The Original Karens: From Emmett Till’s Accuser To The White Woman Who Sparked The Tulsa Massacre

In this current climate of protests and demands for justice, the entitled and indignant white women known as “Karens” appear to be falling apart.

From Amy Cooper, whose over dramatic 911 call on a birdwatching Black man blew up in her face, to Lisa Alexander, who was shocked to discover that no one needs her permission to write “Black Lives Matter” in chalk on their own property, Karens are in a rage. Not even a camera in their face will stop their toxic entitlement, which has led to a string of viral sensations.

When thinking of the country’s experiences with white supremacist violence, the discussions are typically centered around men. However, white women have historically been at the helm of this terror, using their tears and imaginary delicateness as ammunition for victim hood and ultimately destroying lives or at its worst, taking one.

Once upon a time, even the slightest hint that white womanhood may be in danger resulted in the lynching of Black children or a thriving town full of Black families being burned to the ground.

Here are some of the most horrific stories of Karens going wild before the term came into existence.

Sarah Page

There has been a lot of talk around Tulsa, Oklahoma due to this month's 99th anniversary of the tragic race massacre that took place there in 1921. Many people may not know the race massacre began with a 17-year-old named Sarah Page.

Page was an elevator operator in what was called the Drexel Building in downtown Tulsa. On May 30, 1921, reportedly, Dick Rowland, a 19-year-old Black shoe shiner, was getting on the elevator to use a segregated bathroom on a higher floor. He allegedly tripped when entering the elevator, accidentally grabbed Page's arm and she reacted by screaming. Rowland fled but the police were called. The next day, Rowland was arrested and word spread that a Black man assaulted a white woman.

According to the 2001 Tulsa Race Riot Commission Report via The Washington Post, Rowland was accused of assaulting Page “on a public elevator in broad daylight."

Within 18 hours, the Greenwood district of Tulsa, also known as Black Wall Street, was annihilated. In 1921, The New York Times described the massacre as “one of the most disastrous race wars ever visited upon an American city.”

No one knows what happened to Sarah Page or Dick Rowland after the massacre.

Fannie Taylor

On January 1, 1923, 22-year-old Fannie Taylor began screaming outside of her home. A neighbor rushed to the distressed white woman only to find her beaten and bruised, yelling for her baby. Miss Fannie claimed a Black man broke into her home and attacked her. The neighbor searched her house to find the baby safe and no signs of a break in.

Rumors quickly spread that Taylor was raped and robbed by a Black man. Taylor’s husband, James Taylor, gathered a group of men to find the imaginary criminal, even calling on the Klu Klux Klan for assistance.

A pack of 400 terrorists headed to the neighboring area, an affluent Black town in Rosewood, Florida, accusing any Black man they could of the crime. Fannie’s fraudulent tears was the excuse these envious hellions needed to purge out their rage.

Their first victim was Sam Carter, a local blacksmith, who was tortured and hung. They eventually began looking for a man named Jesse Hunter, who they claimed was an escaped convict.

The Black residents of Rosewood fought back but there were many casualties, including Sarah Carrier, a woman who did Fannie Taylor’s laundry. She was shot in the head, according to History.com. Her son Sylvester Carrier was also fatally shot.

The race massacre lasted for a week, burning Rosewood to the ground and killing countless Black people.

As for Fannie Taylor, she reportedly had an affair with a white man who beat her, which is why she had been found abused that night. She thought it was better to accuse a Black man of assault then to take accountability for her own actions.

The 1997 film Rosewood, directed by the late John Singleton, depicted the massacre.

Eleanor Strubing

In December of 1940, Eleanor Strubing, a wealthy white woman in Connecticut accused her 31-year-old Black chauffeur, Joseph Spell, of raping her four times and throwing her into a river. Spell was arrested within hours and immediately sent to jail to wait for trial.

The New York Times famously ran a story with the headline, "Mrs. J.K. Strubing Is Kidnapped And Hurled Off Bridge by Butler; WOMAN KIDNAPPED; HURLED OFF BRIDGE." The article claimed he “confessed after 16 hours" of questioning.

Spell was facing 30 years in prison.

Thankfully, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and its head lawyer, Thurgood Marshall, represented Spell. Marshall and his co-counsel proved evidence that Strubing lied. She, in fact, had consensual sex with Spell and jumped in the river because she was terrified that she might become pregnant from their affair. In her mind, the only option was to accuse Spell of rape in order to justify a possible pregnancy.

An all-white jury found Joseph Spell not guilty, which was shocking for the time. Nonetheless, if this accusation would have been made in the South, Joseph Spell certainly would have died by public lynching.

Wil Haygood, the author of Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination That Changed America, wrote about the ruling, "It was a miracle. But Thurgood Marshall trafficked in miracles.”

Strubing, whose father was an investment banker and the former governor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange, suffered no punishment for lying under oath. Her husband, John K. Strubing, died in 1961 and she remarried to John W. Barclay. Stribing died at 92 years old in 2000.

Joseph Spell moved to East Orange, New Jersey after the trial. It’s not clear when he passed away.

Carolyn Bryant

In August of 1955, 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant accused 14-year-old Emmett Till of touching her and whistling at her in a store (he reportedly had a lisp and was unable to whistle.) Till, who was visiting from Chicago, was in Mississippi for the summer spending time with family. Within hours, he was kidnapped from his uncle’s home. The child was tortured, mutilated and thrown into the Tallahatchie River. His naked body was weighed down with a fan blade.

Carolyn’s husband, Roy Bryant and her brother-in-law J.W. Milam, the terrorists who lynched Till, were found not guilty by an all-white jury.

In the 2017 book The Blood of Emmett Till by Timothy Tyson, Carolyn Bryant admitted to lying and claimed that she actually didn’t remember what happened that day in the store.

She is still alive today, living in Mississippi at 86 years old. Emmett Till would have been 79 years old on July 25 if it wasn’t for Carolyn Bryant.

The 65th anniversary of his death is August 28.

Victoria Price and Ruby Bates

Before The Central Park Five in 1989, which would become the Exonerated Five in 2002, there was the Scottsboro Boys in 1932.

On Mach 25, 1931, a group of Black and white teenagers were riding freight trains looking for work, which was common during the Great Depression. The white teens wanted the Black teens off the train and a fight broke out. The white teens attempted to forcibly throw the Black teens from the train. In defending themselves, the Black teenagers instead kicked the white teens off the locomotive.

