narrator Chara
I consider myself something of a narrator, or at least a raconteur. I like telling stories, and I like being the person on the spot with an epigram or witticism. People with that sort of ability tend not to be remembered, though, except vaguely. They might get a terse mention here and there as a "humorist" or a "wit". Dave Barry has about that level of fame. How many people here have heard of Artemus Ward or Petroleum V. Nasby? Probably not many.
I don't know how "Chara" I am any more. Everything seemed so much clearer, so many years ago. Now I'm someone with a life, responsibilities, family, a household to keep up with. I've been afraid of Undertale screwing that up. But I guess it's time to grapple with the big questions. I must confront my own Creator, so to speak.
I have Opinions™ about the game of course and interpreting things. I have tried to be as objective as possible in my assessment of Undertale (and Deltarune) which...has certain implications. Undertale is told very elliptically, i.e. there's little information to go on. There's hints, suggestions, some plot threads, but the gaps in the storytelling are enormous—and surely this is quite deliberate. My own instinct is that Fox would like to draw the player's attention to this incompleteness. It's significant that there's so little information to go on. It means we should all be cautious about jumping to unwarranted conclusions.
(A glimmer from somewhere of Tamamo-hime. Well...Toby Fox is named Fox.)
I must apply this to myself: it's been a while since I've seen Undertale last and my memories could be tricking me, but I don't see enough evidence in the game to sort out whether Chara (never explicitly named) is the narrative voice. The red text in the "No Mercy" timeline makes things especially unclear, because that red text seems to be Chara's voice breaking through ("my room" etc.) in which case, the usual narrative text can't be Chara, right?
And then there's the perplexing moment of "It's me, Chara." Is that Frisk saying "that's my reflection in the mirror, Chara"? Is it Chara asserting who they are? Is it something else?
I will dare to suggest that this conundrum is not intended to have a solution, and that Fox has indicated this with a supremely ambiguous moment in the "No Mercy" timeline of Undertale. This moment is impossible to interpret, I say. It is not meant to be interpreted. It is, in fact, the mystery of the Trinity in a game—a moment when the player of a game induces a character in the game to look into a mirror and interact with their own reflection. It's like the famous hall-of-mirrors shot in Citizen Kane, near the end of Kane's life. Welles is suggesting that Kane is unknowable. Perhaps this issue of Chara's narration is also unknowable.

S/I Introduction: Kitra Kane
Tumblr media
(Link)
Best friends since high school, Kit is swept up in a magical adventure when she runs into Virginia as she and Prince search for the mirror in Central park.
She manages to get away before the trolls knock her out and lingers near the prison, once her initial panic dies down, trying to figure out how to get Tony out.
She isn't much help in the prison break, but she does her best as their journey goes on.
It doesn't take long for Wolf to turn his attention from Virginia to her, her sweet yet timid demeanor charming him like nothing else.
She's a lot more shy than her friend, and so much kinder to him.
She's also pretty jumpy, something he picks up on immediately. He can be intense at times and he takes notice of the way she shrinks whenever he gets too loud or rowdy, so he actively works on being softer with her.
He calls her KitKat, His Little Fox, and Green Eyes. All of which make her blush, adorably in his opinion.

You have to take a concept, matching you, and flip it upside down to be a cop, in Batman.  Your own comic, should be a Bat-Mite, a fan, to guide you; Word of God, is Canon, the tiny poops, the politician in power, the Pilate’s exposition on pork eating, to know who is evil, so you can have sex, watching them; bacon.  Judaism (bacon every morning), Christianity (bacon for literate), or Islam (bacon as mother’s secret, for literacy of child approved by mother and mother’s family).
Dick Grayson: Considered a slur in Charlebois logic, a comic book fan attempting to use the comics for crime, a narcotics signal under audit of Judaism.
Jason Todd: A fan directly emulating.
Tim Drake: A computer hacker we lure into pedophilia, the mirror of Batman.
Stephanie Brown: A comic book writer female, a new script used to insult blondes.
Damian Wayne: A sperm steal, a stolen property, upon scandal induced by us.
