MWW Artwork of the Day (10/7/24) Franz Roubaud (Ukrainian, 1856-1928) A Tale of the Caucasus (1907) Oil on canvas, 142.8 x 197.2 cm. Private Collection
"A Tale of the Caucasus" is a mature work, demonstrating Roubaud’s stagecraft and ability to charge a canvas with palpable real-life drama. Enter stage left a fleeing horseman, pursued by determined riders. The scene has a cinematic quality; the tonal harmony of the palette provides a perfect backdrop to the superbly observed horse as it strains to gallop faster and the excitement, fear even, of the horseman who flees for his life.

7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
i'm very fond of oil paintings (traditional painting in general really) but i've only done it maybe once or twice. i take a lot of inspiration from stuff like this:
(in order of appearance: mitrofan grekov, ilya repin, franz roubaud, giuseppe da volpedo, beth edwards, john singer sargent)
and zetterstrand of course:
also, sculpture!!!!!! i have done some sculpture but it's not my main thing at all.
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
OH GOD SO MANY. many original projects and characters over the years that never turned into anything. i've realized over time that i'm someone who mostly prefers doing fanart over original stuff, i like to be in conversation with something. so it's hard for me to stick with original projects... here are some highlights from my character graveyard though, some of these are 5+ years old
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
ARMOR if that counts. otherwise it's hard to choose! i love drawing clothing in general! i find stuff like this or this really relaxing to do
14. Any favorite motifs
such an open ended question... light and shadow, but that's maybe too broad. all birds really but especially great egrets. i'm big on the sword of damocles, in this piece i did for a college art class i was trying to do a sword of damocles thing, except instead of a sword it's a piece of mining equipment, which definitely does not come across unless you're in my brain, but it has the same feeling of "something hanging by a thread" or "something about to collapse." swords in general! literal motifs in the sense of recurring patterns. human-animal transformation in a swan maiden sort of way. people stabbing themselves or each other... my pockets are full of motifs
15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth)
mostly just at my desk. if i'm working in a sketchbook kind of anywhere, i've drawn in the bathtub before (living dangerously)
