Budget-Friendly Kitchen Remodeling Ideas for Dallas Homeowners
Renovating your kitchen can inhale new life into your dream house, making it a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space. However, the vision of a kitchen remodel often comes with a heavy price tag. Fear not, Dallas homeowners, as there are numerous budget-friendly ideas to restore your kitchen without draining your wallet. In this guide, we'll explore some creative solutions tailored to the unique needs of Dallas, TX, Kitchen Remodel projects.
DIY Makeover Magic:
One of the most cost-effective ways to give your kitchen a facelift is by embracing the do-it-yourself (DIY) spirit. Consider repainting your cabinets with a fresh coat of paint in trending Dallas colors, instantly transforming the room. A spray of color can breathe life into the space without the need for a complete renovation. Remember, simplicity can be key, and a well-executed DIY project can rival professional results.
2. Upgrade Your Hardware:
Often ignored, changing the hardware in your kitchen can make an important impact. Change outdated handles and faucets for modern, affordable options. Look for local Dallas suppliers offering stylish yet budget-friendly hardware options for your kitchen remodeling Dallas project.
3. Focus on Lighting:
The lighting systems have the power to either enhance or weaken the atmosphere of your kitchen. Explore cost-effective lighting solutions that not only enlighten the kitchen area but also add a touch of stylishness. Local Dallas home improvement stores often have budget-friendly lighting options that align with the latest trends in kitchen design.
4. Optimize Storage:
Maximizing storage is crucial in any kitchen, and Dallas homeowners can achieve this without breaking the bank. Invest in top-notch storage solutions, such as pull-out shelves and organizers. These storage additions not only improve functionality but also contribute to a better-organized and visually attractive kitchen.
5. Consider Refinishing Instead of Replacing:
Before committing to an expensive cabinet replacement, explore the option of refinishing. Refinishing cabinets is a cost-effective alternative that can provide a fresh look without the need for a complete renovation. It's a sustainable option that resonates with the eco-conscious mindset common in Dallas, TX, Kitchen Remodel projects.
6. Shop Local for Bargains:
Dallas is home to a variety of local businesses offering budget-friendly kitchen supplies. Whether it's discounted appliances, affordable tiles, or cost-effective countertops, shopping locally can yield unique finds at a fraction of the cost. Keep an eye out for sales and promotions during different seasons to get the best deals and save more money.
7. Embrace Open Shelving:
Open shelving is a popular and economical trend in kitchen design. Consider removing some cabinet doors and embracing open shelves to display your kitchen essentials. Open shelving not only creates an open and well-ventilated experience but also helps you showcase your style through curated displays.
8. Focus on High-Impact Areas:
If a full-scale remodel isn't within your budget, concentrate on high-impact areas that can create a noteworthy difference. Updating the backsplash, changing the paint color, or investing in a stylish new kitchen mat are budget-friendly ways to refresh the space without a major financial commitment.
Conclusion

It funny, the places where CEOs, tycoons, executive staff, top management and their entourage live and place their HQs, where you might possibly see them as potentially some fraction of the vote, are places like Washington, Delaware, Virginia, Texas, New Jersey, Connecticut, California and New York. (and NY, TX & CA are too big for 1 company to influence) Aside from Texas, these are solidly Democratic states. CEO's votes are irrelevant in the places they WANT to live and they go and insult the workers who they need to vote for them in the swing states (where CEOs don't want to live). Not GREAT strategy! (But then we already know Musk and Trump are very stupid people)

Several Hong Kong activists participated in a forum on Capitol Hill on Wednesday primarily sponsored by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VCMF) in collaboration with other groups.
Irving Alfred Baleros, social worker and front line activist in Hong Kong, alleged police officers are raiding medical facilities to arrest wounded protestors.
Baleros, who operates a medical center to treat Hong Kong protesters hurt by police, proclaimed:
Starting from the beginning of June, the police has been going into the hospitals and identifying those protestors who get injured [many times by law enforcement’s own hands]. Then, they disrupt them through their process of treatment, and they arrest them in the hospital.
This is creating a lot of horrors. People who are getting injured from protesting, they are not going into the hospitals to seek medical support or medical assistance.
I remember I received a case [about a protester] who suffered from a bone fraction, but he did not dare find a doctor because he was worried that if he went to medical support, he would be caught by police. … What police are doing is putting the protesters lives in danger, and we are really, really angry about that.