John-Paul Valley: A Nihilist bloodline, given their own writing chance, a new form of carpet installation, induced suicides.
Barbara Gordon: A cop piece, the female is a cop, the father was a gangster, a screen piece for community as supernatural.
David Xavimbe: A video game, the Batman member is gay, he’s ethnic pride.
Luke Fox: A writing game alternative, to make a cartoon episode, to introduce a new median.
David Cain: It’s a male or female live assassin, they produce thespian work, for Ottomans, they’re rigidly religious, “Amish”.
Cassandra Cain: A pedophile hunt, for a Bet lead, to place them as a supervillain, for a specialty of print to teach skill.
Bette Kane: A new sports cheat, through gambling, a better price for an eightball of cociane off "vig" (the pricer's fee, the cost for risk, an athlete's fee).
Kate Kane: The price of a deal removed, the calculation of a cost to the federal government out of Canada.
Helena Bertinelli: A love affair for the Bat, as a psychiatric indice file, for all those slain; the party, before the final reprieve, the international Jewry.
Houses of England (Match the Last Character of the Five, to the End of the Four):
Wait: Right.
Jaim: Witch.
Puck: Write.
Kruz: Craft.
Saem: Words.
Khan: Money.
Neal: Nihil.
King: Jucte.
Juwe: Panth.
York: Magic.
Cash: Merce.
Mack: Medik.

The Fifth Element

by candygramme
The world is being menaced by Evil, and only one person can save it. Fortunately he has help!
This is not a story for the faint of heart. There were so many opportunities to lampoon, that I really didn't know where to begin – and if you read then you will certainly notice that I didn't have the sense to know when to stop! All I can say is that I am deeply sorry.
In here you will find a villain the likes of which has never been seen before. You will find a hero of truly monumental ability, and a being who is just about perfect. You will find character death, bravery in the face of impossible odds and a variety of TV heroes past and present, from Star Trek to the X-files and beyond.
I wish to reassure readers that no Tom Wellings were harmed during the making of this movie. It was all done with smoke and mirrors. He will be fine, I promise.
My thanks go to spoonlessone for her stellar beta, and for the way she joyfully joined in the silliness. I also wish to thank the script writer of the Fifth Element, and tinkabell007, whose words I frequently stole. The story was written in 2008.

05. BIOGRAPHY
Born upon a cold december morning, Andromeda came to the world as a second daughter to Cygnus and Druella Black.A perfect child for House Black, or at least she would have been, had her birth not signified yet another disappointment due to her gender. Cygnus, however, was quickly won over by his daughter’s toothless smile and bright eyes; and Druella too, well, at least at first. No matter, her bond with her father stayed, and it translated perfectly into the child Andromeda grew up to be. Spoiled as any daughter of House Black and tremendously entitled due to years of her father’s coddling; proper and educated as any girl of her lineage should be, though never as poised as her mother would have preferred.
Growing up surrounded by who she did, it was no wonder what kind of ideals young Andromeda held. She was taught she was better, more deserving, purer than others. It was with this mindset that she arrived at Hogwarts. Eleven years old and with the proudest smile on her face she was sorted into slytherin. Not long passed, though, before Andromeda started to see how things really were. Children from other houses didn’t really want to be with her, and it was almost as if the older students prevented the few stray first years that got near to her from being her friends. And for a while, she tried her best at doing as she was told.
She stuck to her sister and her housemates. All while silently watching the rest. She saw them and suddenly she didn’t think they were as low as her family said. Sure, they might not be as good as her, but that didn’t make them entirely bad. So she pushed her prejudices as far back in her mind as she could and decided she no longer wished to be so alone. It didn’t sit entirely well with her family, rather than praise she started getting scolding letters from her father, and her mother was ever more distant. Still, she managed to keep her chin up and her reputation clear, she was just perhaps a misguided girl, but a pure, and noble, and refined one; she just needed a little push back to the right path. That was what her parents’ friends assured them anyways. The truth was that she was starting to feel more estranged from her family by the day. She loved them without measure, yes, but their ideals and teachings felt wrong in her stomach.
