James corden coming back now this have we not suffered enough 😞
#I could say something about the entitlement usamericans feel to being able to move abroad anywhere in the world and be welcome but hey#from first hand experience I know they give near zero effort to actually understand local cultures either#anyway. I have multiple friends currently in the UK bc of this so I can’t be too hateful#but I also know a lot of extremely ignorant and obnoxious Americans here and I can only imagine it’ll get worse 🤣#<- anyway the uk is cooked anyway so hardly the most productive move#but usamericans looooove moving here bc it’s ‘easy’ Europe (no pesky foreign languages hey)#but very typical usamerican ethnocentrist exceptionalism mindset to be like. ah yes our election result has ramifications that’ll negtively#impact the whole world#let’s go move somewhere else where we’ll feel that negative repercussion the least#also whole world shows their asses and gives usamericans visas too easy it’s embarasing 😭😭😭#like I have friends in the Us who just don’t get it and keep trying to get me to move there and I’m like it’s not that easy ??#even if I wanted to ????#no concept at all that getting a visa can be hard 😭😭

dear internet stop throwing pictures of beautifully toasted bagels slathered in cream cheese at me i don't have a toaster i don't have room in my teeny kitchenette for a toaster a toaster is a luxury here in japan as are bagels as is cream cheese
bagel places here that ask me "do you want that heated up" make me want to cry tears of joy even though all they mean is they're gonna stick the bagel in the microwave for ten seconds so it's slightly warm-ish but not enough to crisp up or melt the cream cheese a little
#food#closest bagel place to me has two options blueberry bagel or white choco chip#its fortunate that i love blueberry but anyway that shows the general mindset towards bagels here they're sweet snacks more or less#hard to find everything bagel or onion bagel etc#i havent been home since before covid but my primary reason for wanting to is i neeeed a nyc bagel#and real mac n cheese and real grilled cheese#and pasta that isnt spaghetti with something something cream sauce#oh and i really miss american bbq which means it sucks that i'll be going home in winter bahahaha#never expected to stay here as long as i have but otoh food cravings aside what real motivation do i have to live in the us#obvs my parents and i do want to see them and wish we could live close#but as for life in the us itself... living here is so far a lot easier in a multitude of ways#the biggest downside is my being a foreigner. gotta reapply for that visa every few years#and even though i speak japanese every day the business-style japanese of workplaces is totally different so im limited in terms of jobs#aaaand when im home in the us i have the opposite problem... i miss japan and japanese food instead xP#why cant i teleport that'd solve everything#fizz's life#why are people reblogging this??? X'D

To really understand the legacy of racism and exploitation in the U.S. Agricultural industry, we need to go back to the Fair Labor Standards Act, which became law nearly a century ago, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president.
This law fundamentally changed working conditions in the U.S., it gave us a minimum wage, a 40-hour work week, overtime pay –you know, the good stuff.
But these benefits didn’t apply to farmworkers, who at the time in the South were overwhelmingly Black.
In fact, you can draw a straight line from slavery, to the Fair Labor Standards Act, to the conditions we continue to see in agriculture today. Nearly a century later, farmworkers across the U.S., mostly Latino immigrants now, are still denied even the most basic federal protections, such as water breaks or access to shade in extreme heat. For many families, the effects of these racist exclusions are real, they’re tangible.
At the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles last year, President Joe Biden outlined his plan to reduce the number of migrants seeking asylum at the Southern border. His administration, Biden said, would help “American farmers bring in seasonal agricultural workers from Northern Central American countries under the H-2A visa program.”
What does that mean for a program that’s already plagued with wage theft and abuse?
Since Biden took office in January of 2021, he’s turned “safe and orderly migration” into a kind of mantra. He says it all the time. And just in February of that year, 2021, the White House assembled working groups to discuss the H-2A program. The idea is to divert asylum seekers from the Southern border and into this program. Here’s Biden talking about the plan last summer:
President Biden: “And on this jobs front, our Department of Agriculture is launching a pilot program to help American farmers bring in seasonal agricultural workers from Northern Central America countries under the H-2A visa program. To improve conditions for all workers.”
Here’s the main issue with that. The Biden Administration wants to offer this temporary worker program to migrants who are seeking asylum at our Southern border. A program that is riddled with abuse and trafficking is being offered to people who are fleeing violence and trafficking.
“They’re only gonna be able to stay in the United States for 6, 7, 8 months outta the year. What happens during those other months of the year? Uh, they have to go back to their home country and they’re gonna be going back to a country that they fled.
Maybe because they were being persecuted, somebody in their family was murdered, you know, you’re gonna send them back to that situation and you’re gonna send them back to that situation with dollars in their pockets, which I think is just gonna make them targets for extortion.”