A masked female online activist identified by the nom-de-guerre CK also participated in the Capitol Hill event. She documented what she described as the “lies of our government” about the realities facing Hong Kong protests for a media broadcast platform known as the Citizens Press Conference.
Carrie Lam, the China-appointed leader of Hong Kong, has repeatedly dismissed police brutality accusations against local police officers. At the end of last month, she vowed to use “stern law enforcement” to quell the violent demonstrators instead. The pro-democracy movement has demanded an independent investigation into police brutality, but Hong Kong law enforcement reportedly rejects such a move.
On Wednesday, the activist CK proclaimed:
I’m often kept awake a night … by the horrible things happening in Hong Kong. … My nightmares … consist … of police brutality — covert murders, [extrajudicial inc arceration], and even cases of torture, and suspected rapes of arrestees.
She suggested she receives thousands of complaints about police brutality daily and writes about them all.
LV, who also wore a mask and used a pseudonym on Wednesday, accused the Chinese communist dictatorship of fueling the unrest in Hong Kong by ordering the police to hurt “so many innocent civilians … with tear gas.”
As a volunteer first aid responder, LV claimed she witnessed the abuse first hand.
“I saw with my own eyes that emotional Hong Kong police are using excessive force to brutally beat in the heads of” demonstrators who had already surrendered “with batons,” she said.
“I witnessed police pepper spray protesters at closer range and using rubber bullets and bean bag rounds without any warning.” LV also said.
Citizen journalist CK expressed fear about retaliation from the communist regime. She indicated that pro-Beijing Hong Kong leaders are using the police to crush dissent and maintain its grip over the minds of the city’s residents, adding:
Our government hates it when we speak our truth. So they rob us of freedom of speech and thought. It is the [Chinese Communist Party’s] favorite tactic to divide and conquer and thus [documenting the atrocities] is particularly crucial. It is our last line of defense on which we converge amid this diminishing capacity for us to speak for our selves. Only by making truth widely and available may the people make the best judgment and decisions for themselves
Wednesday’s event featured Chinese human right advocates Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA). Congress is considering legislation to support Hong Kong protestors amid the ongoing Washington-Beijing trade war. It came amid ongoing pro-democracy protests raging in Hong Kong since June with animosity between the demonstrators and police turning increasingly violent.
Cruz vowed the U.S would take necessary steps to ensure China respects human rights and the island’s autonomy desires.
Hong Kong is a semi-autonomous Chinese jurisdiction that enjoys more democratic values than the mainland. China, however, has been taking those away. Despite China’s armed forces buildups in Hong Kong, Communist Party dictator Xi Jinping has yet to use military force in response to the protest.
A now rescinded bill that would have allowed the extradition of Hong Kong criminals to China triggered the ongoing demonstrations. The primary focus of the protests, however, has entirely shifted to Hong Kong’s desire for democracy and full autonomy.
During Wednesday’s event and a similar one the previous involving some of the same participants and hosted the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, authorities urged American lawmakers to support their democracy struggle against Beijing’s Communist authoritarianism.

● Lower energy costs, longer lifespan of the roof, and provides an eco-friendly alternative to roof replacement.
The Roof Restoration Process
The 5 Step Roof Restoration Process
1. Roof Assessment
The first thing that needs to happen is to have your roof carefully assessed for damage points. This will require an end to end walk through of your roof, scanning every point for signs of damage. Generally, damages will be in the form of cracked or broken tiles, punctured metal sheets (hail damage or fallen objects), or even old tiles in danger of breaking. Leakage is also checked to see if certain spots of the roof is leaking. Photos should be taken of damaged points so that these can be systematically fixed during the repairs.
When walking on the roof, it is very important that you or the installer adorns proper safety wear, such as non-slip boots. This will ensure no accidents happen. The roof assessment process may take an hour or more, depending on the size of the roof. It is perhaps one of the most critical phase of roof restoration, as you do not want to miss out any damage points. Given that roof restoration would only be done once in 5 or 10 years.
2. Roof Cleaning
The next step is to wash out the roof with a high pressure hose. This removes years of dirt, grime and debris from the roof. It is important to ensure that the gutters are also cleared and clean. During the cleaning process, damaged points will become clearer as the dirt gets washed off.
In addition, it’s also a good time to check for roof leakages, as water is run over the roof. Any points where water leakage or seepage is observed should be marked or photographed, so that they can be fixed in the repair phase.
