Luthor 'Rook' de Riva pt.2

Yes i'm back to thrust my Rook into the masses because I'm honestly falling in love with him the more I play him. As someone trying to be a writer, its been very easy to actually construct a personality for this dude as I play along, and I have to say, the big bastard may have to have a cameo in an actual story one day (sans being a qunari obviously)

So Spoilers below for those still making their way through the game.

Luthor likes Neve a lot, and immediately cast her into the 'big sister who may or may not kick my ass', a position solely occupied by Teia up till now. Having her and Harding around is a big relief to Luthor. H has no fucking clue how he ended up in charge of everything, so its a comfort to know Neve will have no issues chewing him out if he starts fucking up. He has a deep respect for the motives behind what she does...which is why choosing to save his home before tending to Minrathous hits the poor guy hard.....They both knew he had an impossible choice, but that doesn't make it suck any less that Neve doesn't quite trust him as much.

Davrin is one of those guys that reminds Luthor that he'll never be as cool as all his new friends. But beyond that, he can see parallels between his and Davrins lives. Luthor also found himself on his own when young, and his need to not be alone, coupled with being built big, made him an easy target for people that wanted to use him. From pit fighting to 'enforcing' for shady people. He was essentially a people pleaser who met all the wrong people. Luthor could have ended up down a very dark path if Teia hadn't seen something in him enough to push him on Viago. But Davrin chose an honourable path, that led him to the Wardens, an institution that Luthor admires despite some of the more unsavory elements coming to light over the years. He probably admires Davrin a lot but likely privately compares how much better Davrin handled that start on life. But mild unspoken resentment is all it is, because Davrin is a solid guy and he has a freakin Griffon!!!

As for Lucanis? Oh boy, poor Luthor was never prepared for that. He took leaving the crows with Varric pretty hard. Teia and Viago put a lot of work into turning a young thug into a force to be reckoned with, as well as providing him with that sense of family that he always lacked. He loved the crows and leaving felt like he'd let himself down hard. It took Varric's patience and a lot of time to think to balance him out while they hunted for Solas.

Then along comes Lucanis. Not only does this put him in the position to have to face Viago and the others, but Catarina, the scariest lady in the world as far as Luthor is concerned. They rescue this dude who is like....10,000 times more cooler than he is, and its about half a week before my poor big lad realises he has about the most ill advised crush on Lucanis, who compounds being hot as hell with being a decent person....for an assassin.

This guys is the likely heir to first Talon, of an institute luthor got half kicked out of. He has a demon in him, but that's not even half as scary as the fact that he's Catarina's grandson! He's impeccable in every way, and for Luthor, ever the people pleaser, hearing that man yell encouragement and praise in the middle of the battlefield, i swear......

....this expression right here, is Luthor's expression every time. If he were an animal I would label him as a super friendly but loyal Cane Corso, and if he had a tail it would fucking wag every time the Demon of fucking Vyrantium, yells "Beautiful Rook!"

I have issues, but I also have writers block and building Luthor up hour by hour as I play helps!

Fhdjdjjd i do, i do get it. I was there when people replied to others saying "solas avatar, blocked" and I remember how hard it was to be one of the few that made a correct analysis of that character. They finally gave us the proof that we were right all along and it's been glorious

I don't give the Inquisitor much credit for... well, anything. Let's face it. They're no Warden.

BUT

During the battle at Haven, the only realistic way it could actually play out is for the Inquisitor to go ALONE. Your companions tag along because gameplay mechanics, but there would be no way for them to survive, since they run off when Corypheus comes in to deal with you personally. But five minutes later we get the signal to set off the last trebuchet.

The Inquisitor really would have to go "Nope. No one's gotta die but me." and rush out there alone for ANY of it to make sense.

And I just wish that that had actually happened in game. It would have been a crazy powerful moment to give the Inquisitor. It would have made EVERYTHING more meaningful. The whole "died and came back" Messiah narrative would have been so much more powerful if we'd seen it play out as just the Inquisitor running off into the fight and make that kind of self-sacrifice. It would have also made it make sense why they're chosen to be the Inquisitor. Cass mentions that the Herald leads them out of Haven, but any leading is done in a freakin cutscene. And even then we're not really leading. We're following Solas' guidance.

Early on, Bull tells you that a leader has to be someone willing to make the hard choices. A Herald throwing themselves into a hopeless fight to give everyone else a fighting chance? THAT would have been their moment.

More importantly, however, it would have finally, FINALLY given the Herald some agency. We are basically just Cass' and Leliana's little hand puppet through the first half and we're not there because we have a CHOICE. Deciding that they're willing to die to save the Inquisition to give the world a fighting chance against Corypheus? Would have finally given the Herald that moment of deciding "You know what? I might die, but before I do that, Imma make these assholes BLEED for it." and do it of their own volition.

Cause I don't know about you, but my Inquisitor is busy cranking a fucking handle while Cass and Blackwall are doing all the heavy lifting fight-wise. And that doesn't really build a whole "Hero of Haven" narrative.

