I found this in my drafts so enjoy my bitching about the absolute shitshow my first intercontinental flight turned into.
Travelers: smolsleepyfox + mother who doesn't speak a lot of English
The inbound journey: train to Frankfurt > flight to LA (Condor) > ~two hours transit time > flight to Honolulu (Hawaiian)
Estimated travel time: 24 hours
What actually happened: The ICE was late, of course, but we had more than enough buffer regardless. The plane was announced as 45 minutes delayed due to a delayed arrival. Okay, not fun, but doable.
We eventually started with a delay of 1h 40. Refer to the transit time stated above.
The flight itself was cool, I really liked the 3D earth model with our route showing all sorts of background info on sights we were passing. I saw Iceland and the Faroe islands for the first time, and some of Greenland, the Great Salt Lake and Nevada. (Why is the US so big and empty in the middle, it was kind of freaky??)
Anyway. We arrived with a delay of 1h 20 and hastened to get to the connection. As travellers entering the country we had to get our bags and then check them in again when we were connecting, so we did just that.
Mistake.
Because when we made it to the check-in counter of Hawaiian Airlines they told us we'd been rebooked to a different flight with an entirely different airline. At 7am the next day.
Apparently Condor thought we wouldn't make the connection and changed our booking. The very sweet lady at the counter wrote down the flight number for the new booking, and recommended we go ask our original airline to get us a hotel because by that time it was 7pm and we'd been up for about 24 hours.
Guess who does not work anymore at 7pm?
If you guessed Condor's customer service desk, you get a point. What followed should be familiar to people who watched Asterix conquers Rome. I probably spoke to everyone wearing some sort of uniform in the entire building. Turns out social anxiety is only a problem until your stress level hits the roof. And after all of that didn't even work, we got a SMS with a hotel booking and food vouchers.
Note that by that point, we'd been running around for nearly three hours and there's still no information the new flight booking even exists. We have no boarding passes, not even an email saying we got rebooked in the first place, just a hand-written flight number.
To be fair the hotel was extremely nice. There even was a pool in the courtyard - which we couldn't use because as I mentioned we'd checked in our luggage. We didn't even have a toothbrush. Regardless, half of the vouchers were spent on dinner that I thought was stupid expensive (but hey not my money!).
Next morning while waiting in line to get our boarding passes I talked to a dude from Cincinnati checking in a very friendly black Labrador Retriever. I told him I'd love to see the Great Lakes sometime and he said he has a friend who went to Germany with his athletics team and it sounded very fun. I told him we have a lot of big funky churches and he seemed to appreciate it. We also spent the other half of the vouchers on Starbucks.
We did make it to Honolulu airport. Our bags did not. The day before, they'd told us that they'd either transfer our luggage to the new airline, or they'd just put it on their flight to Honolulu that leaves the same time. We waited at the baggage claim for our flight. The conveyor belt was blocked by a large box for like ten minutes. No luggage. We have no flight number for the other Hawaiian flight and none of the screens even show that that plane exists, let alone is supposed to arrive in the span of the next two hours.
After asking five different people and my mom running off on her own, we manage to get to Hawaiian's baggage service desk and one of the crew wanders off with our receipts to take a look. He returns after 30 minutes with a cart. I didn't ask where the hell he found our stuff. He was probably a wizard.
We still don't have a confirmation we ever got rebooked.
---
This is where I left off, thinking we'd finished the Odyssey. Guess the fuck what! We had not!
We spent a lovely two weeks on O'ahu of which I was sick for most of the first (I blame the AC). Our flight back was at 7.25am.
The plan was for us to go to LA together, where I'd put my mom on a flight back (Condor again) and for me to spend two more weeks in LA. We arrived around 5am because we're German and that's the bare minimum of buffer. Online check-in somehow didn't work for the Honolulu-LA leg but did work for the LA-Frankfurt leg. So we get to the airport, try the kiosks. No luck there either. Go to the customer service counter.
The poor man took about five minutes looking between his PC and our passports before telling us he had to check something and wandering off for a solid twenty minutes. That can't be a good sign.
He returns. My mom's ticket doesn't exist.
What do you mean her ticket doesn't exist, I ask, wondering if I've lost the ability to speak English.