Roof cleaning is an important step as you want the roof to be absolutely clean before the chemical treatment or coating is applied.
3. Roof Repairs
This is perhaps the most critical step in the roof restoration process. Repairing a roof is a detailed process of following up on every damage point identified in the assessment stage. Broken or damaged sections of the roof are replaced with matching tiles/metal sheets, and carefully mended. Workmanship is important as poor quality work could come back to haunt you, in the form of water seepage or leaks.
Roof repair is probably the most compelling reason you would want to get a professional to handle your roof restoration works. A qualified and experienced roofing expert will be able to deliver professional results – making your roof as new.
When replacing tiles, metal roofing, special tools may be required. If you intend to DIY, ensure that you look up which tools are required and stock up on the color/type of tile or materials you require.
4. Chemical Treatment
Most roof restoration companies will coat the roof with protective coating after the repair work is completed. This increases the durability of the roof, prolonging the time before the next maintenance is required. There are different types of coating chemicals with varying degrees of effectiveness and functionality. This can include waterproofing, thermal insulation, rust proofing and more. Ask your roof restoration company what type of coating they will apply for your roof.
5. Final Assessment
Once all the above steps are completed, a post job assessment should be conducted. Another walk through of the roof is essential to identify and areas that have been missed out. This final step is very important to ensure that everything is done completely and appropriately.
Have an old roof that needs restoration? Contact Handyman McAllen today for an affordable quote. We use only the best equipment and our roofing experts have extensive experience to deliver an excellent job on each project.

● Consider Safety First: If the house owner is lazy and is not bothered about fixing the leak during the initial stages, the safety of all the household members is threatened. Every roof restoration and roof repair service recommends that the roof should not be fixed when it is heavily raining or snowing outside. Fixing the roof during these extreme seasons can cause a fall, which might prove to be fatal. So, every roof expert will suggest the homeowner look at safety first. This does not mean that the roof repair should never be postponed.
● Identifying the Reason of the Roof Leak: Before hiring a roof restoration and repair service provider, one can look at the line of wetness to see where they are originating from. While looking for the source, one can check, if there is any kind of penetration in the roof. Items causing penetrations are the most usual source of multiple leaks. Even if the roofs are very old and are not interrupted, it is very rare for the leaks to be created. The penetrations usually occur from dormers, plumbing pipes, chimneys and other parts of the roof.
● Fixing Roof Vents: Every roof repair and restoration service should thoroughly check the roof to see if there are any broken vents. Using caulk might be tempting for a solution but it is not effective in the long run. The only solution here is to replace the damaged vents with the brand new ones. After this, the service provider should check for nails that are missing or are precariously placed in a pulled position. Such nails can be replaced with rubber-washer screws. The nails under the shingles can be completely removed from both sides of the vent and can be pulled free.
● Maintenance of Gutters: Gutter clogging is one of the reasons for the roof leaks. Gutters that are not clean usually see a lot of water being accumulated due to rain during the rainy season. The rotting that is caused does not result in any kind of damage but blocks off all kinds of ventilation. If the roof that needs to be repaired is damaged right in the middle, then the chances of the plywood deteriorating are high. This deterioration might cause the roof to sag and weaken the shingles completely. The dry rot in the roof can be avoided using a ridge vent. This works properly with a soffit vent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
My roof leaks. Do I need to have it replaced completely?
Not necessarily. Repair work is very common and can remedy some problems. We would have to inspect the damage to see if a repair is all that is needed.
How can a building owner recognize when a roof system has problems?
It can be difficult for most building owners to identify the root cause of a problem. It’s easy to tell that your roof is leaking, but not WHY it is leaking.
What are my options if I decide to have my roof replaced?
After inspection, depending on the roof, we can come up with choices and pricing. We would move to product selection as our next step.
When do I need to pay?
We ask for a deposit, usually pay your balance on net 30.
Are your roofers your own employees or subcontracted?
Residential is subcontracted with a consistent company. Commercial is all in-house.
Do I need to be on site while the work is performed?
No, but some specific access might need to be set up ahead of time.
If I buy all the materials, can you install?
No.
Do you give roof audits?
Yes, we do free roof inspections for homeowners and building owners. If you are looking to buy a building and need an inspection, then there would be a charge.
Can you put in solar tubes / skylights?
We work with a skylight manufacturer and we install them, but we don’t do any interior work.
