On this day in 1861, America's Civil War begins as Confederate guns open fire on Fort Sumter. No one dies in the two-day bombardment, but hundreds of thousands will perish in the resulting four-year conflict.

What the 'Dawn of the Civil War' can tell us about today's acrimonious politics
Author Erik Larson appeared on NPR’s program, “Fresh Air” with interviewer Dave Davies. The impression I got from the interview, which you can hear and view the transcript for here, is that Mr. Larson is unaware of many of the complexities and nuances of the period about which he’s writing. There are a few areas of the interview where it seems to me he has misread the facts. There are also a few…

"Captain Abner Doubleday is the man generally regarded to have fired the first Union shot of the war from Sumter. The New Yorker would eventually rise to the rank of Major-General of volunteers during the conflict. He later described the circumstances surrounding this ‘first shot’: As I was the ranking officer, I took the first detachment, and marched them to the casemates, which looked out upon the powerful iron-clad battery of Cummings Point. In aiming the first gun fired against the rebellion I had no feeling of self-reproach, for I fully believed that the contest was inevitable, and was not of our seeking."
[source https://irishamericancivilwar.com/2012/07/20/identifying-the-irishman-who-fired-the-unions-first-shot-of-the-american-civil-war/ The article continues with an account from Private James Gibbons, Co. E 1st U.S. Artillery: "Captain Doubleday stood two feet behind me as I held the lanyard, and at his command I pulled it. It was a good shot, for it struck the wall at the Point."

frank turning into a dragon in the mark of athena evacuation when it was the beginning of the book and when it wasn't even his pov, even though we as readers and camp jupiter as a collective had no clue he could DO that...you really had to be there. even annabeth was like HUH. later books have people fixating on his ability to be a swarm of bees but where has frank seen a dragon before that he could imitate? he'd never shapeshifted in his life until the day before and offpage decided to do a mythological creature as opposed to an animal. he just came up with that!

Today (April 13th) I am 18! It's also Neil's 18th anniversary of banging out the tunes (I gave him a little sweater hehe). Also Jefferson's 281st birthday. And surrender of Fort Sumter's 163rd anniversary.

At Fort Sumter, this Bizarre, Floating Contraption Helped Start the Civil War
Patterned after a model built in France and used during the Crimean War, the Confederates’ Floating Battery was a daunting and, in theory, potentially ruthless vessel. It even had a compact hospital—complete with operating tables and beds—attached to the rear, which proved an unnecessary ‘luxury’ considering how the contraption was ultimately used. (Naval History and Heritage Command) This…