The angry white teens went to a local sheriff who demanded the train be stopped.

Nine Black teens were removed, ages 13 to 19. However, two white women, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, were also on the train and spent their time wrongfully accusing several of the Black boys of rape.

Similar to the Exonerated Five, that one accusation stole the innocence of nine Black children.

The teens were jailed in Scottsboro, Alabama: Haywood Patterson, 18; Clarence Norris, 19: Charlie Weems, 19; brothers Andy Wright, 19 and Leroy Wright, 13; Olin Montgomery, who was nearly blind, 17; Ozie Powell, 16; Eugene Williams, 13, and Willie Roberson, 16, who could barely walk due to severe syphilis.

The all-white and all-male jury trial was over in a matter of days and all of them — except 13-year-old Leroy Wright — were found guilty of rape and given the death penalty. There was no evidence of course since Bates couldn’t identify the men she claimed raped her.

The NAACP and the International Labor Defense (ILD), the legal wing of the American Communist Party, joined the case. By November 1932, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Scottsboro defendants had been denied the right to counsel. Shortly after, Ruby Bates admitted she lied.

Nonetheless, the back and forth with the courts continued for years.

By 1936, Haywood Patterson was convicted of rape and sentenced to 75 years. In 1948, he escaped from prison and made it to Michigan. The governor refused to extradite him to Alabama. By 1951, Patterson was convicted of manslaughter after a barroom brawl. In 1952, he died of cancer. He was 39 years old.

In July of 1937, Clarence Norris was eventually convicted of rape and sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled in 1946 and moved north, where he married and had children. His autobiography, The Last of the Scottsboro Boys was released in 1979. He passed away in 1989 at 76 years old.

In July of 1937, Andrew Wright was convicted of rape and sentenced to 99 years. He was released in 1950 at 38 years old. Charlie Weems was also convicted of rape and paroled in 1943. He spent the rest of his life in Atlanta. It’s not clear when or if Wright and Weems have passed away.

Ozie Powell’s rape charges were dropped but he pled guilty to assaulting a deputy, which happened while in custody. He was released from prison in 1946. After spending four years on death row as adults, all charges against Willie Roberson, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, and Leroy Wright were dropped.

It is not known how or when Willie Roberson, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, or Ozie Powell died.

After being released, Leroy Wright, the youngest, went on a national lecture tour and then joined the Army. In 1959, according to PBS, Wright accused his wife of having an affair, fatally shot her and then committed suicide. He was 41 years old.

As for Victoria Price and Ruby Bates, Price never recanted her testimony and died in 1982 at 77 years old. Bates had the privilege of going on a speaking tour, bizarrely, for the International Labor Defense (ILD), which defended the Scottboro Boys. She claimed to have lied because she was "excited and frightened by the ruling class of Scottsboro." Bates died in 1976.

The True Story Behind The Cottingley Fairies And The 5 REAL Fairy Sightings You Have To Hear About

It’s a simple story.

Two young girls in a quiet corner of West Yorkshire happened to be playing by a small brook at the bottom of a garden, and claimed they saw some fairies.

So convinced they were by what they saw that they took a camera and photographed their new friends.

This is where things get complicated.

They took 5 pictures. 4 were debunked. The final picture to this day has not been proven fraudulent.

The Cottingley Fairies sent the spiritualist world - and the non-believers surrounding it - into disarray, confirming that these mythical creatures detailed for centuries across the globe did in fact exist.

Or did they?

Whether you believe in these Bradford-based fae folk or not, the numerous sightings from around the UK might just make you think again.

What Are Fairies?

Gone are the innocent, winged creatures, sprinkling fairy dust over sleeping children and taking selfies with Northerners.

Fairies are actually a**holes.

Fae Folk, as they are also known, are mythical creatures native to Europe, with the epicentre apparently being here, in the UK. The thing is, just like the tale of the Cottingley Fairies, fae folklore is quite complex.

We haven’t even decided on the form they supposedly take according to lore. Some say they are demoted angels or demons for those of the Christian fate, others say they are minor pagan deities, a couple say they are spirits of the dead, and a few even claim they are prehistoric beings that existed before humans did.

And that’s if you believe if they’re not metaphysical.

Yet despite this theoretical divergence, if it often believed that they are humanoid figures with magical powers and a tw*tty disposition. Basically, they like to stir sh*t up.

It’s for this reason that most historic folklore regarding fairies doesn’t resemble the helpful Tinkerbell in the slightest, but rather focuses on how to get rid of 'em.

Whether you’re ringing church bells, wearing clothing inside-out, whipping out four-lead clovers, or using alternative charms to that effect, warding off these creatures is pretty important if you want to stay alive.

When they’re not featuring on lovable Disney Channel movies inspiring young girls that women are in fact amazing, they’re leading travellers down dangerous paths, causing TB and a variety of infant deformities - or kidnapping the young children instead.

And it’s that latter bit, you know, the whole stealing babies bit, which should be given waaay more attention.

Ever wondered if your baby brother had been knicked by fairies and replaced by an alternative fairy child? Me too. Your brother, according to lore, would be known as a changeling. That being said, this was popularised in medieval times as a way to explain medical problems that couldn’t be treated or provided for.

Despite the wide berth of folklore not quite covered in Peter Pan’s movies, we do need to consider one last bit of theory: like witches, they can often take the guise of an animal. The most common example of this is in Scotland where the fairies often take the form of deer.

What Was The Real Story Behind The Cottingley Fairies?

Let’s be real.

I’m a paranormal blogger - I know I’m gullible.

But I also know that the Cottingley Fairies was a hoax. Well, just about anyway.

The Cottingley Fairies were the creatures captured in five photographs taken by cousins Elise Wright and Frances Griffiths in 1917 (both 9 and 16 years of age). But it was only in the 1980s - after they have been at the centre of a media storm - that Elise and Francis admitted the photographs did not depict real fairies.

Instead, they used the Eva Carriere method of cardboard cutouts to pretend they had indeed met fae folk.

Despite this, there are 2 things that still cast doubt over the ‘this-is-utter-BS’ verdict:

First, Elsie maintained that she believed the camera hadn’t captured fairies, but rather the thoughts of a 9 year old girl up until her death. Frances furthered the claims of a supernatural occurrence when she confirmed that the final picture - the one below - was in fact real.

No cardboard cutouts, no doctoring via exposure or Spirit Photography methods…

All we know is something happened down there at Cottingley Beck.