Time passed and even if she still felt like an outsider in both worlds, her ambition to be better was greater than any other feeling. She was a teenager when she made up her mind about what was right, and even if she could only state in her own mind, she knew her family was not.
When love finally arrived in the form of  everything her parents would despise, well, that was maybe the last push she needed. The relationship stayed secret, nobody could know, lest she wished to see Ted in danger, but once it began, all stolen moments and heavy kisses, Andromeda could no longer ignore the fact that she had to choose. Hard as the choice was, she managed to postpone making it until a month after graduating Hogwarts, when she noticed a growing bump in her stomach.
Andromeda didn’t desert her family in hiding, she didn’t climb out a window in the middle of the night, nor was she stolen from the gardens. No, Andromeda left her home right through the front door, after giving her father a kiss in the cheek and telling her mother she’d be back in a few hours. With an extension charm on her handbag to take with her a good part of her clothes and many things of both emotional and economical value, she headed to Gringotts and, in her last act as a daughter of House Black, she accessed her family’s vault to take a good amount of money with her into her new life.
Well into her pregnancy, she finally married the man she loved. They bought a house with the money she had taken from her family and received a beautiful daughter into their arms  (even then, all ties broken with her family, Andromeda could not help but name her daughter in Black tradition of stars and myths). She also started her formal training as a healer, a dream she had not forgotten since childhood.
Now, almost ten years since she left, the skies finally started to clear, He Who Must Not Be Named disappeared, so maybe now she could start to live without fear.

things i’d like to see from arc 2
this is just a list of stuff i would personally like, you dont have to agree with me. also i realize some of these aren’t the most realistic lol
Krokotopia - so krok is probably the next world? seems like it with the setup and addition of its stormgate, as well as the old assets. i don’t have a lot of wishes for the world (other than to be good lol) however i’d like to see less of Marleybone. I love MB but i want more focus on the kroks this time. Some other things, maybe an Alhazred cameo and Zigzag?
El Dorado - OK so most of these are gonna be worlds but i promise not all of them. ANYWAYS El Dorado is a given. I wanna go here SO BAD. also if they were to add El Dorado, I feel Wizard City and/or Celestia would probably be added as well, considering how tied they are to El Dorado (Celestia being the ones to unmoor the stormgate, Merle helped Marco Polo). For El Dorado itself, the gold sentinels HAVE to be mobs/bosses. Maybe we could finally meet the ghosts of our parents? Maybe FIGHT the ghosts of our parents? (wed get there and theyd be like we told your ass NOT to come here!!)
Marleybone p2/Albion Skyway - kingsisle please let me go to albion please please....i wanna help the foxes now that the war is over!!! LET THEM BE FREE!!! also this is a PERFECT time for a bonnie promo...jus sayin lol.. also guy fox companion? ik he ran off to port regal but i think hed try to get back to albion, we’d have to chase him down and make sure he doesnt blow up any small islands or whatever.
Companion Promos - SPEAKING OF A BONNIE PROMO...here are some companions i’d like to get a promo!!
Bonnie Anne (surprise! last promo at 57, around 75+ there should be another)
Ratbeard (promo at 55, around 75+ is also reasonable)
El Toro (HE NEEDS ONE give him epic strike at least)
Gracie Conrad (unreleased promo....pls...)
Hawkules (needs one, has an unreleased promo)
Catbeard (needs one, has an unreleased promo)
Tavern Companions (they all have unreleased promos. last promo at level 37??? they shouldve gotten one already lol)
Trainer Companions (anything to make carcarius usable. give him mojo flow?)
Starter Companions (been awhile, 46 last lvl. same boat as tavern companions)
Other (Magnificent 7, Argos, Contessa?, Mustang Sally. i just think companions involved in the story should all get something)
Presidio companions shouldn’t get another promo for awhile, as their last promo is at 67. They seem to get promos every 20ish levels (21,47,67) so around 85+ is reasonable. The ones listed above are either due for one or need one (imo).
Other Worlds - the worlds above are my most wanted, but these would be nice to see as well! i feel some of them are probably going to happen.