Do you have references?
Yes, available upon request
How long does the roof installation process take?
Every project is different, but we can give a ballpark estimate during the free inspection.
How can I determine my annual roofing cost?
Roofing Restoration And Installation Services Near McAllen TX : If you’re a condo or a big building, as far as contracting some kind of maintenance agreement then it can vary based on the size of the building. Someone would have to come out and inspect it since every roof is different. The roofer would bring everything up to code, and then there would be a maintenance agreement after that. smaller condos are around $400 twice a year when under 20 units. Annual arrangements are pretty rare for residential outside of cleaning gutters.

For my followers and anyone reading the notes:
Hi! I’m a former Customer Support Representative, aka Game Master, for Blizzard Entertainment.
All of this is absolutely true.
I’m fairly sure this is mostly referring to Irvine employees, and quite frankly, that whole county is too damn expensive to live in anyway, unless you’re executive-level. The Irvine campus also has several third-party restaurants on it, including Starbucks, and so they often have no control over the pricing on meals. If the cafeteria was comparable to ours, it’s also vendored by a third party.
This doesn’t exonerate Blizz for not giving anyone a living wage, but there is some context amongst these claims.
However, 99% of Customer Support, as well as a couple other small departments, is out of Austin, TX. Austin’s campus is a mere fraction of the size of Irvine’s, but we didn’t fare much better, because the city is the fastest-growing in the US and even one-bedroom apartments are going for $800-$1200/mo and rises with each renewal. If I didn’t bring food from home, a lunch with enough food to carry me through the remaining five hours of my shift cost me $13 or so a pop at the third-party-run cafeteria. Maybe a little more if I opted for the pop-up lunch catering that started coming in in the last two years I worked there.
I was getting paid a little less than $15/hr by the time I quit. I started at $14 in 2014. And we were on the low end of industry standard, as well as paid less than comparable companies in the same area.
And dear gods, the stress I was under! The metrics I had to meet were insane. This was 8-10 hours of angry, abusive, horrible gamers yelling at me over purple pixels, one, after another, after another. I had to read and take action on the most disgusting conversations and RP profiles (after the RP addon communities added the function), up to and including child porn. An Overwatch streamer found my private social media accounts outside my work environment in order to get private information out of me. How? Because we have to (or had to, anyway; no clue if this is still the case) use our first names on phone tickets. Nothing was done about it even though I informed my manager.
None of that is worth even $15/hr.

QuadrigaCX Never Held $100M In Bitcoin, Says Crypto Researcher
Surprise! The craziest crypto-related story of 2019 has just become a tad zanier. According to a research piece from a leading industry researcher, QuadrigaCX, a Canadian Bitcoin (BTC) exchange in the midst of a multi-month imbroglio, could have been fibbing about its cryptocurrency holdings — and by a large sum at that.
Related Reading: Crypto Exchanges Begin to Shutdown: Bear Market in Full Force
The Crazy Crypto Debacle That Is QuadrigaCX
For those who missed the memo, QuadrigaCX, once Canada’s largest and most popular BTC-focused exchanges, has long been under pressure. As reported by NewsBTC last year, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) froze five accounts that were linked to Costodian Inc., Quadriga’s payment processor, and Jose Reyes, its owner. It was reported that $28 million was frozen, leaving hundreds of the platform’s customers stranded, and strapped for funds.
While further reports on the matter claim that the sum has been handed over to the Ontario Superior Court, which will see a judge determine what to do with the funds, many distressed investors have still taken to Twitter, Reddit, and other social media outlets en-masse that they have yet to receive their Bitcoin and fiat withdrawals.
Then, in early-2019, Jennifer Robertson, the wife of exchange chief Gerald Cotten, revealed that her partner purportedly died in India. Although death has touched all of humanity, meaning that Cotten’s disappearance isn’t an impossibility, many quickly asked for evidence, and what would happen with the exchange next.
Weeks later, per reports from this outlet, QuadrigaCX suddenly went offline, citing maintenance. After days of radio silence, the company issued another statement, while filing a harrowing affidavit.
Per legal documents and the press release, with the supposed death of Cotten, Quadriga’s remaining staff have effectively lost access to 26,500 BTC, 11,000 Bitcoin Cash, 11,000 Bitcoin SV, 35,000 Bitcoin Gold, 200,000 Litecoin, and 430,000 Ethereum. All this amounts to a nominal fiat value of 150 million U.S. dollars. Yet, a leading crypto researcher claims that the exchange never had access to such a pool of funds, and is lying through its own teeth.
