fran's 2023 read it and weep 🫵
a comprehensive list of everything i read this year and why you should (or shouldn't) read it as well...
how to read literature like a professor by thomas c. foster
i picked this back up again when i took on a teaching job as a refresh - it was my fourth or fifth reread and as always my main man thomas c. did not disappoint!! not joking when i say i quote this thing on the reg: it's a symbol if you think it is became a permanent fixture in my vernacular ages ago. this book aligns perfectly with my yes the curtains are blue on purpose agenda and serves as an excellent foray into deep/active reading, which i am constantly preaching about to my kids. fun and fresh literary analysis, just the way it should be!
tiny beautiful things by cheryl strayed
gritty, witty, and full of heart. this advice column-turned-book is shocking but so very human, and it got me out of a months-long reading slump.
bridge of clay by markus zusak
yes, a boy named clay builds a bridge, but it’s sooooo much more than that. this book weaves the past and present together in a beautiful way and really brings meaning to the concept of haunting the narrative. the descriptions are vivid and lived-in which makes the setting - 1980’s australia - entirely accessible, even to a foreign homebody like me. the family dynamics at play are outrageous and charming and the whole thing is gorgeously written and it made me cry. read it right now.
the hunchback of notre dame by victor hugo
i LOVED this book but unless you are just as obsessed with the story as me, this is not a rec. victor hugo anything is more of a warning or an i-read-it-so-you-didn't-have-to. did i learn more than i ever wanted to about french gothic architecture and the paris catacombs? yes. was i still utterly enthralled by the layers upon layers of tragedy woven together? also yes. it was so neat to see the (obviously many and major) differences from the children's movie and musical that i grew up loving. so many good quotes for my commonplace book in this one.
song of solomon by toni morrison
i had read just about every toni morrison book except this one, and since this is like theee book i figured it was high time i rectified that. to no one's surprise, i loved it. a brilliantly written coming of age novel with family history and family mythology in dialogue with cultural history and cultural mythology. who are we but the stories we tell ourselves? is common history alone enough to have in common? morrison is an author who poses difficult questions and lets her readers grapple with difficult answers and i always come away from her work feeling exhilarated. if you let me influence you in anything let it be this - whatever book of hers you choose, Everyone should read toni morrison and experience her brilliance firsthand.
the first law trilogy by joe abercrombie (the blade itself, before they are hanged, and last argument of kings, respectively)
gritty political fantasy with the most lovable evil bastards of characters you ever met - it's safe to say i'm obsessed. each and every character has themes and lines of repetition that carry through the series, but they're Anything but one-note. this trilogy is all about cycles, and what i love is that everything - literally everything - comes full circle while still feeling fresh and true to both the story and its characters. also logen ninefingers is my wife now.
the pale blue eye by louis bayard
i watched this movie first on netflix and had a great time, but to no one's surprise i'm going to tell you that the book is better. the character voices are strong and enjoyable - the kinds of personalities that keep you turning pages - and the mystery itself is full of wonderful twists and turns. it's in dialogue with sir arthur conan doyle, as all post-holmes detective fiction is, but does not feel shadowed by or beholden to it. the historical fiction aspect is fun as well!

fran’s 2024 read it and weep 🫵
a comprehensive list of everything i read last year and why you should (or shouldn't) read it as well...
laughing in the hills by bill barich
total snoozefest!! i read this bc i needed a book to occupy me at work and it was in my house and tbh i struggled to get through it bc it’s that dull. there was maybe one line i really liked and that was it
it ends with us by colleen hoover
you already know this sucks. like a lot. somehow it was worse than i imagined, which is saying something bc i had lowww expectations. my friend lent this to me bc she wanted to go see the movie and i had complained so much about my last read, and while it was more of a page turner than the last that’s really the only compliment i can give it
it starts with us by colleen hoover
lent to me by the same friend, still bad. worse, actually. sentence to sentence this was an improvement on the prior book but plot-wise? well there was no plot.
the silent patient by alex michaelides
one thing about me is that i LOVE an unreliable narrator and we get two for the price of one here!! this book was a little slow to start but by the middle i was hooked. super fun read, got me through waiting for new tires to be put on my beautiful car
fire & blood by george r.r. martin
what can i say except house of the dragon got me good… i really enjoyed this but i’m saying that as someone who sunk hours and hours in my high school math classes reading game of thrones. i loved seeing everything laid out ‘historically’ (silmarillion enjoyer 🤡) and it gave not necessarily a new perspective on the show but a deeper one. refreshing as well bc i was disappointed by hotd s2
a raisin in the sun by lorraine hansberry
classic for a reason but it didn’t wow me. like i get why we study it and appreciate the symbolism but it’s so handfed that i couldn’t really get into it - i like to fight for my interpretations
hooked: art and attachment by rita felski
YUCK!! my whole class hated this book and my opinion does not differ. it is a huge ginormous essay that says nothing at all, and the something it’s trying to say isn’t even interesting
parable of the sower by octavia e. butler
now this is a book you must read!! excellent world building with a dystopia that starts off subtle and then explodes. the main character is SO interesting and the way these characters navigate personal relationships + hope vs. pain + survival + religion is fascinating
murder in an irish pub by carlene o’connor
what it says on the tin. this was a shitty little book my coworker bought in an airport, didn’t read, and then gave to me. there were typos in it (embarrassing) and i think it’s part of a loosely connected series that i did not read prior so some sneaky nods to past works were lost on me, but it was no great loss bc this was no great literature
head off & split by nicky finney
poetry that unzips you my beloved 🫶 these poems are so !!!!! you know what i mean?? definitely some of them rely on intimate knowledge of bush-era political failings and i’m just a bit young to really Get That lived experience but this is a really truly gripping and visceral selection of poetry
watershed by percival everett
easily my fav read of the year 🙂↕️ i read it in an afternoon and literally could not put it down!! the characters are deeply Real and the interwoven timeline + character moments are gorgeously executed. i’d give more context but this is the kind of book that going in blind adds to the experience
#fran reads#lmk if you read any of these!!#also as ever send recs im ravenous for literature of all varieties

Fuck man I knew aai 1-4 had MVK being dismissive and abusive to the siblings but fuck man.