Polaris (no way that this one wont happen tbh)
Darkmoor (has concept art, a skyway)
Grizzleheim (one of the el dorado crew members is from here, only one we havent met in game besides our mother)
Azteca (Could be a lead up to dorado? also post morganthe azteca would be interesting!)
Celestia/Wizard City (already mentioned them earlier)
Monquista P2
Rajah (this is either a world or a skyway. Could be tied to Albion in a way)
Other Stuff - misc. things i’d like to be added.
Magic Mirror
MORE SHIPS/FLAG OPTIONS!! (Cool Ranch Skiff, Armada Ships, Valencia Ships, Boochbeards ship. More variety in flag designs, rerelease of the AMD ship flag designs..? they were so cool)
More packs/bundles (return of boochbeard bundle?)
Valencia P2 Nerf/Fix (you know i had to add this one)
If no fix, maybe we can get Able in arc2? Since Queen/The Armada is probably coming back.
More furniture/face items/Customization
Stitchable Nefarious Weapons
Gold Cap Increase
Kane’s Robe/Henchmen Items (a few of the henchmen wear items that we can’t get)
Fishing (i can do without crafting tbh)
this is all i can think of right now. if I have any ideas later i’ll just make a part 2 of this post.

They’re going to make a movie about the Trump presidency someday, an Oscar bait biopic like W that paints him as a tragic and heroically flawed figure who just wanted to do what he thought was best for the country (but at what cost?), and there’s going to be a scene inspired by Citizen Kane where he flies into a fit of rage and trashes a room in the White House upon learning he has lost re-election.  The movie will portray him as a mad genius, someone like Van Gogh (or rather the imaginary version of Van Gogh that the lowest common denominator layperson thinks of), self destructive, mentally ill but in a beautiful way, a master of his own art, the art of public speaking; his rallies will be framed like something out of Birth or a Nation or Triumph of the Will.  The director will portray this in a positive light, downplaying the literal Klan and Nazi symbolism with some halfhearted excuse about how DW Griffith and Leni Riefenstahl were cinematic geniuses of their era.
The actor who plays Trump will look and sound nothing like him, doing a bad impression with bad prosthetics and a wig even worse than the real Trump’s, but this will still be nominated for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.  If he’s still alive, Trump himself will have a cameo, either playing his father Fred Trump, or a ghostly version of his own subconscious; that is to say, there may be a scene where Actor Trump is at his lowest emotional point, looking at himself in the mirror, unsure how to go on, and Real Trump will play his reflection, giving him a pep talk and telling him to trust his gut because it’s never steered him wrong before.
It will lose Best Picture to a fictional drama set during the pandemic, and the presenter will make a joke about how the real Trump would go to the Supreme Court to make the Academy overturn the results.  All the rich white people in the audience will remember his legacy as a simple joke, something to have a nice laugh over, ignoring the hundreds of thousands of people he killed and the countless millions of taxpayer dollars he embezzled (he charges the government to provide security at his country club, never forget that).  It will review poorly, and conservatives will threaten the owner of Rotten Tomatoes over it, after which it will stream exclusively on Fox Plus, which will cost more than Netflix and provide a much smaller library of content from “non-Hollywood” (code for “non-liberal”) creators.  It will be watched slightly less than the Home Improvement reboot, and slightly more than Kanye West’s directorial debut, some movie about how cops are great and racism doesn’t exist.  Also, there will be a Roseanne re-reboot where this time SHE survives and the rest of the Conners died.
I have seen the future.
Search your feelings, you know it to be true.