Apparently when Condor rebooked us on the inbound flight, they accidentally canceled both Hawaiian airlines reservations for my mom. So now we have an hour left and my mom doesn't have a ticket and a flight to catch.
Booking another ticket for this specific flight is 2800$ - even if we were willing to pay that (we were not) that is very much above my credit card's limit. The man, who clearly feels bad for us, advises me to call Condor directly.
I genuinely don't want to think about how much money I paid calling the hotline. The entire thing was a disaster - I have auditory processing disorder, it was loud as fuck in the airport and the man on the other end had an accent. At first I gave him the wrong booking number (mine instead of my mom's), then he misunderstood and thought our inbound flights were with Lufthansa so Not His Job. He eventually promised to reinstate the ticket so we should wait a few minutes and return to the check-in. At check-in the tickets did not show up, so I call them back and ask for the ticket numbers to double-check.
Having a pacing man at the airport yell into his phone in German probably fulfills some kind of stereotype.
We went outside so my mom could have a smoke break and I avoided having a meltdown with the help of a soggy Nutella bread, since I hadn't even had breakfast at that point.
At this point, we've missed our flight, meaning my ticket has lost its validity as well. Stakes are high.
The few minutes were apparently enough for the system to catch up though, because when we got back to the check in counter, a very nice lady told us that while it wasn't Hawaiian Airlines' responsibility, they offered a complementary rebooking to a later flight. They wouldn't be able to guarantee we got on if it was full, but chances were good. Very stressful 40 minutes until we were called up by a guy my age who apologized for not knowing how to pronounce our last name.
But wait - my mom had a flight to catch. The stopover time by that point had shrunken to an hour... And our plane was delayed. In all fairness, the cabin crew was lovely, they offered all passengers with connecting flights to get off the plane first, just grab our stuff and run. Which is what we did, running up to the gate and asking if boarding is still ongoing like we were being chased by the mob. This flight was also delayed and I think the stewardess was concerned for us.
But hey, at least my mom made it home. Just to put the cherry on top though, my mom's luggage arrived in Germany five days later.
My own flight from LA to Frankfurt was luckily completely unremarkable. Never again.
#foxy speaks#just to be clear i yelled because it was loud I'm not intentionally rude to customer service workers#also by european law we're entitled to compensation so still waiting for that yay :/#foxy foibles

I don't care enough about this to make my own poll(s), but I feel that worst airports poll should have been separated into Worst Airports for Arrivals, Worst Airports for Departures, and Worst Airports for Connections, because these are all very different things. Like, I voted for LAX because the Arrivals experience sucks so much ass, and also because it's pretty hideous and the traffic situation is awful. But tbh I've never really had any problems with domestic or international departures from LAX. Like, you can get dropped off at your terminal, and from there it's pretty straightforward, and I've never spent more than 20 minutes or so getting through security. I've never had delays of more than an hour or so there either.
Arrivals though...UGH. Just a heinous experience all around. Total fuckin' chaos once you exit the terminal and attempt to figure out where the fuck you should go, if you're not being picked up by someone, and if you ARE being picked up by someone, still stressful thanks to the traffic and the exhaust fumes. If you're using rideshare, you either need to walk your ass to the whole separate parking lot for rideshare, or take the shuttle. There's multiple shuttles and buses for cheaper public transport but since the Metro extension isn't finished yet, the many options are confusing. Godspeed if you've parked in another parking lot: you will have to navigate the confusing signage to figure out where the hell your shuttle pick up spot is. If you parked in the economy lot, they helpfully tell you to follow the pink signs, however, MULTIPLE shuttles use these stops so you have to make sure you're getting on the right bus. The whole experience manages to feel grimy too. And of course, the horseshoe layout means that if you miss an exit/stop, you will have to ride ALL THE WAY AROUND again.
Literally the worst arrivals experience. Especially compared to all the European airports I've been to where the arrivals experience is basically less than 30 mins at customs, baggage claim, then walk right out to an easy to spot taxi stand or the airport transfer guy holding up a sign with my name on it.
