So, all I can do is say is this: What I have to say about stress management has saved my life. Will it help you? I don’t know, but it helped me. What I have to say is a writer’s digest version of my training events. I hope this helps, for all stress management courses and systems are better than nothing at all and not dealing with stress. [My credentials? Surely not my Ph.D., for my doctorate is in medieval history, very early medieval history. My credentials are real, not educational, though I have read hundreds of books on stress, worked with thousands of folks, and have been training disaster officials and first responders for decades. Here’s my credentials: I am a geezer, smiling and really enjoying life, after having been: (abbreviated list) raised in a hyper-religious environment by a dad born in 1899 and a mom in 1901; dealt with manic-depression, Asperger’s, and other whack-job brain stuff; flunked out of college on a full-ride scholarship because of concussion, lack of skills, drinking, etc.; survived four years of being a Russian linguist in Army Security during a war I never went to; survived a full decade of college and graduate school nonsense; lost a son to a long term terminal illness; gone bankrupt for many serious reasons; dealt with a variety of addictions, mine and others; and got old in spite of all of the above.] A) I once gave my course to dozens of civil engineers working in state transportation agencies. Only that one time did I NOT have to explain that “stress” is a from-the-outside applied force, while “strain” is the changes in the system caused by the externally-applied stress. Stress is them and that, Strain is this and you. These terms are misused by most, who use stress for both stress and strain. This is the shirt from last year's ARTIST IN RESIDENCY at the Robert Henri Art Museum. Now it's back to: Rural Hazmat Planning and Preparedness © 2017 Frederick J. Cowie, Ph.D. I spent most of my emergency management career doing two separate but related things: FIRST, working with part time rural emergency managers and volunteer fire fighters, developing workable and usable county emergency management plans when there were real hazards and a decided lack of response personnel, equipment, supplies, and experience, yet we needed to keep the county as safe as possible; and SECOND, talking to paid, career fire and hazmat responders who would be arriving from “afar,” and explaining to them the realities of rural America, whether it be in “frontier states” like Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Idaho and such, or just the rural areas thirty-forty-fifty miles from an urban or metropolitan area far east or far west from Helena. After taking a year off to develop skills in music theory, live singing as a vocalist, and sound engineering of live music, I am again available for keynote, breakout, and luncheon presentations at fire, law, EMS, emergency management and tribal conferences. Because of my training hiatus generated by my singing career, except for the second week in May 2018, my calendar is clear for 2018 training gigs. I recently sent out my STRESS MANAGMENT IN STRESSFUL TIMES training e-mail (which can be resent if you trashed it), but I am attaching a few newsletter articles typical of my style and my resume for reference regarding rural hazmat and preparedness.
