will always have its own unique challenges, and is a different experience to fic. For one thing, you need to establish your setting and characters because your readers don’t know them yet. Another that many find tough is going through the writing process without any feedback from beta readers or getting kudos from published chapters. Then, of course, publishing is its own beast… But if you want to profit from writing, then you need to either have a paid role as a writer on a specific IP project, or you need to write your own works and look at getting them published (the main 3 options would be self pub, indie publishers, or trad pub - they all have their pros and cons for different things, so it’s something to do proper research on before committing to any one path).
I found someone offering paid fic, what should I do?
I recommend gently warning them. Not everyone is aware of the risks, so giving them a kind heads up is probably the best bet. You can even direct them to this post if you like, to save re-explaining it all. If they don’t listen, then unfortunately you may need to report their account to AO3 so the moderators there can give them a more formal warning that might be taken more seriously. I have no doubt that the AO3 mods will be able to explain it more clearly and concisely than I can, too.
I have taken payment for fic in the past, what should I do?
First, I'm not here to blame you. Not everyone knows the rules or history - that's why I'm here to share the explanation for anyone who didn't know~ But what you need to do now is immediately stop any offers to take commissions for fanfiction. Scrub your AO3 of any links to payment sites, and remove any reference to "commission" or "paid work" in your writing wherever it is shared. Clean everything up so you are safe from any legal repercussions, and you may need to refund any incomplete commissions. Take a look at the other ways you might be able to earn from your writing, or options for exchanges you might be happy with for writing something bespoke for someone else. We can't change what has already been done, but we can move forward when we know better so we can do better.
Conclusion? Where are we with fic and profit?
The bottom line is the same as the top - for the safety of our fandom communities, we must never accept or offer payment for fanfiction. Doing so not only risks the individual author, but the entire community as a whole. We might not agree with it, and that’s not the conversation I’m here to have, but this is the way things are. It’s not something that can be changed, so we should respect the playground we are in and take care not to end up having the whole place torn down. Fanfic writing is a hobby, and one that brings us a whole lot of community, joy, creativity, and a way to extend the love of a franchise far beyond the ending of the canon content. We get to create and play with all kinds of toys in the toybox in whatever ways we like - that’s special, and I feel we should respect and protect that.
So, we’ll end it here - go, have fun writing, build your skills and style, find and delight your readers, just keep in mind everything that got us here and everything in the future that we want to preserve~

this is really the crux of it. in the end, a fanfic is (near universally) an advertisement for a commercial product made for free. the exceptions to this rule are few and far between

What is Bluesky, the fast-growing social platform welcoming fleeing X users?

Disgruntled X users are again flocking to Bluesky, a newer social media platform that grew out of the former Twitter before billionaire Elon Musk took it over in 2022. While it remains small compared to established online spaces such as X, it has emerged as an alternative for those looking for a different mood, lighter and friendlier and less influenced by Musk.
What is Bluesky?
Championed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky was an invitation-only space until it opened to the public in February. That invite-only period gave the site time to build out moderation tools and other features. The platform resembles Musk's X, with a "discover" feed and a chronological feed for accounts that users follow. Users can send direct messages and pin posts, as well as find "starter packs" that provide a curated list of people and custom feeds to follow.
Why is Bluesky growing?
Bluesky said in mid-November that its total users surged to 15 million, up from roughly 13 million at the end of October, as some X users look for an alternative platform to post their thoughts and talk to others online. The post-election uptick in users isn't the first time Bluesky has benefited from people leaving X. The platform gained 2.6 million users in the week after X was banned in Brazil in August—85% of them from Brazil, the company said. About 500,000 new users signed up in one day in October, when X signaled that blocked accounts would be able to see a user's public posts.
Across the platform, new users—among them journalists, left-leaning politicians and celebrities—have posted memes and shared that they were looking forward to using a space free from advertisements and hate speech. Some said it reminded them of the early days of Twitter more than a decade ago.
Despite Bluesky's growth, X posted after the election that it had "dominated the global conversation on the U.S. election" and had set new records.
Beyond social networking
Bluesky, though, has bigger ambitions than to supplant X. Beyond the platform itself, it is building a technical foundation—what it calls "a protocol for public conversation"—that could make social networks work across different platforms—also known as interoperability—like email, blogs or phone numbers.
Currently, you can't cross between social platforms to leave a comment on someone's account. Twitter users must stay on Twitter and TikTok users must stay on TikTok if they want to interact with accounts on those services. Big Tech companies have largely built moats around their online properties, which helps serve their advertising-focused business models.
Bluesky is trying to reimagine all of this and working toward interoperability.

