#free furniture for me

Got a new piece of alleyway furniture in need of love/repair yesterday afternoon:

It's the base of a hoosier cabinet in a pretty sad state. The sides are delaminating and at least two of the legs are splitting. And you can see the state of the finish.

Not a valuable antique so I feel no guilt in what I'm going to do to it to give it an alternative function.

It's going to turn into a combination plant stand (that enameled top makes it perfect) and cat bed (in the cabinet part. The drawers, which still work well, will be nice storage. Might see if my seed packet collection will fit or I might put cat toys and brushes in it, who knows?

It's not going to be a professional job for sure. I'll probably just sister some additional supports to the insides of all the legs to fix that issue. Then see about getting some thin plywood or Masonite board to fit into the sides. Remove what little finish remains, sand, and paint/stain.

Probably should either put a little lip on the inside of the cabinet part to keep the cat bed from slipping out. Or I could keep the door shut and just remove the left panel entirely to allow feline access. I'm a little concerned that if I make it too private, however, some little kitty (lookin at you, Princess Many Toes) will start using it as a litterbox.

Anyway, it's not a project I'm going to start until I finish the current garden project since I'd like to get that done before we hit 100F again.

You've always been my go-to for all things Bleach lore and world-building! Do you think Shinigami all sleep in futons or beds? Or maybe it varies from character to character? We've seen the 4th division with beds in their wards, but I think every other character has slept in futons.

I started a list of any time we'd ever seen a character in some kind of bed (futon or frame), but it mostly just ended up being a long list of "_______ at the 4th," lol, so we'll see all those aside (almost all those aside). But canonically, there is a mixture! We see:

The incredible, isolating vastness of the room, and the way the shadow cuts across the space. ToT <33333 It also reminds me of a really excellent meta piece done by afinepiece, where she analyzed the panels from Byakuya's story about Hisana and pointed out sections where the panel visuals might suggest Byakuya's memory/headspace more than physical reality. Her journal is deactivated but I know the reblog is on B3 somewhere! I'm inclined to go with that reading here, even though I also feel like the room probably just *looked like this* because every room in Soul Society is like this. (Maybe it's also for airflow, given her illness seemed partially respiratory and possibly contagious? ngl I'm basing this off that one anime elaboration scene and my co-blogger's post about Circus Hisana and Elephant TB).

In my mind Byakuya's convalescent setup was the same as Hisana's (is this the sad Seireitei equivalent of couples' outfits) but I was wrong:

The tatami floor, layout, and big closet on the right-hand side seem to imply that Hanatarou uses a futon.

This is probably not the only room in this house and they could put *anything* in those cabinets, but their sheer number and the style of the room suggests that this converts to a futon-filled bedroom, regardless of what might exist in other parts of the house.

Is this at the 6th? Is this at the 4th? I always assumed the 6th, though obviously the 4th was involved. Idk, Byakuya left him on the ground. Maybe if you don't pick up your invalids the 4th just stashes them in their jail.

These examples are pretty skewed in favor of futons, but if we think about this collection of characters, there is an overrepresentation of people who trend more traditional in terms of aesthetic, so they might not meaningfully represent the whole. Also, half the list is the same family.

We've seen a number of different offices and meeting rooms for each division, as well as some private residences, which have been a mix of Western and traditional styles in terms of the building itself and the furniture within it. Most of the offices seem to have Western furniture (or at least, the 10th, 6th, and 3rd), whereas Byakuya and Aizen, at least, seem to prefer the traditional at home.

Though, I don't know what this big-ass room is, but given its size and feeling of formal reception, this may well be the 5th's office?

NB 2: The 2nd also has traditional receiving rooms (used by both Yoruichi and Soi Fon, wherever the division between Shihouin and the 2nd is. But I assume Soi Fon's office is not the Shihouin Family Receiving room).

My feeling is that the differences are more regional/Division-based than personal preference-based, and *when*/by whom this design language was established depends on how much time and money the people in charge want to devote to furniture.

But that doesn't necessarily mean each Division is uniform, since we can see Isane and Hanatarou, both seated officers of the 4th, have different-style rooms! Maybe this is an effect of the 4th being an early bed adopter for their general professional purposes. Unohana is 100% a futon lady. I feel like Isane just accepted whatever was originally in the room, and that if there were no bed at all in the room she would sleep on the floor before asking to remodel. Does that mean a previous 4th VC wanted to modernize the VC quarters?