One thing no one warns you about when you start working in a higher education project is that you'll have to watch not only the staff but also the professors mocking the students all the time for no reason like they're a burden just for existing
#and this is a post-grad program. i wonder how people talk about teenagers in school jesus christ#also the complete lack of empathy for foreign students with reasonable concerns about visa bureaucracy#i swear to fucking god today a coworker called a student whose native language is Spanish#who passed an extremely difficult test in a niche field written in Portuguese to be accepted in the program#a *lazy idiot* because he send us an email in English#which she doesn't speak

US government is fucking incompetent, had to fly back to NZ for a visa renewal and mail a bunch of docs (including my passport) up to the consulate but the address they said to mail the documents to was wrong!! so now my passport etc is god knows where and the consulate still does not have the things they need to issue my goddamn visa. i really really hope the postie is able to deliver this stuff over the weekend, i am totally fucked if these docs are delayed much more and i miss my flight back to the US
#i have flexi tickets for this flight so can change the return flight but it’ll be so fucking expensive#for reference the address said to mail it to Customs St but it needed to be Customs St East#but this is the address that they put in the official document saying where to mail everything so it should have been double checked!!#i mailed this stuff on monday and now it’s friday and it hasn’t been delivered so i really really hope it’s done over the weekend#this is a US visa btw i had to come back to NZ and then mail everything to the US consulate here because america hates foreigners#the entire visa system oscillates between deeply incompetent and actively hostile i hate it so much

jiwon told me this past weekend that a while ago his dad, who owns a hagwon and also went to entire law school, once offered to use his own name to create a hagwon business with/for me so i dont have to work at hagwons anymore. thats so nice of him, i am consistently shocked by How much jiwon's parents like me considering i repeatedly make poor impressions by not speaking korean every time i see them
#according to a different friend a business has to have 5 employees before theyre allowed to hire a foreigner to work there even on f visa#so im not really sure how he would pull this off. but he did go to and graduate from law school and according to jiwon he also legally#evades taxes on the hagwon business he currently runs so i simply trust that he knows what he is talking about with the laws#t

Also me loosely researching the classical music industry in japan and finding some westerner getting ripped to SHREDS in some reddit post. I was legit reading this comment aloud to my coworker bc I was aghast at how brutal they were being (but also kinda amused bc they were. Kind of right.)
#speculation nation#i say loosely researching bc im not going for 100% realism in my self indulgent band au fanfic#but i still wanna have an idea of what the real life music industry looks like#the original asker was someone who was like 'i wanna combine my dreams of being a professional musician & living in japan. any tips?'#tho like much longer than that. talking about the plan they were thinking of and all that shit#there were ppl who were like 'literally Why Japan'(bc of anime probably)#& then the brutal reply from someone living in japan that tore INTO it#one of the biggest things being that Most people in professional orchestras in japan are japanese. for several reasons#like paying for visas not being smth the orchestras would wanna do. just easier to keep with ppl from japan#this response detailing how they could Possibly go about this if they were legit serious#but then being like 'but thats not why you want to do this is it?' & calling out the weird glorification of japanese culture#and i was just like Dammnnnnnnn#me and the employee both being old anime fans who are learning japanese for the enjoyment of it#but neither of us having any illusions about japan being the end all be all & thus wanting to Move There#id love to visit someday but i dont want to Move There. it's apparently pretty hostile towards foreigners overall anyways#but yeah i almost felt bad for this person. but Also. this response gave me some very useful info for my research#like yes sorry OP that u just got murdered. but this person just supplied the info i was looking for so Hell yes
