Feeling & celebrating 30 Years of @KabaModern this weekend was unforgettable 🫶🏾✨ Thinking about all we have been through with the pandemic and thoughts from still processing & grieving the devastating loss of our beloved brother @sir_twitch_alot last week really made me want to hug everyone just a bit tighter, embrace a bit longer, and really not hold back on letting people know they are loved & appreciated. So many moments and intimate conversations shared….. I’m still processing all the amazingness of this past weekend and will share more later, but for now, I just wanted to share this snapshot of joy and pride from our 30 Year Old @KabaModern fam. [ My cousins used to do photo challenges in which they would take a photo or photos of a day in their lives through their eyes (or lenses hehe). Not only did these photos serve as updates to one another this year, but these behind-the-scenes shots also etched what was once my current status into memories. ]

In one of my last dance classes, we were told to go up to the mirror and just stare at ourselves. Look intimately into our eyes and set our intentions.

When we were asked what it felt like to look at ourselves in this way, I replied with Rudy Francisco's "Mirror" poem--seeing everything but myself..

Okay, maybe I did look at my untucked shirt, the tooth I may have chipped this week, my bun that was coming undone, those wrinkles on my face that we don't talk about, and am I too thiQUE..?

One would think dancers need a mirror to look at when learning new steps--Heck, I even preached it..but I wouldn't always look at myself... No wonder why I appreciated classes that allowed no mirrors, other eyes, or cameras in the room.

You see, I still have Tumblr drafts of photos taken from summers filled with dancing. One lesson from this particular class has always stuck with me, and those words have been reverberating within me lately. Although I could never reiterate his exact words, I remember David Lee talking about how he would always have that degree in Studio Art, but dance is something he could pursue now. We won't always have the luxury of being this able-bodied as we do now, so why not do all the things we love to do while we still can?

I don't know how well that resonates with other dancers.. But after spending these last bits of my summer sick, I can't help but be in the position to reflect on it. My brother used the movie Logan as his depiction of getting older, and I feel that. I will not get any younger, so I value the wealth of health more dearly these days. Btw, turning 30 really does do that for you (fr fr). The day after I jumped back into dancing, I instantly thought I had the flu..'cause what was once counted as mere sore muscles has now advanced to straight-up malaise and body aches (lol).

I may have never wanted to see my whole self in the mirror, simply because I didn't want to see myself as the dancer who looks awkward..who "messed up".. who's facing right when everyone's facing left in the mirror..who looks tired and is slowly becoming the not-so-youngest person in the room..but! Today, this is dedicated to my learning & growing self 👵🏼 Also to my new, little tribe of big-hearted dancer fwends. Y'all are gems, and I want to thank you for facilitating opportunities to fall in love with our mirrors and dance again 🙌🏽

And until I'm one of those aunties that start up cha-cha and Zumba at parties, I'll be here like Aunt Vive showin' up to classes 💃🏽