5 Cray-Cray Sightings Of Fairies

Do you want to see a fairy? Want to capture evidence of a demoted demon on a midnight stroll? It’s, like, super easy, trust me.

First, go to a public place. Yeah, anywhere you want.

Then, start having sex with someone. Yep, right there, in a public place. Go ahead.

Oh, that’s not for you? Huh.

Well, it worked for these guys.

#1 - A Cornish Couple Have A, Ahem, Intimate Moment

This Essex couple were probably looking for rural, wild adventures often found in the rustic lifestyle of the West Country, and it’s safe to say they got what they bargained for.

So - they’re getting down to business in a forest.

They then get so into the moment that they notice small fairy lights glowing around them, and ‘little people’ watching them. No, I don’t think they meant people with dwarfism - but the small, gnome-sized beings often mentioned in such stories.

The thing is, this isn’t the only erotic (*c-e-ringe*) encounter involving fairies.

A pair of three foot tall fairies have also been seen having similar relations of their own, but given the estimated heights of these entities, it is more likely that they were actually humans…

That being said, the heights of fairies - as with all components of their appearance - is often contested. Some say they can be the heights of leaves, or even stretch to 15 feet.

#2 - The Beastly Duo

A couple of friends were enjoying a breath of fresh air when they saw something rather peculiar on the ground.

It was grey, and it was lumpy - ‘amorphous’ as they described it. They approached slowly, convinced it was some dog or a deer perhaps. But then it changed.

It shifted into a branch, and then reformed again into two female figures. With long flowing dresses and wings on their backs, they began to laugh. And it was their laughter that was the oddest thing about this situation:

“Their laughter was felt in my whole being, [it was] like a babbling brook or rustling leaves.”

This wood-based experience is actually vital to fairy folklore - no less than 27% of modern sightings took place in the woods.

#3 - The Fairy Rave

Whilst no one - no humans, nor fairies - were having sex in this sighting, this was definitely an erotic moment, to say the least.

So, from what I can tell, some female fairies were dancing in a sexy fashion, laughing and smiling. Then, there was this odd drumming noise. It grew louder, and faster, and the dancing too grew more intense.

Then, this small ‘mudman’ (an entity made of mud, I guess) rocked up, and the fairies got really excited and were squealing…

Yeah, me neither.

#4 - The Fiery Fairies of Lanarkshire

Flaming fairies are often reported by those that claim to have witnessed the mythical creatures. In Scotland - where fairy folklore is pretty specific to the kinds of fairies they have, such as Asharays which dwell near water sources - fairies in small red dresses have been sighted. On top of this, in Mull, another area of Scotland, giant figures topping out at 12 feet tall with a burning fiery aura were seen.

This brings us to an important point about fae folk: the sightings tend to collect around specific hotspots in the UK, just like how the Scottish have their own regional types of fairies.

Cornwall, Devon, and Essex are the most popular regions for fairy sightings, but the accounts are actually spread quite evenly across the country. Here’s a map to show this diversity across the UK:

#5 - The Murder of Bridget Cleary

This is a tragic tale that we shouldn’t pin on rumours of fairies. But back in the late 19th century Ireland, many of the legal figures presiding over this case were not so sure.

In 1895, Bridget Cleary was killed by her husband. It was a clear cut case - this was murder. But what was being murdered put a question mark over the tragedy.

He claimed she had been abducted by fairies, and a changeling had been left in her place. To rid himself of this cursed being, he set his wife on fire and let her burn to death. It is believed she was alive when she was set alight.

The thing is, he wasn’t the only one convinced fairy-based mischief had taken place.

On the 13th March 1895, a physician attended her home as she was gravely ill with what was believed to be bronchitis. A priest attended to give her last rites, and visits from family and friends soon followed. A variety of home remedies were applied in attempt to either ease her suffering or change the course of events to prevent her death, but her father did something odd.

He threw urine on her, and then carries her to the fireplace. This ritual was attempted to cast a fairy he and her husband accused her of being:

They both thought a fairy had taken her place.

3 days later she went missing. The husband - having killed her at this point - claimed she had been taken by fairies. On the 22nd March her body was found in a shallow grave.

What’s interesting about this case, however, isn’t the claim that she was a fairy. It is that to this day we consider her the last witch burned in Ireland.

“Are you a witch, or are you a fairy/Or are you the wife of Michael Cleary?”

Tinkerbell might not be the best representation of women in a feminist world, but clearly she’s even worse at representing a fairy.

Dammit, Tinkerbell.

And, you know, it’s not like the rest of Peter Pan was totally not offensive to anyone…

as it pertains to BIRTH CERTIFICATE(S)/any/all contracts/treaties

(hereafter shown SPELLED as CRSS or in full, commonly referred to as "the escape clause")

In LEGAL public/international law, clausula rebus sic stantibus (Latin for "things thus standing") is the LEGAL doctrine allowing for treaties/contracts to become inapplicable, nunc pro tunc where any/ALL FRAUD revealed, renders any/all contracts NULL AND VOID, ab initio, ad infinitum, nunc pro tunc, tunc pro nunc(now for then, then for now) eliminating all TIME PERIODS relating to the contracts existence in the first place because of a fundamental change of circumstances whereas, it's illegal to use a legal name/BIRTH CERTIFICATE NAME/TITLE where the INTENT to create a FRAUDULENT THIRD PARTY is evidenced in any/all BIRTH CERTIFICATES by the very existence of the BIRTH CERTIFICATE as self-evident. CRSS is essentially and fundamentally purposed as an "escape clause" that makes an exception to the general rule of PACTA SUNT SERVANDA (promises must be kept) THUS REMOVING ALL PRIOR/PREVIOUS assumption(s) and/or presumption(s) any/all parties, legal and/or otherwise to the contrary where this fraud is revealed;

Because the doctrine poses a risk to the security (securities a.k.a. money) of treaties/contracts where those profiting from this "by design" FRAUD by exposing this INTENT TO COMMIT FRAUD and those perpetuating it as its scope, is relatively/completely unconfined/without borders, it requires strict LEGAL regulations as to the conditions in which it may be invoked where only those claiming to be LEGAL I.D.-ENTITIES within the legal reality confines are concerned, and where one is no longer deemed a LEGAL I.D.-ENTITY thereafter since this is the last LEGAL ACT, in the common sense of the definitions, of one who was formerly deceived by the LEGAL NAME/BIRTH CERTIFICATE FRAUD where it is now KNOWN to be FRAUD and where/wear/ware/we're/were the one invoking this clause no longer wishes to commit legal name fraud/any crimes against another whatsoever, while removing all traces of the former I.D.-entity from their's and everyone else's reality, regardless of the AIDING AND ABETTING attempts of/by/for/in FRAUD by various CROWN CORPORATION AGENTS to illicit/force/demand/coerce etc. et al anyone/all who have stated AND shown otherwise;