Actively saying that attending his 13 year old daughters courtroom debut isn't a priority for him

Then this exchange which is prompted by nothing beyond Miles asking to do his job even using the Von Karma framing of finding perfection only for Manfred to just completely shut him down and verbally abuse him

Miles then being completely unable to respond in shame. Even though this is God damn Bratworth were talking about and in the last scene he was saying this

And then Fran coming in to desperately try and deflect her father ire to protect him

Then when she finally does convince him to let them investigate he says this

Basically actively admitting to anyone with the context we have now that he's only making Miles a procecutor to sully Gregory's legacy.

Then Miles thanking her because he saw her defelcting Manfreds abuse for him.
Just absolutely heart breaking. It really shows the dynamic at play here perfectly. He doesn't care about Franziska. He is not putting this energy into her career and only putting it into Miles' because he is using it as an avenue to abuse and control him and further enact his revenge on Gregory. And she doesn't understand why. She doesn't get why Miles gets this attention and she doesn't. But she already knows that she has to deflect his attention to protect Miles. And Miles doesn't understand how he's doing everything he can to do the right thing but is still his target. Its such a genuinely interesting dynamic where both of them think the other is the favourite. Miles thinks it Fran because he's not constantly verbally abusing her and Fran thinks it's Miles because he actually bothers to give him the time of day and is properly mentoring him. She's 13 man. She's about to become a prosecutor at 13 and he still doesn't care about her in the slightest.
Ugh Von Karma siblings, my heart
#ace attorney#miles edgeworth#von karma siblings#franziska von karma#bratworth#manfred von karma#tw abuse#ace attorney investigations#i always say i relate a lot to miles with MVK but honestly i had this exact dynamic with that abuser that Fran has#being the better one. working yourself to death to become it and sacrifing so much of your humanity so you can be recognised#even trhough you know the person tou want to recognise you is cruel and vindictive#but not understanding why the other persons gets that praise when you dont even though its coupled with abuse#my heart#i need to read and write so much von karma siblings fic after this omg

I also wanna know about your Timmy Turner headcanons, please.🩷

Please enjoy these low quality images of the Boy™ ever.
Timmy is so extremely Boy that he's also a girl to me. You understand and you agree.
Related: when he feels like a girl, he just has Wanda and Cosmo switch his gender. So much easier than keeping a whole second closet of wigs and makeup and dresses on hand! Normally, though, Timmy feels masculine/androgynous and doesn't care how he's perceived. (He's got better shit to do than worry if his hair is getting too long or if wearing that cute shirt he saw at Walmart will make him look like a girl. Not his problem!!!)
When he gets older he starts to love his teeth, purely out of spite because so many people dragged him about his overbite over the years.
He retires his pink hat as a teenager. (He gives it to Poof.)
In my ideal canon, Timmy ends up as an honorary fairy. Because fuck any reality where he has to say goodbye to his found family, I don't respect that at all.
He and Chester briefly "date" in middle school. It's mostly sweaty hand holding and lots of awkward blushing. It doesn't work out, but it's what introduces Timmy to the wonderful world of Questioning Your Sexuality (and eventually his gender).
Timmy graduates high school with a comfortable C average.
Timmy's favorite wish is Poof.
His favorite reoccuring wish is putting a theme park in his backyard. At this point, he's purposely trying to see how long it takes his parents to notice. (Hint: they never do.)
Timmy always has a pair of scissors on him, in case he needs to cut through a net unexpectedly. He never leaves home without something sharp.
He gets a shitty tattoo when he's fifteen to spite his parents (they don't notice). His second tattoo is carefully selected to remind him of Cosmo, Wanda, and Poof, and they are with Timmy in human disguises when he gets it. He gets other tattoos eventually, but the second one is his favorite.
When he gets older, his parents get worse. They neglect him more frequently and yell at him when they are paying attention to him. Wanda and Cosmo give Timmy an emergency button that will poof him into their castle if he needs to hide for whatever reason. He eventually gets his own bedroom next to Poof's.
(On really bad nights, he wanders the Hall of Timmy to remind himself that he's loved.)
Timmy dislikes his last name. (For a couple years after the Wishology stuff, he flinches when someone says his full name.)
He and Trixie become really good friends in high school once she stops caring about the opinions of people who don't like the real her, anyway.
His least favorite color is orange. (Blue is a close second.)
Timmy mellows with age but he still loves to cause problems on purpose. Sometimes just to get Cosmo to laugh and Wanda to do her fond little eyeroll.
He leaves the house on his eighteenth birthday. (It's the only birthday that his parents ever remembered.)
#timmy turner#ask#far from fran#fairly oddparents#honorable mention: age regression#i read a fic where Timmy would have Wanda age him down to a baby and coddle him to make up for a childhood full of neglect#age regression isn't something I'm at all interested in or familiar with but it was written very understandably!#timmy is one of the few characters I could see doing that