Quadriga Might Have Never Owned $100M In Bitcoin
Crypto Medication, a researcher and data analyzer responsible for a number of key exposés, recently took to Zerononcense, a crypto-centric publication he heads, to divulge his analysis of this debacle.
1/ After a couple of days of combing through wallet explorers, examining TX IDs, addresses, and coin movements, I present to you all an analysis of QuadrigaCX's Bitcoin Holdings: https://t.co/HsAZFIjbmQ
— CryptoMedication (@ProofofResearch) February 3, 2019
Long story short, through the use of in-depth blockchain analysis, Medication determined that QuadrigaCX never lost access to its Bitcoin holdings, along with the fact that that the BTC sum cited in the affidavit likely isn’t accurate. No conclusive figures could be pinned, but the researcher also divulged that Quadriga enlisted the use of fractional reserves to service its customers, using client deposits to issue withdrawals.
Medication hasn’t been the only industry insider to be skeptical of the exchange’s status. Jesse Powell, the chief executive of legendary crypto exchange Kraken, recently took to Twitter to advise Canadian authorities, the RCMP force, to contact his upstart for insider information. In sub-tweets, Powell divulged that there’s a high likelihood that this case is “extremely suspect,” noting that the combination of fiat issues, higher withdrawal demand, and the sudden vanishing of the founder is almost too perfect.
The Kraken chief even brought Cotten’s death certificate, issued in India, into question, noting that until Canadian authorities/morticians corroborate, it would be hard to conclusively say that the Quadriga head has passed.

Journal - 8 Stunning Lobbies Featuring Perforated Metal Imagery
For commercial organizations, first impressions mean everything. That’s why companies hire the world’s best designers to help craft their lobbies, tasking them with creating an impactful entrance space to present their brand in the best possible light. These architects are faced with a challenge — their clients often desire striking materials and finishes, but balk at the cost associated with bespoke systems. Is it possible to achieve a high impact design without spending a fortune?
Answering the call, renowned architectural metal company Zahner has masterminded the innovative ImageWall system, which enables architects to specify custom perforated metal panels at a fraction of the typical cost. After architects specify their desired image, material and finish using ImageWall’s unique interactive design tool, Zahner’s patented process recreates the image as a series of perforations across the surface of the metal. Panels are then shipped with all the hardware and substructure, ready for easy installation.
AECOM’s Cleveland Office Interior features Zahner ImageWall with a distinctive Zahner Dirty Penny™ patinated copper.
ImageWall marks a new milestone in an exciting new era of metal construction — perforated metal has only been utilized in this way for around 10 years, and is quickly emerging as a go-to material for architects in search of innovative systems for both façades and interior walls. With a 125-year history of delivering world-class materials, finishes and engineering solutions, Zahner has established itself as the industry leader in this new material category.
ImageWall can be used for projects of all scales, from 8 foot partitions to 100 foot façades, and with a variety of materials, including exclusive Zahner Surfaces such as Roano™ patinated zinc, Angel Hair® stainless steel, Solanum™ preweathered steel, Dirty Penny™ patinated copper and anodized or painted aluminum.
The system is perfect for commercial lobbies, allowing designers to add incredible visual elements that can provide a company with a striking first impression of their office. In order to truly understand the incredible impact ImageWall can have, we’ve put together a collection of recent projects that utilize this innovative product.

Sentry Insurance by Potter Lawson, Stevens Point, WI, United States
This feature wall was designed by Potter Lawson for Sentry Insurance, and features an abstract design that lends the space a stylish, contemporary feel. The wall and partition screens are made of dirty penny copper, a finish with a sophisticated patina and iridescent hues ranging from purple to deep brown.

Lowlights from Zuckerberg’s Libra testimony in Congress
‘I don’t control Libra” was the central theme of Facebook’s CEO’s testimony today in Congress. The House Of Representatives unleashed critiques of his approach to cryptocurrency, privacy, encryption, and running a giant corporation during almost five hours of hearings. Zuckerberg tried to assuage their fears while stoking concerns that if Facebook doesn’t build Libra, then the world will end up using China’s version. Yet Facebook won’t stop shaking up society, with Zuckerberg saying its News tab feature will be announced this week.
