This is my iron horse. I gave up my car years ago and this is how I get around. Do I recommend doing this in the US? Nope. Unless you live in one of the few cycling friendly places in the nation (I don't), then you are signing up for a life of elevated stress levels with associated long-term health effects, driver aggression, and frequent near-death experiences. Assuming you can even find a decent bicycle for the purpose. Most bicycles sold in North America that aren't department store garbage are geared towards sport, not utility, except E-bikes, which can be kind of a mixed bag in terms of components.

I used to commute 30 miles (48km) a day by bicycle (not this one). Never again. I'll never be able to forget the things that happened. It's short hauls for me now.

This is a Rivendell Clem Smith Jr L. It looks like a Dutch omafiet but is not. It is lighter, faster, springier, and more expensive, and in return it can't carry as much weight, or fit cheaper Dutch bike parts without modification, but has better brakes. I modified a standard Dutch rear carrier to fit it, and slapped on some grocery panniers. I'd like to run a sprung saddle but the seat tube is too tall.

The carrier and panniers I purchased from hollandbikeahop.com. Even with international shipping, they are far cheaper than anything I could get here, as are most of the parts. I can fit an entire cart of groceries in the panniers, but the bicycle frame is so flexible that it tends to make the handling kind of crap. It really needs stronger wheels for that anyway. I'd also really like to put a Rohloff hub and a Gates belt drive in it, but I'd have to put a cutout in the right chainstay.

You can get Dutch bicycles here but, if you live in a hilly place, you really need one with rim or disk brakes, as the typical roller, drum, or coaster brakes that they come with aren't strong enough. If you can find a framebuilder or the like, you can have V-brake studs or disc tabs welded on.

Also, you can't carry big loads with these. You'll need either a trailer or another type of cargo bicycle called a bakfiets or a longjohn. There are videos on YouTube showing how to cheaply make your own, because they are quite expensive to purchase.

Road to Councours de Machines 2021 🇫🇷 Flow in my previous post. I've had this crazy idea of concept MTB, a proto that will be only one and will never do similar again. Yes, I will not for sure. Encouraged by that I've decided to cut out the top tube so I could make.it more attractive. But my experience with composites are "0" and that could be fatal. So I've supplied some carbon tubes, prepped the frame and I've even had the entire frame set galvanized so the contrast would be radical. Like the mtb's in the 90's alloy and carbon. So imagine, literally weeks of work because I was making this at nights, like almost wasted every day and weekends. I've approached the carbon assembly. Working with epoxy made it even worse. Omg, i must laugh thinking of it. Adhesive everywhere! Anyway, I've glued all in and let it dry over a day and something. It looked awesome, I was totally winning! Well.. I've assembled, fork cockpit, wheels cranks to see how it feels and it just happened. The frame was twisting and I knew top tube is the key. I've used too thin wall or just a crap tubes, I can't tell. I don't even dig for why that happened! No carbon no.. I've cut the frame for bits again and fixed top tube with Steel one.... Better late than never. 5 years and 3 cities later I'm pleased to announce the revival of The DJ Trike project through my new venture @publicsoundsys 🔊 Inspired by mobile DJ and sound system culture, bicycles, public art, and urban design, PSS is a service and platform dedicated to transforming passive spaces into collective places by creating communal experiences, interventions, and activations using music as a social connector. . Since its scrappy beginnings in 2010 in Vancouver, The DJ Trike has been a passion project of mine that I never would have imagined to still be working on nearly a decade later. The friendships, experiences, lessons, and creative energy it has given me throughout the years have been priceless. Custom designing and hand-building the new frame and container system has been an epic physical and emotional journey, a mostly solitary one spent in many workshops, but full of new learnings and skills, late nights and weekend hustling, and successes and failures. The biggest lessons I’ve learned from all this was to not undervalue my creative instinct and vision, to not be afraid to take on challenges that force me out of my comfort zone, realizing the true value of taking time to invest in myself and my ideas and seeing it as not a selfish act, but a restorative and empowering one, understanding that if you have an idea that’s strange or uncommon, there will always be people in the world that will understand and connect with it, and lastly, that no one will bring my ideas to life except me. . As you can imagine, I'm excited to bring it back into the wild and reconnect.
