New year, new stays! I haven’t done much this year sewing-wise because I've had not one, not two, but three job changes, one of which was transitioning from an escape room game master to a college-level computer science teacher. New blog post!! Today, we’re going to talk about health limitations. Link in bio for full post . . The other day someone made a snippy comment about my process and how long some projects take me, and it kind of irked me. Her attitude is her own issue to deal with, but I do want to talk about chronic illness, because it’s such a poorly understood topic considering how prevalent it is. . . Many of you know that I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease a couple years ago, and with that came chronic pain, chronic fatigue, relapsing fever, brain fog, and a whole slew of other super fun symptoms. . . Whether it’s incapacitating pain that leaves me unable to sit or stand for more than a couple minutes at a time, fatigue that makes me so exhausted I get dizzy spells and lightheaded, or just general brain fog that leaves me so utterly lost with what I was doing seconds before—these things all slow down my process, and I’m not ashamed of that. . . I’m doing the best I can within my body’s limitations. Sometimes I push myself too hard, like the time that I almost passed out in a pattern drafting class, or when I spent half of D23 dissociating because I was in so much pain the whole time. But I’m doing my best not to let my health conditions stand in the way of the things I enjoy, and so are other cosplayers with chronic illness. . . Do you ever do a project and then immediately plan how you want to fix it/redo it??? . . I have so many plans for this gown!! I made it in under 2 weeks between D23 and Rose City last year, so I would have something wearable for our rococo princess group. But because it was such a rush project, there are a lot of things I plan to change about it!! . . I need to rip out the bodice interlining and fully bone each panel. I did half boned to save time, but I love the beautiful flat planes of a fully boned bodice that 18th century court gowns always have. . . I also plan to redo the sleeves, because I love the pleated lace explosions that court gown sleeves were!! And the embellishments!! So many roses and puffs and frills to add!! One more Rococo Belle photo for this row!! . . I’m hoping to work on Belle once my sewing schedule calms down, I really want to rework the bodice so it’s more historically accurate and then I want to actually do all of the embellishments. . . At the time that I made this, I was in the early stages of Lyme treatment and I’m so much pain that I’m honestly surprised I even got it to a wearable stage. It’s definitely not the quality of work I’m happy with and there are so many things I want to change about it, but considering I could barely sit upright for more than twenty minutes at a time, I’m just blown away I made it at all. I’m hoping to finish it sometime this year, so stay tuned for that crazy process, whenever we get there!! . . . .