During the hearing before the House Financial Services Committee that you can watch here, Zuckerberg recommitted to only releasing Libra with full US regulatory approval. But given the tone of the questioning and Zuckerberg’s lack of fresh answers since Facebook’s David Marcus testified about Libra in July, Libra now looks even less likely to launch in 2020. With few highlights or positive moments coming from the hearing, here are the lowlights that matter.
youtube
The hearing started tensely, with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) declaring that “Perhaps you believe that you’re above the law, and it appears that you are aggressively increasing the size of your company, and are willing to step over anyone, including your competitors, women, people of color, you own users, and even our democracy to get what you want . . . In fact, you have opened up a serious discussion about whether Facebook should be broken up.“
However, some members of congress used their time to advocate for American dominance instead of heavy regulation. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) said “the question is, are we going to spend our time trying to devise ways for government planners to centralize and control as to who, when and how innovators can innovate.”
On Libra
Zuckerberg tried to leverage nationalist sentiment to deflect scrutiny. “As soon as we put forward the white paper around the Libra project, China immediately announced a public private partnership, working with companies . . . to extend the work that they’ve already done with AliPay into a digital Renminbi as part of the Belt and Road Initiative that they have, and they’re planning on launching that in the next few months.” He later said that for Libra, “Chinese companies would be the primary competitors.”
Facebook’s executives have repeatedly leaned on this “let us, or China will” argument we chronicle here.
Facebook’s regulation dodge: Let us, or China will
Yet Zuckerberg wouldn’t commit to blocking anonymous Libra wallets that could facilitate money laundering, only saying Facebook’s own Calibra wallet would have strong identity checks.
Facebook has assured regulators that Calibra’s data would be kept separate from the social network. But Facebook said the same when it acquired WhatsApp, then reneged and integrated its data. This time around, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez declared that “we’re going to need to make sure that . . . you learned that you should not lie.”
When pushed on why Libra Association members like Visa, Stripe, and eBay left the organization, Zuckerberg admitted “I think because it’s a risky project and there’s been a lot of scrutiny.” Zuckerberg struck back at finance incumbents, saying “I think that the US financial industry . . . is just frankly behind where it needs to be to innovate and continue American financial leadership going forward.”
In an awkward moment, Zuckerberg could not answer which Libra members were run by women, minorities, or LGBTQ+ people. “Is it true that the overwhelming majority of persons associated with this endeavor of white men?” Rep Al Green (D-TX) asked. “Congressman, I don’t know off the top of my head” Zuckerberg responded.
What if the Libra Association chooses to add the Chinese currency to the basket used to back Libra and reduces the US dollar’s fraction of the basket? “I think it would be completely reasonable for our regulators to try to [implement] a restriction that says that it has to be primarily US dollars” Zuckerberg responded in one of his most substantial answers of the day. Zuckerberg was receptive to feedback that the Libra Association should keep its white paper updated.
As for why Libra isn’t just backed 100% with the US dollar, Zuckerberg explained that “I think from a US regulatory perspective, it would probably be significantly simpler. But because we’re trying to build something that can also be a global payment system that works in other places, it may be less welcome in other places if it’s only 100% based on the dollar.”
Facebook announces Libra cryptocurrency: All you need to know
Zuckerberg was criticized for trying to profit and potentially helping money laundering while claiming Libra is designed to help the unbanked. Zuckerberg said the Libra Association “hadn’t nailed down policies” about whether anonymous payments are allowed.
Rep Brad Sherman (D-CA) said “for the richest man in the world to come here and hide behind the poorest people in the world, and say that’s who you’re really trying to help. You’re trying to help those for whom the dollar is not a good currency — drug dealers, terrorists”. Some members of Congress like Sherman chose to use their entire time monologuing instead of actually asking questions.
Zuckerberg got a chance to clear up a major snafu from Marcus’ testimony, where he said the Libra Association was in contact with the Swiss data regulator, which CNBC reported hadn’t heard from Libra. Zuckerberg explained today that the Libra Association had been in contact with the primary Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority instead.
Throughout the testimony, Zuckerberg tried to distance himself and Facebook from the Libra Association’s decision making process. “We might be required to pull out if the Association independently decides to move forward on something that we’re not comfortable with” Zuckerberg said. That means if Facebook can’t launch Libra, it could still theoretically launch without the social network though it does most of the engineering heavy-lifting.