Also, a special fuck you to Frankfurt for its particular awfulness for connections! The closest I have ever come to missing a flight is thanks to Frankfurt having TWO people at customs, for a line of HUNDREDS, and only after an increasingly stressful 30-40 minutes of waiting in that line, did someone finally bother to be like, "so hey, whose connecting flight is leaving basically now?" and skip us to a separate, shorter line, after which we had to RUN to make it to our gate, which was naturally ALL THE WAY AT THE OTHER END OF THE AIRPORT, and we arrived on the plane wheezing and sweaty, mere minutes before they closed the gate and departed. That flight was AT LEAST a third empty, presumably because so many other people did not make it through Frankfurt's gamut of trials.
Istanbul Airport can also be terrible for connections because it is ENORMOUS but tbf if you're flying Turkish Air they will help you out with fast lanes and such through customs, though they also had the MOST bafflingly thorough security at the gate. Like, AFTER customs and security to get to the right terminal, there was a whole new round of security at the gate itself, which involved another passport and boarding pass check, and then OPENING UP OUR CARRYONS for physical inspection by security people. No idea if this is normal for flights going to the US there, it did not happen the first time I flew from Istanbul back to the US.
Shoutout to connecting through Dublin though: even this past weekend when we were stuck on the plane for 40 mins because of a problem with the airbridge, we still made our connecting flight with a few minutes to spare thanks to all Aer Lingus flights flying out of Terminal 2 and USA preclearance being speedy and straightforward.
My favorite airport remains ONT though. So small, so calm, so usually (comparatively) empty. A very chill arrivals and departure experience. Not many great food options though iirc. Alas I do not fly into or out of it anymore now that I live in LA. I live less than 30 mins from LAX, so even though it sucks, I always fly into and out of it now.

post-bourgeois transcendence
I was traveling back from Scandinavia through Frankfurt and it was at the airport that I was having a meal in the nearly empty restaurant ( there were only a few other customers) whilst waiting for the flight back to London. I had eaten breakfast in the hotel in Stockholm in the morning, but after the late morning meeting had traveled to the airport and failed to eat lunch because of all the rapid transfers from metro to train to plane. Here though in Frankfurt waiting for the next flight, I found that I had an enormous appetite and so was sitting at a table eating steak and frites, some salad and a Damson sorbet. On the table was a small glass vase with a small selection of flowers. Why would you put a vase of flowers on this small table I wondered for a moment, but the answer was obvious they dreamed of working in a city restaurant and were practicing. That was the boring everyday conclusion i came to. In the early evening I was drinking coffee and watching the planes taxi to the runway and take off. An hour long video call watching the planes over the screen. To see the world from an airport terminus is not merely to see it from afar but also to see it differently. Through the sheets of glass across the surface details of concrete, grass, terminals and satellite terminals, enormous hangers… the planes wait, the crew wait, the passengers wait, the freight waits. The airport spreads to the horizon, a housing estate. A man is skinning a small deer hanging from a tree in a garden, he is naked beneath his butchers apron. To leave this place and return home is pleasure. People are walking around loading luggage and cargo onto planes. They are working in the airport. .. The flight is called. I’m sitting ten rows back from the entrance, in front of it beyond the flight attendants working area is the business class seating. The doors gave duct tape over the cracked plastic. The plane taxis around on the runways and then with creams and roars rakes off. i can hear the wheels being stored. Ten minutes after taking off a woman nine rows in front of me starts groaning… They ask if anyone has medical skills, an accident and emergency sister from a London hospital, takes control. The medical kit is rusted shut. The flight staff are visibly relieved that the sister… After five minutes she tells them that the woman needs hospital immediately. Ten minutes later they tell us the plane will be landing at South Thalia, a small airport on the coast. Lights, ambulances, we disembark as they clean and disinfect the area around the seats… In the cafeteria they open especially for the flight, inside the airport, more duct tape, plastic chairs, its a clear night with a full moon. I wash my face and leave the airport, my phone and take a bus into the adjacent town…

IranAir diverts flights to Istanbul to avoid EU sanctions
IranAir introduced a daily diversion between Tehran and Istanbul to fulfil its pre-booking obligations for flights to the EU, UK and Turkey, according to Arab media.
The move will provide an alternative to passengers affected by the airline’s suspension of all European routes under a yet-to-be-announced codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines from their hub at Istanbul Airport.