Was that previous 4th VC the original bedframe proselytizer, and got permission from Unohana to do up their quarters like a model home that gave examples of both types of room? Do Isane and Unohana live in an IKEA showroom?

What are the benefits of futons?

Given what a big deal everyone makes out of transporting goods from the Living World, I feel like they probably make all their furniture and don't import particleboard from Nitori, so this would be expensive! Plus, given the amount of building reconstruction that needs to happen, I feel like there's probably a fairly small quota of wood released to civilians and/or divisions for non-essential use.

What are the benefits of bedframes?

Yeah, you'd have to make the bedframes and have a whole separate common room, but having beds implies you've probably done away with the tatami in the room, since you're not really supposed to put heavy furniture on the mats. And I don't think in a barrack with heavy use you'd be able to rely on shinigami simply "being careful." Same logic as college dorms and their "IKEA, but completely indestructible" furniture.

So if you decide in the long-term that you don't want to do tatami maintenance/replacement and want wood furniture on wood floors, maybe the bed route is for you! ("You" here meaning "your division"!) At which point it'd be a matter of:

caring enough to do a cost/benefit analysis about this

whether or not you want to preserve the traditional aesthetic

whether you have the initial capital to invest in making the change

Some additional thoughts:

We know that at least a portion of the 2nd has heated floors, as financed by Oomaeda. I'm not a heated floors aficionado--though I stayed at an AirBnb once with a heated driveway--NUTS) but I feel like that would...not work with tatami? That over time the heat would dry them out too much and make them brittle? So maybe the 2nd has beds.

Despite the fact that the 10th office changes out their couch out a few times during the canon timeline, I feel like there's a 0% chance Hitsugaya has considered a bedding/architecture overhaul during his tenure at the 10th. He's spent the last 15 years developing a real filing system and an actual budget procedure. He didn't come in with extra money to put towards beds and the 46 doesn't generally approve that kind of line item. That's more of a "gift fund" expense.

Shinji is trying to get a Pod Hotel proposal approved, on the grounds that the idea would benefit more than just the 5th. They could implement it in the Tsumesho (Gotei WeWork)! And provide them in strategic outposts across Rukongai!

During what decade was the 11th briefly "HAMMOCK DIVISION" because it seemed like the cheapest, most low-maintenance option?

The fact that there's at least three (and maybe even more) cults in the Philippines that had been claiming to be indigenous groups while not being indigenous at all because they believe that they're the true rulers of the country is absolutely both fascinating and disturbing.

The fact that at least one of these groups blatantly claim indigenous status just so they could claim independence from the government when none of their leaders have any confirmed tribal affiliation too is also really annoying.

so like a couple weeks ago i started writing a dungeon meshi polycule fic (laios touden's adventuring party??? more like chilchuck tims's harem) and then i thought "hey i should really dive into laios's monstersona what if i gave him the ability to comprehend an eldritch beast older than time and then the ability to kill said eldritch beast all by himself when in comparison it's recommended to have like 10 damage casters with at least 5 support members for each to kill the exact same thing if you're not laios touden bc there is a guaranteed 50% casualty rate that would be fun!"

and then i wrote this scene between chilchuck and laios both working in the merchant caravan laios worked for after leaving the army/before going to the island where laios to convince chilchuck he can handle the dungeon which chilchuck thinks he can't "mostly i was killing things that take like 50 people to kill" and that freaks out chilchuck so he breaks up with him, then ends up going back to him three years later bc he's worried about what the dungeon is doing to laios, and ends up joining his party in order to put him back on leash. (no it's not just a metaphor laios is practically canonically a furry he is chilchuck's dog/puppy i haven't written a literal collar/leash scene yet but there will be at least two.)

so obviously i had to write a scene when they're both in the dungeon and they run into this thing older than time. so i did. and suddenly i realized the polycule fic i had started with the intention of having falin go missing and the remaining touden party all ending up in a pile on top of chilchuck who begrudgingly allows the cuddles, but what i really had was chilchuck realizing he's in love with a thing and dear god that thing cannot run loose in a dungeon i must put a choke chain on him and keep him on a short leash, meanwhile laios is too dangerous for his own good and needs to be kept on a choke chain. they have this really convoluted we're more than friends but also this is purely a friends with benefits situation but also i would die for you. i would willingly let things worse than death happen to me for you, and it sort of explodes bc dealing with the eldritch thing older than time gives laios super bad ptsd and chilchuck has to tell him their relationship is not just benefits in order to literally save him from his own mind, the only monster that's more dangerous than he is.

