Santa Clause: A History
The author reviews the 1985 stop-motion special "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" by Rankin/Bass, recalling it fondly from childhood and appreciating its mature storyline detailed in a fantastical setting in adulthood.
When I was a kid, this was one of my favorite Rankin/Bass specials. I would have to pled to watch it when I saw it was coming on because, as many of us know, 1990s TV in December was saturated with options when it came to Christmas movies. There was always something else that was on that was deemed better than the last Rankin/Bass Animagic (stop motion) special, 1985’s “The Life and Adventures of…

Welcome to the Tournament of the hottest boy band members of the 80s/90s
It was inspired by all the tournaments pitting famous beautiful people versus famous beautiful people of specific eras and specific jobs. The polls should start on the 8th of April, leaving around two weeks for submissions. I’ve compiled a list already but you can submit other boys that aren’t on the list through a google form. Feel free to submit non english speaking boy bands.
Propaganda
The only pictures accepted will be pictures from the 80s/90s and very early 2000s. To submit propaganda either use the same google form as for submissions (even if the guy in question is already on the list) or through the submission box or tag me on posts.

The Illustrated Al Part 2
Part 1/Part 3
Everything You Know is Wrong by Gideon Kendall
Really nice art style with lots of detail in the panels including some Extra Bonus Jokes.
Albuquerque by Ryan Dunlavey & Adam Guzowski
ehehehe look at him in his little box
:)
GLORIOUS gag that Al had the weasels on his face attacking him for the entirety of his relationship with Zelda, and upon breaking up with her they were finally removed, revealing that they had done LASIK surgery on him purely with random ravenous biting and scratching.
In the interests of balance and transparency I should mention that 1) this comic's way of depicting the snorkel thief is Not Good which was disappointing and 2) YouTube user RWappin made animated music videos of both of the above songs 11 years ago.

Frank's 2000" TV by Brian McFadden
This one is delightful because there are references to every other song on Alapalooza!
(accurate depiction of how it feels to listen to Achy Breaky Heart).
Good Old Days by Jeff McClelland, Jeff McComsey & Mark Welser
I don't really like this song but having the memories be sepia-tone with only the focus of the violent act be in colour was a nice touch.
Tw for animal cruelty and (unrelatedly) blood under the cut.
Michele's surname is shown as "Krajewski" which, given the most obvious connection, is a...choice.

Guest host Ralph Miller III, who worked behind the scenes on Dream Warriors provides insights and many effects development photos that are shown in the YouTube version of the podcast. Post-recording, the crew wants to clarify that Kevin Yagher was responsible for the Freddy Snake, and Mark Shostrom was in charge of the Penelope Sudrow dummy that smashes into the Freddyvision TV.
With the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), following the critical failure of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), New line Cinema firmly cemented Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street as one of the most iconic horror franchises of its time. Not only does Dream Warriors feature Robert Englund continuing to breathe both humor and fear into Freddy Krueger but also the return of both Heather Langenkamp and John Saxon from the original. The film also features Craig Wasson (Ghost Story) as the male lead and early film roles for Patricia Arquette and Larry Fishburne. Frank Darabont (The Mist) and Bruce Wagner join Wes Craven on scripting chores and Chuck Russell (The Blob, The Mask) directs while Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet) provides the score – a winning combination of talent. Surely a Grue-Crew highly recommended selection with special effects by Greg Cannom, Doug Beswick, Mark Shostrom, Kevin Yagher, and more!
Be sure to check out the first time the 80s Grue-Crew took a dive into this film in February 2017, featuring Doc Rotten, Christopher G. Moore, and Thomas Mariani as the Grue-Crew. You can find it here: A NIGHTMARE ON ELMS STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987) — Episode 102

When a promised job in Wyoming fails to materialise on account of an injury sustained in combat, Michael Williams (Cage) drifts into the town of Red Rock and is mistaken in a bar for a hit-man hired to kill an unfaithful wife. Tempted by the high cash on offer, Michael plays along and promptly finds himself in a web of intrigue from which escape is looking unlikely Welcome To Red Rock/You Are Now Leaving Red Rock. The studio didn’t know what to do with it, a neo-noir flavoured with contemporary Western spices. Put out on cable in America and thriving on its limited release in Europe, it started to gain a cult fan-base. More so after a theatre in the Frisco Bay area started showing it and it made considerable coinage. Today it still remains more of a cult piece than anything else, which while it deserves more accolades and exposure, is still kind of nice for the fans, because it’s like we have our ...