The doctrine is part of customary international law, but is also provided for in the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties under Article 62 (Fundamental Change of Circumstance), although the doctrine is never mentioned by name. Article 62 provides the only two justifications of the invocation of rebus sic stantibus: first, that the circumstances existing at the time of the conclusion of the treaty were indeed objectively essential to the obligations of treaty (sub-paragraph A) and the instance wherein the change of circumstances has had a radical effect on the obligations of the treaty (sub-paragraph B). Clausula rebus sic stantibus only relates to changed circumstances that were never contemplated by one or more of the parties, since one or more of the parties involved to initiate/force/enforce fraud after the fact such contracts/treaties is knowingly/unknowingly (ignorance is no defence) by/of/for/in omission/commission committing FRAUD WITH INTENT, regardless of claims made otherwise by any/all who are legally dead, fictional I.D.-entities/B.A.R. members/CROWN AGENT(S) etc. et al using this fraud to steal the life source of another in any way shape or form;

“ THE VEREDICT OF MICHAEL JACKSON”

“Michael Jackson's acquittal for sexual harassment to minors and related charges is completely welcome. Whether it is a sign of change of popular feelings or a more isolated episode, the decision of the jury of Santa Maria, California, to judge the singer NOT GUILTY of TEN CRIMES andFOUR MISDEMEANORS is appropriate, both from the legal and human points of view . In Contemporary America, unfortunately, rational and civil conclusions to these sordid episodes are far too infrequent.

In objective terms, the decision of the jury to acquit Jackson represent a pungent reprimand to the vengeful accusation LED by the District Attorney Of Santa Barbara, Thomas Sneddon, and supported by an ultra-right-attack-dogs. The verdict that rejects even the minors allegations, if the eight women and four men of the Jury were fully aware of the fact or not, it represents an indictment for the fraudulent and malicious character of the prosecution thesis. The Jury’s decision came in front of decisions by Judge Rodney Melville, who favored the District Attorney.

Jackson's acquittal also arises as an indictment of the dishonest role done by the American Mass Media, which have legitimized and tried to support the cause against the singer. The verdict stunned many media experts, who have done everything in their power to stigmatise and demonize Jackson in the last 18 months.

In the period immediately following the reading of the verdict, before the anchors-TV and the assorted pundits had the opportunity to bring their stories back directly, a number of television journalists admitted what none of them had admitted publicly before-that not There's never been a serious case against Jackson. However, the media approach quickly moved and tried to denigrate the meaning of the verdict, stressing the reserves of some jury members for Jackson's past behavior.

Even in this case, media managers and experts reveal their ignorance and instinctive hostility to elementary democratic principles. If the members of the jury have expressed reservations about Jackson's behavior or suspicions of bad conduct past, they did what they had to do: they listened to the evidence, discussed it between them and established that the accusation had not shown his case at Beyond Any Reasonable Doubt. The general reaction of the media to the verdict Jackson was mischievous, if not defamatory. A guest interviewed by fox news by Shepard Smith calls Jackson " the plastic monster " and claimed that " we need intelligence tests for the jurors." numerous commentators have equally asked sneddon, defender Thomas Mesereau and jurors Assorted If they don't believe a child molester has been released. Nancy Grace, the former prosecutor, who poured, every night, out reactionary poison on CNN, barely contained herself on the Jackson verdict. Grace, who has declared her believe in Jackson's guilt for months, started her program: "It's clean square in a California Court Jury, Michael Jackson issued a verdict that stunned the nation: NOT GUILTY ON ALL FRONTS ! It was a 13-year-old boy, Hispanic who brought Michael Jackson to court. And tonight, he's not guilty,because of his celebrity" Grace has been inciting a Jury member, Paul Rodriguez, defiantly asking at some point: “What do you think would have been necessary to convince the Jury that Jackson molested this guy?"

...”Debra Opri, a lawyer for Jackson's parents, finally put Nancy Grace in her place, saying : “Well, this is the bitter pill you're trying to swallow, Nancy. This is reality, not the reality you created for the last year... Michael Jackson is NOT GUILTY. Let him live his life in peace and stop trying to try the case again, ‘cause that's what you're doing !"

As noticed above, the media seized comments from a juror in particular, Raymond Hultman, in the sense that even if there weren't enough evidence to condemn Jackson of the crime he was accused of, the singer had probably acted improperly with underage boys in the past .

This exchange between the co-Conductor Katie Couric of nbc''s today show and mesereau was:

Couric: some jurors are saying that this is a verdict of guilt, not a verdict of innocence. A Juror said he believes Michael Jackson molested other children, not just this. So is this the claim that Michael Jackson's supporters think it is?

Mesereau: Yes, it is. Macaulay Culkin came and testified that he was never touched. Mr.. Robinson testified that he was never touched. Mr.. Barnes testified he was never touched. I mean, they tried to promote Michael Jackson's behavior theories that collapsed just because they weren't true.

Couric: but does it seem troubling to you,

Mesereau: I think it's total rematch.

Couric: find troubling, though, Mr. Mesereau, that a juror is saying: "I think Michael Jackson molested children or molested children first"?

Mesereau: No. I don't find it worrying because we won the cause, and we should have won the case He is innocent.

Polls record that a majority continues to believe in Jackson's guilt. But where does the audience get the information from? As Defender Barry Scheck Annotated on the today show, the audience saw the process through the prism of the media, while the jury saw it directly.

The elaborate conspiracy charged by Sneddon, that Jackson kidnapped the family of his alleged victim and plotted to send them to Brazil, was proven to be absurd. Mesereau had no difficulty showing that the family had gone shopping during their alleged captivity, including the body's waxing for the mother of the then 13-Year-old boy and orthodontics works for the second daughter and his brother. Testimony indicated that the family was "escaped" and returned to Jackson's Neverland ranch for three times, once in a rolls-Royce, but did not ask for help.