The Turkish carrier would catch the flights that IranAir lost when passengers were transferred to London, Frankfurt and Paris. IranAir spokesperson Hessam Qorbanali said the daily service aimed to ease concerns of travellers affected by the EU sanctions and to ensure continuous links to Europe.
Alireza Manzari, Iran’s former representative to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), stated that sanctions raised the cost of travel significantly. Flights to Europe became at least 30 per cent more expensive due to the lack of direct flights, resulting in the need for more expensive connecting flights, Manzari added.
IranAir suspended its European flights on 15 October following EU sanctions imposed on IranAir, Mahan Air and Saha Airlines. The sanctions caused logistical difficulties, including the refusal of European airports to refuel Iranian aircraft, forcing the carriers to make costly adjustments.
Maqsoud Asadi Samani, Secretary of the Association of Iranian Airlines, said IranAir was the last domestic carrier to offer services to Europe before the suspension took effect.

Stress-Free Travel: Your Ultimate Guide to Frankfurt Airport Transfers
Navigating through Frankfurt Airport can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the city or have a tight schedule. Whether you’re arriving for business or leisure, securing a smooth and reliable transfer is crucial to kick-start your visit on the right foot. This guide will walk you through the options for Frankfurt Airport transfers, including private transfers and sightseeing tours, ensuring that you make the most of your time in Frankfurt.
Frankfurt Airport Transfer: What You Need to Know
Frankfurt Airport is one of the busiest transport hubs in Europe, serving millions of passengers each year. With its expansive layout and numerous terminals, getting from the airport to your destination can seem daunting. Fortunately, there are several efficient options to streamline your journey:
Airport Taxi Services: A convenient choice for many travelers is to use a taxi service directly from the airport. Taxis are readily available at designated stands outside the terminals. While this option offers door-to-door service, it can be pricey, especially during peak hours or if you’re traveling a long distance.
Public Transportation: Frankfurt boasts an extensive public transportation network including trains, buses, and trams. The airport is well-connected by the S-Bahn (suburban trains) which can quickly whisk you into the city center. Though cost-effective, this method requires navigating public transit schedules and transfers, which might not be ideal if you’re carrying heavy luggage or traveling with family.
Private Transfers: For a more personalized experience, private transfers are an excellent choice. This option provides comfort and convenience, with a professional driver waiting to meet you upon arrival. Private transfers are ideal if you want a stress-free ride to your accommodation or any other destination within Frankfurt. You can also arrange for a private transfer to meet you at the airport for an immediate departure to your next destination.
Frankfurt Sightseeing Tours: Explore the City in Style
Once you’ve settled in, consider exploring Frankfurt with a sightseeing tour to maximize your experience. A well-organized sightseeing tour can provide you with a comprehensive overview of the city’s highlights, saving you the hassle of planning your own itinerary. Here’s what you can expect:
Classic City Tours: Many tours cover major landmarks such as Römer Square, St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, and the Goethe House. These tours typically last several hours and offer insights into Frankfurt’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Themed Tours: If you have specific interests, themed tours such as architecture tours or culinary experiences can offer a deeper dive into particular aspects of Frankfurt. For example, you might explore the city’s modern skyscrapers or indulge in a culinary tour showcasing local specialties.
Private Tours: For a more tailored experience, consider booking a private sightseeing tour. This allows you to customize the tour according to your interests and pace. A private guide can also provide personalized recommendations and insights, making your exploration of Frankfurt more engaging.

Warning strike began at Frankfurt airport in Germany
Ground staff at German airline Lufthansa walked out of major airports on Wednesday (Feb 7), adding to pressure for wage negotiations and spelling trouble for travellers in Europe’s biggest economy already hit by strikes on railways and public transport.
About 100,000 passengers will be affected by the strike, which began at 4 a.m. (11 a.m. Singapore time) and will last until 7.10 a.m. Thursday morning, the national carrier said.
Verdi’s union has targeted Frankfurt and Munich airports, where Lufthansa said it would target 10 to 20 per cent of its flights, as well as Berlin, Hamburg and Dusseldorf.
The airport operator said in a statement:
“Please contact your airline or travel operator for information regarding your flight. Transfer and connecting passengers should also expect strong disruptions and delays due to the strike.”