You can buy a copy of this issue for your very own at my eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/bradentonbooks
Cover: Mark Harmon quitting NCIS
Tumblr media
Page 2: Stars Who Rock Around the Clock -- they believe in the healing power of crystals -- Naomi Campbell, Shirley MacLaine, Adele, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Uma Thurman
Page 3: Debra Messing, Goldie Hawn and Kate Hudson, Megan Fox, Katy Perry, Gisele Bundchen
Page 4: Eddie Murphy's roles and costumes
Page 6: George Clooney is turning 60 in May, and he says being an older dad to toddlers has its benefits -- his son isn't ever going to feel competitive with him and he'll be gumming his bread by the time he'd feel competitive with him, jokes the Oscar-winning actor, whose twins Ella and Alexander turn 4 in June -- George is well aware that growing up with two highly accomplished parents (his wife Amal Clooney is a successful human rights lawyer) can put a lot of pressure on a kid and that's why the couple is already guiding Ella and Alexander with strong values and kind hearts because George says it's their job to make sure that they care about people and that they challenge people in power and look out for people who don't have power and those are the things he was raised with -- the known prankster is also passing the practical joke tradition down to the next generation and he taught Alexander to take a piece of banana, chew it up and then spit it into a napkin, then stand next to him mom, pretend to blow his nose into it and look down until Mama looks at it, then eat it
Page 7: Partridge Family star Shirley Jones turned 87, and she's brimming over with gratitude for her wonderful life that's been chock-full of extraordinary experiences -- she says you have to have a good time and enjoy life to the fullest and before you know it you'll be 87 -- Shirley has three sons (her stepson David Cassidy died in 2017) and 13 grandchildren
Page 8: Take your etiquette test for tea with Queen Elizabeth
Page 9: Brain foods that may help prevent dementia
* Study says new drug slows Alzheimer's
Page 10: Jennifer Garner recently opened up about her real feelings on her body -- she's 48 and single and has three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck: daughters Violet and Seraphina and son Samuel -- in a recent interview, she admitted that her body has changed a lot since having three kids and she doesn't mind one little bit, even though she was hurt when a friend hinted she may be expecting again, saying there are some women whose bodies just, no matter how many babies they have, they bounce right back to that slim-hipped, no stomach and she has so many girlfriends who have that physique and she's so happy for them, but she's not one of them and she can work really hard and she can be really fit and she will still look like a woman who's had three babies and she always will
Page 11: 6 stomach symptoms you should never ignore -- catch problems before the become deadly
Page 12: After more than two decades, James Brolin says he's discovered the way to keep his marriage to Barbra Streisand going strong: negotiation -- it's taken two marriages and 22 years for him to figure it out and he and his wife have gotten so close being locked down together -- his mother was the sweetest person so he never really learned to negotiate with women but now he knows if you sit down and talk about a situation, you can work it out
Page 14: Dear Tony, America's Top Psychic Healer -- don't make snap judgments; you may lose the perfect mate -- Tony predicts a very hot summer coming and a lot more street crime
Page 15: Folks getting their COVID-19 vaccinations at the Berkshire Community College in Massachusetts got a shocking treat: a mini-concert from world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma -- while waiting out his 15-minute observation period, the musician sat down to play a socially distant symphony for his fellow inoculees
Page 16: Duchess Kate is never seen without a purse, but what exactly does she keep inside it? There's quite a history between royal women and their handbags: Princess Diana used her clutch bag to cover her cleavage from prying photographers, Queen Elizabeth moves her handbag from one arm to the other to signal to her staff when she's bored of chatting with someone, and Kate carries her bag in her left hand so she can keep her right hand free to greet and shake hands with guests and she holds her bag in front of her when shaking hands might be awkward -- according to royal protocol pre-pandemic, Kate must extend her hand first for another person to shake hands with her, so if she prefers to just smile instead of touching other folks, she uses her clutch to do that -- author Marcia Moody who wrote Kate: A Biography, says the duchess always carries four must-have items: in her small clutch, she carries a compact mirror, a handkerchief, blotting paper and lip balm and every now and then, if she's going to attend a tennis match, for example, Kate will carry a pair of sunglasses -- unlike Queen Elizabeth, whose purses come from a company called Launer, the duchess favors different brands, but mostly a company called Mulberry -- nowadays with three small children, the mom gravitates toward midsize bags with handles because she's got to take more items with her like a handy bunch of tissues, good for wiping little noses and faces, and also takes her camera along
Page 18: William Shatner confesses that when he starred in Star Trek during the mid-60s, he had no idea it would become a worldwide phenomenon still popular today -- Shatner, who turned 90 in March, says it's unimaginable and it's all beyond anybody's imagination or ability to repeat and the greatest thing about being the captain of the Enterprise for three years was his relationship with the cast and the roles were written so well