Shoplifters (2018, Japan)

Films not in the English language are difficult sells in the United States. Over the decades, there have been a few waves, false dawns, of non-English language films and filmmaking figures becoming established figures in America’s culture. In the 1950s, with its domestic cinema regaining its foothold in the aftermath of World War II, Japan gave to the West a number of acclaimed, widely-seen films. Director Yasujirô Ozu (1953′s Tokyo Story, 1959′s Floating Weeds) was not among those directors who made their names internationally in those years – despite initial attempts to distribute his films outside of Japan, he was beaten to the punch by directors whose films (unintentionally) catered to Western expectations of exoticism and Orientalist thinking. Ozu – a specialist in meditative familial dramas – has only become known outside Japan within the last few decades, thanks to the increased interconnectivity of world cinema.

This brings us to Hirokazu Koreeda, perhaps Japan’s best living filmmaker but almost unknown outside of Japan and moviegoers with access to theaters that don’t always show the newest blockbuster. Koreeda’s narrative focus is similar to but less aesthetically rigid than Ozu – his films, like Ozu’s, display little Western influence (the two most popular living Japanese directors are Hayao Miyazaki and Takashi Miike; they both are heavily influenced by Western films). With the democratization of movie availability thanks to home media and streaming, Koreeda’s reputation should be blossoming. But in the last great waves of non-English language films becoming popular in North America (the 1950s-60s and late 1990s to mid-2000s), there were nationally-trusted film critics that served as gatekeepers and arthouse/revival theaters and video stores that served as local curators to accessing these movies. The democratization of film criticism (which, yes, applies to this movie-reviewing tumblr), the retreat of arthouse/revival theaters from rural and many suburban areas in North America, and the death of video stores have narrowed the options for Koreeda and filmmakers like him to gain greater recognition across the Pacific. For one of the best films of 2018, Shoplifters has had a miniscule release.

Shoplifters is the story of the Shibata family. Though some of the family members are related, they are, in part, a closely-knit found family. Father Osamu (Lily Franky) and his “son” Shota (Kairi Jô) support the family through their shoplifting; mother Nobuyo (Sakura Andô) works at an industrial laundry; young adult Aki (Mayu Matsuoka) works at a hostess club; the elderly Hatsue (Kirin Kiki) owns the residence and fraudulently supports the family with her late husband’s pension. One night after shoplifting, Osamu and Shota encounter Yuri (Miyu Sasaki), a young girl sitting outside her parents’ residence – she appears cold, hungry. They invite her to stay with them the night, and Yuri accepts. The following night Osamu and Nobuyo intend to take Yuri home. They overhear a massive fight between her parents, with the mother’s words suggesting psychological and maybe physical abuse towards Yuri (she also exclaims, to paraphrase: “I wish I never had her”). Osamu and Nobuyo turn around with Yuri – fearful of what the parents have and might do to the girl. Yuri will be given a new name, Lin, and becomes a loved part of the Shibata household. Yet according to the letter of the law, Lin has been kidnapped. Greater troubles lie ahead for the Shibatas – threatening the lives they have built for themselves and for each other.

Going by the recent filmography of Hirokazu Koreeda – Like Father, Like Son (2013) and Our Little Sister (2015) among them – the questions that he, as sole screenwriter in addition to serving as director, poses in Shoplifters might seem simplistic with a superficial glance. What is a family? What do they do for each other? Whether you have been lucky to have come from a supportive family that has stuck together or whether you have not, you probably have some ideal of what a “family” looks like. No matter how old one may be now, this ideal probably emerged in childhood – based in what the trusted adult figures (if any) brought to one’s life. The two children in Shoplifters – Shota and Yuri/Lin – are, because of the nature of childhood, the most impressionable. How the older members of the family act will leave imprints on the children long after the end credits roll.

Yes, the Shibatas have taken Lin (who is about five years old) from her actual, biological parents – to turn her in is to risk exposing their shoplifting ways. But never in the film’s runtime do their actions raise any questions about the depth of how much they care. Where does this compassion come from? It appears that living on societal fringes has not dulled their instincts for kindness, but sharpened it. Lin is given a second chance at life as it should be lived. With the Shibatas, she never has to worry about feeling unwanted or being the cause of parental strife. For Shota, as the elder child, he fears being replaced (not to the extent that Kun feels in 2018′s Mirai, thankfully). Other than the inevitability of the film’s ending, the only other weakness that might be argued about Koreeda’s screenplay is how quickly Shota takes to Lin after his initial coldness towards her. In the closing scenes, Shota questions whether Osamu has really been the great, loving father figure he always made him out to be. Osamu’s answers to Shota’s queries are truthful – acknowledging fully what he was thinking during a fateful night, realizing the pain he might be inflicting on Shota. Ultimately Shota realizes that only he can say whether Osamu has been the father figure he claims to have been. Shota’s answer will inspire bittersweet tears.

Shoplifters, inspired by news reports about Japanese poverty and shoplifting because of the nation’s economic stagnation (ongoing since the 1990s and exacerbated by the graying of its population), premises the Shibata family in poverty and crime. Neither is romanticized or, worse, exotified. Whatever stealing Osamu and Shota engage in, it is never from individuals, but stores – their baseball-gesturing shoplifting carries no malice, existing only as a need for survival. In between the family’s time working at their jobs, the Shibatas can relax and be themselves. Take this excerpt the beach scene from the film’s second half:

Yuri/Lin and Aki play at the water’s edge, Osamu and Shota are swimming further offshore, and Nobuyo and Hatsue are enjoying lunch on the sand. Another scene with a fireworks display features a gorgeous shot of the family looking up, eyes sparkling in the blues and reds illuminating the sky. The children keep in touch with their innocence; so too the adults with their sense of wonderment and celebration. Those looking for a film teeming with self-loathing or self-pity because of the family’s poverty should prepare for disappointment. There is little self-serving dialogue making demands of others or organizations. The Shibatas’ situation is livable because of the support each family gives to another. Their home – cluttered (if we’re comparing this to what I’ve seen in Japanese films set in the 20th and 21st centuries) and without privacy – is portrayed as welcoming. As the film continues, we learn more about each member of the family. The nature of their work, their personalities, and prior histories reveal fascinating lives that cannot be defined solely by poverty and struggle.

