Jan Mijtens (Dutch, 1614-1670) Portrait of Maria of Orange (1642-1688), with Hendrik van Zuijlestein (d. 1673) and a Servant, ca.1665 Mauritshuis, Den Haag This is the portrait of Princess Maria of Orange, the youngest daughter of stadholder Frederik Hendrik. It was intended for her future husband, so that he could see what she looked like. The princess is attired in a striking riding habit decorated with lots of lace, gold braid and bows. To her right, a black page is holding the reins of her grey horse. The blond boy on the left is Hendrik, the son of Maria’s half-brother.

Double Portrait of Frederik Hendrik (1584- 1647) and Amalia of Solms-Braunfels (1602- 1675)
Artist: Gerard van Honthorst (Dutch, 1592–1656)
Date: c.1637-1638
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands
Depicted People:
Frederick Henry of Orange-Nassau
Amalia of Solms-Braunfels
Description
This portrait of Stadholder Frederik Hendrik and Amalia of Solms was painted by their court painter, Gerrit van Honthorst. It is clearly an official state portrait: the couple are depicted in all their finery, life-size and full length. It was made to mark Frederik Hendrik’s recapture of Breda in 1637.
Van Honthorst painted the portrait for the Grote Zaal (Large Hall) at Huis ter Nieuburg, one of the stadholder’s residences near Rijswijk, but the painting was later lost. The painting here is a copy made by Van Honthorst for Constantijn Huygens, Frederik Hendrik’s secretary. It originally hung in Huygens’s home on the Plein, opposite the Mauritshuis.

Hendrik Krock (July 21, 1671 - 1738) was a Danish Court painter in the Baroque style. He advocated for the foundation of a Royal Academy of Arts, and while first rejected by King Frederik 4., he was given the task of establishing such an Academy by King Christian 6.
Krock's own art consisted of history paintings, mythological and religious pieces, and he was renowned for the speed with which he produced these.

Regency Era Accessories: The Chapeau
Hats were so important to a Regency woman's wardrobe that they are the only accessory that had its own fashion plates.
Just to note that I chose to use the French names for the various hats and fabrics. The term "poke bonnet" just doesn't have the same ring! Besides, I love everything French!

Left: An assortment of chapeaux de crépe and chapeaux de gros de Naples [fig. 3] • (Gros de Naples is a thick silk fabric. Here, it is inset with tulle and tied at the crown with a scarf.)
[fig. 2] "Chapeau de Crèpe” is made of a lighter-weight silk. The crown is less structured, due to the less sturdy fabric, but uses more flowers to fill in the shape. The chin ribbon is trimmed in lace and falls from the crown in a unique way. – via Regency World
Right: Various chapeaux and lace bonnets. (More about lace bonnets in another post)