Page 19: Brandy is a one-in-a million cat because those are the odds she'd ever be found again after she went missing 15 years ago -- when Charles got the phone call from a California animal shelter that his missing pet has been found, he could scarcely believe his ears and the Los Angeles man was skeptical and thought it must be a mistake but he had made sure the two-month-old kitten had a microchip and sure enough, the malnourished stray they found was his Brandy -- Charles did break down and cry because he thought about all of the years he lost from her and when he picked her up, she started to purr and it was very emotional
Page 20: Mark Harmon finally lured wife Pam Dawber out of retirement to star alongside him on NCIS, but the pairing will be short-lived because he's leaving the show after 18 hit seasons -- the 69-year-old star is finally fed up with the backbreaking hours, endless rehearsals, and feuds with cast and crew, and plans to ride off into the sunset with Pam and retire to the couple's Montana Ranch -- Mark's contract is up after season 18, and he's agonized over whether to sign a new one and he's being offered the moon and the stars to come back for a few more seasons, but he says his heart just isn't in it and Mark has faced problems on the set over the past few years and he feels his age, he just doesn't need the aggravation anymore -- NCIS recently teased a possible departure of his character Leroy Gibbs when the special agent commander was suspended for assaulting and nearly killing a suspect but despite that, Harmon insists Gibbs not be killed off so he can leave the door open for a possible return
Page 22: Legendary actor Michael Caine just turned 88 and he's still going strong, starring in an upcoming comedy Best Sellers and says he knows he's old but he doesn't feel old, not in his head, where it matters
Page 24: They say money doesn't buy happiness, but what do people spend their money on that can buy happiness? You don't need millions of dollars to afford the things that happy people buy to stay that way and studies show that anything over $75,000 a year in income is gravy, which means yachts, jewels, second homes and art collections are not at all required -- the best thing to drop your cash on is experiences and doing is better than having and in other words, an object you own will never give you the consistent pleasure of an experience that creates good memories that live on forever -- also the best experiences are the ones that involve other people like having a picnic with family, going rafting with pals, or even just walking and talking with an exercise buddy
Page 25: Freshen Your Fridge -- make a clean start with this 5-step plan
Page 26: Tony's Mystic World -- may the force be with you -- the life force can be drained out of you by fear or worry
Page 28: Sensational Snaps From Around the World -- photo contest captures amazing sights
Page 31: When to trash it -- the useful lifespan of refrigerated food
Page 32: It's been 40 years since Marilu Henner starred on the hit sitcom Taxi, but the great memories and wonderful co-stars are always on her mind because she's still pals with them -- they always stayed in touch with each other and never lost touch and do a Taxi Zoom every two months and they're all very current with each other and they have a text chain as well and they're in contact every week -- Marilu is close with cast members Tony Danza, Judd Hirsch, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd and Carol Kane
Page 33: Garth Brooks is overjoyed wife Trisha Yearwood has finally bounced back from her bout with COVID-19 -- she seems to be 100 percent, according to Garth, and at the end there during fatigue she got real impatient, really kind of mean and sassy and he thought well, she's back to herself -- after announcing in February that Trisha had the coronavirus and Garth said he had tested negative
Page 40: The grass is always greener when you use these simple gardening tips
* Avoid cat-astrophe -- the right way to add a stray

Page 44: Eyes on the Stars -- Sylvester Stallone and wife Jennifer Flavin leave a Florida hotel (picture), Jane Seymour is still looking on the bright side even as the world continues to weather the pandemic, one year after the death of Kenny Rogers his family thanked fans as they honored his life, Sharon Stone is dishing dirt about her Hollywood past in her recently released memoir like one moviemaker who told her to have sex with a male co-star to improve their on-screen chemistry, 28-year-old twins Lady Amelia and Lady Eliza Spencer who are the nieces of Princess Diana recently stepped out in South Africa as bridesmaids for fellow high society girl Leila Osato, director Christopher Columbus pooh-poohed internet rumors about the existence of an NC-17 cut of Mrs. Doubtfire but he did confirm there's an unreleased R-rated version
Page 45: Good Morning America co-host Cecilia Vega mugs it up for the camera on the morning show (picture), Gretta Monahan gets out of a car (picture), longtime GMA veteran Robin Roberts displays her ever-present sunny side on the set (picture), the Hollywood Hills home of Johnny Depp recently had some uninvited guests when a man was spotted loitering by the property's pool but ran off after being confronted by a neighbor and not much later Johnny's security team called police about another unwanted visitor who had taken a shower and helped himself to the actor's booze, Elsa Pataky has been married to Chris Hemsworth for 10 years and says patience and communication and understanding are what help their relationship be successful

Jonathan Groff decides we should take advantage of what might be New York’s last suitable night for al fresco dining in 2019. He sits down at one of a dozen empty tables outside the otherwise packed Hell’s Kitchen bistro and announces, in a tone suggesting more mischief than regret, that he must first make a call.