A collection of outstanding performances by the ensemble cast helps make Shoplifters the moving film that it is. This was one of Kirin Kiki’s final films before her passing last September. In her later career, she had starred in many of Koreeda’s films and became one of the director’s best stock actors. As Hatsue, she plays a woman who has seen and done much but probably will not open herself up to tell most people about herself. There is a slight mischievous glint in the actress’ eyes, even when speaking earnestly to the fellow family members. And by her final appearance, Kiki shows us someone slowly fading away, on her terms. The other adult actors – Lily Franky, Sakura Andô, and Mayu Matsuoka – have their own challenging moments. Matsuoka (as Aki) has, contextually, the film’s most awkward scenario (have this film written by almost all other writers, and it’s a disaster), but she performs the moment in the most natural way possible. Franky (as Osamu) and Andô (as Nobuyo) are inseparable from Kairi (as Shota) and Sasaki (as Yuri/Lin), respectively. The beauty of their performances is intertwined with the child actors opposite them – expressing joy, abandonment, sorrow, and forgiveness.

The spirit of Yasujirô Ozu can not only be found in the themes present in Shoplifters, but in its cinematography by Ryûto Kondô (who has a sizeable filmography, but none of his films appear to have made a dent outside of Japan). Kondô’s camerawork during one-on-one conversations – specifically in the concluding passages – recalls how Ozu and his cinematographers (Yûharu Atsuta especially) often placed the camera in between the two figures speaking, obliterating the 180º rule, and making these moments feel documented, rather than staged. There are many long takes across Shoplifters, but never does the film feel too languid. Koreeda and Kondô have figured out how to shoot their film economically and expressively – something that few director-cinematographer combinations can ever combine effectively.

While researching for Shoplifters, Koreeda visited an orphanage. There, he encountered a young girl who had the picture book Swimmy by Leo Lionni (a Caldecott Honor winner) in hand. Says Koreeda in an interview:

The staff tried to stop her, telling her she was bothering us, but she read it to the end. Everyone, including the staff, was moved and applauded her. She looked so happy. I thought she really wanted to read that book to her parents. I couldn’t get her out of my head and wrote a scene reflecting that moment.

In the same interview, Koreeda said that Shoplifters was made for the girl he met that day.

Hirokazu Koreeda has been working towards Shoplifters for the entirety of his distinguished career. Once again, he has cemented himself as one of cinema’s greatest humanists – among the living and of all-time. In a time when English-speaking audiences seem unknowledgeable, maybe even hostile to, films in another language, there just so happens to be another non-English-language film that has been grabbing the headlines for the end of 2018 in Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma (not that I am complaining). Such is Koreeda’s luck once again; perhaps his timing will work out to his benefit some other year. But most importantly, Koreeda is making films presenting questions of familial love and the meaning of family itself in ways that few filmmakers can. For Shoplifters, the answers provided to those questions are incomplete, left for audiences to contemplate for themselves, in respect to wherever they may be in life.

After they murdered Dan, they took his blood-soaked boxers (from the heretics of the “Dragon” cult in the book of Revelations severing his penis) and dirty socks (from being set “free” to run away from the murderers, unbeknownst to him he was in a salt mine the size of the city it is beneath, so every attempt to find an exit was met with a dead end.... after collapsing from exhaustion, the sadistic torturers dragged him back to the gurney when heretic/warlock “doctors” and “nurses” continued to dismember him while keeping him alive the whole time) and kidnapped some random kid from Southwest Detroit. They forced the kid into Dan’s dirty & blood-soaked socks & boxers, cut off his hands, gouged his eyes out, cut his tongue out & cut his hands off & proceeded to re-create a scene that would depict how the original photo came to be/the origin of the leaked photo of a man on a gurney being bandaged up after what was obviously torture rather than an accident, but what people don’t realize are the “hospital staff” bandaging him up are also the killers, they keep people alive for as long as they possibly can and carry out days.... weeks.... months.... even years long torture and because the killers are constantly disassociated from their own bodies if they are not torturing someone to death in, the Angelic souls of their murder victims are forced to manifest OVER the body of the heretic and “babysit” their empty/soulless/worthless vessel and keep it healthy and raise it’s children and even go to school/college/have a career for the heretic, who will only return to their body using a victim that is now an Angel for transport (at light speed by the way, because the multidimensional, both physical and metaphysical body of the Angel can carry the heretics tiny, parasitic, devolved soul around like they are a chauffeuring broomstick/spaceship/airplane/horsey with wings.) to engage in depraved acts or indulge in the luxuries like driving nice sports cars or shopping at high-end stores made possible by all the money their stay-at-home broomstick/Angel made for them while they were out growing cancer in your kid all day while having “wargasms” from within the child’s body with their diseased pathetic souls that are condemned for all eternity so what is the HOLDUP with moving in on these MOTHERFUCKERS already.

The Thompson-controlled media of course wrote up a fake news article once the original pictures were released, this time claiming the crime they were covering the story of took place in Bolivia (they do this every time photos/videos are leaked, the cult members wear the bodies of Angels and Demons over their own bodies and the Angels will speak in a foreign language so the killings look like they are taking place in other parts of the world rather than Detroit, MI where the “SALT MINE” that makes Nazi Concentration camps look like summer camps is located. There was a clue in an article that said the victim was kidnapped in or/around a Bolivian mine, but due to the captors wearing Angels as veils speaking in a different language, nobody could put it all together enough to see that the “mine” was a reference to the salt mine in Detroit.) The differences between the two victims is pronounced, they just don’t have the same body shape, skin tone, but most notably Dan didn’t have any tattoos and the man in the picture has one on his arm. (a tattoo not present in the “hospital” photo, which is actually the original photo of the first victim who is Dan Riebesehl, being held captive in a salt mine 1200 feet below the ground in Detroit. I personally don’t believe the mineshaft entrance is big enough for mass salt mining, and that even if a portion of the mine was once used for salt mining, the mining was abandoned many years ago and the website currently active for the “company” that “owns” the mine is all a fraudulent cover for the genocidal criminal activity that has been going on for over a century.

Time to recognize your own divinity, the value of HUMAN LIFE, the severity of this, and take action - people have not been using their platforms to reach large audiences correctly, dealing with threats and harassment from a group of unrelenting psychopathic cult scumfucks that will kill you using black magic, and because they were the ONLY group of people on earth that had the ability to use black magic, the heretics in Thompson’s family found they were able to murder people while their souls were in their own bodies too, so they can kill you while disassociated from their bodies and in their bodies and the police NEVER ARREST THEM. Can Biden Reverse Trump’s Damage to the State Department?

Reeling from the leadership of Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo, career officials wonder whether Secretary of State Antony Blinken can revitalize American diplomacy.