"FREED ON PROBATION FOR SAKE OF MOTHER," Toronto Star. March 28, 1933. Page 2. -- Ticket Scalper Fined $10- Under Another's Influence, Is Plea --- Coming up in men's court to-day for sentence on a charge of fraud, Frank E. Cox was informed by Magistrate Jones that the crown was content to put him on probation for a year. "We don't want to make it hard for your mother," said the cadi.
Appearing on a charge of criminal negligence, Gordon Foster was remanded until April 4. Ball was set at $2.000.
Alexander Bluwol was charged with ticket-scalping.
"He was selling hockey tickets of face value of 50 cents each at $1.10." said, an officer. "He had nine of them when we arrested him and he said he would return the money."
"He was under the influence of a man who was sentenced for the same thing last week," said Counsel Tommy Horkins.
Stating that he was being lenient. his worship imposed a fine of $10.
Must Restore Bicycle P.C. Masters (658) stated that he had found in the possession of Frank Smokler, aged 17, charged with receiving, a bicycle that was stolen from Norman Lewis. "The machine was painted red and the number was filed off. said the officer.
Magistrate Jones ruled the bicycle belonged to Lewis. "Well, in that case," said Counsel W. B. Horkins, "my client will be out the $8 he paid for it."
"He had better be careful when he is buying second-hand bicycles," said Mr. Jones, as the charge was withdrawn and an order was made for restitution.
With one charge of theft and two of false pretences preferred against him, Jack Murray was remanded until April 4 on a bail of $500.
"I'll keep you off the books and mark this charge withdrawn if you will respect the police," Magistrate Jones told two lads charged with vagrancy. They were Frank Cast and John Shapiro.
"They were blocking the sidewalk at the corner of Bloor and Lansdowne," said the arresting officer. "They were telling jokes and pushing each other and would not move on when I asked them to."
"I had been drinking considerably," said William Huston as he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a pair of hair clippers from a department store.
"Where did you get the liquor?" asked the bench. "A friend got a jug of wine and I had a couple of glasses."
"Ten dollars or ten days," said Magistrate Jones. William Caddick also suffered the same penalty for taking a dress and a cake of soap from the same store.
Blames Drink For Theft The third man to be fined $10 or 10 days for theft was Edmund Freeman. He admitted stealing a pair of gloves and some shaving cream. "I had been drinking," he said, "and have no recollection of what happened."
Thomas Sampson was the last of the quartet. He was charged with receiving as well as theft.
Huston, who was recalled from custody, declared that he had asked Sampson to take a pair of pliers and knife. "Sampson," he said, "did not know that the articles were stolen."
A store detective said she had seen Sampson take a package of razor blades but nothing else.
Counsel T. B. Horkins, for accused, spoke eloquently and at some length, trying to convince Crown Attorney McFadden that accused, if he had received the articles had been unaware that he was committing an offence.
Magistrate Jones brought the case to close by saying: "I will fine Sampson $10 or ten days for receiving and withdraw the theft charge."
Thomas B. Hind, aged 34, of Collahie Ave., charged with the theft of $400.96, was remanded until April 1. Bail was set at $1.000. It is alleged that Hind, for 22 years a cashier with the C.P.R., had used two days receipts at the West Toronto office to finance a trip to the United States. He was arrested yesterday by Detective-Sergeants Nelson Silverthrone and Joseph Ewing.
"He told me the cheque was as good as gold," said the complainant, who charged T. W. Sparks with a fraud of $10.
"What did you say?" asked the bench. "Ο.Κ."
Witness said the cheque turned out to be bad. A bank manager said that Sparks had exactly five cents to his account when the cheque was issued.
"I was relying on a brother-in-law to deposit some money for me," said Sparks. The charge was thereupon withdrawn.
Reckless Driver Pays $10 William Lyle was fined $10 and costs or thirty days when he pleaded guilty to reckless driving on Broad- view Ave. before Magistrate Browne in liquor and traffic court to-day. His driver's permit was cancelled for two months. A constable testified he smelled of liquor.
Roy Tanner pleaded guilty to reckless driving on Queen St. E., on Sunday.
"If I was speeding, I didn't know it," he pleaded. "Oh, no," remarked the bench.
Tanner was assessed $10 and costs or thirty days. His driver's permit was cancelled for two months.
Irving Martin bumped into a taxi cab on Front St., related P.C. Smith (453). The case was remanded till April 4 so Martin could make restitution. Bail was set at $500.
Harold McKinley was fined $10 and costs or 30 days for reckless driving on Roncesvalles Ave. His driver's permit was cancelled for two months. "He had been drinking by the odor of his breath," said P.C. McNaughton. "He wasn't intoxicated."
Anna Wilson was fined $25 and costs or 30 days. Her driver's permit was cancelled for three months.
P.C. Wrigglesworth said he followed the woman from Carlton St. to St. Alban's St. She had no lights on, he declared. The woman told the court she had drunk some ale.