"Hello," he says, iPhone now at his ear. "Joel Grey?"
Groff is starring in a limited revival of Little Shop of Horrors, and it is a very hot ticket. The Broadway legend on the other end of the line has apparently thrown a Hail Mary in hopes of scoring seats to the night’s sold-out performance. Hamming up this exchange for my amusement, Groff is game to play broker for the Tony and Oscar winner who originated the role of Cabaret’s tuxedoed emcee — and, maybe, anybody else who has his number.
"This is basically my part-time job," says Groff of fielding requests, jotting down credit card information and negotiating pickup times and locations for friends both famous and civilian. "It was the same thing when I was doing Hamilton," he adds of his year playing King George III in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop history lesson. "But I was really only onstage for nine minutes during that show, so the tickets were probably full-time."
The 34-year-old actor seems eager to please, not unlike current alter ego Seymour. Little Shop’s nebbish, sweet and ultimately doomed florist nurtures a manipulative plant even as the pet’s homicidal tendencies grow more and more apparent. Those familiar with the campy musical comedy know that it suffers no shortage of blood, but it’s a nursery rhyme compared with Groff’s recent work on truecrime thriller Mindhunter. Playing a curious FBI agent in David Fincher’s Netflix series has perhaps done more for his ascendant profile than anything yet. But two seasons on the drama have meant two nine-month stints in Pittsburgh, filming interrogation scenes with character actors who bear uncanny resemblances to famous serial killers.
So even on a two-show day like this late- October Saturday, the rigors of theater are easy work for Groff. Over a couple of hot toddies, in between humoring three smitten waiters at the restaurant at which he’s been a regular since Little Shop went into previews down the block, the actor appears to be in his element. "Theater is such a communal, familial medium and interactive experience," notes Groff, who says he recognizes faces in the crowd during most performances. "Mindhunter, for me at least, is a very private experience."
Groff plays against type on Mindhunter. Wide-eyed with an almost perpetual grin, his is a mug you wouldn’t be surprised to find in an illustrated Merriam-Webster — cozied up to the entry for "baby face." Much of his previous acting career leaned into this, starting with his breakout. The Pennsylvania native came to New York at 19 and landed the lead in the musical Spring Awakening by the time he was 21. "I was just auditioning for the ensemble of Broadway shows," says Groff. "I hadn’t really developed the taste to appreciate something like Spring Awakening until I was in it."
New York’s "It" Broadway show of the aughts, the rock opera about sexual discovery among 19th century German teenagers earned Groff his first Tony nomination. He spent two years in the production before leaving in 2008, at the same time as friend and co-star Lea Michele, to pursue film and television. The work that immediately followed — Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, a recurring spin on Michele’s Fox hit Glee, a supporting role in the second season of Kelsey Grammer’s cult drama Boss, voicework in Disney $1.3 billion smash Frozen (he’ll reprise his role as Kristoff in Frozen 2, out Nov. 22) — got him on the radar for vehicles of his own. When HBO began casting Looking, its 2014 dramedy about a group of gay friends navigating an evolving San Francisco, Groff was soon tapped to front the series.
"He will search for the best version of every scene and will work until everyone drops," says Looking executive producer Andrew Haigh, who cast him as Patrick — boy-nextdoor- ish, like the actor, but privileged and problematically fickle. "He is also wholly unafraid to be vulnerable onscreen."