Last year, in the early hours of October 27th, Philip Walton, an American citizen living and working as a farmer in southern Niger, was kidnapped in front of his family by armed mercenaries. The militants demanded a million-dollar ransom from Walton’s family and threatened to sell the American to local extremist groups. As Walton’s captors smuggled him across the border into northern Nigeria, Navy seals planned a rescue operation. Several days later, as the seals stood ready to conduct the raid, then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was on a government plane, flying back to the United States after travelling in Asia. A State Department staffer entered Pompeo’s cabin and updated the secretary on Walton’s case. The staffer outlined the steps that Pompeo would need to take to facilitate the exfiltration, including a call to the President of Niger.

To the surprise of his aides, Pompeo pushed back on the staffer’s requests. Pompeo grew visibly annoyed with the request that he make the phone calls, eventually replying, “When am I going to sleep?” The staffer told Pompeo that the American citizen being held was unlikely to be sleeping much. At the end of the discussion, Pompeo agreed to make the necessary calls. On the morning of October 31st, the seals parachuted from an Air Force Special Operations Command plane and rescued Walton, killing six of his kidnappers. Donald Trump and Pompeo later boasted about the operation on Twitter, where Pompeo called it “outstanding.” Staffers said the tweet was one of multiple instances when Pompeo appeared to use his position to boost his or Trump’s political fortunes.

Aides who worked under Pompeo said the exchange regarding the raid typified a leadership style that included brusque treatment of personnel and an intense focus on partisan politics that sometimes hampered the day-to-day business of the State Department. In interviews, dozens of other department employees alleged that Pompeo’s chaotic tenure, and that of his predecessor, Rex Tillerson, left deep institutional and cultural scars that continue to impede American diplomatic efforts around the world.

During the Trump Administration, a hiring freeze, radical proposals to cut the State Department’s budget, and an unprecedented number of vacancies in pivotal roles undercut the institution’s capacity to conduct diplomacy. In an interview before taking office as the current Secretary of State, Antony Blinken warned that the departure of so many career diplomats had deeply damaged the department. That “penalizes you in all sorts of ways that will go on for generations, not just for a bunch of years,” Blinken told me. Absent a more robust department, he said, “We’re going to get into all kinds of conflicts we might have avoided through development, through diplomacy.”

State Department officials told me that the Biden Administration is acting too slowly to reverse the effects of the purge. Some said that they feared that Blinken and other Administration officials, eager to distance themselves from the reckless decision-making of the Trump era, have been hesitant to make bold policy decisions. “Things aren’t moving forward,” one career diplomat, who works with Blinken and asked not to be named, told me. “There’s starting to be some chatter around the building about, you know, let’s do the hard work. And I’m not sure that these folks are prepared at this point to do that.”

The initial wave of Trump-era damage was wrought by Rex Tillerson, who championed budget cuts of proportions not seen since the first Clinton Administration, which advocated for a downsizing of the department in the name of a post-Cold War focus on domestic priorities. Pompeo, a Republican who had served as a congressman from Kansas and as Trump’s C.I.A. director, promised to restore the institution’s “swagger.” He had little by way of diplomatic experience, but was politically savvier than Tillerson—and, ultimately, more adept at surviving under a mercurial President. An evangelical Christian from Orange, California, Pompeo graduated first in his class at West Point and served in the U.S. Army’s 4th Infantry Division. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he moved to Kansas to start an aerospace business, with investment from the Kochs’ venture-capital fund. He successfully ran for Congress amid the Tea Party wave, in 2010, again with Koch backing. Pompeo’s tenure as C.I.A. director was brief, just fifteen months, but he gained a reputation for being sharp-elbowed there as well, discarding the standing precedent of serving as an apolitical director and instead cultivating unusually close ties to Trump, sometimes even accompanying the President to meetings that were unrelated to intelligence. Pompeo echoed some of Trump’s hard-line foreign-policy views. When the President issued pugnacious calls to dismantle the Iran nuclear deal, Pompeo did so, too. And he appeared to internalize some of the lessons cited by White House officials about playing to Trump’s ego. The President, Pompeo declared during his tenure as C.I.A. director, “asks good, hard questions.”

After arriving at the State Department, Pompeo lifted the hiring freeze enacted by Tillerson but then isolated himself from the staff, in what seemed to some officers to be a deliberate show of mistrust. “Tillerson’s problem was function, Pompeo’s was deliberate,” one Foreign Service officer who worked closely with Pompeo told me. “There was never really any input from the field. There was less input from the building.” The new Secretary of State, several staffers said, treated them harshly. “He did a lot of screaming in private,” the Foreign Service officer added. “Pompeo was a dick, that I would agree on,” another senior official who worked closely with Pompeo told me. At times, his outbursts were directed to foreign interlocutors, including one prominent European foreign minister.

By the end of the Trump Administration, morale in the department had collapsed. Pompeo had lost the confidence of his staff, some of whom believed that he was preoccupied with a potential Presidential run and was playing to his conservative political base. Several cited his repeated refusals to sign off on even perfunctory commitments to diversity, at a time when Black and Hispanic diplomats each comprised just eight per cent of Foreign Service officers. Allegations of corruption surrounded him as well. The House Foreign Affairs Committee moved to hold Pompeo in contempt for refusing to comply with multiple subpoenas. The State Department inspector general’s office disclosed the existence of five different investigations into State Department activities, including at least two that directly involved Pompeo.

One investigation focussed on his use of subordinates to run personal errands for him and his wife, such as picking up dry cleaning and walking their dog. After Steve Linick, the department’s inspector general, began examining the Secretary’s conduct, a Pompeo ally dismissed him. Linick, a career public servant, was abruptly placed on administrative leave and locked out of his office. He later told a congressional committee that he was given no explanation for the removal. (In April, the State Department’s Office of Inspector General concluded that Pompeo had violated the department’s ethics rules, but noted that he is no longer subject to penalties because he has left the government.)

After Trump’s loss, last November, staffers’ concerns about Pompeo’s political activities increased. As Trump rejected the election results, Pompeo’s State Department impeded the transition process. Messages from foreign leaders to President-elect Joe Biden piled up, as Pompeo declined to observe protocol and release them. In the department’s press briefing room, Pompeo told reporters, “There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump Administration.” No one was sure whether he was joking. Pompeo seemed irritated at follow-up questions, saying that “every legal vote” had to be counted, an adage used by Trump allies claiming, falsely, that the election results were fraudulent.