The strategy was crystallized by Zuckerberg’s response to whether he could commit to moving Libra’s headquarters from Switzerland to the US. “At this point, we do not control the independent Libra Association so I don’t think we can make that decision.”
The ‘we don’t control Libra’ argument provides Facebook and Libra an escape hatch from criticism, because any member and even the newly appointed chairperson and board can’t unilaterally control or make promises about its actions.
On Encryption, DeepFakes, and Hoaxes
Beyond Libra, Rep Ann Wagner (R-MO) chided Zuckerberg saying “you’re not working hard enough” to stop the spread of child exploitation imagery online despite Facebook submitting millions of reports. She brought up worries that Facebook moving entirely to encrypted messaging could hide child abusers, and Zuckerberg merely said “I think we work harder than any other company”. He failed to explain how Facebook would continue improving detection through encryption.
Oddly, Zuckerberg was directly confronted about his views on vaccines since Facebook works to hide vaccine hoaxes and avoid recommending groups spreading unverified information about them. “I don’t think it would be possible for anyone to be 100% confident, but my understanding of the scientific consensus is that it is important that people get their vaccines” Zuckerberg said, defending Facebook’s decision to hide some of this content.
On DeepFakes, Zuckerberg confirmed that ” I think deep fakes are clearly one of the emerging threats that we need to get in front of and develop policy around to address. We’re currently working on what the policy should be to differentiate between media that has manipulated and been manipulated by AI tools like deep fakes, with the intent to mislead people.” Yet Facebook’s policy allows politicians ads to mislead people, weakening faith that it will properly address this new problem.
On Diversity, Discrimination, And Moderation
Regarding housing discrimination via Facebook ads, Zuckerberg committed to working with regulators to provide information under subpoena, noted Facebook has banned discriminatory housing ads, and said “Nobody wants to redline and I’m sure that was accidental.”
Zuckerberg received his heaviest criticism of the day from Rep Joyce Beatty (D-OH), who grilled him about not knowing if diverse bankers manage Facebook’s cash or if diverse law firms handle its court cases. She chastised Facebook for a lack of diverse leadership, saying “this is appalling and disgusting to me”. Of COO Sheryl Sandberg who leads Facebook’s civil rights taskforce, Beatty said “we know she’s not really civil rights”.

Some of the day’s most astute questioning came from Congresswoman Katherine Porter (D-CA). She hammered Zuckerberg about Facebook lawyers fighting to avoid liability over data breaches. Then she trapped Zuckerberg on the issue of the mental health harms of being a Facebook content moderator that reviews horrific and graphic violence.
“Would you be willing to commit to spending one hour a day for the next year, watching these videos and acting as a content monitor and only accessing the same benefits available to your workers?” she asked. “I’m not sure that would serve our community for me to spend my time” Zuckerberg said. “What you’re saying is you’re not willing to do it” she replied.

Facebook Will Announce News Service
There’ll be more major launches from Facebook that could raise questions about its impact on society, Zuckerberg revealed. “Later this week we actually have a big announcement coming up on launching a big initiative around news and journalism, where we’re partnering with a lot of folks to build a new product that’s supporting high quality journalism.” Facebook plans to launch a News section featuring headlines from top outlets, though only some will be paid.
“I think that there’s an opportunity within Facebook in our services to build a dedicated surface, a tab within the apps for example, where people who really want to see high quality curated news, not just social content . . . I’m looking forward to discussing that in more length in the coming days.” That service is sure to trigger debates about whether Facebook is trustworthy enough to be a formal conduit for news.
Overall, the questioning today was much more intelligent than the vague and easily-Googleable queries launched at Zuckerberg by Congress in April 2018. We had no “Senator, we run ads” moments. Instead, it was Zuckerberg who repeatedly used the separation between Facebook and the Libra Association plus the fact that Libra’s policies are still being defined to avoid giving many substantial answers. Combined with the short five-minute Q&A period per member of Congress, Zuckerberg was often able to just repeat existing talking points.

In one of the few lighthearted moments of the day, Rep Juan Vargas recognized the tough position Zuckerberg has gotten himself into. “It’s good to have someone that’s sturdy and resilient. You’re probably the right person at the right time to take this beating.”
The question is what array of Libra and Facebook executives would Congress need to have testify together to get real answers to critical questions about how to keep the two from harming the global economy.
The hearing is ongoing and we’ll continue to update this article with major takeways.