bc like,,, listen snippet under the cut. warning for dehumanizing laios. in a pitying way. bc the thing he's fighting can drive the human mind insane with one look and laios is the only person who's ever been immune. (also the thing is called a revenant i did not invent revenants they're like a common ghostie in a lot of cultures i think)

i've literally never started writing something, gotten a good chunk of the way in, and realized i had ended up writing something completely different than what i started with. it's kinda cool?? also the vibe of No Children by the Mountain goats fits really well and i like paraphrased it to match this chilaois plot, like it's chilchuck's pov thinking about laios. and it just makes so much more sense with this vibe to have it be strictly chilaois instead of chilchuck + a harem including laios, marcille, senshi, and platonically izutsumi bc they already had a dog and a cat was a perfect addition.

"I had hoped that since I found the strength to walk out, you’d stay the hell out of my way. I’d hoped that when you saw me again, years down the line, you couldn’t think of one good thing to say. for all my life, I had lied, and told everyone you were a bad dog, but i had always known i’d already sunk deep into you like a peat bog, and i am ready and willing to drown. I had hoped it would stay bright forever, but now i know the worst isn’t over, and i still don’t know what to say. my friends all say it’s darkest before the sun rises, but i’m pretty sure they’re all wrong. i know the sun doesn't reach underground, and now i know the fences we mended must have fallen down beneath their own weight. So now I hope the worst really isn’t over, I hope you blink before I do; I hope I never get sober. I hope we both hold on past the last floor, but I know it’s already too late. His whole Don’t get too personal with party members or wild animals rule is really biting him in the ass, because he suddenly wants to see how Laios manages to kill a Revenant all by himself for some reason, no matter how disturbing it looks to witness, regardless of how Laios had begged him not to look. He wants to see how Laios manages to move like an Eldritch beast older than time itself. He wants to see the Revenant get confused when it is suddenly faced with something that is more dangerous than it, when probably since it first crawled out of its deep dark hole in the earth, nothing had been able to match it evenly let alone best it. He wants to watch it start to feel fear for the first time in its miserable existence all because a wild thing like Laios Touden had entered its canyon. He wants to see Laios be a predator to something so much older than reality it can’t follow the laws of common sense, having never once learned them. He wants to see it because it sounds disturbing, because Laios had asked him not to look, like seeing a train about to crash and not being able to close your eyes for the sake of morbid curiosity. How will Laios explode when he and the Revenant finally collide? Those times when he gets that dark, deeply wild animal sort of look in his eyes are rare, and Chilchuck is both afraid of and attracted to them, constantly aware that he somehow holds power over a dangerous, deadly thing like Laios Touden through methods even he doesn't fully understand. Because even the wild thing in Laios Touden is willing to submit to him, happy to, and a wild thing that can kill Revenants without help shouldn’t be something that is willing to kneel before a man as small and physically weak as Chilchuck Tims.

Right now? Chilchuck realizes that Laios must be shedding his mask, completely. He’s becoming something that’s more him and nothing at all like him at the same time, and he actually wants to see what that looks like. Even when he had explicitly been asked not to look. Especially because he of all people had been asked not to look. He wants to know what Laios becomes when he’s the most himself he could ever possibly be.

How feral is the touch-starved, shunned and beaten, abandoned pup that still thinks he’s totally unlovable where it counts at the heart of Laios Touden? Truly? That was what Chilchuck had told Dandan Laios is, after all. A slightly too-feral starving dog with a bone, always afraid everything is going to be taken from him, and so unable to unlock his teeth once they have sunk into something. But how far down in Laios’s psyche does his hunger and unnatural instinct come from? How deep does that dungeon go, and what gold-eyed, forgotten, lonely beast lurks at the bottom of it, that sends even Revenants running in fear? 

What else would run in fear from a wild, unknowable, incomprehensible thing like Laios Touden? 

And why doesn't Chilchuck run in fear from him? 

If Chilchuck were there to see him take down such a dangerous, deadly beast with ease, would the animal inside of Laios that makes even a Revenant afraid recognize him still? Would it go sniffing his hand and whine for a pat on the head like Laios does when he’s (mostly) not feral, or would it turn on him, too? Would Chilchuck still not be afraid of him, once he saw what the thing at the heart of him truly is?

Hey, do you remember this post I made where I shared a silly heart-shaped shell build with the outside painted to resemble the polyamory flag colors to celebrate Polyamory Day? And then the tags on this post I reblogged featuring a "third wheel" bed where I mentioned I was working on turning said shell into a house for my Valicer OT3?