In my two playthroughs (both romancing Emmrich so some bias to be expected), I've seen:

- assisting Neve with a murder case

- Discerning the Gloom Howler's nature for Davrin

- Making Gingerwort tea for Rook and Davrin

- Corpse whispering Zara for Lucanis

- Offering breathing techniques for Bellara to help her calm down enough to sleep

**- I haven't seen the cutscene but know it exists of helping Harding to understand how her new magic works (I think you get it when you romance Harding, others can confirm)

If there is a scene of him helping Taash, I've not seen it yet, but yeah, he's really into the whole "help everyone else with their own problems" and I'm here for it.

He also drops a LOT of hints to obtaining the best possible ending (encourages everyone to resolve their own problems, suggests/encourages Rook to talk with Solas, either to use the fake Ritual dagger he made while Rook was in the Fade prison, points out the need for mercy and compassion even when others have done wrong ((you get this in a banter where someone asks why they didn't just kill Johanna, I believe it's with Davrin)), etc. Hell, there is a dialogue that even hints that he mightve spotted the prison Rook gets stuck in, but wasn't sure exactly what it was (not could he as he readily admits throughout the game that there's so much of the Fade he nor other mortal experts can possibly know or comprehend).

((Take this bit with a grain of salt as I'm not sure if he was eluding to the Fade Prison as intended by the writers or if it was just a case of the writers wanting to keep up thr mysticism of the Fade despite the players now spending a lot of time in there.))

Later, when you go to Blackthorne manor and Johanna leaves you 'trapped' in the Fade, Emmrich assures Rook that there's always a way out, just that one needs to look or figure out the trick. Also, in that particular section of the Fade, there's a whole passage you go through and what are the walls. Hands. Lots of hands. Where else does the player see a lot of hands?

The Regret Prison, where Solas is and where Rook will eventually end up. Coincidence? Maybe. I don't know, I'm probably overthinking it, or maybe it's the point the writers are trying to make. If you romance Emmrich, he brings you back to the Necropolis (not just for romancing in the coffin) but to use it's enchantments to ensure that whatever magical influence Solas has on you is completely gone, so that first time you, Emmrich, and the unfortunate third party member gets pulled into a section of the Fade might have had some of its appearance influenced by Solas' blood magic.

Anyways, my point is: Emmrich is one of the most important characters in Veilguard and not for the most blatantly obvious reasons like the rest (Bellara fixes the Eluvians and thus makes fast travel necessary, Harding scouts out potential leads and Rook would be wandering aimlessly without her abilities to gain allies in a timely manner, Neve helps you track down the Dread Wolf and makes navigating the dangerous roads of Minrathous much easier, Lucanis is literally hired to kill a freakin' God, something no other person is capable of doing, Davrin provides the knowledge and skill to face off against an evolved form of Darkspawn, the bulk of the Gods' army, and Taash is THE dragon hunter, providing necessary knowledge and strength to help take down the Gods' most powerful weapons, the corrupted high Dragons and archdemons.) Compared to the others, Emmrich's role as the Fade expert is obviously just as important, but is more subtlely done and may not be truly appreciated at initial viewing. Besides that, and in keeping with topic with the OC's point, he also helps bring in a lot of the more mundane but easily important, human elements, and that's just as important to have to a group that is clearly meant to be seen as a Found Family trope.

Peepaw just wants everyone to be happy and healthy and I find that adorable and neat.

I like how Emmrich's ability is useful to the other companions and helps them in their personnal quests <3 He truly is my favourite

One thing I'm thinking about a lot is Rena's expierience with magic.

As I said before she has magic related trauma. She was a leader of her group in her Tal-Vashoth times. She saw many of her people murdered by magic. And she knows she is also a murderer, but she thinks killing with any kind of weapon is less cruel than anything she saw can be done with magic (I'm not saying she's right, just what she thinks is true).

She isn't radical, but: 1. she doesn't trust mages 2. she thinks templars are needed and doing good job, altough they have their flaws.

So - she doesn't really like Solas, but he's smart and he's helping (she took him to templars base in hope they will get rid of him for her tho). Dorian? He run to warn them and helped fighting against other mages. He also can stay for now. But when Vivienne almost killed a guy with magic at Rena's eyes, and was all playful about it... Instant red flag. No thank you, we don't need your help.

And also that means she is so freakin scared of green mark on her hand. She doesn't want it. That's her main purpouse - get rid of it. Everything else that's happening? Side effects.

She just happens to be very good at commanding people. Like it's in her blood.

Wind and Wars need to hug. Wind has had far too many Things happening on this quest to not receive them and he really looks up to Wars, but he's doing the Teenage Boy thing of not asking for affection bc he's trying to act adult. He's 17, still a kid fr, and Wars needs to hug him and tell him he loves him and is proud of him. The same thing needs to happen w Time and Wars fr (and they might have gotten that a little when Wars went off to talk to him in the orchard after that blow up) but I've been thinking abt Wind and Wars since he got spooked by Twilight, okay. It has been a thought on my mind for a LONG time.