My First Six Reads of Summer
This is the officially my tenth day of summer break, and I finished my sixth book yesterday. Not bad!
One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware - This was a three-star read most of the way through, but I would rate it a three and a half overall as I did like the ending. The title of the book is nearly the name of a reality show (The Perfect Couple) that the thirty-something virologist protagonist and her younger boyfriend (wannabe actor) go on as part of an attempt to boost his pathetic acting career. The show takes place on a a brand new resort on an island in the Indian Ocean. Once there, they will compete with four other couples for a hefty cash prize. Once contestants are elminated, their partner is allowed to spend the night with any other contestant. Protagonist Lyla hopes that she can just be eliminated and boyfriend Nico can stay and win the money. Obviously for the sake of the plot, that does not happen. Things get even worse when a violent storm leaves them without power or any access to the mainland (the show took their phones). Aliances are made for survival purposes. But who will survive? Ware's writing is always fast-moving. Her protagonists are likable. This one got a little too long, but I did enjoy the end. Rounded up to four stars on Goodreads.
The House that Horror Built by Christina Henry - I had been saving this for nearly a month to be my first book of summer until the previoius book came in at the library. No matter. This was not Henry's best effort. Good characters. Good pace. Mediocre plot. Single mom Harry gets a job cleaning the mansion of a recluse. But not just any recluse: a horror film director who is hiding from the public eye after his son and wife disappeared years ago. While cleaning, Harry hears noises. She tries to ignore them but can only do so for so long. Even though this was average at best, I will eagerly await Henry's next book.
The Housemaid is Watching by Frieda McFadden - Another one I was waiting for. That I bought. But oly $4.99 on Kindle. And it wasn't even worth that. Two stars. Nothing happened for most of the book. I figured out what was going to happen and then was disappointed when that was, actually, what happened. I think I enjoyed the narration in the previous two installments of this series, but the narration annoyed me in this one. Disappointment.
Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda - This book takes place in North Carolina during an unprecendented period with no rain. Miranda really uses rain as its classic symbolism in literature when the end arises. Protagonist Hazel returns to her small town for the sudden death and funeral of her father. As expected with any return to a small town, secrets emerge regarding Hazel's family including her long-lost mother. This book was pretty average. Fast-moving. Good dialog to prose ration. I didn't predict the entire ending. So not bad.
Chain Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - So many people I know loved this book that I couldn't wait any longer. The hold came in quickly, but it just wasn't for me. It was more character driven which always makes a had read for me. The title characters are part of gladioator-style entertainment which allow prisoners to fight to the death to win their freedom. There are a lot of characters to keep straight all with sad stories which, as a reader, you know are the stories of real people. Some of these stories are told in the footnotes: real and fictional. The footnotes slowed me down, but I was pleased with some of the new information I learned. The writing style wasn't a style I enjoy due to minimal dialog. I should have made this a DNF. But I did enjoy the very end. Two stars.
The Boy Who Loved Anne Frank by Ellen Feldman - I bought this as a cheap e-read as a number of people mentioned its worth on FB book groups I'm part of the day it was on sale. Sadly, this one ended up as three stars as well. And that was up from two stars in the first half. This book tells the story of Peter Van Pels (van Daan in the Anne Frank's famous diary and consequent play) if he survived the Holocaust. We find him married with two children in America living a comfortable suburnan life and hiding his wartime history and his Judaism. Things are going quite well until the book version of Anne's diary makes it into his own home via his wife. The first half was insanely slow. The character building was, sadly, not engaging. But the plot did pick up some in the second half. However, not enough that I'd recommend it.