Happy Valicertine's Week, it's time to share the completed house! :D Well, mostly completed -- as you can see, I did not do anything with the area AROUND the house. ^^; Landscaping is not my strong point, and I was very focused on getting the interior done up just the way I wanted. Which took a lot of doing, let me tell you. ALT free placement and "bb.moveobjects on" were VERY heavily used in this particular build! But I got it done up to my satisfaction, and now it's time to show it off to all of you! :D Here are some of the key fun facts about this build:

-->You may notice a very strong theme of yellow, blue, and red in this build -- that's because those are the colors I chose to represent Smiler, Victor, and Alice respectively. I wanted to use as much of them throughout the house as possible, so I tended to favor those objects that had a bit of each color somewhere within them. Though as you can see, I wasn't afraid to use other colors -- green is well represented in the dining nook in the kitchen; two of the bathrooms are more tealy than anything else; and the furniture in the living room tends toward the maroon/purple. Because I like purple. :p

-->As you might imagine, the layout of this house was a bit of a bitch to figure out, mostly because, well, it's a fucking HEART. That is not a shape that lends itself well to being divided up into livable space! But I think what I came up with works well enough -- yeah, all the of the rooms are pretty small, and the bathrooms in particular are kind of cramped (being crammed into triangles or that weird M-shape at the top between the heart bumps), but it's not the worst.

-->Also, yes, this is house with one bedroom but three bathrooms. XD Look, I couldn't think of another thing to turn that "M" room into, and the triangles were well-suited for being small bathrooms on the side! My justification is that Victor, Alice, and Smiler definitely don't mind sharing a bed, but they'd all prefer to be able to use the toilet whenever they like, thanks.

-->In the bedroom, you may notice that we have a double bed underneath a loft bed? That was directly inspired by the "third wheel" bed post I linked up above -- I just had to do it in a different configuration because Sims 4 doesn't have any beds like the one in the post. The idea is that they can all cuddle in the lower double bed if they wanted -- but if one of them (usually Alice, hence why the loft bed is red) really wants to sleep "alone," they can go up onto the loft bed. I have to admit, though, making that bed combo REALLY drove home how few actual loft and bunk beds we have, even with the fifty million bits of DLC they've released since making them a thing. EA, you wanna convert a few more of these single beds we have lying around?

-->My big thing about this house was giving Alice, Smiler, and Victor each their own, equally-sized room for them to do their own things in. Alice's room has the Cottage Living typewriter computer for her writing, a Digitalistic Sketch Pad for drawing, a Moschino camera and tripod for taking pictures, and chess for unwinding; Smiler's room has a big fancy computer and a smart speaker for them to have fun with; a chemistry bench for them to whip up chemical concoctions on; a guitar for them to play; a yoga mat for them to do yoga; and a microphone for them to sing/tell jokes; and Victor's room has a very fancy grand piano for his music, his own Digitalistic Sketch Pad for drawing, and a nice easel for painting! I'm not ENTIRELY sure they're all equally sized, because Smiler's room had to go in the middle, and thus ended up a little small just so it didn't cut off the hallways on either side -- but then again, Victor and Alice both lose some floor space to their big curved walls, so maybe it evens out. *shrug* Plus it's probably worth noting that Smiler gets the most activities in the living room with that games table and the console beside the TV.

-->Fun fact: If you have High School Years and Growing Together? That little "thrifted" floor cabinet from the former makes an excellent "games cupboard" as the decorative puzzles and board games from the latter fit very well in/atop it. :) As does the more risque board game from Lovestruck. XD

-->Doing the kitchen was one of my favorite parts of this build -- I genuinely had a great time fitting together cabinets, counters, appliances, and decorations. I am an absolute sucker for making a kitchen look properly cluttered and lived-in now for some reason. XD And those kitchen shelves from Cool Kitchen Stuff! They need more love. (And proper slots to fit things on! Did I really need to MOO that cookie jar and teapot up there, EA?)

-->No, I have no idea if everything in this house is usable or if a Sim could actually live here. I decided early on that this had to be a "show house" so I could use MOO to my heart's content. And also so my Sims didn't have to cram themselves into a heart. XD

So yeah, that's the build! Though, yeah, given all the interior walls in this particular house, you could probably tell that taking pictures of it was a bit tough. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go right into the house and be able to take a tour of it?
