Fort Beaubassin/Lawrence and Fort Beausejour/Fort Cumberland
Two big forts today on our way towards St John, the first found a little by accident. Fort Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence immediately adjacent there was little to see above ground but it is the history of the place that is interesting. The site was originally a Mi'kmaq indigenous location until Acadians settled in the area with the two coexisting in relative harmony however the long simmering border dispute between the British and French erupted in 1750 when the French and Mi'kmaq burned the village in advance of the British forces arriving. The Acadians and French then withdrew across the river and constructed Fort Beausejour and the British built Fort Lawrence on the Beaubassin Ridge and the two effectively faced each other across the Missaquash river which was the boundary of the British and French territory. The British eventually took Fort Beausejour in 1755 and it become the British garrison known as Fort Cumberlandand Fort Lawrence was abandoned though it was used alongside Fort Beausejour to hold the Acadians before their deportation.
After viewing the landscape we moved the few miles to the main fort site of Beausejour which became Fort Cumberland once under British control. This is one of Canadas oldest forts built in a pentagon shape originally by the French to which the British added an extension. It was attacked unsuccessfully during the American Revolution and eventually abandoned in 1835.

Dubrovnik
I had mixed feelings about visiting Dubrovnik, but was pleasantly surprised in the end. Pre-Covid it had become a prime example of over tourism, with vast numbers of cruise ship passengers and other visitors swamping the Old Town. Though very busy on a Saturday in early June 2023 it was reasonably straightforward to avoid the masses, by venturing down the backstreets or visiting the quiet…

If you don't make your fantasy "spent life on the run" characters fatter after they find a home and a happy ending I will find you. Give that muscle powered love interest a dad bod AT LEAST. He went to war. He needs it. Give your characters variety. And fucking feed them already

Had such a fabulous day exploring Dorset today.
Visited Lawrence of Arabia’s grave. Just so you know, he wasn’t from Arabia. 👨‍🏫
Went searching for bedknobs and broomsticks at Corfe Castle.
Strolled along the coastline and said hello to Old Harry.
Visited Fort Henry and stood where Winston Churchill, King George VI, Supreme Allied commander Dwight D. Eisenhower, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery and Acting Admiral Louis Mountbatten witnessed the largest live ammunition practice of World War II.
Enjoyed a pub grub and then an afternoon coffee with two friends who have known each other for nearly 80 years.
Couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day.

Secrets at altitude: The turbulent life of Buster Chander
Lawrence “Buster” Chander gazed blankly out the United Airlines Boeing 737 window, the vast, open sky mirroring the expanse of his life, which now teetered on the brink of collapse. At nearly 80, Buster stood as a stalwart figure in Montana, revered for the success of Chander Ranch Beef, a legacy he had nurtured into an international brand. But as the plane cut through the clouds toward Denver,…

Spirit of the Prairie
In honor of Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I am sharing the Prologue to “Spirit of the Prairie: The History of the Making of the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Pageant.” “Spirit of the Prairie.” Contact me here to buy a book. October 1867. Smoke hangs over the valley like shreds of silver silk. The autumn dawn is perfectly still; no breeze stirs the chattery cottonwoods. The scent of coffee is…
