Reposted from @soundrotation The historic erasure of Black cultural spaces is violence. #TheWarehouse, the #birthplaceofHouseMusic, is at risk of being demolished, continuing the destruction of major monuments celebrating the legacies of the contributions of Black and Brown communities to contemporary culture.

As stewards of the #FrankieKnucklesCollection at #theArtsBank, in partnership with @frankieknucklesfoundation, and as a one of the few sites of tribute to the Godfather of House Music's impact, we at @rebuildfoundation urgently call upon our community to recognize and protect the sacred value and spiritual weight that spaces like the Warehouse hold.

House Music is more than a sound; it is a movement born out of the need for spaces for freedom and expression. It was born at The Warehouse. The Warehouse was sanctuary, it is safe haven, and it continues to symbolize a space of liberation for Chicago's #LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly those who were persecuted for their gender-identity, sexuality and race.

The Warehouse opened its doors in 1975 under the vision of owner Robert Williams. The space was reimagined as an anchoring point in liberatory sound and spiritual release, a refuge from the violence and discrimination inflicted upon the Black queer community. With Knuckles behind the turntables, the Warehouse became a vibrant and beloved space with a unique sound that forged a harmony between soul, R&B, disco, electronic, and gospel.

Though the birthplace of House Music, the Warehouse does not have protections against demolition for new construction, which have become commonplace in the neighboring areas. The building was sold in December 2022 and the plans for the building’s future remain unknown.

We must recognize and take urgent steps to protect The Warehouse and preserve its historic and cultural significance as a Chicago Landmark. Please sign the petition in the link in my bio and reach out to your elected officials to acknowledge The Warehouse with the Chicago Landmark Designation that would fully protect the site from destruction and preserve this monument to House Music.