Please please think about the chain going back to Sky's era and Twi chatting with Sun and playing with Sky's kids. He Loves kids, he is so good with them fr, he'd think Polly and Sola are delightful (if energetic together). Think about his Thing with Sky. Think about how Sky would feel watching Twilight laugh and entertain all of them and then look over at Sky with this bright, happy smile. There are butterflies in Sky's stomach and he can't get them to go away. He's gotta talk to Sun about this wolfman STAT jxgxgdjssb. Same vein, Sky meeting Hazel and getting teased by Telma and aggressively assessed by Dusk.

Ooh! We talked about this the other day. Wars learning violin and he and Legend playing together! Legend on piano or cello 🥰 My mans Warriors can't play wind instruments but he should get to try all the types before giving up on playing music, especially with a musical savant bf

If you are feeling down, we have just the thing! Piggybacking off of Kio, I’m gonna tell you something about the Hero of Warriors. This is a man who loves music. Adores it to pieces. He grew up around it if in a very everyday sense, because his mother hummed and sang as she went about her day around the house. He doesn’t know it because she liked to improvise and mashup melodies, but he actually grew up listening to what essentially amounts to the soundtrack of the rest of the chains adventures. As such, he has a VERY keen ear for melody and gasp, the whiteboi has RHYTHM !! if Legend could just get him to pick up a string instrument (Any string instrument, sized for his hands and devoid of having to blow any kind of air into it), he would be a very happily surprised savant.

If that isn’t enough, then I feel obligated to impart to you this snapshot into New Parents Sun And Sky.

For the first year and a half, despite having two fully functional cribs for their two daughters, the baby furniture sat gathering dust at night. Why, might you ask— and I’ll happily tell you.

It’s because they were both so enamored with the cute and terrified at how small the twins were, that they were afraid to be outside of arms reach of them and thus the babies slept in between them. Sun and Sky would curl up, more or less fetal position but not quite, and create a barrier between themselves and the scary long drop from the bedside to the floor.

Their daughters slept right in the middle of a mommy and daddy heart shape, and I just think that’s neat. ❤

I was born on the third of Bloomingtide, 9:19 Dragon. You ever feel happy having Skyhold up here? Yeah. I didn't really grow up here, more in the Freemarches than anything, but looking out my bedroom window and seeing the mountains is... nostalgic, in a way. Feels more like home than home ever did.

What is your weapon of choice and fighting style? AXES BABY!!! Don't matter what kind! Greataxe, one handed, double axes, I'll rock your shit! Don't doubt it! You are a beast out there! Ah, didn't you become a reaver or whateva? Bull says you smell nice, heh... Yeah, drank some dragon blood, tasted like ASS KICKING- but I'm still a dwarven berserker at heart, y'know? Family and Friends

What’s your family like? What is your relationship with them? You already know the answer to this, Sera. It's on the thing, sorry, but I don't control it! Fine, fine. My family was, I don't know... they were just them. Everyone was sort of different. It was just us 4, since, well, forever. Actually, we were a pretty normal family, given that my Father was the Carta's top dog. Lived in a lofty estate, Mom stayed home and took care of us kids. My Father, though, he had more of a warrior-like mindset. Maybe a noble man, gone a bit too far. He taught me to fight at a really young age, showed me all the techniques of a berserker. Maybe my Dad wasn't the best Dad in a Fatherly sense, but he was one hell of a good teacher. He was pretty cool, too... He enlisted to join the Legion of the Dead, hah! Fought down there for awhile, saw some shit, came home due to... reasons. Be glad he didn't die down there, or you wouldn't have the freakin-Herald-of-Andraste here! But yeah, I got most of what I know today from him. He raised me to be his replacement, fill in his boots when his time came to fall in battle. Taught me honor and leadership. Guess I was a bit too wild for even him, though, gave me too much freedom, because he felt it necessary to bound be down in marriage. Ugh, The Carta's not supposed to be like Orzammar! But here we are, acting like nobles with our castes, arranging marriages, blech. He always was obsessed with keeping the Cadash bloodline alive and pure. Yeesh. Just, yeesh. Yeah. My relationship with them is still broken. More with my Father than my Mother and my younger sister. Hell, I don't even know Seli that well, haah. Wasn't around to see her grow up. They've sent messages to me though, since Haven. None that I've bothered to respond to, though...

Have you ever ran away from home? Of course! At least, I tried. Ran away from the marriage, but I was inevitably caught. Carta has eyes everywhere, I tell you. Turns out, I didn't need to. They left me anyways.

Would you consider marriage or having children? Marriage? Children? Oooh yeah, ironic question given what I just told you, don't you think? So I'll take that as a no? Put that marriage option down as a maybe.

Do you secretly hate one of your friends? Yes. You. I hate you. Shut up! Joking, joking. I wouldn't be friends with my friends if I hated them!