Looking lasted for only two seasons and a wrap-up movie, and its premature demise allowed Groff to do Hamilton, which he joined while the show was off-Broadway in early 2015, and then made the jump to Broadway. His supporting part as the aforementioned royal — with interstitial lamentations for the seceding Colonies, sung like a lovelorn (and supremely pissed) Davy Jones — earned Groff his second Tony nomination. But Groff wasn’t long for Hamilton, either. He was circling his next TV project, a moody prestige procedural about the early days of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, based on the 1995 memoir Mindhunter by criminal profiler John E. Douglas.
"I’m not naturally a true-crime person. So reading the book, I was like … 'oh, fuck,' "says Groff of John E. Douglas’ memoir 'Mindhunter.'
Mindhunter, the book and the series, delves into the morbid minutiae of notorious murder cases with an emphasis on interviews between law enforcement and criminals in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Groff was in contention for the role of FBI agent Holden Ford, based loosely on Douglas. First, he had to prove to director and executive producer Fincher — a filmmaker long admired by Groff, who says he has "a boner for his brain" — that a jovial Broadway star most widely known for singing with a reindeer in a Disney cartoon could have the upper hand with serial killers.
It was not Groff’s first audition for Fincher. Seven years earlier, he was in the running to play Napster co-founder Sean Parker in The Social Network. "My agents said, 'You have an audition in L.A. with David and Aaron Sorkin,' " Groff recalls. "If you get it, you start rehearsal the next day, so pack your suitcase for two months. They really like your tape, but they’re also considering Justin Timberlake." The part went to Timberlake.
"I did not feel then — and still don’t — that he had the inherent venality for that role," Fincher says of Groff. "He is as decent and sensitive as anyone I’ve ever met."
If venality is off the table for Groff, darkness is not. And though casting the song-anddance man was a source of curiosity for some in Hollywood before Mindhunter’s 2017 debut, the finished product didn’t elicit any skepticism from critics. Over the first season, Groff’s character goes from eager, milkdrinking company boy to a shell of the man introduced in the first episode. He alarms colleagues with the way he mirrors serial killers, until he has a panic attack after getting a bear hug from a necrophile. The second run, equally well reviewed after its August debut, saw a somewhat recovered Holden sit down with Charles Manson and, for the dramatic fulcrum of the season, investigate the Atlanta child murders of 1979-81.
"It is so impossibly bleak that I don’t think about it while I’m doing it," says Groff, who confesses he finds watching the show more affecting than making it. "All due respect to people who feel like the character is inside of them or whatever, but I don’t have that. I would leave set, listen to Beyoncé, and that was it."
After an hour and a half in his company, Groff reveals himself as a Lucille Ball historian, an avid bike rider, a devout New Yorker and someone who doesn’t seem easily bummed out — except when the conversation turns to success. His excitement over landing Mindhunter, he says, was immediately diluted by a pang of sadness. "Whenever something really great happens, it makes me feel a little bit depressed," he says. "It’s like, this is never going to get better than this moment right now. I’m sitting in David Fincher’s office and he’s giving me this role."
Talk of a third season of Mindhunter is on hold while Fincher focuses on his next feature. But the director did take a recent break from Mank, a biopic on Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, to attend Groff’s first Little Shop matinee with wife and fellow Mindhunter executive producer Céan Chaffin. It was a surprise appearance, but only because Groff hadn’t been checking his text messages. "I’m not good at my phone," he admits.
Groff has not looked at his phone since that one call — which, while polite, now has him in danger of running late for curtain. He breaks the bad news of his immediate departure to one particularly adoring waiter, and we walk to the stand where his bike is locked. There, he pulls from his bag a cobalt helmet that could double as Tron cosplay. Bars of blinding LED lights on both its front and back, his headgear tells cabs to get the hell out of the way and signals to everybody else that this is a man who values safety over subtlety.
"Yeah, I do really love riding my bike in the city … I’m just not that hard-core," Groff says of the helmet before encasing his tousle of sandy chestnut hair for the one-block ride to the theater and an expectant Joel Grey. "My mom bought this for me."