As Pompeo set out on a post-election international trip, last November, his refusal to acknowledge the balloting results cast a shadow over his diplomacy. E.U. officials declined to meet with him, prompting Pompeo to cancel some stops. As he visited Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Georgia, where the United States has encouraged electoral transparency, career Foreign Service officers wondered what moral authority their country still carried on the subject. After he learned that plans for a routine transition meeting with his successor, Blinken, had leaked to the press, Pompeo cancelled it. Although the meeting later took place, Foreign Service officers who worked with Pompeo were dismayed by the apparent prioritization of politics over an orderly transition. “He didn’t want to be seen as doing his job,” one told me.

During the same period, Pompeo was posting political messages on Twitter. The messages were reposted to an account in Pompeo’s name, with more than a hundred thousand followers, on Telegram, where a far-right audience, shunned by some mainstream platforms, had congregated. (A spokesperson for Pompeo said that Pompeo was unaware of the Telegram account.) His posts often focussed on domestic issues, including criticism of news outlets, and featured political slogans like “#AmericansFirst” and “#SoMuchWinning.” In one message, from January, Pompeo told his followers, “America is a land of many freedoms - it’s what makes us the best country in the world. Even after I leave office, I will continue to do all I can to secure those freedoms. Follow me @mikepompeo and join me.”

After Pompeo and Trump left office, the State Department was riddled with vacancies. More than a third of all Assistant Secretary or Under-Secretary positions—the organization’s top leadership—were empty or filled by temporary, “acting” officials. For more than half of the Trump years, the senior position responsible for nonproliferation and arms control, including confronting nuclear threats from North Korea, had been vacant or led by an acting appointee. Diversity among senior staff had dwindled, and the department’s workforce was overwhelmingly white, with just thirteen per cent of the senior executive service roles filled by individuals of color. Concerns about a lack of diversity in the department’s workforce predate the Trump Administration, but recent employee surveys showed growing frustration with the department’s failure to address the problem.

Today, the staffing challenges persist. Five months after taking office, the Biden Administration has filled numerous senior roles, but the State Department still employs slightly fewer Foreign Service officers than at the conclusion of the Trump Administration. And diversity has yet to improve, according to figures published in March.

The Trump Administration also left behind a culture of suspicion. “There’s this mistrust of career officers,” Blinken told me, of his predecessor’s era. A 2019 State Department inspector-general investigation found that Trump’s political appointees had retaliated against career employees who typically serve under Administrations of both parties. Those employees, who carry much of the department’s institutional memory, were pilloried as “disloyal” or “traitors,” part of a shadowy and allegedly liberal “deep state.” Pompeo defended Trump’s habit of praising authoritarian leaders—a practice that diplomats told me was generally not part of any wider diplomatic strategy. Trump extended White House invitations to the Egyptian autocrat Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who was presiding over a brutal human-rights crackdown, and the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, who has admitted to murdering opponents and had encouraged his troops to rape women. Echoing Trump, Pompeo praised Sisi’s approach to religious freedom and, according to a Philippine spokesperson, told Duterte that he was “just like our President.”

Numerous diplomats acknowledged what they described as unprecedented challenges ahead for the State Department. “There’s a real corrosion of the sense of American leadership in the world and the institutions that make that leadership real,” William Burns, President Biden’s current C.I.A. director and a former Deputy Secretary of State, told me before taking office. “Diplomacy really ought to be the tool of first resort internationally. It can sometimes achieve things at far less cost, both financially and in terms of American lives, than the use of the military can.” Several staffers praised Biden for pledging, on the campaign trail, to empower diplomats, and for embracing diversity initiatives that Pompeo had shunned. “They’re saying all the right things about diversity, they’re doing all the right things about affinity groups,” one official told me. But many diplomats said that there had been little visible progress on these issues. They wondered whether Biden, an establishment figure, was the right President to confront them at a time that they believe merits a radical course correction.

Biden ran on promises to reverse his predecessor’s embrace of dictators. “No more blank checks for Trump’s ‘favorite dictator,’ ” Biden tweeted during the 2020 campaign, referring to Sisi, in Egypt. But in his long career in Washington, Biden often championed such relationships. As chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he had presided over the rubber-stamping of unfettered military aid to the Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak. As Vice-President, he was one of Mubarak’s last supporters in Washington, saying, two weeks before Mubarak was unseated, in 2011, that he was not a dictator and didn’t need to leave office. Blinken told me that the subject had been a focus of fierce debate within the Obama Administration. “There were some folks who wanted us to much more forcefully defend Mubarak,” Blinken said. “And others suggested that, as one said, we needed to be on the right side of history.” The dispute had been “more generational than anything else,” he added, with a group of younger officials, including the current U.S.A.I.D. administrator, Samantha Power, arguing against “some of the older, more seasoned hands, who had, after all, been dealing with the relationship with Egypt for years,” including “[Robert] Gates, Hillary [Clinton], Biden,” who defended Mubarak. Blinken said that loyalty to Mubarak had been a mistake. “Yeah, maybe we were caught flat-footed in Egypt,” he told me.

Several diplomats said that the Biden Administration, in an effort to strike a different tone than that of Tillerson, Pompeo, and Trump, is being too cautious. “These new folks are doing their best to be not-the-last-folks,” the career diplomat who works with Blinken said. “That’s great in some ways, and, in some ways, it’s sort of keeping them from finding their groove. Sometimes there are tough decisions to make. And if the last folks made that decision, they’re trying not to do it.” As an example, the diplomat cited conversations about the extent of the United States’ ongoing presence in Iraq, which have, several staffers said, largely stalled since Biden took office. The diplomat added, “We can’t get a rhythm until we stop trying to be the anti-Trump, anti-Pompeo people.” (A State Department spokesperson told me, “We’re not going to make apologies for running a process that is inclusive and appropriately deliberative,” a reference to consultations with offices across the State Department and the wider government. “You can’t have an inclusive process and expect dramatic shifts, in every single realm, in a hundred and fifty days.”)

William Taylor, an Ambassador who testified during Trump’s first impeachment, said that rebuilding the Department’s battered workforce would be difficult. “They’ve seen things that have bothered them, that have disturbed them, that have shaken their faith in this institution they have been serving in. And a whole lot of people have left the Foreign Service,” Taylor told me. “It’s a real loss. They’ve left a hole, a vacuum.” But Taylor and other veterans of the State Department expressed optimism that American diplomacy could be revitalized. “Damage has been done. But there are smart people, good people,” Taylor said. “If we get good leadership and reëstablish trust and transparency, they’ll go back.”