Germany assumes sabotage after Baltic Sea data cable damaged

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday that the damage to an undersea data cable running from Germany to Finland was likely due to sabotage.
The damage to the C-Lion1 cable was first reported on Monday with officials saying the 1,173-kilometer (729-mile) line had been cut, although the impact would probably not be noticeable for most people.
Sweden's Civil Defense Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin also reported on Monday that a second undersea cable had been damaged, according to the French press agency AFP.
The incident occurred in the same maritime region where the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged in 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine earlier that year.
'Can't all just be coincidences'
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Europe would remain united in light of the hybrid threats following the cut in the fiber-optic cables in the Baltic Sea.
"We are now also experiencing this in Germany … with cyber attacks, with the surveillance of critical infrastructure, parcels suddenly exploding when transported on planes and yesterday … a data cable between Finland and Germany which probably also affected Sweden," said Baerbock. "These can't all just be coincidences."
What else did Germany say about the damaged Baltic Sea cable?
"No one believes that these cables were cut accidentally. I also don't want to believe in versions that these were anchors that accidentally caused damage over these cables," Pistorius said before a meeting with EU defense ministers in Brussels.
"Therefore, we have to state, without knowing specifically who it came from, that it is a 'hybrid' action. And we also have to assume, without knowing it yet, that it is sabotage," he added.
While Pistorius was unable to produce any evidence for his suspicions, his Estonian counterpart Hanno Pevkur also said it was not a "natural cause" based on their preliminary information.
A joint statement from the German and Finnish Foreign Ministers on Monday evening said: "Our European security is not only under threat from Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, but also from hybrid warfare by malicious actors."

Findaway Voices has been bought by Spotify and the new acquisition has caused a change in the terms and service for anyone producing audio through Findaway Voices

As you can see here the new ToS is stating that Findaway Voices, is claiming "IRREVOCABLE, royalty free, fully paid, non exclusive, transferrable, sublicensable, worldwide license to produce, make availiable, perform and display, TRANSLATE, MODIFY, CREATE DERIVITIVE WORKS AND DISTRIBUTE any of the user content -> audiobooks and files, through ANY medium, whether alone or in combination with OTHER user works.
IN ANY MANNER OR BY ANY MEANS, METHOD OR TECHNOLOGY WHETHER KNOWN OR HEREAFTER CREATED including PRODUCT MANAGEMENT, IMPROVEMENT, TRAINING, TESTING, MODELING AND IMPLEMENTATION with Spotify [and by extension Findaway Voices]
This terms of service agreement also requires you to WAIVE your rights to object to derrogatory treatment.
Meaning you can't legally, per this new terms of service object to unwillful manipulation or use of your intellectual property by spotify or uts subsidiaries.
This terms of service agreement is intended to take effect on March, 15th, 2024.
What is not included in the screen capture is a continued agreement to arbitration.
If you aren't familiar with arbitration agreements, they are usually stipulations in corporate contracts that require those seeking legal dispute use lawyers and court officials provided by the company being sued in the dispute. This makes it very hard to create a substantial single person lawsuit because of inherently imbalanced court procedures.
Why am i sharing this? Because this TOS message was sent out also stating that by users agreeing to previous TOS, they are *automatically* agreeing to THIS NEW TOS.
Please note the wording of the new contract, Spotify and its subsidiaries are functionally claiming the right to unquestionably manipulate the works of the creators using their distribution platforms for exclusively their own profit— note the royalty free, fully paid.
They are also saying through this wording that they maintain the right/ability to use the works they distribute to train, test, and implement product management, create derifitive works thereof, and distribute translations of the creator's works. WITHOUT COMPENSATION.
I would like to further focus on the verbiage, "testing" and "training", followed by the using of any means current or hereafter created— this is a clause that is functionally saying in legaleze "we want the right to train your works on generative AI and any new technoligy that comes after it too, just in case."
Followed, again, by the wholesale waiving of the creator's moral or equitable rights to dispute the potential misuse of their works without their express permission.
This TOS agreement is sneaky, in two ways.
1. They aren't letting you agree to it manually. They are siting your agreement to their original TOS as an automatic agreement to this newer version.

Well. Bigger creators need a place to go where they're not in the way of smaller creators. YouTube needs to rebrand, because it's not really true to the current intent of the company (which was to provide a space for smaller creators, which most who profit off the platform are not).
Remember Ben Shapiro jumped to YouTube. He is *objectively* not a small creator. Anybody with their own ad agency *isn't*.
Which objectively means, that YouTube doesn't do what it's branded to do.
Unlike Metabook, however, people aren't tied to their social networks on YouTube. Which means there's still room for other small companies to operate and grow. And nobody is tied to Twitter either BTW. They only care about Twitter to see what topics are trending.
Nobody Uses Twitter for social media. only for advertising and trend anal ysis. If they did, there'd be groups of people like we see on Meta. But all we see are groups of associates and clout chasers.
Tik Tok isn't about short form content either, BTW. It's a channel surfing simulator. You use short form content to drive to your long form content. You use Twitter for the same exact reason.
Which means that TikTok and Twitter (I don't say X because it can be confused with too many other brands and properties, and nobody will understand what I'm talking about if I do.) Are competing against each other in *that* regard.
YouTubes shorts are two fold, Child Content, and advertising long form content. But it's not really good as a *channel surfing simulator* unless you're *really* into cartoons.
Instagram is for photographers and models. And anything in *that* space. Like Fastfood Prop shoot makers. (And maybe for recipes)
Which means the only real social media is *still* Facebook where it's about your social circle. And LinkedIn, where it's a place that employers are looking for minimum wage employees to search for employees.
It still counts, even if employers don't use it.
What surprises me, is that these people who spent *all this time* reverse engineering and algorithms, didn't watch as the sites were being built.
