this is an extremely normal traphawk fic i promise (aka me and some fellow MASHoles decided about a month ago that Trapper's a foxboy now purely for enrichment purposes and now my brain is broken)

My attempts to do so have yielded ~120k words of fanfic over the last (checks calendar) holy SHIT only three months so the injection is extremely slow going. it's like hrt i guess. uhhhhhh let's pick out a specific thing to talk about in that case

Radar's Report! You know, the episode where Trapper tries to murder a guy? I've mentioned it a couple of times across fics but I think in the foxtrap verse it's probably one of the single most terrifying moments of Trapper's life.

He treats every single one of his patients like family. Like they're his children. Maybe it's an instinct he'd have even if he wasn't Like This, but it's one he can't possibly turn away from. And then The Enemy kills one of his boys. One of his boys that he knows he could have saved.

He's furious. He feels... cornered. Because he's been here so fucking long and maybe he's never going to get to go home, and even if he does, what's going to happen to him then? Is Hawk really going to come home with him, get him out from under Louise's thumb, and get him and his girls into a better home? Hell, what if Louise fights to keep the girls? He can't possibly do anything then, and he watched himself lose one kid, and he can't lose the ones that are his, he can't he can't he can't...

So he spirals. And when he's upset, the fox instincts come out even harder.

What's a terrified fox going to do when something threatens one of his babies?

Trapper's heard stories about what happens to cursed people who go off the deep end—hell, he's seen it. They're treated as inhuman for long enough and sometimes they just stop fighting it. They stop talking, sometimes they stop using their hands, God, what if they stop thinking like a person? They lose damn near every piece of what makes them themselves. Nobody's willing to keep taking care of them like that, so they get sent to homes. Theoretically you could rehabilitate someone like that, but who would want to? Maybe if he was cat-cursed or dog-cursed, but a fox? Nobody wants to keep him as is.

So here he is, staring down the barrel of choosing to end a man's life with his own two hands, maybe even his teeth, and he's barely even in his head. He's not thinking. All he knows is that something hurt one of his babies, and he can't let it hurt any more of them.

And then Hawkeye comes in. Says something. And Trapper growls at him. Who the fuck is this guy to try to stop him protecting his babies?

When Hawk flinches, that's what snaps him out of it. And God, he knows he wouldn't have been able to come back if he'd done it.

Imagine older foxboy!Trapper and his hair's gone gray and people want to call him a certain term directed at sexy older men but they're not sure if calling him a 'silver fox' would come off as rude

NO THAT'S SO REAL. His husbands absolutely tease him about it. If you're new here since my wayne rogers breakdown you might not be aware of Trapper John, M.D., which is an absolutely killer spinoff that unfortunately has kind of a negative reputation in the fandom purely because AfterMASH and WALTER are both so bad. Pernell Roberts of Bonanza fame plays Trap in that and hoooooooooooo boy. yeah. yeah he qualifies as a silver fox. Point being Gonzo (his weirdo protege who lives in an RV in the hospital parking lot) absolutely calls him a silver fox in the first two weeks they know each other and Trap seriously considers firing him.

3.5k words of a fake study surrounding curses in the Foxboy Trapper 'Verse. It's currently hosted on my website as a PDF - I don't know if I want to post it to ao3. (because if i want to do that, i need to abolish ALL those 20something tables i've currently got in the document!).

This is genuinely one of the coolest things anybody's ever sent me and I'm so so thrilled by it. Graphs! Charts! The attention to detail!!!!!!!! Oughhhhhhhhhhh I've been going absolutely insane about this since you sent it to me and I'm certain I'll continue to go completely insane.

Trap scores a 68/84, but three questions (respiratory alterations, other bodily alterations, and developmental changes) aren't really applicable for him, so adjusted to ignore those three questions but end up with a score out of 84 that's a 79.3 - spot on by your chart! Super super neat and well thought out. The little touch of an acknowledgement for Gonzo and some really careful concealing of the fact that BJ, Trapper, and Hawkeye are all working at the same place is great. oughhhh going nuts about this.

Thoroughly recommend that anyone who enjoys the verse reads this, it's awesome.

Most of the dichotomy between Trapper's human brain and foxbrain is a direct result of trauma. He's been told his whole life that it's wrong to be like that. If he's going to look like that, then the least he can do is not act like that. So he shuts it down as often as he can—gives himself a sore throat to not make fox vocalizations with every word, tries not to give in to any of the instincts, and that means that, on occasion, everything boils out of him and he can't stop it. He's found a bit more of an equilibrium by Professional Courtesy, but he has a lot of peaks and ebbs that pull him towards or away from the foxbrain.

Early days, MASH-era Trapper is usually either desperately trying to act completely human or falling completely into foxmode at the slightest provocation from Hawkeye. A little bit of a shove and now it's wrestling time, things like that. He always feels guilty about it afterwards. Hawk never stops encouraging it, because he can see the strain it's putting on him. By the time BJ joins the party, Trapper's settled into his relationship with Hawk and feels more comfortable with himself as long as he's in his own home, but he still has moments where he tilts all the way over—see the wrestling bit in Boston - Part Six of Mating Habits.

This is working ahead a little bit, but by the time the boys have JT, (Trapper's son from Trapper John, M.D., who's genuinely, biologically all three of their son in this (there's a little bit of talk about this in Chapter Two of Professional Courtesy but we'll be getting there in the final year of Mating Habits as well)) Trapper's found much more of a balance point. He leans into those ebbs and flows rather than trying to fight them, and will occasionally slip into a headspace that he never let himself go to before where he'll legitimately take a nap in a sunbeam and bug his husbands for pets. He feels disgusting the first few times it happens, but it's about feeling safe to explore those parts of himself in a way that he never had before, and Hawk and BJ eventually manage to convince him that there's nothing wrong with it. He should get to be all of himself. That feeling of safety, of wholeness, is part of why they get to have JT, but we'll get there :3

As a side note, an awful lot of this is rooted in my (and the AU's co-creators'!) experiences growing up with undiagnosed autism. You feel like you're wrong, you feel like there are parts of you that don't belong in human society, you feel like you need to fight through the emotional distress to talk to people even when you can't because otherwise they're going to think there's something wrong with you. I can project onto this 1950s surgeon like you wouldn't believe.

Re: Trapper being protective, this was a thing we just floated an idea for the other day! He'll hear a dog outside and think well, that's practically A Wolf, and the wolf is going to Hurt My Babies, and then he herds all three of the kids, Erin included, into one room and sits in the doorway all puffed up and growling. He knows it's stupid and he feels stupid doing it but he genuinely can't stop himself, especially if BJ and Hawk aren't around. He and Waggle do not trust each other, but luckily the dog lives with Peg and her partner Melanie, so it's really only a problem if he's the one who drops Erin off, and they usually put Waggle in the yard until Trapper's gone home.
